BUT of those brands it includes Astro, who Torque of TTC is working. So, it's on the back burner for now until we figure out if you guys want to see that or not. It's up to you guys. Bring it, I got the Astro and its held up well. Eric O uses it so its gotta be decent 🤷♂️ Orion and Neico stuff from Amazon is garbage! I bought impact adapters like 3/8 to 1/2in set, and they both broke on a hand ratchet..soft crap steel. Won't ever buy those brands again! People giving the good reviews gotta be using hand tools on the press, or not doing 350, 450 or f550 ball joints. Probably all Mexican reviews that work a Firestone or general muffler that only see suv or 150s at the most

Believe it or not I've beaten the balls off a few ball joint presses in my day. I always had OTC and have been through several of them. Years ago I got a couple from Astro tools. They're extra deep one or extra long rather and then their regular set. I've hammered, heated, beated, sprayed, torqued, twisted, thrown and dropped them in the dirt snd they seem to hold up pretty well. I'd be interested to see where Astro holds up in the mix...

I always get the Astro or OTC brand tools if they're available... I'll pay for a better product and warranty every time....
I run the Maddox one myself, but it's rare I ever use it. 95% of the ball joints I end up doing are either built into the control arm or the bolt on style. Honestly, I end up using my angle grinder for the riveted type much more often than my press. Just the type of vehicles that are popular around here I guess.

Snap- on has the best ball joint press by far. The price for one is what sucks.
Matco came out with a new design, but it is not as versatile in small tight areas.

This had absolutely no issue removing or reinstalling the lug nuts and it took off the axle nut without any struggle. Sounds like it's got some muscle to it. Time will tell
So does my 1/4 craftsman usa impact !!!!! Well with a small struggle.
The big thing with this style press is getting it set up in a straight line. Get just a bit off angle and now the force required climbs rapidly due to the angular pressures on the parts. That and the folks who miss the retaining ring, or that it's a threaded part not a press in.

With the old Pittsburgh kit from Horror Fright the cups/adapters were so soft they would start to bend and crumple on the first turn so it didn't really matter how much of a straight line you had it in the C-frame was soon all crooked & done for. Likewise, if their new Maddox one doesn't come with higher quality adapters it really won't matter that the C-frame is stronger than their last model , but unfortunately this testing didn't take that into account.
@@TJK0ng lol one of my Pittsburgh adapters has an old axle nut forever cold welded into it. Thought I was making progress but the nut was just swaging it's way into the cup.

@@soundsofnature7015 As the prices go up people have a tendency to keep their vehicles longer, which in turn means either take it to a Stealership, local repair shop or do the repairs themselves. If it comes down to paying to put a ball joint on or paying for a prescription I for one will do the work myself and use the money saved to get the medicine my daughter needs to keep her alive. Knowing which ones are the best to get the job done helps me do just that.
Some Harbor Freight tools I consider them to be “Single Use” plus the repair for which you need it is something you only do every 6 years so I just buy the cheapest tool, use it and dispose it at the metal recycling center. The DIY savings are greater than the cost to buy new tools.

I never would have guessed that one was able to produce so much more pressure, I thought this test would just tell us which one would fail first but things got so much more interesting.
I think the most common ones most of us use are OTC since that’s what the parts stores loan out, or Astro, Snapoff, Matco

I bought a used astro press about 10 years ago it worked great for years but sadly the press frame has opened up and i can no longer use it to install ball joints they always go in on an angle. Cant really complain, it held up for longer than expected and they're fairly inexpensive.

I've got the old Pittsburgh press, cost me a whopping $30. I've used it mostly for u-joints and and some ball joints. Hasn't bent yet. Used a IR 2135Ti on it.
Love this new series guys. You're growing so fast n diversifying like crazy. I have the maddox n I mean I put it through hell on 4 ball joints on a 95 ford f150 using a breaker bar n 3 ft of cheater bar n it held up just fine with no bending
As a DIY-ER, I own a Maddox set, used it to replace ball joints and Universal joints and had no problem. Was a good buy for me.

I have the Maddox, used it on the rusted stuck ball joints on my 1995 Chevy 2500. Didn't even break a sweat, pressed them right out then right back in. I highly recommend it. I was using a Kobalt 24v, non XTR. That also did great, went through a bar of a 4 amp hour battery after 2 ball joints (uppers are riveted on this truck) and all of the front end bolts.
Most of the ball joint presses, many of the high end companies say in directions NOT too use impacts on them. Only by hand.. but I have always used impacts and never broke a high end C-frame
"Don't use with impact wrench" is the press equivalent of "not for use as a hammer or prybar" on other tools.
@@1337penguinman Don't use your screwdriver as a prybar or chisel XDDD, just broke my baby snap on pocket screwdriver/probably not branded as a prybar....prying something. Thing was like 10 dollars so. Which isnt cheap for what it is, but yeah.
FWIW - All of OTC Tool's official channel Ball Joint Press demonstration videos (ex: ruclips.net/video/uJilnrCJsxc/видео.html ) show them using impact and their model 7248 (kit # 7249) is made in USA & doesn't cost much more if at all than the cheap ones do.

