The thing is, this year is the best year to test bo3s, because most of ppl have all their time staying home due to pandemic. In fact you can prevent some ppl who got bored and went outside to help the COVID transmit.
It doesn't need to be tested. Not sure if you're aware but both EU and NA both had a bo3 format in 2017 so it's already been tested. They didn't keep it going and unfortunately I don't ever expect them to go back.
Honestly I just want more league of legends to watch pretty much always, so to me bo3 regardless will always be better than bo1 but I guess to the more casual fan that is not the case
Every casual fan just seems to want a Michael bay experience in game. The ppl I know would not even care about analysis and stuff. LS, Frosk, Azeal talking in a pregame they’d pay no attention to.
I can see the point he makes about 8 teams making playoffs but I still think its excessive. If we really deep digger into the LCS format I think we can all agree that BO3 are better for LCS. But if Riot is going to choose an 8 team format for a single split why not just literally combine spring and summer split then? That way literally 80% of the league does not go to playoffs. At the moment spring split is literally useless and is only for MSI or LCS can at least attempt the LEC format where they count points for the spring split to help playoff seeding for the summer. That way teams get rewarded for there performance throughout the year since there is no gauntlet. If you dig deeper into Danan argument which in his case he references C9 miracle run, that run was literally predicated on the fact that C9 did well in spring which gave them enough points for gauntlet. And another thing is why get rid of gauntlet when you have two splits? LCS this year really fumbled there formats. There was teams such as flyquest who got second in spring split and it literally meant absolutely nothing. And i guess to compensate for fucking up the format they decided to do an 8 team playoff for summer? That is ridiculous and in no way shape or form acceptable.
I think the best example of a league that monte is espousing is the NHL. people come from around the world to north america to win the Stanley cup. The team that wins the Stanley cup faces the stiffest competition. All other tournaments, I.e. Olympics, are secondary.
Is there any data based on viewership of the “super week” where lec broadcasted on a Sunday? I like the best of one format because it takes less time to follow your team- even though a best of one says less then a best of three. However I truly believe the best teams will still easily reach playoffs where we have best of 5
I Think it would benefit the leagues to ADD some sort of relegation system again (maybe just for 1 team) and also get a few more teams in. Maybe the LPL overdid it with 17 but around 10-12 sounds good to me
They sorta cant if its franchised. Teams buy a guaranteed spot. Relegation means risk in losing said spot. Huge difference in budget/staff makes up the big differences imo.
They can't with franchise system, what they should do is add some kind of incentive for teams to rebuilt with newer players, so with that incentive they stop hiring a bad players with stage experience to not lose that bad and start hiring a new talent and see if they can work with him
That it is franchise, is such a joke for a competetive sport. With relegations u would give talent a way into the best league so we dont end up watching teams like clg to splits in a row. But its nice for the teams ofcurse they can Play ad bad as they want and still stay even though better teams could exist in academy or whatever the league is called under the main league. Like you do in football or any european sport.
@@clausjrgensen9981 When the LCS had relegations in the past, it was almost always the promoted teams that would be relegated within 1 or 2 splits because they lacked a solid infrastructure. Franchising let's orgs build up an infrastructure since they aren't at risk of being relegated. Last summer FlyQuest finished 9th and had a good chance of being relegated if they were still a thing. Now this last spring they were finalists and this split finished 3rd.
World's format: double round-robin and best of fives. LEC Summer format selection: winner of double round-robin goes to Worlds. Winner of best of fives goes to Worlds.
As a TSM by way of doublelift fan just making worlds is ok for this year Spica treatz and double are all technically additions I expect NA teams to make it out of hard groups at worlds like I expect TL to beat IG at MSI
The part with the Global LOL League like in Sport is also not true for Europe. In Europe not everyone watches Premiere League. In Germany, France, Spain etc. you watch the league from your own Country and maybe some games here and there from other Leagues.
I suspect they calculate viewership by averages. Therefore best-of series are bad for viewership, because people don't stick around to watch the bad teams play each other loads of times, and this drags down the average viewership. Would be interested to see the counter argument of how many extra viewers/better the really premium match-ups are.
I do like the current 1 game matches. I love being able to keep an eye on all the they all have their narratives. When switching to best of 3 I'll get tired of that. You can't compare it to Football leagues, they have a lot more teams. If LEC had 32 I would agree with Thorin, but not with this small amount of teams.
We had like "premier league" of league of legends in Europe in ERLs - It was LVP. Every player from ERL knew that most talents are playing in LVP. Then imports rules coming online and LVP is destroyed. So if in league of legends should be "premier league", there can't be imports rules.
If LEC should move to Bo3's, they also need to expand the days of broadcast. You can't have 5 Bo3's in one day. That would be insane. Especially on the broadcast crew! They need to change when they broadcast to get Bo3's. I would fully support such a change though. Because Bo3's would boost LEC so much!
