- Leica Summicron 50mm f2 version 5: Everything You Need To Know for your Leica camera. I have owned several Leica M mount 50mm focal lengths. One of my new more recent ones is the Leica Summicron Version 5. Unlike my version 3 copy of the summircron I absolutely fell in love with the version 5 copy. This Leica Summicron lives on my Leica M10.

I’ve used that lens, manufactured in 2000, since 2012 and love it. This is my primary lens on my Leicas.
I have a V5 on my M10, and it only leaves that body to go on to my M4. I absolutely love 50mm and the f2 is more than enough for what I do with it. I think a 50 and a 21 is all anyone really needs M camera wise.
Do you feel it is good enough for night time photography in city lights on a m10?
@@rutayanx yeah I’d say so. But to be honest it’s very rare that I shoot that kind of thing. Only on vacation - and even then that would be rare.
@@johnmarsland3442 thanks!
you can also get a v4 in good condition, for a lot less, same optics as the v5, no integrated hood but same short focusing throw and has a tab too.
Great piece of advice regarding practising and working on one's craft something we don't do enough!
You’ve got a bunch of misinformation here: the optical formula actually hasn’t changed since 1979 making the v5 the same as the v4. Also you state the difference between a v3 and v5 is the built in hood, but it’s a totally different mandler design.
Desperately trying to decide between this and the Zeiss 50 1.5... I feel like im going to miss the close focus, but the small size of the zeiss is so attractive.
Like you, I'm addicted to 50mm lenses. I just sold my Zeiss 28mm and 35mm which will offset the cost of the used Summicron 50mm V5 I just bought,. I also have a Zeiss 50mm f1.5 Sonnar, a Zeiss 50mm f2 Planar, and a Leica Summitar 5cm f2 Collapsable made in 1942. I use them all on my M240 or M262.
Great video about a great lens. I've got the 50mm v4 because of the focus tab and i really like the classic but also sharp rendering. Could you give a little insight about your editing? Your images have a very nice analog touch. Since the look of your images looks pretty consistent i assume you`re using presets? edit: looks like some form of kodak gold preset? Greetings from germany!
I have the Leica 50/2 Summicron Vers. V in chrome. Extremely sharp, great bokeh wide open, modern look. Only thing I do not like with this lens is its protruding hood. It can easily pushed back during shooting - I read once this can be potentially fixed by Leica, but I don't want to send it in just for this reason.
This video is right on time i was looking to buy the lens and this confirms it, thanks so much Tim!
Boom! So glad I could help!
Do you use a m10-r? I am planning to pick a m10-r with the same lens you reviewed.
Hello Tim. What would you choose 50 summilux asph or summicron v5 m
Do you find this lens flares much?
I am not sure if I have ever gotten it to flare at all. I've tried but I simply have not been able to do it.
It has focus shift, except at f2
Just a tip: there is no actual "version 5" Summicron, this is Leica's way of selling a different lens casing with a built in hood but for the same optical design of the V4. It's just marketing.
Good video, but that music is horrific, vile and overbearing.
Get the Version iv, it’s the same optics for less money.
As someone who had a version IV and moved on to a V, the V has some definite advantages such as improved build quality and with the later versions a much better coating and better subsequent flare resistance. The only reason I would still go for the IV is if you prefer having a tab.
I have the IV and prefer it to the V. I rented the V for thee weeks. Optically I noticed no difference. I disliked the ergonomics of the V. The version I rented had a loose hood, that you could not lock it was an issue for me, as was the lack of a tab.
Yet my philosophy of photography is, "Whatever floats your boat, just don't put a hole in mine or anyone else's." I know a number of happy V owners - to each their own.
