It is no stretch at all to say that Richard Chamberlain was second only to Elvis himself, as a Pop Idol. Dr.Kildare wasn't a Television Series. It was a National Craze!! To think that Captain James T. Kirk could have been Dr. James Kildare makes any fan shudder. Yes, William Shatner was offered the Title Role before Richard Chamberlain. A near tragic error in miscasting. Although I never saw the show in its original run, it was clearly an exceptional series. Just the four and five minute segments on You Tube bear that out. Acting chops and nearly unsurpassed looks. To top it off, a modest man who never took his great fame seriously. It was left to his Legion of fans to do that
