Hands down, stellar picks here. I remember MGS flung open the doors to me with how story driven AND cinematic a game could be. It began to really blur the lines of entertainment. SOTN was my go-to proof that side-scrolling action was still relevant even in the 3D space. What a fun adventure. And right on with that music. We love sharing how we utilized it in our wedding. 😊
I just want Medal of Honor 1997, Underground, Frontline and Medal of Honor Allied Assault remake. Imagine today's 1080p upscaled graphics with DLSS 3.5 to 4K, ray tracing, or path tracing enabled. And Ray reconstruction with, perfect contrast, lightning, color saturation and HDR of today's modern technology. Playing it on OLED TV or monitor and I'm a big Tomb Raider fan as I got PS1 for my birthday along with Crash Bandicoot warped, Tomb Raider 2 Dagger of Xian, Spyro, and Medal of Honor and Dead or Alive. God I love PS1 it holds special place in my heart!
There were exactly five games that anyone who owned a PS1 back in the day got their consoles exclusively for: - Resident Evil (1 or 2) - Gran Turismo - Tomb Raider - Final Fantasy VII - Metal Gear Solid. Every PS1 owner I ever knew bought their console for at least one of these games.
@@System_Sega Nobody cares about the Saturn version. Even the PC version is more fondly remembered than the Saturn version. There's good reason for that.
@@System_Sega Never learning their lesson about how being the first out the door isn't always the best idea, Sega forced Core Designs to rush the Saturn port out six weeks early. That's a month and a half of extra development time that the PlayStation and PC ports got to have. Those versions have fewer bugs and performance issues as a result.
Great stories, like in MGS, Silent Hill, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, Soul Reaver and many other games, help to create a strong emotional connection with main character and game overall. It also helps to overcome dull moments in gameplay because of curiosity of what will happen next in a story. Klonoa was the first game that made me cry in the end. Purely because of a good plot twist. And it was amazing. It was totally unexpected from a platformer. Such games become priceless memories. I remeber playing Japanese version of Ace Combat 3 through each ending just because of story and emotions. Even not understanding a single word )))
Great showcasing of games which shaped my childhood. Although i don't think MGS doesn't get the credit it deserved, it is and was on almost any list of good/influental games. Also the audio mixing could be a bit better, especially the cutscenes of mgs distracts a bit from your voice over
Metal gear solid created the delusion that video games can be cinematic masterpieces on par with movies. Without it, we wouldn’t have the glut of movie games today (uncharted, last of us, etc)
Gran Turismo was an influencial game in its' genre. Twisted Metal has started vehicular combat genre. Parrapa the Rapper was the first rhythm game if I remember correctly. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was surely influencial. Terracon (widely unknown game) was a PS1's Halo. Publisher refused to release the game in US just because it was "too innovative and unusual". I would also mention King's Field action/RPG series with its huge interconnected open world, dungeons, tons of secrets, weapons, armor and magic. Those games were SoulsBorns of the era. Series began even before the Elder Scrolls. And the third game introduced especially huge seamless open world with dungeons underneath each part of the map two years before Ocarina of Time.

Tomb Raider was a nice Saturn game. The magical lighting in there still amazes me till this day.

Sorry mate, splinter cell is hardly a knockoff. Syphon filter is the most metal gear non-metal gear game I can think of.
