    I wouldn't blame cat, even their own people warned her that jamie won't last the night (someone's gonna kill him) out of anger after his attempt to escape, and if he died, her only chance to gain her girls back is nada. Hence why she sent him to king's landing with brienne for an exchange. It was rob the one who was jeopardising everything, his people, his family, by choosing talisa and breaking his promise with the freys bc of a romantic interest that he could not afford to have at that time. In the end, he is still a child.

      The folly is the Frey's, Bolton's, and the Lannister's for breaking a sacrosanct law of guest right, this is made even more clear in the books, if anything the Red Wedding made things more chaotic and untenable for the conspirators involved. Catelyn releasing Jaime objectively weakened their position considerably, the 'security' of Jaime's well-being wasn't in Cat's mind when she released him, and something terrible could have just as easily happened to both Brienne and Jaime while out on the road, and in fact almost did several times, Robb could have secured Jaime at Riverrun if it became too much of a danger to allow him in camp, his own blood wouldn't have sold him out to Tywin Lannister, not even Edmure, the vainglorious fool he is would dare betray blood, but now we'll never know what Robb would have done with him because Catelyn went behind his back and undermined him as king.
      Broken betrothals happen all of the time both in this universe and in real history, it is not some vile sin that Robb critics make it out to be, and Walder Frey had already inflated the worth of his family's bridge as it was when he made his "offer"(which was in truth glorified extortion), his family would have been better off accepting the marriage to a Lord Paramount, as it is, after his betrayal of Robb, his family's name is in the muck, and they're facing rebellion and retaliation from every corner of the Trident, things could not have turned out worse for the Frey's for betraying the Stark's and Tully's.

    Tbh Cat didn't get Ned killed by taking Tyrion. It was only 1 small event compare to what actually got him killed : Investigating about Robert's bastards, telling what he knew to Cersei's face 🤦🏽‍♀️ quitting from his right hand role (because after that he was just a lord and it was easier for Jaime to attack him). With or without Cat, Ned played the game so bad at king landing . That's what got him killed. Joeffrey, himself and Cersei are for me the only ones really responsable of his death

  • @manuelagaviria5542
    @manuelagaviria5542 5 месяцев назад +42

    Catelyn released Jamie as a way to trade him for her daughters, you can't fault her for being a mother and wanting to get her daughters back who could potentially be in danger. Besides, you have to remember that the Karstarks were going to kill Jamie that night, it was either let Jamie get killed or have Brienne take him to Kings Landing and trade him for her daughters. Having Jamie killed would not have helped anyone and would have definitely made things worse for Sansa and supposedly Arya who she thinks is still there.

  • @stevenreyes4791
    @stevenreyes4791 5 месяцев назад +59

    Something important thats not emphasized in the show is catelyns personal feeling of powerlessness as a woman during this war, Robb's seeming indifference to getting the girls back (he does want them back but its not the priority)
    The peace terms in 2x1 were made by **Tyrion** (who she trusts to pay his debts) and offerred the girls back + Ned's remains as long as the North returns to the iron throne and Jaime is returned. The war couldve ended a while ago but the north wants revenge, not peace. This obviously frustrates catelyn and causes her to trust that tyrion would returm the girls if she sends jaime in a sort of under the table deal, especially after her two sons are killed as an result of the north being at war

    • @lka9900

      I think Robb is blinded by the honor in which he was raised. He has no idea of how terrible it would be for Sansa and Arya to be stranded in Kings Landing, because he would never do terrible things to little girls. Cat understands the terrible ways the girls could be treated, and has a more realistic understanding of it and is therefore more desperate to get them back. I think Robb genuinely can’t fathom how dangerous could become for them being unsupervised in Cersei’s court. (Even though Robb knows they pushed Bran out a window).

