Paul, I'm here wishing you all the best with your rehab...those first few days and weeks in the hospital are no fun. Rooting for you, my lovely internet friend. Welcome to the amputee club. 😉
I had my BKA on February 4th this year and because of the “rona” I was not in the hospital at all. I had surgery start at 7am and was discharged by 1pm. So I literally had to do everything on my own from the very first day. Between the doctor the physical therapist and the prosthetist have all said that they figure that’s why I am doing so well with everything. But honestly, I was so scared of everything because I was afraid I would fall, or one of my dogs would accidentally jump on me, or my grandson would accidentally hurt me that I was as afraid to be home or go anywhere. I did not like having to learn how to do simple things like getting into my bathroom alone, or how to get into my tub. Or getting in and out of my bed or wheelchair alone. I’m not anymore but for the first two weeks we really hard for me.
@@dwentlandt1022 wow that is the exact day I got mine,I was in hospital 3 days, now I’m lucky I guess to spend 4 weeks in a rehab facility, in Canada, so it’s all free even the prosthesis
Cancer truly sucks, but I'm glad to read you are in Canada (big win compared to the US), being treated well and medical costs are not a burden. I'm also rooting for you and wishing you the very best, from a fighter in Switzerland. You got this!
Hello Traxxas! Just wanted to say hi and my love goes out to you and all the prosthesists...you all make our days much easier and more comfortable. Thank you!! (BKA for 4.5 yrs)
This is definetly an odd question. Since your lower calf has no mobility since you don't have a meat foot remaining, are you at a higher risk for blood clots in your residual limb? Thank you for everything that you do, I LOVE your videos. I'm in school for Interior Decorating and love seeing how I would be able to make accommodations to designs so that they are more accessible for a variety of abilities. Stay safe!
I’m also an amputee and I’m going to try a socket at my limb centre next time I go. It’s basically made on my leg so I go, get measured, have my socket made and go! Also in summer I’m going to get a new knee which is COMPUTERISED!!!! Love from the north of England 🤍
That's what was done with me up here in Edinburgh :) they called it a flexiliner, it's sooo tight and they said it'll shape itself a little bit and warm up while using and wearing. That didn't really work with my leg, they had to use a hear gun to make it a bit wider. Fight to get the C Leg 4, everything else like the VGK or Rheo are rubbish imo. I have the Genium but that was covered by my German insurance 9 yrs ago, moved to Scotland 5 years ago and C-Leg 4 is the best which I can get here.
4:30 I have been an amputee for a bit longer than you, and I have had a great many prosthetists. I can say that how well your leg is fit makes a *HUGE* difference here. A leg that doesn't fit well will be intolerable, where a leg that is well fit can be worn all day long without much discomfort. There is defiantly a spectrum, and the prosthetist I have now is the best I've ever had. I won't settle for "good enough" any more.

Your enthusiasm and smiles during your video was relaxing and am absolute joy to watch. You really are a RUclipsr I specifically watch just to make my day better. Thank you.
I have always been interested in prosthetic limbs and have so many questions to which you have answered so many of them - thank you ever so much for this - so so interesting!
Questions: what’s more uncomfortable, a prosthetic on a good day or a bra on a bad day? Do your right and left shoes wear down at different rates? Do you have to keep your leg dry to prevent rust?
I have about a thousand questions, even having watched most of your very informative videos. The question that I can't keep off my mind is: how much does it weigh? Like for example when you're walking is the weight of both legs equal?
i became a below the knee amputee back in November. I am going to see a prosthetic company next week. i never realized everything that goes into this or how expensive it might be. i have had a lot of medical complications these last few years and i also struggle with ESRD which is kidney disease and i am on dialysis. my life has changed forever and i stay pretty positive because at least i am still alive. your video has opened my eyes to the long road i have ahead of me. thank you for sharing your journey

You have such a great attitude, not sure I’d be so accepting. I complained so much while recovering from hand surgery. I looked up how to tie my shoes with one hand and found this story
Hi Jo it’s Norm I have sent many messages asking questions well 7 days ago o I had my right leg amputation i listened to your shows and they have it at a right length so now I am learning all the pointers you put up in your video
Hi Jo, I remember seeing a video of an amputee lady walking with prosthetic leg, only at first glance this had appeared so realistic and skin tone, the only giveaway sign was a tiny space between the bottom of the leg and the foot.