I'm super excited for this new series! I'm always suspicious of Amazon's too-good-to-be-true 4.5 and 5 star reviews, but as far as tools and auto parts go I haven't found a way to truly know what's what. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into these videos!

I definitely would like to see the OTC on that rig. I have spent a lot of time pressing anchor pins out with them by tightening them down with the impact and then beating on them with a sledge.
I learned long ago from a veteran mechanic with balancer pullers & presses....If its stuck and seems unyielding....Tension it up and give the bolt a nice TAP! with a sledge...the shock forces will usually break any bonds...otherwise you'll ruin the tool. Also heat and shocking the junction while its still hot with PB Blaster will undo galvanic interaction.

@@ericbrandt829 map gas+pb blaster=hot oil treatment. Works well. Especially on rusted nuts and bolts. For presses and stuff, yes the extra smack def works wonders. If thats not working add the hot oil treatment. Project farm actually did a vid testing kroil, pb blaster, atf mixed w acetone, cheap liquid wrench, etc. The cheapest one, liquid wrench actually worked the best

Neat! I've been using a cheapy set (labeled as ATD, probably same manufacturer as the Amazon, and most other cheapy sets out there) and it's held up well for 15 years now. I've had it pretty bowed out pressing kingpins and chassis bushings, but it's always returned to its shape. It's been impacted since day 1 (counter to the operator instructions) and round here, there's no balljoint that isn't rusty.

I wonder how the industry premium tool, the Snap-On BJPT would have fared? My family used to be in the car repair biz and bent up all the cheap tools just as you show. Once the Snappy kit was purchased, bending failure ended. I inherited the kit and even with shop use, its straight, its got great threads, and non of the rings or plates are deformed. It had use on suspensions and on light hydraulic systems driving seized pins... and it still all works like new.
You get what you pay for, sometimes!
If the ball joint doesn't come out on full force, hit it with a metal hammer. I did that with a universal joint that had maxed out using my bench vise. One moderate blow to the joint and it was out.
Try a 20 year old pitman arm in a Ford or Chevy truck. I had 1 that wouldn't come out with a 1in breaker bar & 7ft pipe.
Oh & I still hit it with an air hammer, my mechanic was so mad.
That's how I do all ball joints now. Just crank the press down moderately tight, smack the metal next to the joint with a BFH, tighten, snack, repeat. Way less effort and a lot less violent when there isn't 10k lbs of force on it when it breaks loose.
@@christopherblodgett8362 yeah that was me back in the day & a pitman arm, definitely not a ball joint. I now do it your way cause your right it's much safer.
@@joselozano0528 I first learned about it fighting with the upper frame mount for the front track bar on my jeep TJ. Someone in the group told me to smack the side of the frame mount and I couldn't believe how easy it worked. Then I tried it on the upper and lower ball joints and they popped right out. Then tried it on the tie rod ends with just light/moderate pressure from a 1/2" ratchet on a small cheap harbor freight ball joint separator and they popped right out too. And this was on a rusty jeep that came from NY. Almost as much of a game changer as discovering 3/8" battery impact wrenches lol.

The only thing that sucks about it is the price.
As a diy guy I would be curious how these stack up against the various ones you can rent at a parts store. That would put in perspective if it is worth owning one or just renting it when needed.
Honestly I’d just rent them. You pay a deposit and get your money back when you return it. Unless you’re a mechanic for a living, you’re not doing ball joints often enough that a trip to the auto parts store is inconvenient. Spend that money on other tools you use often. Just my two cents.
Being a retired Ford motor auto light truck tech I have and used a MAC Tools Ball Joint Press set I used it for years and put in hundreds of Ball joints. Kept it cleaned and lubed I never had any trouble out of it.

I had a HF and it bent trying to remove a lower ball joint on a 2001 dodge 2500 pickup. Never did get it out. Replaced with an Astro but haven’t used it yet. I’m curious how the astro would do. I hear the OTC is suppose to be good also.
I use my old Harbor Freight set to loan to people I don’t care for. Seriously the Astro may do it but I just skip to the snap on for anything but small cars!
It would be nice to see some "Big Boy" brands like Snap-On, Mac, etc.

Despite trying my hardest, I cannot figure out the reason for doubling the deformation reading. If the pressure cage does not swell during the test, the measurement is the "total" without doubling. At most, if you want to calculate each individual prong deformation, I would rather divide than multiply. What is going on?

