Honda Element Catalytic Converter Theft Repair- Only around $300?

- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- I purchased a Honda Element that someone liberated the catalytic converter from. This repair was relatively easy and cheap, especially when compared to what insurance companies pay out!
The parts I used -
Catalytic converter - amzn.to/3RM4fNm
Front O2 sensor, using DENSO is highly recommended. amzn.to/3MnK2MX
Rear Denso o2 sensor - 234-4733 Honda Downstream - amzn.to/3CGEjP2
Front spring bolts, you could reuse them but for $11 why would you? - amzn.to/3MBMRKg
O2 sensor socket - amzn.to/3P1b8uQ
Thanks for watching!
you are a STUD. Im going to do this repair. What a great video. The theft ruined my day but this video helped & was perfect for a guy like me.
Awesome man!! Best of luck! Keep these old things going! Hopefully you got a decent check from your insurance company!
@@94wvwglxvr6 I don’t have that kind of insurance. I’m putting in another vtec solenoid tomorrow. I welded my license plate number to the new cat and marked it as “ cheap aftermarket. I may spot weld a chain around it from front to back. Dunno yet.
Ended up using an extension kit and some swivel joints with an electrical impact driver. Thanks for the tip on the upstream bolts. I’m getting an upstream o2 sensor code but WA doesn’t do emissions testing so I’m not sure what to do but maybe it doesn’t matter.
@@ArtworkAnon You have to reset your ECU to get it to communicate with your new o2 sensor. Remove the ECU fuse and turn car to accessory for 5 mins. Replace fuse and start the car new sensor should now work properly.
*THANK YOU.* Mine was stolen about a month ago while I was in the supermarket. I was told it takes about 2 minutes to steal one. But this morning I happened upon a video where it was removed in *1 minute.*
I thought, _if it only takes 1 minute to steal one without a saw, then surely I don't have to spend over $1,000 to have a mechanic put a new one back in._
I thought I was just being optimistic, until I saw your video. You make it clear that _this is doable._
I also appreciate the extra tips. 😎👍
I don't generally do auto repairs myself. So I'm unclear as to some of the tools you were mentioning. I'm hoping I can find out as I go - but more importantly, find out _before I even start._ 😏
Take care! 🙋🏼♂️
Hey guys, I did this repair and was still popping codes until I reset my ECU. After the reset my sensors began reading properly. If you still have codes try resetting the ECU by removing the fuse, put the car in accessory by turning the key wait 5 mins, turn the car off. Replace the fuse and start the car. New aftermarket sensors should now read properly.
*Thanks for this!*
They got my daughters CAT last week, cut the flang and sensor wires, the flang screw snapped in the manifold flang so that was fun dremelling them off from both sides with a disk. I ordered complete walker muffler kit but up in the air on what CAT to get for NY, NY is CARB so I was thinking about getting the Walker 82894 as they recommend on their site for my state. Anyone has an opinion or any recommendations? Thanks BTW good video.
Mine was finally stolen, is this kind attractive to thieves as well? It was suggested to go with a straight pipe, but I researched that method, and I'm Leary of it. I just dread buying a CC and getting it stolen again, I cant afford a shield. Any suggestions?
At least they did cut your resonator's flange! They totally cut mine off. At least now I have an excuse to replace the exhaust with that Injen system I always wanted lol.
My daughter's CAT was stolen today smh. Hows that CAT you installed holding up? Thx
Bought my E w/o the cat. Got mine stolen while I was working 3 nights ago😔 good things was the cat wasn’t OEM🤭
Thanks for this video...gave me the confidence to replace my stolen one and saved me hundreds of dollars vice using my insurance.
Hey Joe! just got mine yanked. I was really feeling the anxiety hitting hard until i watched your video. Thank you so much. subscribed.
Had ours stolen last year on Thanksgiving. We are here in SoCal so I had to get a CARB approved cat. Great video man. Anyone watching protect your catalytic converter even if it's aftermarket thieves still steal them not knowing.
Thank you very much for the awesome video!
🤣They got me LAST NIGHT 😡😡😡
Thank you nice video and yes mine was also stolen I feel your pain anger 🤬 disgust and they need to increase the punishment for these scumbags give them mandatory minimum three to five years that would definitely curtail their attempts to continue
Yup, I got yoinked too.
Great video. Have you had an emissions test with the new cat installed? Curious how it performed. Thanks.
I have not, but no cat codes so far! Almost a year now.
How much it cost?
Joe, isn't their a gasket that you forgot to purchase and install on the back part of the cat connecting to the rest of the exhaust system? I looked at a diagram of the exhaust system and their is a gasket that goes on both sides. I'm guessing the kit you bought only had 1 but there is suppose to be 2 gaskets to do this job apparently. Did you buy a second gasket and install it like you did in the front in the back as well? or did you just install the back portion without a gasket?
Yes there is also a back gasket included in the kit! I forgot to show that part. Sorry!
You can see the back gasket sitting on the ground underneath the new cat at about 2 minutes! Left that part out! Sorry!
Hv u got ur car smoged? Did it pass? I believe that's the problem with non OEM cat.
There is no smog testing where I live (NYS) but the CEL stays off and it passes inspection.
@@94wvwglxvr6 Great for u, no smog test.
