How Formula 1 Wheel Guns Work & Why Not Cordless?

Today we're in Japan because we're in the pursuit of knowledge, not because there's a race and good food here to enjoy, that's coincidental. Why does F1 continue to use the Dino Paoli Hurricane 2 while lower formulas and Formula E have switched to cordless wheel guns? Today we take a look at a Formula 2 wheel gun and inside how an F1 wheel gun works to try and explain why some of those reasons might be and why it might go away some day. - Авто/Мото
To clarify, the cut away gun was not an F1 Hurricane 2, we've not had access to one yet nor 400psi on hand to push these tools to thier max. So any numbers from our side would be not very representative of the real gap, this episode was about learning how they work which we were very happy to be able to do.
But what would our standard air tools do at 400psi????
The adrenaline on those pit guys has to be insane
If you have F1 TV a few years back in Monaco Williams had hear rate monitors on the drivers, engineers and pit crew and made like a 10 minute video showing everyone’s heart rates throughout the race
“The heart rate of a race crew” is the name if you’re interested!
I get to help with pitstops on GTP cars within imsa as part of my job, and I can say that, at least for teams that train the crews properly, there's not a huge amount of adrenaline on a normal pitstop. If you train good enough, the race stops feel just like the practice stops, and not really anything special. If there is adrenaline, it's only during a really close battle for the lead where a half second faster on the pitstop is going to help you.
Love the giant battery on the tiny torque tool! @3:12

Never thought a vacation to Japan to watch a race would be benefit of starting a RUclips channel.
*That's why some people's job title is called "Creative". Mostly found in the Advertising game, but...*
Doesn't exactly make it free, but it's good to once a year have a break from the usual and have a bro bonding bash
@@TorqueTestChannel I never said Free. I know vacations are expensive. Just going to Japan vs staying in country.
It is a pretty long flight and jet lag, really awesome though, the info on the F1 stuff pretty interesting, the money they spend on those teams, seems, a bit excessive.
@@TorqueTestChannel for science
This video was more entertaining to watch than the entire 2023 F1 season.
I heard that formula E is a lot more dynamic and interesting now, a lot of overtaking etc
UGH! Maybe one day we'll see the graph of that F1 test. Awesome video.
3:35: Einhell is a cheap hardware store brand. You won't see any broken records if you test them.
Yeah I buy that to frankenstein other stuff out of it, or to use it in salt water environment, where I don't mind buying a new tool every few months. cheap as dirt not well balanced, but they work well enough
They‘ve been making some better brushless tools as of late, don‘t be too quick to dismiss them.
Yes, same crap as extol or parkside. Although price is adequate
I know a guy who bought their automatic lawnmower. Lets just say it's been ein hell to get it to work properly.
Einhell is very popular here in Germany, cheap and reliable but absolutely nothing record breaking. It's considered a DIY/budget brand and has a very non-american lineup so very short in terms of impact wrenches and drivers but tons of garden stuff.
The hardware store up the road from my house sells the einhell tools and I was quick to jump on them to try them. Especially for the price they have here in Canada. I got a 1/2” impact, hammer drill, 1/4” driver, grinder, jig saw, polisher and 6 batteries for less than $300. The only downside is the impact isn’t good for much but motorcycles because it wouldn’t take off lights torqued to 75 ft/lb. Haven’t had a problem with anything else though
3:14 lmao this will never get old 😂

4:42 The largest battery you can fly with on an airplane, without an exception from the airline, is 100Wh. That's why you see the 5 Ah versions.
They don't seem to fly this stuff on commercial flights there though.
@@TorqueTestChannel My understanding is that everything car or pit related gets flown place to place. It's only the really big and bulky stuff that gets container shipped. They have multiple sets of that equipment (4 or 5) to meet their international race schedule.
Dewalt 15ah batteries taking a lonely truck to each track then :p
F1 charters commercial cargo and there you don't have limits, even sometimes when flown on passenger planes limits don't apply or are higher. In regular baggage you have the limits mentioned.
I'm sure F1 would get those exceptions
I love that you guys have become big enough to get inroads, allowing you to do "on the down low" sort of stuff like that! Icing on the cake being that you were even allowed to destroy part of it!! 🤯 _(even despite the a gentleman's agreement, or even NDA, to not divulge numbers)_
_BUT ALSO_ that teams are willing to meet up to test the guns... That's just heartwarmingly awesome! 🥹
Way to go, TTC! 🤘
And, great video. Glad you guys got to do this, just from a "cool vacation" standpoint, as it was well earned.
Kennedy is a machinist toolbox and tool manufacturer if i remember correctly. I remember seeing many Machinists at work with Kennedy tool boxes
They do make machinist toolboxes, felt lined drawers and a even a specially sized drawer specifically for a machinist's handbook, but they also make regular old toolboxes too.
