- “I’m returning to see with my own eyes what has become of this city that has made my father and me who we are today.” These are the words of AJ+ Senior Presenter Dena Takruri as she journeys through the Old City of Hebron in her new documentary ‘How Israeli Apartheid Destroyed my Hometown’.
This personal documentary sees Takruri retrace her father’s footsteps through her family’s hometown in the occupied West Bank. A once bustling and vibrant cultural center, today Palestinians in the Old City of Hebron endure harassment and violence among other daily indignities under the ongoing Israeli occupation.
Hebron is the second largest city in the occupied West Bank and is where more than 30,000 Palestinians live under Israeli military control. Doctors Without Borders says “it is one of the most restricted areas within the West Bank, and has become an epicenter of violence against Palestinian residents”. For Palestinians who live there, their daily lives are subject to movement restrictions, permanent checkpoints and increasing digital surveillance.
During her visit, Takruri hears from Palestinians about their experiences as well as former Israeli soldiers who now work with Breaking the Silence in an effort to raise awareness and bring an end to the occupation.
On this episode of The Stream, we’ll discuss what life is like under occupation for Palestinians in Hebron and the challenges of reporting and speaking out.

Hi! I live in Beirut and working as a teacher in Shatila camp. Last summer I spent over ten days in Al Khalil, taking photos for one of the six NGOs that have been closed by the military. It has been an overwhelming experience,in terms of emotions, because every single day I faced, saw, experienced and witnessed how the Israeli authorities subjected Palestinians to forced evictions, arbitrary detention, torture and other ill-treatment, all committed with almost total impunity. Thank you very much for reporting this unlawful occupation.

Did anyone else find it annoying how much the interviewer interrupted the guests in the middle of a conversation.
I am just saying the picture for the video is not what it seems.
The picture makes it seem at first glance that a soldier is pointing a weapon at a woman, but if you take extra time into viewing the picture you can see that the soldier is pointing his weapon past her with he woman being closer to the camera, rather than the wall which the soldiers are hugging.

All I know is the jewish population of Palestine was 11%. In 1922.
How far back in time do we have to go to find the majority population was predominantly Jewish?

You ask good questions. As someone who has lived years in Israel and years in the West Bank of Palestine...in Hebron... I can tell you (1) security is the reason/excuse for *everything*. That is to say, Israel claims security as a reason, regardless of the situation. If there are cameras and outposts everywhere in Hebron (and there are), then any filming anywhere is "a security violation", no? (2) Most of the settlers (people living in the West Bank) are not people born in Israel; they are immigrants from the US and Europe. Did you notice the cages on the balconies of the apartments on Shuhada Street? The Palestinians constructed those to keep out the rocks thrown daily by settlers, young and old. I have been in those apartments. This is historical downtown Hebron, near the 3rd holiest mosque in all of Islam, an area now long closed off to Hebronites. It used to be the center of town! Regarding "the need for protection", i.e. Israeli settler protection, I think you mean, I urge you to read histories of the conflict and particularly West Bank history. I can recommend, by Israeli authors, to start with, Eyal Weizman's Hollow Land, Avi Raz's The Bride and The Dowry, and especially Neve Gordon's Israel's Occupation. Finally, I hope you go one day to visit Israel/Palestine. Everyone should! It is an amazing place.

The rioters did not spare women, children, or the aged; the British gave passive assent. Sixty-seven were killed, 60 wounded, the community was destroyed, synagogues razed, and Torah scrolls burned.
A total of 59 of the 67 victims were buried in a common grave in the Jewish cemetery (including 23 who had been murdered and dismembered in one house alone), and the surviving Jews fled to Jerusalem. (During the violence, Haj Issa el-Kourdieh - a local Arab who lived in a house in the Jewish Quarter - sheltered 33 Jews in his basement and protected them from the rioting mob.)
In 1931, 31 Jewish families returned to Hebron and re-established the community. This effort was short-lived, however, and, in April 1936, fearing another massacre, the British authorities evacuated the community.
Following the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, and the invasion by Arab armies, Hebron was captured and occupied by the Jordanian Arab Legion. During the Jordanian occupation, which lasted until 1967, Jews were not permitted to live in the city, nor - despite the Armistice Agreement - to visit or pray at the Jewish holy sites in the city. Additionally, the Jordanian authorities and local residents undertook a systematic campaign to eliminate any evidence of the Jewish presence in the city. They razed the Jewish Quarter, desecrated the Jewish cemetery and built an animal pen on the ruins of the Avraham Avinu synagogue.
