- For Indigenous peoples of the Mojave, the intelligent raven holds a lot of power, is respected as an elder and symbolizes transition. In her role as a conservation social scientist at The Living Desert, Sienna Thomas (Piipaash / Tsitsitas) works with Indigenous youth to reconnect them with the land, including nature hikes with women. Elizabeth Paige (Torres Martinez Band of Cahuilla Indians), an education and stewardship manager at the Native American Land Conservancy, discusses the importance of birds in her culture's way of life. She notes a particular area where Great horned owl and hawk families typically share nests has been overtaken by a massive influx of ravens recently. This overabundance of ravens, say Thomas and Paige, is caused by an imbalance in people's behaviors.