You are correct. Torque test channel got that aspect wrong. a 5mm deflection is just that, a 5mm deflection.
Was about to comment on the same thing. Indeed his measurement already equals to the total deflection, because the setup is not symmetric (deformation only shows in the front, at least if the pressure thingy does not deform).
Great video but I have to ask, why are you doubling the deflection measurement? The piston is still backed against the rear foot of the tool and any deflection back there would also show up as increased clearance at the front where you measure.
The total dimensional growth at 14:39 was greater than anything we measured using the D-handle by measuring one end, and that's from a 1/2" earthquake impact. There was bend going on at the back during the runs, we just couldn't access it and put a number to it. So we doubled everything, which since they are just being compared to each other should still be usefull, but agreed not the best approach. Some 12" calipers would have been better measuring the whole press length, but we plan to test larger c frames to and even 12" calipers would not have worked there and we couldn't swing $350 calipers.
@@TorqueTestChannel Anytime tool 12" calipers on Amazon are a pretty nice set for $80. I'm a career machinist and use them when I need the bigger size. Sometimes handy too having a dial caliper that does standard and metric

@@TorqueTestChannel You are referencing your measurements from the back side of the ball joint press. Measurements that you took are the total delection. Body of the ram is acting as a gauge block.

Would love to see a “drag race” between the Astro Pnuematic 7865/7897 and the Powerbuilt 648617. I would think these two kits would be near the top spending limits a moderate to heavy DIY’er would feel comfortable buying. These tools also seem to present as better quality compared to the OMT kits. It would also be awesome if you used the press collars and adapters in the kits. It seems like this is where these tools really give up. It’s not so much the forcing screw and c-frame press, it’s moreover the cups and adapters that bend and crack. Love your channel!!! Keep up the good work!!!
I personally use the powerbuilt kit. Seems to work great. I've even used it for things it's not designed for like removing wheel bearings.

Didn't even use one of these when I did a ball joint. Used the screw wedge thing to bust it loose from the control arm, and a combination of part of a bearing press kit, a 10lb sledge and some larger impact sockets to press out and in on the knuckle.
I have had that HF tool for a number of years and used it a few times over the years. It's still holding up okay.i keep the threads cleaned and lubed. Only thing I could ask for is a bigger selection of sizes but those can be bought or use other things as a receiver.

I've used my 2767? the New h1/2 high torque anyways, on a powerbuilt branded kit. I tell you, i had that think just GOING at it flat out, needed to even get a fresh battery to really get it out of there. Did the job and nothing broke so...i'm glad.
Really cool new test and I'm excited to see more results with it, but y'all really should implement some sort of blast shield since a failure on this could definitely lead to fragmentation. Perhaps a vertical pane with a porthole for the Milwaukee to pass through. Would hate to see y'all get hurt
Definitely give tiger tool a go at it, they fall under the “more pricey” category so that’s why I’m interested.
I've had a Snap-On (I think it's a BJP1) for years. I don't use it much anymore because I've lost or ruined quite a few of the adapter cups and other parts, but the press itself seems to be as solid as it always was. This press is quite a bit more robust than the OTC and it's many clones. With its grease fitting on the threaded end of the frame and finer pitch thread on the screw, it just seems to be better built. I'll bet it will be a contender for the top spot. I also have a hodgepodge of OTC and Astro, which are my primary tools now. The cups and adapters seem to be interchangeable, they're easy to find on all the tool trucks (except for the Snap-On truck), and seem to hold up well.

While not a ball joint press, the Snap-On TAP1 brake anchor pin press is designed to be used with a 3/4” impact. Taking that press to the limit would be cool. Keep the good content coming.

I have the Snap-on BJP1 and the Astro Master Kit and had huge successes with both.
I can attest for the strength of the snap-on ball joint press, (BJP1). Used it for traction bar bushings on heavy duty fords, spring shackles on pull behind trailers, ball joints of all sizes and types, rigged it to use to remove a slack adjuster in the field one time…one of the best tool investments I’ve ever made
ASTRO vs. OEM vs. OTC im looking to replace my stolen MATCO Master set (otc w/matco brand 2 cases) and im not going to lay down an other fortune on a master kit but am leaning towards the astro, bought a used powerbuilt set, no complaints, but not sureit will hold up long term like my matco/otc thanks, great job guys keep it up!
We have been beating the crap out of a matco (OTC?) BALL JOINT RESS AT WORK FOR 20 YEARS. It has visibly bent while in use but always returned to normal shape and never messed up the threads. I have used a 3' breaker bar on it until it wouldn't turn any more then beat it with a 4lb hammer to shock the ball joint out. It still works great!
I would love to see the Astro compared to the Snap-On, Matco and OTC.
The shop I work for awhile back had an Astro as a shop tool, and it seemed to hold up well. I would wonder if it still is a good tool and worth the lower price tag vs the more expensive ones.

Use the snap-on all the time with our impacts and have never done any damage.
I’ve had the Maddox the last couple years since I don’t usually do too much ball joint replacement, just don’t see that all that much, but I do it every now and then. Didn’t want to fork over the OTC or Snap on or Matco, glad to see for the price it’s actually not that bad!

I have the harbor freight model. I’ve only used it for 12 ball joints, once off and once on, so 24 time. So far it is holding up but the cups and adapters are starting to deform. Great video

I bought one of these OMT sets for a ball joint job. The 2.25" inside diameter sleeve wouldn't fit over the balljoint. I measured with a dial caliper and the actual ID was 2.24". I had to ream around the inside of the sleeve with my dremel to get the thing to fit. That 10 thou makes a difference. Otherwise I didn't have any trouble with the kit.