Excellent job, Jo. I too use suction to hold my prosthetics on. My first permanent legs (two) cost a little less than $100K combined, but they were computer controlled. I now use simpler ankle/foot combos as I found the computer legs had to be charged every night and were just a real pain in the butt to maintain. These are easier to maintain. In summer (I live in the Kansas City area) I generally wear shorts which leads to a lot of questions, especially from kids. I love talking to the kids because they generally aren’t afraid to ask questions. You and I have a mutual acquaintance (Anika) whom I met a few years ago at a Hanger Prosthetics meeting in Kansas City. She’s a very cool person. I like her a lot. I also have issues with with my suspension sleeves especially in the summer causing blisters where they fit closely at the top. Cutting a “wave form” around the top has just about cured my issues as it loosens the top just a bit. Anyway, again, great job!
Another Amputee Annika here 😁🙋♀️ I'm from Germany living in Scotland for 5 years, above knee Amputee since 9. 5 years and rotary plasty before that. I got to know yet another Annika from Canada who also has a rotary plasty surgery done 40 years ago. The world is soo small, even within Amputees 🌍😂
Hi Jo. I’ve always wondered how heavy is your prothetic leg and is it strange having one side of your body either heavier or lighter than the other side? Love from the UK.
My prosthetist is a BK himself so that definitely helps. I like to hike and i have been using the Fillauer All Pro foot and now going to try the Kinterra foot. I wasn’t to crazy on the Ottobock Taleo but I have heard lots of good things about that foot. I have been using the pin style socket as its cooler and faster to take on and off my new leg im having built to be able to do pin or vacuum depending on what i am doing that day.
I thought you where in a vacuum this entire time...I'm in a suction myself, but without an outer liner, and I have to wear socks under my liner when I shrink in volume, I love wicker socks!!
i have a prosthetic leg with a mixed system: vacuum and pin connection. As far as I know it is the latest model for transtibial prosthetics. In my country, Portugal, these prosthethics are provided by the health care system free of charge to the patient
Hi, my name is Jessie live in Baltimore city I am a below the knee amputee I am so glad that I found you and a few other amputees because it has helped me through this journey I'm moving right along and I teach martial arts
I’m thinking about having my ankle amputated. I have an appointment this Friday. I have a fused ankle for about 10 yrs going on 11 this year. Hurts so much to walk. This video helped a lot
Hey! I’m so sorry that you’ve had to deal with that for so long. I had a fused ankle for 11 years prior to mine. I’m wishing you all the best and fingers crossed that you & your surgeon team come to the best possible decision for you 💜
Ok the first time I saw someone who was a amputee I was like 3 or 4 and I ran up to them super excited and just asked them "Are you a robot?" and looking back I get so embarrassed but I love how she responded and that's why I still remember it she took of her leg and just said "Ya I'm a robot I got my limb attachments." She then put her leg back on. It was just the coolest thing to my little brain. But super embarrassed when I remember it.
As this video got recommended to me I was just designing the prosthetic leg of a character concept art for work. Been subscribed for a few months now but the timing is wild lol
Great video❤! I’m recently got a below knee amputation due to a accident. I was gotta join NYPD but now it seems impossible for me because of the amputation. But nypd told me that I can still do it if I can pass the training and their doctor says ok. So there’s hope for me to still become a nypd! do you think that’s possible?
Hi Jo! Do you use the same sleeve for Scissors, Sunshine, and Bologna or do you have a specific sleeve for each leg? Also, do you wear sandals? I recall tennis shoes in the videos, and I remember you chose to get the split toe foot so that you could wear sandals.
Good question, Kari! I use different sleeves just because its hard to change them. 😊 And I don't wear sandals because they fall off way too easily haha! Even with the split toe
@@FootlessJo Thank you for the reply! I definitely understand the idea of using different sleeves. I kept thinking that would get tiresome to move from leg to leg. That is sad that you don’t get to do sandals, but I guess the bright side is less shoes to buy and store. More money for fun hiking and running adventures.
