  • Chrome OS Flex Installation WARNING - It Will Delete, Format And Erase All The Data On All Hard Drives Attached During Installation !! YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR FILES, BACKUPS, DATA, EVERYTHING!!!!
    Thank you to Gus Alverte for bringing light to this problem in a comment on another video. Please show Gus some appreciation and give his comment a MASSIVE thumbs up here's the video, Gus's comment is the top pinned one • How To Install Chrome ...
    So the message here is very simple. Do not have any other drive attached to your computer when installing Chrome OS Flex. Only have the hard drive or SSD that is in the laptop of desktop, active.
    TO BE CLEAR. If you have other drives attached to your computer when installing Chrome OS Flex, the Chrome OS Flex USB installer will delete all the attached hard drives, not just the one that you want to install it to. In fact. The Flex installer will actually install the OS to all the drives and not just delete and erase them.
    This is not a problem for a computer that only has one drive attached, usually the internal drive. But do remember to back off any files that you may have on your drive before installing Flex, as you will lose all the data on the drive because Flex will erase and use the entire drive.
    You can not install Chrome OS Flex at this point in time to a drive of your choice and you can't install it to a dedicated partition either.
    This is not a problem when you are making a live boot Chrome OS Flex USB flash drive.
    At this point in time you can not dual boot Chrome OS Flex with Windows on the same drive. You can dual boot but you have to use two drives and make sure that you disconnect your Windows boot, system drive when installing Chrome OS Flex to the second drive.

    I didn't know this. The now legacy Cloudready used to support multiboot in the past then was removed but didn't know that all drives got formatted. Thanks for the warning Gus & to David for backing that up.

    Wonder why Google didn't warn people, for it only says it will wipe everything from one's drive, without mentioning *drives*. And even when I added (connected) a second drive after installing Flex, OS Flex appeared to take over my bootloader so that I could no longer boot either drive, resulting in a bricked pc with no longer access to even the bios. What a monster, although a secure monster.

    I have an OEM installed 64 bit Windows 10 pc . A Chinese brand . FYI: Esc key gave me the BIOS. BIOS make was from American MegaTrends ( AMi). I was unable to install Chrome O SD Flex. Can you give me a link to a page that will guide me through the BIOS .

  • @PhilFerrar
    @PhilFerrar 2 года назад +1

    Bit about overwriting ALL drives is not quite true, at least in my experience. I had a PCIe SSD [with Cloudready] set to my primary boot device together with a 'normal' SATA SSD [with Windows 11] installed and running fine - I just use the BIOS start up option to switch to Windows if I ever need it. When I created the Chrome OS Flex USB 'boot' memory stick and loaded up it was fine. Going on to carry out the full install [to the PCIe] I just clicked to 'proceed' [there was however no sign of the usual option to select a target Drive, as I would have needed if I had wanted to install Flex on the SATA]. When finished both the Flex and W11 drives work as expected. If unsure and to be ultra careful some BIOS settings [depending upon computer make] allow you to 'configure off' drives so you could ensure that only the target drive was configured 'on' before proceeding.

      If you read through the comments to such videos you’ll quickly see that most people get confused with what some may see as simple tasks such as formatting a drive and BIOS is too much for most people. Plus, going to a BIOS for most people usually ends up with issues and more questions. To say, just remove all drives other than the one you want to install the OS to, is a much safer and better bet.

      @@DavidHarry Hi Dave - take your point about 'lack of familiarity' with BIOS etc. but arguably the same people could make a total hash of opening up a PC or laptop and disconnecting things. Additionally my approach does not need a screwdriver - so less chance of screwing things up ! Cheers, Phil

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  2 года назад

      Hi Phil. Yes, you’re correct but this was more for people with drives attached via USB etc. This was a video because of a comment made by someone. I’d already said that I didn’t have the same issue with one of the systems that I’d tried. However it happened on a different system that I tried it on. As you’ve said, it’ll be different BIOSs that will respond differently and boot order will play a part. My main Windows PCs have options to disable SATA and M.2 sockets, just as you’ve said, so no problem for me once I was aware of the issue. However, as I’ve already said, the vast majority of people watching these tutorials simply don’t understand many things that the likes of you or I may not even consider to be a technical point and something that we’d do on autopilot. And those that do understand will know to disable in BIOS anyway once aware of the indiscriminate nature of the installer. I’ve done a number of tutorials about installing variations of Android X86, Chrome OS and tutorials about creating bootable rescue media, partitioning for multiboots, editing GRUB boot loaders etc. And you wouldn’t believe the simple things that people get stuck on, yet they still try to do stuff that’s fairly involved, that they don’t understand or have never done before. I’ve even been blamed for people deleting their Windows drives or boot partitions. Even though I already made the point very clearly about backing up your system drive before continuing and giving them directions to one of my tutorials about creating a rescue boot drive that will disk image. Like I’ve said, it’s just easier to avoid explanations or particular scenarios that may confuse people. Although, you are absolutely correct, my use of ‘ALL drives’ isn’t accurate but hopefully you can now understand why I said that. The last thing I’d want is for anyone to have wiped out a USB storage/drive during the process, which I actually did myself on the second system I tried it on because I wasn’t aware of the issues at that point. Cheers, Dave.

      @@DavidHarry Hi Dave - thanks for taking the time to respond at length - it's appreciated. I'm not into vlogging myself but I do run 'classes' for local 'silver surfers' both in our local watering hole or over a Google MEET link. I concur 100% with your 'you would not believe it' bit - it's truly amazing how what we take for granted may as well be written in Swahili when picked up by those with little or no experience. Anyway I'm totally enjoying for videos's [thumbs up !] that I only came across today and will certainly pass them on to my 'students' - Cheers, Phil

    I had a look at Flex and I'm not impressed. First, there are so many old laptops that it won't work on and secondly, without Play Store there's not much that's appealing about it. I'll pass it by I think. Certainly isn't a Windows 11 killer by any stretch of the imagination.

  • @IDKOKIDK

    It sounds worse than Ransom Ware that encrypts all drives connected to computer, Flex doesn't give you the opportunity to pay to have your data restored

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  2 года назад +1

      Sort of but it's actually part of the Google security function for the installation as far as the partitions are concerned.

      Yes, it does warn that it will erase the destination but doesn't mention anything about erasing and install the OS to ALL the drives attached. Cheers, Dave.

      @@DavidHarry I installed Chrome OS flex yesterday on an iMac that had both MacOS Catalina and Windows 10. Chrome OS DID NOT wipe out the files stored by Mac or Windows. I can still access all my stored and downloaded files on the iMac HDD via the Chrome files app.
      When I had a black screen after my first install of Chrome OS flex, I re-installed the Chrome OS using the Option key while restarting the Mac and saw that it gave me the option to boot into Windows 10, macOS, AND Chrome OS. So perhaps Google has fixed the issue?
      BTW, After the installation of Chrome OS, you need to update (via settings) to the latest version or you will keep getting the screen errors.