Wow ttc and f1 crossover episode… would’ve never expected this but so glad it happened. Enjoy the race!
Nice sneaky footage of Supercars legend Jamie Whincup there at 2:38 and 4:57.
Thank-you for a very informative presentation with tools we rarely have access to.
Agree!
I really enjoyed the vid! I hope there's more stuff like this in the future.
thanks for the video, enjoy the race!
Another great video, thank you
Einhell is also branded Ozito PXC here in Australia/New Zealand. They're great tools for the price.
Once in a while I get deja vu for the Garage54 channel narrator.
F1 being carbon neutral is the BIGGEST MEME ever 😂 it will NEVER be carbon neutral 😆
Especially with all that fiber being used
Its a financial lie. Nothing more and nothing to it apart from conditioning us to accept change.
@@Eric-dr5bj and all the travel required, planes are not going "carbon neutral" anytime soon 🤣 and they need ALOT of them
>Carbon neutral
>Sends drivers in separate helicopters for a couple mile trip
Methinks you are quite confused as to what meme means.😂
Awesome! That looks like a fun trip. That's one high dollar impact pew pew! I still can't get over the TPMS sensors in the tires. I never would have guessed that they use those sensors at that speed.
Would love to see some einhell tool tests - sunjoe had them on deep clearance when they stopped selling them a few years ago so i got a variety of brushless tools cheap
i think teams use some interesting solutions to torque the wheelnuts on the grid, could you give us some insight onto that? great video by the way, you nailed it!
I love my set of Bondhus T-handles. Had a metric set for years I bought at my local electronics components store. The solid metal handle rather than just an allen key with a plastic covering is a massive improvement. Now I need an SAE set and a Torx set as well. Maybe I will try the Kennedy ones next.
Definitely can't blame you for making a business trip out of it lol, that sounds so fun. I have a future video idea, rotary tools - both battery and corded. I needed to buy another dremel but wasn't going to use it much so wanted to save some money. I was about to get a cordless model but worried it wouldn't have the same RPM and power as a corded dremel. I ended up getting a corded knockoff for $30 that I hope will do the business. Would be interesting to see if the brand-name dremel is worth the money too.
Man I had serious withdrawals yesterday when the video just did. not. come. out. It was so bad I resorted to searching the back catalog for anything I hadn't watched. 🎉🎉🎉happy video day🎉🎉🎉
Same here... Thing is that several of my subs didn't put out videos yesterday.
Maybe it was a Yt screw up
Ditto!!!! Glad to see an episode as not much info on the net as to why none yesterday. Thank you TTC!!!
If you got a case of the shakes because a YT video was a day late, you're fucked up.
Great video!!!
Cool content! Enjoy your science field trip!
THIS IS AN AWESOME VIDEO!!!
video was super cool, thanks!
Great video, should do this in some other industries, like mining, oil etc
I love this channel... were closer each day to seeing that F1 Paoli... 🤤
when i walked through the nascar garages at daytona it’s interesting to see mostly all dewalt except i could see some milwaukee impact wrenches, including the dewalt sponsored team
except the 8 team uses bosch lol
the penske cars use snap on
I went to the Suzuka GP last year in Sept it was amazing. Wish I had gotten paddock club passes tho!
Interesting timing - just a few days ago a tried to search your channel to see if you ever reviewed any of the Dino Paoli impact tools. Would be really cool to see you do some tests on some of their regular impact wrenches like the DP 1800 plus. I have no reason to be interested in them aside from the fact they make the motorsport wheel guns used in the top race organizations, F1, nascar, indy. I wonder if that same quality and performance carries over into their more realistic/useable line of tools for regular mechanics, there is very very little info about them online though.
You sound like a legitimate fellow F1 fan. I really enjoyed this episode.
Ozito and Einhell Power X-Change are the same, Find PXC at Bunnings in Australia. Be great if you could import a few and test them for your Aussie viewers.
Very cool. Always wondered what they use in those secret pits.
Yes, please review some Einhell.
If you want to source some Einhell tools you might wanna check for the Ozito Brand. It's the exactly same tools and batteries, just branded differently for the international market, mostly UK and AUS.
It's a DIY brand, though.
Another comment said he bought Einhell brand up in Canada, in case Ozito ends up being tough to source.
(although, he said the impact wasn't even capable of removing 75ft/lb headlight screws 😒 lol)
@@DUKE_of_RAMBLE Yeah, impact stuff definitely isn't their strong side. They have a very small range of impact wrenches (three afaik) which also is really weird, with two going for up to 215 and 230nm respectively, and one going up to 400. They all look as if designed 15 years ago, despite being brushless.
