I will forever be moved by Mary and your love for her. What a wonderful opportunity you have to know her not only as your mother but the woman she is outside of that. It's a rare gift.
I love her accurate recording of the neighbourhood. Her paintings have way more energy and life than any photographs could portray. She IS a true artist: she has eyes to see what others do not.
I didn’t start painting until I was 73 (I’m 78 now) and it has given me so much joy! Your Mum is a love and an inspiration. My fave is the one with the bicycle leaning against the wrought fence, though picking is difficult because I love them all! I hope her paintings have been exhibited so others can see them hanging in a gallery.
This film is a masterpiece. Your narrative is perfect, not too much, no overbearing background music, and her spirit shines through your work. Thank you so much!
Working class, a woman, a mother, then later her disability; restricted her art when she should have been a household name. Thank you for a beautiful film that defends your mother's legacy.
I love her art. It's mesmerizing to just sit and look at a painting and take your time and notice the expertise that's on display with her color and texture and love for her subjects. She's adorable.. what a sweet face.
I am so fascinated by this apparently simple, ordinary woman but endowed with such a talent, senitivity and power of perceiving ,rendering and feeling reality to the minutest detail . It is amazing and I thank her son for what he is doing to present her to us !
Beautiful paintings about life. She created time capsules of a certain era that will hold onto these moments of time forever. We can see everyday life being lived thru her wonderful, artistic eyes. Like a camera clicking away - taking snapshots and snippets of the world around her. Really lovely to see.
Masterpiece - the paintings and the story. I can't help thinking that Mary's paintings of brick buildings would make very satisfying jigsaw puzzles. All those colours!
What a story, I’m 80 and a full time artist, she’s a marvel and most of all followed her own path, her paintings are stunning even on a film, must be completely stand still and wonder in person.
I have found this film to be utterly captivating, and so evocative of how life really plays out. You have shown your Mum, being the heroine of the saga, as herself; pragmatic, wry, full of humour and honesty. I've seen one of your earlier films documenting your Mum's annual endeavour to have a paintingi n the RA yearly exhibition, which I also loved. And I love your Mum's paintings. Though she clearly refused to consider them high art - many of them reveal, in my view, a deep and subtle artistic pognancy in what she chose to include alongside and amidst the many, many multitudes of bricks she painted. The fact that she painted what inspired her and refused to acquiesce to more traditional subjects is the hallmark of an artist. Anyway, thank you for your film. Very moving. And if your mum is still with you, please tell her how much I appreciate her paintings - they really are a legacy ! Cheers, Marlowe (from Canada....though born in WIllesden Green, NW2 !)
I was touched so much by this film. Your mother’s lovey character and her passion to paint are all so evocative. It is interesting that she kept saying she is an amateur although she is far more than that, and indeed an excellent artist. She perhaps didn’t need anyone's accreditation ; she painted because her inner and passion lead her to paint. She has inspired me to continue painting and not to give up. Thank you very much for sharing her life and work.
She always considered herself an amateur because she never went to art school so was never "trained" as she would say. I told her she didn't need any training. I went to art school myself and didn't learn a thing! Thank you for watching.
Loved watching this beautiful talented artist, such a warm bright character! She is lucky to have a son who dearly loved her and keeps her memory alive !
Well done. I cried when she left her home. Reminds me of my mom, who is so very attached to her home that she should sell and get a smaller place and live more comfortable, financially.
I was so moved by this story, your mum, your relationship as a son and most of all her work. I was hoping to read in the comments somewhere that you were going to do a book of her absolutely stunning paintings. It would be an inspiration for generations to come. Realism comes and goes- and right now there are a lot of young (and older) painters aspiring to do something even a fraction as lovely as your mum’s work. Please consider doing a book of her paintings, drawings and her life story. I guarantee- people would buy it. Especially now with all the technology available and even financial crowdsourcing to get it going. I am going to check back and hopefully see that dream come true!
Yes, I want to make a book of all her paintings. Right now there are excellent prints of several of her paintings on the website I created for her at marycanehoneysett.com. Stay tuned!
What a beautiful Mother you had and still do in your heart. The way she painted all those buildings was remarkable! Her attitude toward her life was so calm and graceful! Bless her!
As a 76 year old woman that has put art before all else all my life, I cried watching this wonderful tribute to your mother. I know there is far less time in front of me than behind me, and I continue to create as much as possible. However, I plan to write if I cannot hold a brush. If I can't type, I'll speak my stories and experiences. It's absolutely necessary to keep creating. It is breathing to an artist. She was an intrepid and courageous woman. Blessings to her.
Wow. Just wow. I have just started supporting a friend who recently had a stroke. She has aphasia so her challenge is speech. Like Mary’s ability to paint, my friend’s strength was her words we meet together to talk, and coincidently, paint.
@ it’s such a privilege really. She approached me to see if I could support her. She has some funding to pay me too! Your mum’s talent is truly extraordinary. I am in awe of her work. PS Brushstroke is a brilliant title for your film!
