Love this channel and your knowledge to catch stripers is huge. We have caught plenty with great captains and there charters but just bought a targa tracker and wanted to catch them in the mouth of the river. Used your method plus a three swivel with weight method and we caught our first ones on our own. Thanks brother
I finally got a boat with my brother. I really appreciate how you let us learn from what you do. I will be sure to use your methods as we put it in the water this spring. Thanks again Mike
Love it brother!! Thanks for taking the time to comment! Catch em all!!
I really like your teaching style,(simple) and very easy to understand, and congratulations on putting your boy on a 51 lb,🏆that’s so friggin dope
Thanks Ken!! 😁👍
Some guys offered us eels a couple days ago, we took them only because we didn’t have any bait. We were low key talking shit saying that these eels weren’t going to work. 30min later we caught the BIGGEST striper I’ve ever seen. Shit was soo wild that we had to go back and get some more eels just for reassurance. The next day we went back with the eels and caught 5 MONSTER stripers within 2hr. It was unbelievable, from now on our go to bait are eels.
YEP😁
Were you on the beach a boat or pier?

Beautiful fish man. Thanks for showing how to release them. Feel like a lot of people don't do it and a lot just do it poorly, seems like you have a good system.
Thank you brother!! 👍👍
Good info n yeah Hog of a Striper!!!
I think hes making a slight left turn just playin around love fishing and the vibes brotha
🤭
Just letting you know I watched this video on my way to my boat. I stopped and picked up 3 eels and trolled just like you said and I hooked up. First time I've ever had any success with eels. they usually end up in a knot and all my stuff is tangled. Thanks for the tip.
Hell yeah Butch!!!!! I love it brother!! Thanks for the comment. It has been the secret to my biggest bass ever. 👍👍. Keep me posted!
used to catch eels in keyport nj at night and take them down to the highlands bridge. big fish
Man that's a monster! Nice one brother.
Thanks brother!! Appreciate your support!!
Great I fo man u have all the knowledge on that water I fishrd wit feels from land and used a bobber so the eel could not get to the bottom some times it works other times they some how climb up the line and tangle around the bobber
Thanks for the great vid. Man! Nice fish...
Thanks brother!!😁
We saw your facebook post this morning , good, vid and awesome fish.
Thanks Brother!! I appreciate that!
Never seen Striper anywhere near that large! What an awesome day of fishing! Oh...new subscriber!
Larry D Thanks brother!!! I appreciate that!! I just posted a video of my Son catching a 61. 😁👍👍
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I have seen them in the 30--35 lb.range...but now a 61 lb.er...wow! Makes me wonder how old these mammoth Striper's really are.
Larry D Definitely a very special fish!! Was very cool to see her swim away. 😁 thanks again brother!!
What reels do you use pulling the planer boards? I really like the way they fight the fish. Due to my health I had to stop for a while! Hopefully I can get back in it next year! Thanks and another great video! God Bless
Cpt teach me your ways! I'm a vet and I'm looking to start my own charter business. I watch your videos every day man and I'd love to get out on the water with ya and go to school. I live in mass and spend alot of time down in old Saybrook CT. My girlfriend has some property down in cape may and I have yet to touch those waters and I can't wait to give it hell this year. I can travel to wherever brother and if you have any availability in the spring I'd love to link up and get some
Congrats awesome fish for sure u never disappoint
Thanks Brother!!! 😁😁😁
Man I love your videos! Wanted to use planer board for a long time and finally picked some up for the open ocean off cape cod on calm days. Sounds like they are great for fishing lots of rods/covering lots of area when fish are close to the surface. I assume if I mark most fish at 20ft and deeper planer boards aren't the way to go, or is there likely bass I'm not marking up top? WiIl Experiment :)
Thanks brother!! Definitely experiment!! better to be above the fish than below for most breeds.
Nice fish! -
Thanks brother
Nice one brother. One of these days I’m gonna get a boat big enough for that water 😉
DO IT. DO IT NOW.
You already have a boat.
If the wind forecast isn’t to bad I am going to shoot for the weekend after Christmas. Take a chance at one of those 50’s

Your Welcome 👍
What time of year is the best for those big pigs? We head to Oregon each year to catch and release big white sturgeon. Would love to come that way one of these times for a bass of a lifetime. Thanks alot for another great video
December for the biggest.
New to MD fishing and want to take my son out for some striper on our small 19ft. Im up by the Key Bridge. Any tips!?!? Thanks for the vids, man! Been binging them for hours now!
EnterNameHere I would troll to get started. That’s your best bet until you learn the areas better. Fish the edges of the main channels to start. Troll simple mojo chute rigs like these amzn.to/32pOp1o
There are some Striper there all year, but the big numbers won’t show up until fall/winter.