I live in Ignacio Colorado. I have Medicaid and have been dragged through the mud for proper prosthetics. It’s been really sad to lose my Colorado girl life over the years. I watched both happy and sad, I miss biking and hiking. The girl of the days of old. I’m sure they don’t think of that when they are doling out crappy legs. If they would have given me what I needed I could have lifted myself out of poverty and never needed a thing from them again but they don’t see the human side of it. Thank you for putting out their the reality of the cost. Even after 12 year I have to tell my family over and over but it’s just my reality, not theirs. 💐🔥🙏🏼
I have had trouble with skin problems because I have scleroderma as well. Lately I've beenso swollen it literally was impossible to put my leg on. Sometimes it takes 3 hours. My hands hurt so badly I can't even get shrinkers on. Any advice? Ps- Thanks for doing your wonderful videos. I learned more on RUclips than from my medical people.
Even though I'm am an amputee myself for over 2 years now, I really loved your video. Great information and hearing that other got the same struggles really helps🦿😍
I did not know it was limb loss and limb difference month!!! I have a limb difference and had NO idea. Jo, thank you for bringing this to my attention 😁
I lloved this video, I want to get into the medicine-surgical-enginering field so all this information was really interesting and educational for me, thank you. I new some of it from watching your other videos. Love you and hope you're feeling well whenever you read this 🥰.
I too use a prosthetic foot. It has similar dimensions to the lost limb and it's simply where I expect a foot and ankle to be. The perception is similar to the way you can so easily touch parts of your body that you can't see, like your ear lobes, without a mirror. If something like a table leg blocks the motion of my foot my calf can feel that the prosthetic foot's movement is obstructed even if I'm looking in a different direction or my view is blocked by something like a tabletop. I never tried skiing but I suspect it' feels a lot like wearing a snow skiing boot.
This is gonna sound weird, but after my grandmother had her lower leg amputated and died shortly thereafter (unrelated to the amputation, but the amputation and her death were both related to smoking her entire life) when I was quite young, I was always very weird (not discriminatory, just strangely frightened of) the idea of amputation. Finding your channel has been amazing as it's finally kicked that bizarre mental hiccup of mine, and also because you're just so entertaining and interesting as a person. Your story is insane, and you've done amazingly well. Thank you for sharing a piece of your life with us. 🥰
Excellent video! Thank you so much Jo❣️. I have a question for you. I am a new amputee and was wondering how often you wear compression socks? I know we need to give our residual limb some “air time” ~ no pun intended~ but I know compression socks are important too. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I have learned so much.
I wear a (Ottobock) C-brace it's not a prosthetic but has all the same workings just hooked to a brace. It's holding me over while the VA juggles the amputation idea. Like you stated the cost of these devices are insane. That was the biggest shock for me. A medical device that lasts a few years costs more than some houses.
@@redsorgum they've been great about assistive devices. I been amazed by the prosthetics/orthotics and physical therapy. The rest of the VA has been less than desirable. Hopefully it gets better.
“thank u for choosing to hang out with me for a few minutes” jo it hasn’t been a few minutes i’ve been watching hours of your videos the past few days 😳💞
My baby girl was just born missing her tibia in both lower legs (extremely rare) and will need both legs amputated. We are worried about cost of prosthetic legs. We would love to hear what kind of grants are out there…Ps your positivity is amazing ♥️
Have a buddy who has one to, on his left leg. I know the Texas summer heat bothers it a little, and he a welder/machinist. He on his feet all day at the shop
You are very cool. I love your videos. You have taught me a lot about amputees. You are very very inspirational and I cant say how much I love your videos.
Does the lack of a foot affect your circulation or long-term risks for related health concerns? I know that both feet and calves are pretty important for returning blood to the heart and that's a part of why being sedentary is detrimental and can affect your brain health and I'm curious how much the compression of your sleeve is able to make up for that absence.
Do you use crutches in other situations? Like if you’re sick, or just don’t want to put on your prosthetic? I’d never want to put it on unless I’m going and doing something (just like with pants or a bra) 😂
Thank you for the video, you made it fun and enjoyable to watch. I am bi-lateral BK amputee. Wonder how do you like the vacuum system? I am wondering whether I should try it out?
Drink videos, they are very helpful. I am asking for a friend bran. Because they are about to get their prosthetic leg and was wondering how do they a take showers?
