I actually really enjoy only understanding 50% of what he's saying. It's refreshing. Keep it up. Subbed.
please tell me what you said in the first 5 seconds
ATCG Vlogging just finishing off my brew squee from me last video
@@PaulL42654 what the fuck
Nice video. Only one thing wrong Raid is not a backup. Raid can save your data if you loose a disk, but not if you hit delete. Please backup all info. Three copy's two formats cd,hard drive, one off site online, moms house. I case of a fire...
Richard Schulz oh yeah, I know. It was a slip of the tongue really
My comment was just for the viewer of your video. Did not want them to think raid is a backup.
Richard Schulz Oh that's alright
I built my own using WS 2011 with drivepool and still going well. Have looked at others since MS dropped it but nothing comes close for ease of use and virtually install and forget. All from watching this years ago. Cant believe how rude people are these days seeing some comments. Thank you for this video
+Gilbert Lynds well people don't appreciate time and expertise as much as they used to. Especially in a world with everything in the cloud. But thanks man
Thanks for the video! You have some very valid points. What I ended up doing was buying a 2TB Seagate NAS drive (external hard drive with an ethernet port) - that also has a USB input. I ended up hooking up a USB hub to the input, plugged my remaining three 2TB drives into it. Works like a charm for streaming my movies/videos/etc. Thanks again for the video. Looking forward to seeing more.
do you speak english?
Do you?
Turn on captions and it helps.
Just setup my hp n54l :) pretty old but i put 4 x 4tb hdd's. Only able to run 2 x RAID 1 configurations. Has 8GB of ddr3. Perfect little local storage box :)
Just got the N40L myself.. added a low-profile HDMI graphics card and it's runs XBMC at 1080p smoothly on my main TV. Next step is to fully sort file server to sync XBMC library across other devices (bedroom TV, laptop, tablet, etc). FYI - I'm in the same boat regarding RAID (random capacity disks full of media) so will likely attempt JBOD (DriveBender/DrivePool) to do drive-pooling without formatting. Great little multitasking workhorse for the money until I can afford to spend on more devices.
Cool! I'm waiting to see the latest tv tools for W10.
David Cooltions me too
I have had my PC for a bit over a year. Its C: drive is 1 TB and I've trouble filling it up. I only have like 300 gigs of that filled up. I have another drive in it, which I discovered fairly recently. It is also like a 1TB, but it is just for the computer to save its data, it is not something you would wanna put anything on.
From Iowa here. understood every word, even though it was a bit fast. ^5, and will be looking for your newer videos.

I run an iScsi disk on Gigabit network for games. It works great and a majority of the work in games is being done in RAM.
Me:24/7 minecraft running own server
I've gotten used to it and if you ignore the Metro UI its amazing, so much better performance wise and productivity wise
It's an amazing mic dude
I have access to any kind of computer, but I still like a small PC with a large cabinet capacity to hold hard drives, as they tend to collect around the house after a decade or 2..
The best part of running a home server, is it's also a home theater. You don't mention that in your sermon, so far as I heard. And it's really great to use recording capabilities of XBMC DVR software ( or MS Media Center works too).
Therefor, I just run Windows 7 as a media center, home server and backup computer. Put it somewhere that KIDS DON"T KICK IT because I lost a 2TB hard drive that way, and it was just a simple unintentional small bump while the drive was reading data and the heads were exposed... live and learn.
Keep in mind, network based tuner boxes (HomeRunHD) work nicely with Media Center as well, creating a cable television DVR system on a PC, where you no longer need to rent a box from Comcast (US provider). Save serious coin over time.
BEST THING ABOUT A HOME SERVER is DRIVE POOLING SOFTWARE. Collect all your hard drives and use them to host and back up your data on a shared drive pool with replication on a folder by folder basis. All your hard drives are merged with software at OS level (an app), to be 1 big C drive. And that my friend, is MUCH EASIER TO MANAGE OVER TIME. If a drive becomes unavailable, it is still readable for recovery and copy in it's native format. No RAID striping, etc. Merge existing drives with existing data casually and in any order. No need to copy the data to a RAID array, etc.
Finally, check out XBMC Genesis for a home theater driving a big screen TV. I love it. It runs on any type of device and it works really well. Better service than I can find elsewhere at any price. Pandora runs really well on XBMC too.
Jeff Papineau that sounds really cool. One thing I'm most worried about is data degradation over time
Think I might get a dedicated server
Thanks for that, its certainly an interesting thing to do and offloading disks from your main machine is great if you reinstall as much as I do. There's also the possibility of RAIDing those for increased performance and redundancy
yeah its a really good box. I've chucked 4GB of RAM in it and see if it'll run ESXi to run two OSs. You could run it as a desktop for £100 which is fantastic.