How late into the winter do you guys usually get them . Not asking for specifics but what area would be a good starting point .? We trolled eels up in the Raritan it was very effective, took alot of tips from your video . Thanks mike
Awesome!! I appreciate the comment. The biggest factor is water temp. I don’t even think of moving south until water is below 46-47. Some fish stay all year.
How do you keep your eels from “spinning” when trolling?
Im really crawling. I vary speed, but rarely go very fast. Usually I’m just a few tenths of a mph over what the current gives me. If your eels are healthy they swim along fine. If you see birds behind your floats you’re spinning them 😛.
Dam that’s a big fish
👍👍😁😁
Wow! Bucket list striper! Quick question, who won the Stiper stealth rod?
Thanks brother! A guy named Christian won the rod, and Catch the Fever added a beanie for a second winner and Brian Hast won that. Kaleb from CTF did the drawing. Keep watching brother, we will be giving a few more away and some other cool stuff too!! Thanks for your continued Support Matt!
What clips do u use on your Zakk Royce boards
Rodney Coppersmith They are Scotty clips. 👍
Hello, how can I find out more about these floats / boards you use?
I like your channel and tips with simrad.
Sure! The floats are made by RediRig. You want the TOS planer floats. I designed them for RediRig. Team Old School float. (I don’t get a cut or anything, just free floats)😁. I’m using Zakk Royce signature planer boards here, but there are LOTS of good ones around. Zakk is on Facebook and can hook you up. Thanks for watching brother!
How do I get an Old School Black insulated jacket ?
Those are just patches. I will be getting more made soon. Email me later this fall and I’ll send you a few. 👍👍mikesmedley9@gmail.com
I'm sure you have mentioned it at some point, but can you take a moment to share the specific name of your Motor Guide with any other details that could be helpful in making my own purchase?
Xi5 36 volt. 👍👍
Where’s this bait store at, need to buy some els
I get them at Chris bait and tackle on the eastern side and Oceans east on the western side of the bay.
If u wanna fish Newburgh bay on the Hudson next May let me know I can get u free launch and explain how we fish. Would love to see how u do it.
Raymond Bushey Would love to, I’m always looking for new spots to fish, we were actually supposed to do a video up there this past May with Keepin it Reel, but we were on a huge bite in the lower Raritan and didn’t want to leave it😉. I used to run charters on the Roanoke River in NC many years ago, it’s a very similar fishery. We would drift big River Herring before they were protected with floats. Huge numbers there. Shoot me an email in April, maybe we can connect and shoot some video 👍👍👍 mikesmedley9@gmail.com thanks brother!
Alight cool. www.stripers247.com/phpBB2/showthread.php?t=41710&page=16 Here is a link to a form about the fishing. Lots of guys talk about how they fish too
I shore fish in albany area, gotta start heading south a bit to fish Newburg area !
How deep are you trolling the eels? Do you want them to be close to the bottom?
Anywhere from 5 feet to 40 feet behind the boards. They will pull straight down when lively.
Where did you buy these in holder rod holders
I looked all over for it I can’t find it
Call Joey Scruggs. He will hook you up. +1 (434) 907-1656
Up here on the hudson river we drift fish and alot of times we are moving 1-1.5 mph
With eels should i leave the baitrunner open and let them run with it a second or keep it closed? Circle hooks are mandatory
I wouldn’t. You are moving at the same pace as the river so speed won’t affect the hook up unless your anchored
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thank you sir
One more question. Lol
Do you think the color of the beads make a difference? Thanks for the replys. Broke my personal best fish 3 times this season after watching your videos. 👍👍👍
Iya ya Allah.
U playing a shark could gone with your hand and the damn fish
😁 No sharks in the bay this times of year. Water is in low 40’s.
Lol i always laugh when you guys go to weight the fish and theres multiple people with there hands on the bottom part of the gripper, nice fish though.
It’s tough to keep that spring scale from bouncing all over the place in a rocking boat. If you don’t pinch your fingers right on the gap the fish will never stop bouncing. I don’t keep big fish anymore but when I did you would see a pretty big difference in what a fish weighs on land versus in the rocking boat. Not to mention the shaking arms when holding a 50lb plus fish up and away from your body without the tail touching the deck. The struggle is real 🤣
Hew thought the first fish was orange lol
😂😂
Stop dragging the fish along the side of the boat for 45 mins and just put the freakin fish in the dam cooler.....😡
Come on bro that was WAY more than 45 minutes!
Seriously. It’s illegal. No fish over 38”. We don’t kill big breeders anyway.
That was just 1 fish. Where are the rest? Even a idiot gets lucky once in awhile .
AN Idiot.