This is a question that I found the answer out to in one of your previous videos, but something I wondered about for years previously. So It might be something you'd want to put in a future video like this. I always wondered why people with prosthetic legs always seemed to wear shorts. I used to think "are they showing off their prosthetic legs? Do they want to draw attention to it?" I have since learned from you that sometimes you have to do a lot of fiddling with it during the course of the day and it's just easier if you're wearing shorts. So this might be a question you might want to add to a future video.
Hello there, thank you so so much for this. I’m currently writing a character who is an amputee and this has been so so informative. There is something I was wondering about though. I know you said that you have a suction system for your leg, but what other kinds are there? I want to be sure I have as much information as I possibly can. Being disabled myself (Blind), I cannot express how annoying poor representation is, so I’m trying to make this as accurate as I can
Hey, I just wanted to encourage you and to really thank you for the efforts of yours to represent different people with disabilities in your writings! It's so cool when representation is given by an informed writer, props for going the extra mile! I am impressed and wish you the best! Is your work still in progress? If not, where can we enjoy it? I'm very curious about passion projects of this kind!
I'm an Amputee and believe me walking is already great exercise. We use our muscles in a different way than with the healthy leg and we use around 30% more energy when walking than people with two healthy legs
When finally the virus is gone you are very welcome to Europe again, at least here in Scandinavia I haven´t heard of restrictions around rollercoasters for prostetics, if you came with crutches you´d have to give them to the staff during the ride but prostetics are ok, I guess it´s the same in all of EU.
Hi Jo, thank you for your videos they are well presented and informative. I do wonder if you experience any issues with your back due to having a prosthetic leg? I just wondered if your walk is different than before if that gives you any problems or discomfort in your hips or back? Thank you. Jenna
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Been binge watching Grey's Anatomy and got curious about prosthetics and how they work after Arizona had to get one. I think my only remaining question would be if it was possible to still be able to walk if you had TWO prosthetic legs, or if one regular leg is still needed to maintain balance? Or do you have to have a different type of prosthetic if you require one for each leg? And then if you've lost both legs, will the insurance still only pay for one of them?
I'm wondering if it is an option to have a few sets of liners and sleeves - as one usually have several socks - so you have the option of just ripping the layers off and go to bed if you're tired, put on a clean set the next day, and wash the used ones when you feel up to it? Or maybe even have the option of changing liner and/or sleeve during the day if you get extra sweaty or maybe dirty/dog hairy for some reason? AND have immediate available reserves if one tears. Is there a good reason to only have one set, or is it a question of economy?
After I wrote the comment above I rewatched the "AMPUTEE Night Routine!" video and realised you have at least partly already answered my question. 😃👍🏻🤝
One question I have about lost limbs is the sensation you feel afterward... Like, your leg ends. There's a bottom to your calf area. What does that feel like?? If you touch it, how/where do you feel it? Phantom sensation aside, I would think that the new edges of your limb would create new sensations... Obviously something difficult to describe or relay to another, but it makes me so curious... As always, thanks for the info and your candor! 😁
I am a new btk amputee. The simple answer is you feel a sensation where it used to be. Like if I run my finger across the end of my residual limb it tickles the back of my calf because that's actually what I am touching. I have had some phantom sensation and pain but it's not been that bad. Like sometimes my ankle that isn't there hurts but the pain will go away if I stare at my residual limb for a few seconds.
I just had a bk amputation on account of cancer, literally in rehab watching this, you are helpful and fun to watch.

Thank you. Ill be getting mine in 2 weeks. Looking forward to just getting up and moving.
I received my amputation eight months ago. Wishing you all the best. Be patient!
Thank you for all the informations, very useful videos
Hi, my name is Jessie live in Baltimore city I am a below the knee amputee I am so glad that I found you and a few other amputees because it has helped me through this journey I'm moving right along and I teach martial arts
I’m thinking about having my ankle amputated. I have an appointment this Friday. I have a fused ankle for about 10 yrs going on 11 this year. Hurts so much to walk. This video helped a lot
Hey! I’m so sorry that you’ve had to deal with that for so long. I had a fused ankle for 11 years prior to mine. I’m wishing you all the best and fingers crossed that you & your surgeon team come to the best possible decision for you 💜
Loved you’re video👍🏼👍🏼 this information was really helpful and clarified a lot of things🙂
I just had a below knee amputation on account of Diabetes, in rehab watching this, you are very helpful. :-)
I had a problem with my shin bone extruding to far, and I have a socket system I used memory foam in between the silicone and leg greatly improved.