As a woman that loves to paint buildings; I enjoyed this very much. She created fabulous paintings and she is so good that I thought some of them were photographs. Well, better that photographs because the energy and spirit of everyone who built, lived or worked in them. Very inspiring. Love this artist!
So moved by this extraordinary woman, her beautiful paintings, the love of her son, and the quality of this film, including the music. Thank you for putting it out there.
"Brushstroke" is a miracle of care. Mary herself is a work of art, too. And the art she made touches deeply & sincerely. Thank you so much, Tony Cane-Honeysett.
She was far from an amateur! She painted the London I remember, for which I am grateful. She had some very excellent teaching even if she thought it was merely "Teachers Training College". A lot of people try to get their paintings into the RA, I suspect it isn't worth the effort. I had the full art school training but she is a far better painter than I am! Alfred Munnings was blind in one eye. I have cataracts so I know what she says about one eyed slopes! I am grateful for her advice about using a grid...that makes all sorts of sense. Thank you to you and your Mother for a wealth of interest and information! Your movie is a great homage, not only to her, but lots of other artists who are unrecognised.
What a beautiful woman 😍. I suffered an injury in 2023, had three spine surgeries after being diagnosed with Cauda Equina Syndrome. My life has changed so much, especially physically. Watching this, I could really relate to what she's going through. I'm thankful for the health I do have and this lovely woman has inspired me to keep trying!!
I love her. What an amazing attitude she had. She knew what she could and couldn't do and lived with a compromise. Her art is precise but with a homespun look. I see she passed in 2016 , her prints can still be purchased. Thank you for sharing s personal look into your moms life.
What an amazing capture of a humble and wonderful woman who happened to have incredible talent. Truly stunning were her paintings. Strangely, I have tried and dropped painting, but seeing her work and passion nudges me to go back to it. Seeing her beautiful, detailed brick paintings tugs at my heart and reminds me of a drawing I did of an old stone building when I was trying to get the courage to try anything artistic again, and so, perhaps I shall try again. You did an incredible job of telling her story and I'm sure she was so very proud of you. In addition to showcasing her talent it was also revealed what kind of a woman she was...resilient, realistic with a display of positivity without being overly cheery as when she expressed that it was a good thing that the cat died when it did as he was old and there would've been no one to look after it, or to her saying that she must not look backward but forward. Thank you for sharing her with us!
Absolutely wonderful. The paintings have an almost photographic quality. Love the minute details and use of color. The subject matter is so interesting.
I needed this as I process the loss of our ancestral home (sold this year) - and of course, of my Mom who also had several strokes and complications from them. Like Mary, my Mom lived a life so true to herself (she had purple hair in the late 80's!). Thank you from the depth of my heart.
Thank you for this film of your mum. It was filled with love. Personally relevant to me at 75, shaky hands, bad knee and back and a love to draw and create. I loved your portrait!
What a wonderful inspiring woman. I think she benefitted greatly by NOT going to art college. They don't even teach the students to draw these days. Her paintings are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing story of courage and determination. I'm 75 and need to adopt Mary's resilience.
Thank you for sharing your mother, think it would be great to have a exhibition of her work in london as she was very talented and I would describe her work as a social historian artist.. 😊
I feel so inspired by this Lady. What a privilege to glimpse the essence of her Wisdom, insight and heart. What a privilege to see this film, a modern day philosopher speaking through art. The beautiful face and nature of her being. Amazing.
What a beautiful story. Your mother was so talented, but you knew that. I'm amazed at her dedication to painting. It's wonderful you helped her remain independent for so long. She inspires me to paint more.
Oh this should have come with a warning ‘tissues needed’ 😢 What a wonderful talented modest lady. I love old buildings too so I get her love of them. I grew up in an old Victorian house so my love of all things old started at an early age. Now I’m going to research her and her artwork😉Bless her and you for filming this ❤️Thank you 🙏
Makes me think of the phrase, “gave a beginner’s mind”. While I completely understand the frustration of what/all she lost. She taught herself once, she cd teach herself again. It’s that relentless grip on what was that blinds us all to what could be. Beautiful beautiful film. Thank you.
well. this broke my heart. As an aging woman painter I am so moved by this story. How amazing that you had the good sense to film this. I hope it is seen wide and far. I thank the powers that be who led me here. Many congratulations on such a loving, sensitive and thought provoking on so many levels film. Your mother's work is just wonderful.
Love your Mom. The luckiest are those who want to do something and can do something. I believe elders should be looked after better, it’s expensive but maybe they would do better in care.
❤An inspiring story of love and determination between a son and a mother artist. I wish I had a son who could help me. Wonderful story! I feel inspires by this story.😊
Wow!!! The real deal!!! I hope she has a book on Vermeer. What a fantastic story of a genuine artist that has no pretentiousness and just loves her very well done historical buildings of bricks. Thank you so much for this documentary. It’s a gem!