There's a RUclips channel Muffler Tech. He post some info about stolen catalytic converter & insurance stuff... What to look for and so on.
He said they repair tons of Honda Elements 4 cat converter with after market Parts. No problem smog test passing.
hi! my element's cat got stolen a few weeks ago.. trying to purchase parts to save money and bring to my mechanic, he told me I need 2 spring bolt kits and 2 gaskets. I used your link for spring bolt kits but do you know what type of gaskets are needed? On mine, the pipe was cut so I don't have a place to bolt it on
What is up ✅💰💯
💯💯💯
thanks for the video, my catalytic converter is fine but i've been trying to find a video that show how to replace the "down pipe" donut gasket, you just showed me
when I was tightening the spring bolts to the flange I think I gave it a little too much mustard because after a point of increasing resistance I found there was no more resistance and it no longer tightened, did I strip the female threads you think? I mean it's on there and drives okay now, kind of worried because I tightened the rest of the bolts in a similar fashion...
Mine was stolen tonight. I'll do this myself. Nice video. Thsnks.
Huge thanks sooo much for posting this!!! My cat got stolen last year and i could not for the life of me find a video so the only method i knew was to use a combo of flex pipe and straight piping. Thanks to you i will be able to redo my whole exhaust system and have no clamps and drive with much ease😎😎😎😎🤙🏽🤙🏽
Is it just me or are the two o2 sensors linked seem like the same thing?
How long does the extension have to be? 8 inches long enough to reach the bolts?
Did you put any type of heat shield over top of the cat?
From a fellow Element owner that didn't take the time to protect his cat...
Thank you for this video and the info in the description!
How hard was it to remove the bolts at the front toward the engine? Did you need a lot of penetrating oil?
None at all. It was very easy in my case. I’m going to be doing this job with a car the spent it’s whole life in the rust belt- I’m assuming it’s going to be much harder.
Thanks again for the upload! I ordered one w/ the link you posted, installed, drove all day, and no problems.👌 it was a cheap part so we'll see how long it holds up
Just about a year on mine and so far so good!
Hey Joe! Mines was just stolen as well unfortunately. About How long does this take to ship
I'm guessing this may already be taken care of, but I'm in a position where I need to order one as well. I'm not in any rush, as I don't have to get an emissions test again for another 6 months, but if I were in a hurry (and without additional research), Amazon has one for my '09 Element that would arrive within a week.
Where u from or what state u film ur video am in Ca. Do u think that caralic is legal to used in Ca. ?
It is not a CARB compliant cat. So no go for CA unfortunately
How did you stop the nuts spinning on the front flange? Did you just hold them until tight? It seems like there is a heat shield in the way on mine. I think I'm going to do this myself but I'm just concerned about getting the front bolts started and have them not spin.
The ones that thread into the manifold? They thread into the manifold. There is no nut
@@94wvwglxvr6 oh good. Thanks. I assumed it was the same setup as the rear flange
What brand is that? My one got stole from Catalic haters!
Link in the description!
How much do you torque down the bolts for the cata?
2-3 uggaduggas
they cut the wires from the top so I have no idea how that would be replaced
Follow the wires up and disconnect the plastic connector... probably about 8 inches of wire dangling down. When you buy new o2 sensors, they already have the wires and connector on the sensor, so you just unplug the old wires and plug the new ones in.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Appreciate you
Love the video. I want to ask you how is the catalytic converter holding up for you this whole time? And do they include 2 sets of springs, bolts and gaskets for both sides of the catalytic in the hardware kit or i need to buy them separately?
My 2008 element AWD catalytic converter got stolen and I want to know if you recommend this catalytic for me?
Thank you.
1.5 years and it’s still great! They include the rear spring bolts. The front ones you either reuse or buy new ones- they’re $11 at advance.
@@94wvwglxvr6 do they include gaskets for the front and back ?
@@vincentcontrol yup!
So what to do if they cut the catalytic converter almost at the front 😫 they also cut the flange of the cat
They cut most of the front off on mine. The front flange goes up pretty high. For the rear one you’ll need someone who can weld a new flange on.
buy a tig welder off amazon and practice on some 14g sheet metal :)
So the bolts at the exhaust manifold were a different size then what the factory used? And thanks for posting this!
The kit I bought and linked come with 2 sets of nuts and bolts- one set is useless (and I think is for the CRV) and the other set (the bronze / gold ones in the video) are used to bolt the cat to the rear exhaust section. You can reuse the bolts for the front section, but for $11 I would recommend replacing them while you’re in there.
@@94wvwglxvr6 I went ahead and ordered the correct bolts from Amazon. They should be here today. My catalytic converter was stolen. That's the reason for my question. Complete pain in the ass. Thanks for answering my question Joe! Take care.
how long did it last you?
New owner is still driving around with this same cat
Chuck is here
Buddy thank you for the video that was so helpful
I appreciate it
Hey, Joe. I'm curious how this exact part has been holding up since you installed it? Considering ordering the exact part.
Great! I’ve put around 12,000 miles on it since. No issues at all
You are def in a salt free area. Most of us wish ours was so rust free. .lol
I use aftermarket stuff. Haven't had any trouble. I get yelled at all the time.. OEM OEM.. If everything I bought was OEM I would have twice the worth of the vehicle just in parts.
Good Video.