      @@lka9900 Both Robb and Cat are each naive in their own ways.
      I agree that Robb probably believed Sansa and Arya would be treated well as hostages, in the same why his father treated Theon.
      Robb has decided that, though he loves them, the girls aren't important enough to give up Jaime.
      Which, as a woman, I am loathe to say is true.
      Jaime is Tywin's heir, favorite child, and battle commander. You maybe could have exchanged him for Ned.
      But not two little girls.
      All that said, Tywin, Cersei, and Joffrey are all wild cards. None of them are honorable or predictable enough that I would have trusted any trade agreement for Jaime.
      The Stark's only hope was that Tywin and Cersei would tread more carefully as long as Jaime's life is in the balance...

    @StudioGek So just a wanted to remind you that Karstarks were going to kill Jamie the night Catelyn freed him. So she had a good reason to do it. She is under the impression that the Lannister’s have Arya and Sansa so allowing the Karstark’s to get their revenge which is a dumb move in the first place during a war would not only guarantee Sansa and “Arya’s”beheading but also would have thrown a big play in the war in the garbage heap and set it on fire.
    I totally understand it is very very frustrating to see Catelyn do this. But in the books she is a lot better character trust me!! Plus her motives make a lot more sense getting all of the context and her thought process. I don’t want to brush it off as oh it’s no big deal give her a break…but at the same time she did have a reason.
    Also I don’t want to spoil anything but in the books there is a huge character development for Catelyn that doesn’t take place in the show. It is sooo bada$$ but for now I’ll just leave at that as to not spoil anything. Whenever you get to that point in the show I’ll comment again and fill you boys in

    Cat freeing Jaime has more context in the books, and more gravitas. Throughout Book 2, Cat is in Riverrun (the seat of House Tully), dealing with death after death. Her father Hoster is dying, mumbling about something strange (and horrifying) he did to Cat's sister, Lysa when they were young. Then Ned's remains arrive from the South. Then, in the last chapter she gets news from Winterfell that Theon has burnt Bran and Rickon and basically left her only one son, Robb. Cat's mind is swirling with grief and guilt and everything seems black. Then, she takes Brienne and steps into Jaime's prison cell. It's described like her descending into the darkest recesses of her own mind.
    Jaime is like the final boss for Cat in Book 2. He forces her to face that her religion might be a lie, that her husband was unfaithful, and that no matter what revenge she takes, she will not get the dead back, nor will her guilt go away. In the last sentence, she asks Brienne for her sword. We don't find out what she does with Jaime until Book 3, but I love that last chapter. It's full of sadness and darkness.

    Also i know book and show canon are different, but i find it interesting to compare the 2 and sometimes the book helps to understand the show characters a little better, so here is the passage when robb confronts Cat about jaime's escape:
    Catelyn faced him calmly. “Lord Rickard, the Kingslayer’s dying would not have bought life for your children. His living may buy life for mine.”
    The lord was unappeased. “Jaime Lannister has played you for a fool. You’ve bought a bag of empty words, no more. My Torrhen and my Eddard deserved better of you.”
    “Leave off, Karstark,” rumbled the Greatjon, crossing his huge arms against his chest. “It was a mother’s folly. Women are made that way.”
    “A mother’s folly?” Lord Karstark rounded on Lord Umber. “I name it treason.”
    “Enough.” For just an instant Robb sounded more like Brandon than his father. “No man calls my lady of Winterfell a traitor in my hearing, Lord Rickard.” When he turned to Catelyn, his voice softened. “If I could wish the Kingslayer back in chains I would. You freed him without my knowledge or consent . . . but what you did, I know you did for love. For Arya and Sansa, and
    out of grief for Bran and Rickon. Love’s not always wise, I’ve learned. It can lead us to great folly, but we follow our hearts . . . wherever they take us. Don’t we, Mother?”
    Is that what I did? “If my heart led me into folly, I would gladly make whatever amends I can to Lord Karstark and yourself.”
    Lord Rickard’s face was implacable. “Will your amends warm Torrhen and Eddard in the cold graves where the Kingslayer laid them?” He shouldered between the Greatjon and Maege Mormont and left the hall.
    Robb made no move to detain him. “Forgive him, Mother.”
    “If you will forgive me.”
    “I have. I know what it is to love so greatly you can think of nothing else.”
    Catelyn bowed her head. “Thank you.” I have not lost this child, at least.

