- Gennady Daskal is no stranger to blood and guts. Until last month, the 27-year-old was working in an abattoir in central Ukraine, killing pigs and cows for a living. Now, after being conscripted, he is preparing to enter a very different kind of slaughterhouse. As part of a rookie infantry assault unit, he is being trained up for the Donbas frontline - the gruelling combat zone that many nickname the “meatgrinder”.

“I got my draft papers, so here I am,” he told The Telegraph, as he practised shooting rifles and grenade launchers at a range in a Donbas clay-pit. “Of course I’m worried, because I know many guys who’ve died already - maybe ten or 20. But what can you do?”
Like other conscripts in the 22nd Mechanised Brigade, Mr Daskal tries to channel his inner-warrior. His callsign is Pitbull, and he flashes a cheery, gold-toothed grin. But asked about his wife and children back home, and suddenly he chokes with emotion. “Of course she’s worried,” he says, tears forming. “And the kids want me to come back as soon as possible.”

That is NOT a "breakdown". In a combat situation, a mental breakdown is 1000x as bad as this, total loss of control. That is a normal human response to a terribly difficult situation and the guy held it together and regained his compsure quickly. This guy didnt volunteer for this and was just a civilian a week ago, hes doing his best with the hand he got dealt. Anyone would miss their family too in this situation, Disrespectful reporting from the telegraph, do better.

no European or American soldier has the slightest idea of what the Ukrainians are going through, they have been accustomed since the Second World War (the Americans from the First) to fighting in first class; planes, helicopters, missile… etc. etc. against infantry armed with some AK 47 or RPG! in place of these guys they would tremble in the same way or very probably much worse, have respect for the blood of others which is shed for us too!!
The USA was constantly at war for 30 years. Our troops have spent more time in combat than any Ukrainian has.
Ukrainians are not special. They are not fast learners. They are normal people. In this case, poorly trained conscripts lead by inept officers fighting a much larger army of poorly trained conscripts led by inept officers.

There are enough videos of volunteer women on the frontlines in the trenches and enough were picking up weapons during the battle for Kyiv .
They are not conscripted yet and its good having people to be in factories so Ukraine can still function as a country.

Following the 24 February 2022 invasion, the Ukrainian government enforced a mobilization order on men aged between 18 and 60 to be available for conscription as combatants.

@@zevpizda Nato were aware that moving into Ukraine would mean war. US/Nato overthrew the democratic elected Ukrainian government in 2014 and a civil war started in Eastern Ukraine. Russia moved in to protect the ethnic Russians in Donbass.

That's what happens when imperialists in the West fight a proxy war using the lives of people they value less than the lives of their own soldiers. Imagine how many lives and infrastructure would have been saved if Ukraine had just decided to remain neutral and focus on improving the lives of their people. Now, they are stuck in a war with a military power and with no end in sight because no side wants to appear weak. Sadly, it seems the darkest days in this war are yet to come. Leaving your family and loved ones to go and almost certainly die in a war that could and should have been avoided is the worst feeling any of those conscripts could get. We live in a world that has gone mad.

@@TheBoobanodd, I've seen hundreds of videos with under 25 in the last two years. They are volunteers though, it's still over 25 for mandatory draft. Conscription under 25 isn't forced to combat duty

Seeing a US Senator (in full uniform!) threw me for a bit; I had to go look up why he is there. He's there of his own accord; he isn't active duty obviously but there to "drum up support" basically. While he is within regs as to wearing the uniform, I can certainly see why a Russian drone flying past and seeing him would assume "NATO troops are in Ukraine". If he's there, this "training session" was 100% staged. No way in hell a US Senator would be in Iskander range....my guess is they aren't even in Ukraine.
He's a state senator. A former member of one of the two houses in the Nebraska legislature. He's probably an actual instructor in Ukraine, working for the Ukrainian army.

The reality is that if there is a lot of dude like that in the Ukrainian ranks the will totally ineffective because they don’t want to fight and at the first sign of danger the'll run away or surrender to the Russians. I don't blame him on the contrary I feel sorry for him. The man just wants to be there to raise his son.