The brickwork, oh my, amazing, her work is just so fantastic, so talented, and the atmosphere/feelng as well as technique. A beautiful and well deserved tribute. I have poor binocular vision so I totally relate to the 'wonky' grid required.
My heart is truly heavy after watching this truly precious legacy of Mary! I believe she is a National Treasure for her paintings are beyond remarkable. A true architectural historian with a passion for unique brick structures. She maintained a great sense of humor throughout her life. 💕🕊🎨
Welch ein Geschenk haben Sie mir mit Ihrem Film über Ihre wunderbare Mutter und deren Leben und Malerei gemacht. Ich danke Ihnen! Angelika, 73 Jahre, aus Brandenburg in Deutschland.
Just beautiful, thank you for sharing your mum's story. A wonderful legacy she has left with all her beautiful paintings. So emotional to watch. Thankyou❤
What a marvellous film to make and showing your love and admiration for your mother. She is so English determined and eccentric in a typically English way. Makes me homesick.
What a FABULOUS film! I’m a 74 year old artist and I enjoyed this immensely, and your mother has inspired me to start painting again. I stopped for awhile due to health issues. Thanks for sharing. What a beautiful person. Who ever said a self-taught artist can’t paint masterpieces. May God bless you both this new year❤❤❤I love painting architecture as well…
Her life is a masterpiece of humanity in itself. I lived in London (SW) from 1983 until 2001 and it was so touching to recognise so many places and relieve the atmosphere which she captured so beautifully.
This is such a beautiful story! She was a perfect painter love all her works. Thanks for sharing your mothers story. So so special . She looked like a good mommy love this story love her works.❤❤
Thankyou Tony for your filming of your Mum's journey. Your kind encouragement and support to get her to try painting again. She had such a determined spirit, sense of humour and inherant Hope within her throughout all the adversity and challenges she faced. What a role model and humble genius she was. Your beautiful capturing of her life story in film and gentle music is wonderful Thankyou.
What a remarkable person! Her architectural paintings reminds me of a school friend who turned to pen and ink drawings of old structures in our home state of West Virginia. Such blessings, these artists.
I am a visually impaired artist, and I have had to learn to do things differently than I used to. The fact that she started out visually impaired, and it was hardly stopping her is extraordinary. I was fascinated by her description and attention to detail of the bricks individually. I’m sure the experience of losing what she had become so used to doing was very devastating. I imagined her doing large paintings of individual bricks so they wouldn’t have to be so detailed and straight… Because she had endless appreciation for their individuality and color. You are a wonderful son❤️🕊️
@@TonyCane-Honeysett i’m sorry, vision loss is very hard to deal with especially if it affects your independence. I hope you’re able to get the right resources and adaptation skills. I recently started a RUclips channel so that I could push myself to explore art in a different and meaningful way because I never know when it will be my last time. Blessings to you happy holidays.
A remarkably talented Painter. I love her love of bricks and buildings. Thank you for sharing her story; she is truly inspirational.
Very touching documentary. She’s a real artist.

This is so good. I love how she calls herself an amateur. Humble painter. Her work is stunning.
I totally agree!
What a lovely lady, very talented and yet so humble about her works of art. She symbolises true authentic talent for me.

What a marvellous film to make and showing your love and admiration for your mother. She is so English determined and eccentric in a typically English way. Makes me homesick.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
May God bless you both this new year❤❤❤I love painting architecture as well…
Thank you so much. I'm so glad the film has inspired you to paint again!
I love her artwork! Inspiring story
What a jaw dropping amazing artist. You look at many of her picture's and think they are real photograghs. The attention to detail. Unbelievable ❤
Her life is a masterpiece of humanity in itself. I lived in London (SW) from 1983 until 2001 and it was so touching to recognise so many places and relieve the atmosphere which she captured so beautifully.
Yes so many of those buildings are now gone in Fulham. Such a shame.
@@TonyCane-Honeysett Yes, those pockets of beauty are now scarce.
BRAVO to your Mother!

What an inspirational film about an extraordinary woman. Thank you for sharing this intimate biography. Her paintings are so beautiful!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Pleased you watched and enjoyed it!
Oh this wonderful music. I want to hear the recordings of this artist in total.
Delighted you enjoyed my music!
Such a heart felt documentary; a lovely tribute to say the least.
What a remarkable person! Her architectural paintings reminds me of a school friend who turned to pen and ink drawings of old structures in our home state of West Virginia. Such blessings, these artists.
A wonderful tribute. Hope this goes after an award, it deserves it.
Thank you!
Thank you. I am also astonished she could paint with such detail as I have inherited the same eye condition and regularly crash into furniture!
Such a gifted artist and a lovely lady. May her memory be a blessing. ❤
Such a beautiful film, it touched all my emotions. The filmmaker has done a superb job in capturing the life and work of such a gifted artist.