Their range of garden tools is humongous, though.
Great video. I love that you are F1 fans too.
A lot of accurate research went into this video.
@2:32 In also use the DCF 601 the most for smaller (most) fastener installation the most! Just like real F1 mechanics! The clutch settings come in clutch! To prevent over tightening! The Dewalt cordless ratchets are both slower and to strong for some fasteners for install so I use the ratchets in small fasteners for removal where even the speed of small impact wrenches might damage soft aluminum threads. I use the ratchets for install on larger fasteners.
I was at the Susuka track, Japanese Grand Prix, in the late '80s watching Mick Doohan and Kevin Shwantz racing 2-stroke 500s!
Funny thing, I was able to walk right in the pits, being a "Westerner" in the far East got me into a lot of places, however, Mick Doohan's manager ended up getting us pit passes (so we'd be legal) that allowed us on the the track, which his pass didn't even allow! We didn't go out with the umbrella girls, but we could... Lol
One of the nights me and my friend (not stalking) ended-up in a bar/restaurant type place where Mick and Kevin were racing on arcade motorcycles against each other! Epic. Oh I wish I had a cell phone back then.
I was stationed in northern Japan, Misawa AB.
Love these videos too
That's why my preferred choice for auto type work and wheels is a small pneumatic 1/2" impact gun that turns 11,500rpm, weighs a mere 1.3kg and is under 6" in width. It's like the 2T YZ125 of impact wrenches, only offered up an honest 350-400ft lbs, but boy does it do it FAST. On standby is the MAC tools nano that's on their latest catalogue aka the Facom Nano NS1600 & the Astro Nano 3/8 when I want to just slow things down & relax. Now my high torque fuel big phat heavy full size Milwaukee M18, meh its got beans & powa's but it's big, heavy, clunky, slow, unbalanced and just down right not enjoyable to use with one hand or even two. But...all the cool kids love them, I'm just not cool I suppose 😢
I think it depends on what you already have in your shop. If you have a 25 gallon (100 liter?) air compressor or larger, then yeah... air tools all the way. I have a tiny air compressor since I rarely need it, as much as I need to do typical bolt removal, hole drilling, etc. And for the home gamer, electric has an advantage of portability that air powered does not.
I think it breaks down something like Pro/Semi-Pro users are gonna find air tools better. For the anything below that, electric is going to be good enough with a lower initial cost of entry. Just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth (essentially zero).
I would have all air tools but I can’t stand the noise. It’s deafening.
@@markm0000ear protection has the benefit you can ignore your buddies at work with the excuse of having your ears covered.
@@RGV2300 unless someone makes silent air tools I’m never using them.
Good stuff guys.
Suggestion for test. How about an extra long ratcheting wrench test? Thanks
I like how you're talking about F1 but use footage of Jamie Whincup (JDub) from the Redbull Ampol Racing Team from the Australian Supercar Series.
We used footage from a few different series that use the hurricane wheel gun
@@TorqueTestChannel I'm Australian so I support this inclusion, especially as they were Holden at that time.
I don't know where yall are located. But if you were to attend PRI in Indianapolis in December you can get your hands on paolis full line up. And could possibly talk them into testing.
Great video 🤌🤌
Great Video
Kennedy is a Cromwell Tools brand, they are normally rebranded premium tools.
It would be good to see how the hammer is pushed forward @12:31 with the pin. I dont know if there is an animation of it happening some where
Installation drivers are great for RC race cars. I don’t over drive screws in the plastics or mess up all the carbon fiber and titanium parts.
this was actually super interesting. clearly you should perform research at more F1 races.
2:35 is Makita DF030. This is an older tool from 10,8 V line.
Came for guns, learned a lot of new different information
Do we have a video about flip tire sockets yet?
Looking forward to see dcf860 tested. It's already for sale in Europe at roughly 320 bucks, which is a lot for an impact
Still will use my Facom tools and think I’m a very important race mechanic when I struggle doing the annual service on my car.
Really interesting!
Very interesting indeed. Well done investing in the travel for science 😉
All for "science" ;) life is so hard having to endure going to the Japanese F1 just for science.
Kennedy tools are a brand of Cromwell Tools, a distributor to companies in the UK rather than to the general public. If I remember correctly Kennedy is their "better" sub brand, with Senator being below. I bought quite a bit of Kennedy tooling off my rep when he had special offers on. The stuff is fine, but spanner wise I moved to Wera and pliers wise to Knipex, although I still have the Kennedy stuff. Never get rid of tools, right?