I use my Raspberry Pi to run XBMC and it works really well. Draws far less power than running it all through my desktop.
I've done kind of a web/file/media server that I made out of an old PC I had laying around. Installed a Linux distro on it with apache2, mysql, and php (so far). It's worked great for me and has literally cost me nothing since I got the computer for free. Only down side is that I'm running out of hard drive space so I'll have to buy another one soon. I highly recommend a home media/backup server. Right now the main way I get to my videos and music is via a web interface I wrote in php which basically just scans through the directories and searches for playable files. Using this method I've been able to get access to my media from any device I might happen to need it on, and with chromecast I've been able to easily play everything to my TV with only a bit of extra hardware (the chromecast). :D
just got one, due to the fact that my main rig has a 1070 and i7 and uses 450watts
0:00 "so I just had a brute squeeze from the last veeevo i maake"
I'm not understanding the words coming out of your mouth.
ARE YOU UNDERSTANDING THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUTTA MY MOUTH
What did you say?
Theoretically you could, how good the performance would be might be questionable even with a Gigabit network. Its not something I'd recommend. You'd be better off adding a hard drive to your main machine
Servers are awesome for stuff like this you can also host minecraft and other game servers on this as well
They're not that bad. You can run a Minecraft server easily on some old Dell/HP OEM machine with a Pentium 4. If you want to run multiple things at the same time ESXi and a beasty machine is a must but that can be expensive.
an old windows 7 pro Toshiba is not bad for running a server on it don't even need a operating system like windows home server, You will need a windows pro operating system though to get remote desktop.
You can use Linux and either SSH into the server or use TeamViewer in a GUI
Linux did not work we tried it but windows 7 pro does everything we need it to
Depends what you're trying to do but with TeamViewer on Linux now unless you need AD support Windows is kinda pointless for Minecraft etc...
That was a slip of the tongue, I meant to say 'redundancy' but either way I couldn't do RAID or backup with my current setup due to the amount of drives I have (or lack thereof)
i accept the challenge , i watched this video on 2x speed
*** Chinese level ***
Seeing all these comments.. I just want to say that i like the format of talking faster the 5 words per minute.. :D The only thing i did not understand was @ 00:03
I kinda spilt water on it and even after fully taking it to bits and drying out the space bar is a bit iffy, I might have to replace it.
I don't see how people don't understand him. Maybe it's because i'm also from the uk.
oh yeah, I've heard about that. I'm not fussed too much to go ahead with it. I'm going to get a new server and fill it full of drives and RAID it from the start and transfer all my stuff over
great video, very clear!
A quid is another word for a pound right?
+nappybiscuit
I believe they use kilograms instead of pounds bro
+Incredible Zorro Pound is their currency, quid is another name for pound.
Jesse Yarbough you talk about us like we are another species. Great British pound is our currency and yes quid is another word for pound.
Love this very interesting just thought it would be better to go old school and go with a SUN FIRE V880 file server unit which would need the laptop to bring the server up but that should not be problematic and any many companies upgrade to better systems every so often.
How are you saving power? Serves use way more power then newer computers especially when old
I don't see why people cant understand him... I can understand him no problem.
Thank you for this video. Exactly what I was looking for.
Just have one drive for the kids to access and the rest are drives for the adults, work or play... kids can only access the kids drive and are unable to access the adults drives...
have your own nas you can play lan games with friends local at one place have fun or 4 users can see 4 diffrent content someone see movie at same time someone play game or play music . diffrent devices
Yeah, I did think that. Might have a play with that
i understand 40% of what you say
No problem. BTW Take a look at unRAID (propriety) it's a nice and easy way to expand a linear raid set without having to rebuild it.
Azzy, have you ever thought of switching your server to a linux distro and use ZFS in a raid? A bit of a learning curve but much more secure and ZFS auto corrects errors that can cause corruption.
The simple answer on why people should get a home server is easy and that it because it is very comfortable. Why waste a couple of hours in simply finding data when you can do it in just a few clicks on the mouse? This is simply the most efficient way of getting the job done.
So get a server basically if ur bored and u got money laying around ._.
I run Active Directory at home. It works so much better. Don't get ripped off with Microsoft and their limitations with their home software. Always go for the professional and enterprise end when you are using Microsoft software. Or use a different operating system (If you even know how to use it).
Did you pay for the Enterprise edition? Bit like saying always buy a Ferrari if buying cars because it goes faster. As the PRICE is the reason people buy the Home Editions.
Nihal Jude WHS does what I need it to do without having to setup 2012 for instance. Smaller footprint with the Windows Server backbone to back it up in terms of reliability.