@@karilinville5337 im an Amputee as well and mostly wear sneakers. To walk in them with a prothestic leg is for me just most comfortable
Thank u for sharing all of your information!!!!
Been binge watching your channel since I watched one video you’re a lot of fun I hope you’re doing well 💖🙏🏼
Even though I'm am an amputee myself for over 2 years now, I really loved your video. Great information and hearing that other got the same struggles really helps🦿😍
I'm writing about a character with a prosthetic leg, so this is really helpful! Thank you!
I did not know it was limb loss and limb difference month!!! I have a limb difference and had NO idea. Jo, thank you for bringing this to my attention 😁
Totally awesome!!! I learned so much from you today.
I lloved this video, I want to get into the medicine-surgical-enginering field so all this information was really interesting and educational for me, thank you. I new some of it from watching your other videos. Love you and hope you're feeling well whenever you read this 🥰.
Thank you for another positive and informative video! I always enjoy these Jo. :)
Question for Jo. I assume an impact like stubing your foot for example sends a "shock" up your leg and into your remaining limb?
I too use a prosthetic foot. It has similar dimensions to the lost limb and it's simply where I expect a foot and ankle to be. The perception is similar to the way you can so easily touch parts of your body that you can't see, like your ear lobes, without a mirror. If something like a table leg blocks the motion of my foot my calf can feel that the prosthetic foot's movement is obstructed even if I'm looking in a different direction or my view is blocked by something like a tabletop. I never tried skiing but I suspect it' feels a lot like wearing a snow skiing boot.
I just lost my right leg below knee recently. I admire your drive. It gives me hope. Veteran waiting on the VA. Hurry up, and wait! haha! xD
Very interesting video. Thanks for sharing.
You're such an amazing orator... God bless you in everything you do ❤️
I wear a (Ottobock) C-brace it's not a prosthetic but has all the same workings just hooked to a brace. It's holding me over while the VA juggles the amputation idea. Like you stated the cost of these devices are insane. That was the biggest shock for me. A medical device that lasts a few years costs more than some houses.
Army veteran here, I hope the VA can help you. I’m also having walking issues, the VA has been helpful to me. 💪🇺🇸💪✌️
@@redsorgum they've been great about assistive devices. I been amazed by the prosthetics/orthotics and physical therapy. The rest of the VA has been less than desirable. Hopefully it gets better.
Stay strong, Big love from Libya💓
Mahalo jo lots of questions i had you answered getting my leg in a couple of weeks been 1 year on the i walk thanks .
My leg is a suction cup/pin and socket combination. Works well for me as a driver.
Good question! Definitely! I'll use my iWalk or crutches if I'm sick or laid up in bed or just don't feel like putting it all on 😆
Thank you for the video, you made it fun and enjoyable to watch. I am bi-lateral BK amputee. Wonder how do you like the vacuum system? I am wondering whether I should try it out?
I appreciate your reference to the mythology of my people. Fun fact; I live in Tórshavn. It translates as Thor's harbour
Oh no way!! That's awesome! 😊

I know baby powder won't probably work because it won't be able to create great suction, but is there a product you can use to help with the smell?
Actually, the Liner Wand (cleaning solution!) does an amazing job of helping with smell!! That and just cleaning it every night :-)
I love your stories. Your amazing
Just had same in Sydney Australia very interesting Happy xmas
Great video 🙂
Is there any way to workout upper part of you leg. The part over the prosthetic? So you don't loose too much muscle? 🙂
I'm an Amputee and believe me walking is already great exercise. We use our muscles in a different way than with the healthy leg and we use around 30% more energy when walking than people with two healthy legs
As always, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for another great video Jo! I was just wondering how you've found swimming, if you've been, since your amputation? Lots of love from the UK :)
Ah that's so awesome!!!
Hi Jo, thank you for your videos they are well presented and informative. I do wonder if you experience any issues with your back due to having a prosthetic leg? I just wondered if your walk is different than before if that gives you any problems or discomfort in your hips or back? Thank you. Jenna
i had the little sylicone patch with my first leg just got my 3rd leg last week
“And rubber doesn’t breathe very well” telling it straight 😂😉😘
@@oldnorthstateoutdoors2002 thanks!! So interesting...
