Thomas Midgley Jr was a chemical engineer from the start of the 20th century that was instrumental in the popularization of leaded gas and CFCs which were massive environmental disasters. I talk about the chemistry of why CFCs destroyed the ozone layer as well as the issues with leaded gasoline and why it was used in automobiles and is still used in aircraft today.