If you play Bo3 you can have the same number of games played each day, but you change the way you score them. Instead of having team A earning 2 points for defeating team B and 2 points for defeating team C, you make it so team A gets 1 point if they lose Bo3 with team B or 3 if they beat team B on Bo3. So you keep the same amount of game but with less different teams playing each other
@@jorgemartinasis3413 Do you know how fucking long the broadcast would be? 5 Bo3's in one day would be an absolute killer on the broadcast crew. I am only talking about length of broadcast. Not format or anything. And 5 Bo3's in one day is simply just too much to demand of the casters and broadcast crew. More days to play out the Bo3's would make it better on the broadcast team as you could keep the time down to around 4-5 hours of broadcast with 2 bo3's pr day. And then do 5 days of broadcast, it should be fine.
@@WutangToft you dont have to show every game. You can just show the top 6 teams. Maybe let spring be BO1 and let let that decide wich 6 teams u will show every match of in summer split where u play bo3. Cant be that hard to make bo3 in a reasonble time span.
@@clausjrgensen9981 and what if your a fan of a team that doesn't make that... Imagen schalke making the miracle run and its not on broadcast because of spring.
@@clausjrgensen9981 The best way to deal with this is simulcasting. You choose a "main match" and jump to other ones when something relevant happens (aided by spectators and "on-call" shoutcasters). This allows having, for example, three games at the same time. Then the last two (three if 12 teams) pairs of BO3 can also be simulcasted. Also, I may be in the minority here but if BO3 goes like the lck with in week days I'll probably see less games than I do now. Now I see 10 games a week, and it's already a big commitment. With so many games, I would watch no more than 2 BO3 a week, and highlights or summaries of the others.
1 league is a bad idea since there will always 2-4 teams dominating, i would rather have the worlds format be bigger like the champions league, so you would have the group stages matches while the leagues are still going. Also the clash of styles form the different regions would be pretty much gone.
One thing about BO3s in the West that I don't see brought up enough is competitiveness. Going into a BO3 against a Korean or Chinese team as a Western team is made more difficult--in addition to the skill differential--by the fact that they are used to the format, meanwhile Westerners have to adapt to a new format. Someone should tell that LEC idiot that it'd be pretty hype to have a Western world champion.
Liverpool winning the Premier League was worth more than the Champions League to them only because they hadn't won it for so long. When it comes to teams like Juve or Bayern who win their domestic league every year, CL is way more valuable.

Bo1s are fine, that’s part of what makes the NFL exciting. There should be less playoff teams though to make the regular season matter more. Although I’m a bigger NBA fan, the format can get boring at times.
@@DaOtisElevator Yes it does. Theres no physical limitation for league. Theres a reason why NFL is bo1, champions league is bo2, and nba/mlb/nhl r bo7. NFL would like to have more games. They just negotiated for a 17th game of the season.
First time I 100% disagree with Monte. The Premier League is not the unanimously the best league in the world, of the last 20 Champions Leagues (equivalent to Worlds, as Thoorin said) only 4 times has been won by a team in the Premier League. This year in the semifinals there is not a single team from the Premier League. And the beauty of the Champions League is to see the best teams of every region face each other. That beauty I think would be lost if those teams were facing each other time and time again in the regular season, the same way the national cups are inconsequential for the top soccer teams and they use them to play their backup and academy players.
- I think this worlds we'll have 1. LPL 2. LCK 3. LEC in results. - I remember in Starcraft 2 was full of korean players even in european cups. Latest on semifinals there were only koreans left in each tournament which ultimately made me stop watching it (together with the stale meta at that time) so I hate the idea of a LoL Champions League instead of worlds. I do want to see the regions competing with each other. Let cultures and nationalities/regions clash against each other compared to just koreans from all other the place fighting against each other. - Isn't the NFL trying to reduce the overall time of 1 game? If I remember correctly Goddell changed the current system towards less ad breaks and one of the reasons was its not up to date to spent 3 hours on 1 game but that might have been because you have a 1 hour game taking 3 hours to be played.
I am a FNC fan and only watch FNC games so they lose my viewing time since i then ignore the other 4 games, if there was best of threes they would have my time longer.
For NA 8 teams making playoffs is 100% the best. In other regions the EU system is the best. LPL playoffs is pretty bad but LCK is the worst, how does this exist? LCK is terrible playoffs wise. Everyone should copy LEC but at least LCS has the 2nd best overall.
Thorin's analysis is the most pulled-out-the-ass analysis. The guest was really underwhelming - at least get inero for actual game insight rather than the guy who is going to bring up 2011-2012 TSM as a winner bracket run reference for 2020 TSM.
If you want a 'Champions' League, just watch LPL. They're close to having 20 teams anyway and dwarf any other region in terms of talent. Also most entertaining gameplay and the English cast is fantastic.
