One constructive criticism of your excellent method: When it comes time to add a second, third, or fourth finger, I would prefer to make "real" chord shapes instead of random, arbitrary shapes. By analogy, if you're learning a language that's difficult to pronounce, wouldn't you want to practice by saying real words instead of wasting time and energy on random combinations of phonemes?

I see your point Brian! And if you want to stick to more common chords at that point sure! But in music, any note combination is possible. You'll find all sorts of tricky chords and intervals in jazz and more modern classical music. Also, the less common shapes will still hugely improve your dexterity - more developping an ability than vocabulary. But your approach would tackle both at once for most, which is awesome and a great point.