    • @vbb2076
      @vbb2076 5 месяцев назад +3

      “If this was an escape,” she said softly, “and not an exchange of hostages, why should the Lannisters give my daughters to Brienne?”
      “It will never come to that. The Kingslayer will be returned to us, I have made certain of it.”
      “All you have made certain is that I shall never see my daughters again. Brienne might have gotten him to King’s Landing safely . . . so long as no one was hunting for them. But now . . .”
      She's just one of GRRM's best character, a mother filled with the fear of losing all her children. She also knows that Robb was not going to exchange Jaime for Sansa and Arya (he was keeping him for Ned at first I believe, not quite sure about the timeline here). While Robb wants to save and free his sisters without a doubt, women and girls are not worth the same as the Kingslayer and first son of Tywin, this knowledge pushes Cat to take matters in her own hands i think.
      Edit: i found the passage about an exchange for the girls : “I’m almost a man grown, and a king -your king, ser. And I don’t fear Jaime Lannister. I defeated him once, I’ll defeat him again if I must, only . . .” He pushed a fall of hair out of his eyes and gave a shake of the head. “I might have been able to trade the Kingslayer for Father, but . . .”
      “. . . but not for the girls?” Her voice was icy quiet. “Girls are not important enough, are they?"
      Robb made no answer, but there was hurt in his eyes. Blue eyes, Tully eyes, eyes she had given him. She had wounded him, but he was too much his father’s son to admit it.
      That was unworthy of me, she told herself. Gods be good, what is to become of me? He is doing his best, trying so hard, I know it, I see it, and yet . . . I have lost my Ned, the rock my life was built on, I could not bear to lose the girls as well . . .

    29:40 idk the only way Lord Karstark would have felt avenged is if he killed Jaime, which is exactly what Catelyn is afraid of, she's sure Jaime won't last much longer in the camp. Karstark's son is already dead, but her daughters are still alive and have a chance of coming home. The North went to war to bring Ned and the girls home, but over time they've lost sight of that goal, even Robb has. Understandable, but Catelyn is a mother who thinks literally all of her children besides Robb are at risk of being killed by their captors right now, so she makes a very human decision out of desperation

If you wish not to know what happens in HOUSE OF DRAGONS I suggest you not watch without someone making sure you miss the spoiler it happens he tells her the history of the Tars including what happens to a main character during the war while taking a walk in the sep of Baylor so once he offers to take Margery for a a walk skip ahead you really don't want to hear anything he has to tell Margery from House of Dragons !

    Remember Jamie would die that night anyway because the Karstarks were demanding vengeance and nobody would be willing to die to defend a Lannister. If Jaime got killed then that would mean Sansa would be killed in response and Catelyn thinks they have Arya as well. So instead of losing everything, Catelyn chose to at least use Jaime for a chance to get her daughters back (or at the very least keep them alive). A very reasonable thing to do in her position.

    The way time happens in Game of Thrones is essentially how it happens in real time. The show started in 2011 and ended in 2019 with a few breaks. They had like 8 seasons. So the show sort of lasted 8 years with the same actors growing naturally along the way so the story probably lasted 8 years as well. There is no time jump. But there are "travel jumps" esp. in Season 6 and onward.

    I am here to settle the Jackson and McKay dragon talk. House of the Dragon will answer a lot of your questions, but long story short: Jackson, men HAVE killed dragons but it is/was no easy feat at all and is obviously a suicide sentence for anyone trying. It didn’t happen like you are picturing where there is one Mountain sized guy with a giant sword, it’s actually more realistic what actually happened. And yeah all the big ones were killed off one way or another and the ones they had left never got a chance to grow big for different reasons.

    I totally agree with the point that Theon is one of the best written characters. Yes he is vile and betrayed the starks. His Character has a very raw emotional substance going on. While we dont and will not forgive him, you can understand his motive. Again he made the wrong choice but to be put in situation where his hostage family treated him better than his actual family and father, must put him in an incredible dark place. GRRM does a great job with his "grey" characters. I think many of us would be just as conflicted as theon, maybe not take the same actions but feel just as lonely and desparate for familial love.