It's similar to tow pins hammer wúrth air impact wrench use it but i wonder what if we connect cordless impact wrench with that hammer i think it well be better that the original one
Dear can you give us a video and testing
I want one of those Mclaren dewalt sets since that’s what I use at work but I can’t find any sets for sale in the USA
They’re super expensive if you ever find any. It’s easier to dye the plastic housing black and put a sticker on the side.
2:35 is clearly Makita
1:39 all of the Snap-On kit reminds me of when Nascar use to pretend that they where using Craftsman in the garages 😂
enjoy the race!!
With all the tools and equipment all the teams have 5-6 sets of everything due to all the races and having to ship everything throughout the year.
That hammering mechanism is really cool. Is there any commercial tool out there with something similar?
Yes, but usually like 1-1/2 drive nearly 2 person sized impacts
Wow maybe you could fab us a 3/4 air gun with astro or something with the knowledge you are collecting 🤔👍
"Hopefully Max requires a new engine" 😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣 I see we have a non-Verstappen channel here and I can get behind that. That wreck almost off the starting line was crazy though
Eh, at this point even the Max fans want him to qualify P9 or something; this is just boring.
Love my makita 36v blower honestly
350 Lbs of pressure is nuts. I thought my 2141 Ingersol is pretty snotty at 165 psi. (Not all the time)
The Snappy micro lithium 3/8 cordless needs the switch replaced a month out of warranty, mine got rained on during a surprise thunderstorm, and started smoking in the tool bag in my car, while driving. I liked it, but it was fragile and expensive. Battery terminal tension problems as well.
AWESOME!!! the wheel guns of F1 don't get alot of attention. Have a GREAT time at the race and enjoy it!
I very much enjoyed the US Grand Prix at COTA in 2021. And the Japanese fans are awesome.
Never heared of snap on, strange that none of the big 3 bosch, makita and hilti are listed
This answers a question I've had for several years, they don't have a battery gun with enough speed and torque. As an OLD slot-car racer, I've rewound little DC motors, worked with armature reactance, and better brushes to achieve *much* more RPMs and torque than stock, which brings up the question of why aren't there custom electric wheel guns that can do this? My modified slot car motors used far more battery than a stock motor so I would expect that a custom wheel gun would too, and15,000 rpm is not that hard to achieve. So, whaddya think??
Pretty wild they let you cut that thing open. Very high tech.
It took me a day to change the center hub nut wheels by myself on my Radical RXC. F1 teams spend a fraction of a second to accomplish the same task.
Oh my, combining two things I love, this channel and F1 (Forza Ferrari)!
I got to know, what does a paddock pass run at Suzuka?
Does the snap on truck go to the track every week?
You never know when tools need replacing
Was the air f2 impact stronger than a Dcf961b? Hmm.
what would say an Astro pneumatic make if it was fed ~400psi of nitrogen... even if it didnt survive im sure there would be a scenario where a seized bolt was costing thousands dollary doos an hour holding up a an operation.... as someone who has been in the grimy parts of an oilfield i wouldnt doubt that there are ingersol rands that have been fed natural gas at well pressure when the trucks built in 150 psi vi-air system wasnt cutting it
This was very scientific and channel related.
Would love to see LIDL(Parkside) and ALDI(Ferrex) stuff tested, if you are reaching to the european market.
Einhell are the same as Ozito in Oceania
A nitrogen cylinder is cheap to lease or borrow (and cheap to buy used then exchange or have refilled, every gearhead should have one for purging HVAC etc or doing your own tires dirt cheap). Some nearby patron may loan them for a plug. A nearby welders supply would love the recognition. BTW soapy water sux compared to tire mounting compound which I wish I'd used decades ago. A tub it worth it for a DIYer and it doesn't promote corrosion. Soap isn't even close.
I was in Japan two weeks ago... Wish I could've stayed for the race.
Einhell is for people who dont want to spend much and have something that works but its not good from my experience. Kinda like walking in home depot (I am assuming they have some tools) and buying something.
I would like to compare the F1, Indy car and NASCAR impact drivers. I’ve seen Indy pit stops where the impact driver is thrown to the wall after installing the tires.
Yay, Science! Good for you, enjoy yourselves. Hope the rain makes it interesting, or something. Great driver's circuit, fantastic atmosphere, cool technology - I'm jealous.
I have an einhell 18v drill and I have a makita 18v lxt drill. The einhell is as good, but not better.
Best video ever
...oh the MATCO truck guys are going to put free advertisement for your Channel tomorrow!!
When you see how much energy is going through those tools, Im surprised broken wrists aren't more common.
So would a hammer doing a full rotation, hitting the anvil on that trihammer design, deliver a harder impact than a triple that hits 3 times a rotation?
Thr tri hammer also hits once per rotation but on three surfaces. And typically no
