For sport it's a great place to start, for fighting terrible.

I'm not sure it is terrible. I see a lot of butterfly guard in UFC. It's nice for managing distance and sweeping. Additionally you can always try to move your opponent away and stand back up. I'm not saying you should sit down in a fight, but if you end up on your back, it's one of the better guards.

I think David is right. If you fight with strikes, it´s importanten to react immediately in this type of guard. You can´t hang on to your opponent, like in closed guard due to lack of control. But if you go straight for the sweep, leg attack or into distance management for upkicks or technical standups it´s not that terrible.
Terrible would be all kinds of De La Riva or inverted Guards ;-)

@@davidswygart7472 yeah guys I meant this application of butterfly guard. Manage the distance manage the damage. Definitely on your back with up kicks is more applicable for the street. Just looking out for the guys that are new to rolling and see this don't want them to adopt this position for the street as shown. No disrespect to the channel.

Of course. That's why this is a jiu jitsu channel. And not a mma/self defense channel

@@karezmatik77 thats the issue this is not stated up front so how is the untrained to know hey never do this in a self defense encounter unless the teacher or some who knows the context points it out? Or are you stating that the only people who watch this are sport JJ players?