Holy shit! Wtf is Monte saying? A big pro league with all the "good" teams? How should that even work? There are so many different regions and it will never work, first of all, judging from this season, there should be like 8 Chinese teams, 4 Korean, 4 EU and like 4 NA just to round up to 20 but this is terrible because the Chinese would just smash everyone and all the NA would be dead last. Second, all the "development leagues" would absolutely fuckin not help the amateur scene, just look at eu, the ERLs are full of talent, but they definitely are not amateur leagues and I don't even need to mention Korea, plus the viewership on these leagues would be absolutely killed because of the "premier league". Third all the emerging regions would be relegated to their fans and couldn't possibly get to the "premier league" and as you said worlds would be 2nd tier, so who cares if they are competing there. Fourth, from a fan perspective I don't know how I would be able to follow all the games with the same interest, plus I was thinking how I got in esports and it was all because G2 were at MSI finals and I liked the idea of an EU team being the pride of our region, but with this format you are describing, I don't know if teams will keep their integrity as an EU only team or even partially EU. I've been disappointed in many of your episodes lately, I think they are full of questionable takes and if you keep saying shit like this up from your ass, I'll just stop watching because it's starting to be painful to listen to shit like in the middle of the interview with the guest which I was interested in.
Think it makes sense considering you're valuing the summer season more. Plus the bottom 2 teams of the split have a chance of going to Worlds still. If the LEC had it, especially considering how close it's been all year you wouldn't really argue it. This split for the LCS, yes it's too much agreed. But moving forward it's a good idea
@@TRevelationP NA never had more than 4-5 decent teams. Thinking that this will change in the future is naive. NA should stick to 6-Team Playoffs or extend to 12 Teams league and stay at 8 Team playoff system.

I don't understand why Bjerg is a candidate for MVP. He doesn't do "int plays" because he plays so passive. But Bjerg is still there after doing nothing with zoe in game vs TL.
Lol the fact you claim that Bjergsen is passive already is flawed. Last split he was the most proactive mid laner in terms of moving out of Lane to assist the side lanes statistically. His Zoe game aside, he's been one of, if not the most proactive midlaner this split. Passivity is reserved for players like Jensen.

Im pretty sure the most serious fans just watch LPL/LCK and maybe LEC Marquee matches, Because Bo1's are whack.
God he sounds like sodapoppin so badly
I am a FNC fan and only watch FNC games so they lose my viewing time since i then ignore the other 4 games, if there was best of threes they would have my time longer.
For NA 8 teams making playoffs is 100% the best. In other regions the EU system is the best. LPL playoffs is pretty bad but LCK is the worst, how does this exist? LCK is terrible playoffs wise. Everyone should copy LEC but at least LCS has the 2nd best overall.
1:00:00 HAHAHAHAHAHA
Thorin's analysis is the most pulled-out-the-ass analysis. The guest was really underwhelming - at least get inero for actual game insight rather than the guy who is going to bring up 2011-2012 TSM as a winner bracket run reference for 2020 TSM.
If you want a 'Champions' League, just watch LPL. They're close to having 20 teams anyway and dwarf any other region in terms of talent. Also most entertaining gameplay and the English cast is fantastic.
I'd love to see the best western + Korean teams just inserted into LPL.
@@70chaoswalking07 No thx if anyone happens to say something wrong then goodbye to their organs.
Anyone else think we need a hashtag to get Riot on the Bo3 mindset? #Bo3beatBo1 #3beats1 #lolbo3 #qualitynotvolatility
Pretty obnoxious guest
fnatic and benefitting from dodgy tiebreaker rules, name a better duo
80% of LCS teams make the playoffs, that is absolutely ridiculous. The restrictions to make playoffs definitely need to be tightened up.
I prefer bo1 I get to see more games
You mean more teams right?
@@CrimsonSnow22 yeah
Too many playoff teams? 8 god damn teams go to playoffs out of 10. What a joke.
NA should stick to 6-Team Playoffs or extend to 12 Teams league and stay at 8 Team playoff system.
monte and making dumb statments without explaining em
g2 wouldnt make the comeback they made in spring in offline
ok why
there is a momentum you carry into the mindset of stage that is not the same when you play online. You have a more relaxed environment, it seems pretty much like you are playing scrims rather than on stage, with that on mind, if your team was struggling on stage switching to playing from home is a great boost for the team doing bad and a great downgrade for the teams with momentum on stage
@@jorgemartinasis3413 too many narratives too little analysis g2 after that loss simply woke up realized caps is too aggresive and needed to be played around so they shifted their playstyle to full on botside and destroyed the both fnc and mad hell if it was on stage mad wouldnt even win that bo5 since they'd be more likely to choke that game 5 he is simply wrong and should stop talking about gameplay specific topics
I bet Thorin talks over women 24/7
Wasn't a big fan of the guest
Very underwhelming guest. He doesn't seem to have any game knowledge or much to offer
I don't understand why Bjerg is a candidate for MVP. He doesn't do "int plays" because he plays so passive. He just do plays when he is unkillable with yummi (Watch his LB without Yummi in other games). Why they discount Jensen for one game that he didn't lose (and honestly he didn't play it entirely bad and obviusly he played limit testing because they played against CLG). But Bjerg is still there after doing nothing with zoe in game vs TL.
mate hes been carrying tsm games 1v9, mvp award goes to most valuable. Probably wont win but a top candidate for sure
He is always seen as a top player- extremely overrated..can’t wait if he should qualify for worlds when analysts put him in their top 20 again
He's in contention for MVP because TSM would be 8th-10th place without him.
@@ops2932 I'm not saying he is a bad player. But they can't leave Jensen out of the conversation. i mean, you see the performance he's putting?, i don't thing Bjerg is playing better than Jensen.
