phi slama jama was the best college team to never get a ring, in my opinion, 80s college hoops was a real thing of beauty, glad I was able to see it for myself
This game is epic a true track meet slam fest between these superstars and the the awesome commentators I just can't believe how good we had it back then!
The 1983 houston cougars was the second best college basketball team I ever saw. The first being the 1984 georgetown hoyas. I am still in awe that the houston cougars points were mostly dunks in high altitude, low oxygen level albuqerque.
The couldn't have won championships with that free throw shooting. Both teams were awful, but especially Houston. Also, without growing up with the 3-point line, the Houston players couldn't shoot from outside. Actually, neither team could. It would take a few years in the NBA before Clyde became a good outside shooter. He also eventually learned to shoot free throws, as did Olajuwon. A smart team would shoot threes and foul the Houston players inside. Also, players these days would take charges and the starters of both of these teams would be on the bench in foul trouble practically the entire game. No way of knowing how the teams would translate to today, because the game was so different.
@@mdmcdd1117- This Houston team was/is my favorite team ever, but there are so many holes in the game. Of course, if they all grew up in the time of the 3-point shot, every single one of them would have focused on shooting more than they did. I will never understand why college players don't work on free throws every morning and every night.

Guy Lewis throws a towel and hits a Louisville player at 30:05. It stops a fast break and definite 2 points. Guy Lewis gets a technical and the announcers laugh that it was a “reflex reaction”. Boy times have changed....
The freakishly gifted, Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Ralph Sampson winning the A.P. "N.C.A.A." Basketball Player of the Year 3 years in a row is something we may never see again for a multitude of reasons.
Phi Slama Jama at its best!!! Clyde The Glide Drexler and The Dream, Hakeem Olajuwon and company were fantastic in 1983!! One of the best teams ever in college basketball history to not win a title. Inside and out they were electric and would wear you out!! I feel bad for Coach Lewis for not ever winning a title in I believe 3 opportunities. He was one of the best college coach's in history but yet never mentioned today.
I have a feeling the current generation is going to witness another Phi Slama Jama here pretty soon. Houston is back at #1 here in 2023 and also heading back to the conference where they belong. GO COOGS!!! 👍
Met Rodney McCray when he became a Rocket at the upscale fitness club right next to the Summit (which is what the arena was called then). Nice guy----really reserved.
It seemed like such a slow first half yet they’re in the 40s. So different than how the game is played today. Also that halftime commercial for Mazda. What a crappy vehicle!
Phi Slama Jama vs. the Doctors of Dunk. If there was a better college basketball game, I don't know of it. Only games I can think of that come close were the 85 championship between G-town and Nova, Duke vs. UK with the legendary Laettner shot, and the Big East tourney game of about 10 years ago where UConn and Syracuse went to 6 overtimes.
Certainly no reason for the Cards to have any shame. Cougs were totally stacked and they played them more than the Cougs expected. Best game of the whole tournament.
1:32:49 Michael Young makes the last shot of the game with a beautiful finger roll and a Houston cheerleader runs to the floor and passes Young to hug Clyde The Glide. The ladies were definitely attracted to Cool Clyde.
This was considered the de facto championship game. At 3:30 time slot, Announcers stated that Louisville should have started fouling because Houston couldn’t hit free throws. I forgot how close this game was late in the game . I thought it was a blow out
After Micheaux fouled out, UH upped its defensive intensity. They got lots of steals and forced turnovers. Then ran out to a 10+ point lead that held up rest of the game. Billy Thompson's missed dunk then next shot he also missed was key late point in the game. Lancaster Gordon was smooth and impressive. Charles Jones was mostly outclassed, poor fundamentals though he could get up.
The television commercial by the "N.C.A.A." in this 1983 "Final Four" game featuring the "Volunteers for Youth" program would be eerily fortelling. The following year in 1984, the " N.C.A.A." would be rocked by the shooting death of the #1 high school basketball player in America named ben wilson. Then less than 2 years after that, the "N.C.A.A." would be rocked by one of its own athletes dying from cardiac arrest because of a cocaine overdose named len bias inside a dormatory room at the university of maryland. Both tragic incidents would be life lessons that reverberate to this day for generations of American youths, and that the "N.C.A.A." could not have conceived in their worst nightmares at the start of the Ronald Reagan presidency. The "N.C.A.A." mirrored and reflected the Reagan presidency rather they acknowledge it or not.
***** Drexler was better in every aspect! Rodney was a good Pro but for where he was drafted a bit of a bust! Who did you think Bird would have rather play against in the 84 Finals, Drexler or McCray? I saw McCray because it was the same as having the night off!
@@Capdirtbag I see your point but think Rodney was a better defender than Clyde. Drexler was never known for his defensive prowess in the NBA. McCray was a good low post defender of forwards.
Rodney McCray was drafted third overall in the 1883 behind Ralph Sampson Virginia (Houston Rockets), Steve Stepanovich of Missouri (Indiana Pacers) . Clyde was drafted in 1984

The "N.C.A.A." commercial in this 1983 "Final Four" game advertising a collegiate education is laughable, especially in this day and age. This is the same "N.C.A.A." that has become a $14 billion industry, and the primary contributors for all that capital are the, forgive my laughter, "student athletes", who don't receive one penny of that $14 billion. The "N.C.A.A." came of age during the President Ronald Reagan-era, primarily because of the, to some, frightening financial deregulation of the television and cable television industry. Simply put, more exposure meant more money. This is why during the Reagan years, there were so many college boosters willing to break the rules to sign gifted athletes to their alma mater. I guess the only thing the N.C.A.A." could educate a "student athlete" is indentured servitude/exploitation.