***** I got it via TechNet but even so a full server OS would be a waste of time and money to setup etc...
I agree for a full system. I use spare server for testing call center software and running MySQL Databases
You got to love the British
thanks
he's speaking fine.
Hey AzzyChill,
I was interested in getting a home server. My computers have Windows 7, they are used by both friends and family. There are many benefits of a home server such as management, sharing (like media folder), and getting hard drives out of main computer. Windows Server 2008 R2 maybe good, isn't Server 2012 designed more for Windows 8? My network would be a home network, so it would be a small network. If I was to buy a home server (lowest possible budget), what would you recommend and why?
Speaks fine
Dell Professional P2411H's really good monitors
can i use a home server to store and play my steam games from it
MERCENARY VII yes
window 8 is much better for touch screen but its not all that bad though i find it quite convenient
I've got 2 x Dell P2411H's and a Samsung S24B300HL
Great video,
I've not checked your others so you could well have answered my question elsewhere but either way here it is:
I am pretty much where you were before making this video, ie, everything is on my main computer, but I want to get it off.
After a bit of youtubing, where I started off looking at NAS options, I ended up looking at this option.
Its as good as 2015, nearly 3 years after you made this.
What would you recommend I do/purchase now?
What is your current set up now?
cheers
RandomMusings still the same as then, HP Microserver. They go really cheap sometimes
we've got the same keyboard
Damn it dude! what are you saying exactly?
how do you choose/ how to upload what you want the server to run?? Like if you wanted to run a minecraft server, how would you put it up on the server?
Jacob Peterson I think you need to Google some things before installing anything onto a server. You just need to know how to install an operating system
AzzyChill ok cool
Chocolate express sandwiches you say?
Hi could you please do a video on how you share the server files to your desktop, i just got a dell server and i dont know how to
Thanks!
8 terabit? Wow
I'm weird a made a domain server with zentalyal server even thought I have 2 laptops
What is this state an central hin, how can i do it on my own ??
I like your shirt lol
Alex Berry lol, thanks
Needless to say, I still dont know why to get a homeserver.
Awesome Video! nice one dude, thats my mind made up!
Is servers better than desktop when it comes on downloading stuff, like file sharing?
You can not be serious
*face desk*
Can I use my old computer ( Pentium 4 3.0 GHZ, 512 Ram, 100 GB hard drive) as a homeserver?
Paul Servier I would think so, just maybe not a Windows Server. Would be perfect with a Linux distro
Use it. I use a old optiplex as a test server for hacking and what not. You would be surprised.
I agree with the maker of this video a media server is a MUST at home!
My setup
2 -supermicro servers running VMware ESXI
Supermicro board
2 - Intel Xeon 2.66ghz
64gb RAM
Dell power connect 2824 24 port managed/unmanaged gigabit switch
Dell cloud server
2 - AMD octacore 2.4ghz
32gb ram
2 PERC 6/i raid cards (handles 2tb)
12 drive bays
On a raid 5
Server 2012 r2 datacenter installed for ISCSI storage for my VM data stores
And TONS of different virtual machines with a variety of OS's
A VPN server to manage my network away from home
Have domain controller setup in a VM
Have another server dedicated to tversity (media server) with my mapped drive where my movies sit at
And of course have to have the NO IP account setup so I can watch my movies or listen to music anywhere I go!!
I love it!!!
I am in the process of creating a VPN route to a friends house using server 2012 r2 VPN role it has so we can move files across our networks with ease.
Hit me up if you have questions or want some help and or need servers. Have a real good place where I get mine. Got my Dell cloud server for 150 bucks and it was never used brand new in box for 200 bucks USD granted it's about 2-4 years old but runs like a champ.
Using AnyDVD
can you install your steam and origin games on a nas?
wait can you say it again?
That's an awesome cup, where did you get it?
I beg to difer I just ran it for a month the UI is ok even stylish but i just didn't like it I programme for a living and it just seemed like bloated spyware, but I'm probably a litle linux bast as well...
Just check his alcohol levels ....he looks like drunked.....lool
nice vid i have a hp n40l as a htpc best ever.
David Caisley HP Microservers are amazing
AzzyChill do you use any android tv boxes with xbmc to grap you media and send it to another room to watch ?
I use Boxee via a Raspberry Pi David Caisley
AzzyChill you find the ui is quick. i have a Raspberry Pi with xbmc now collecting dust. i find the us is slow when flicking through tvshow from my server and movies and quite alot of lag going form menu to menu.
David Caisley I had to use a USB3 drive and the 512MB version of the Pi to get it to be any good for speed or menus etc...
I have a question, I have this support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-MediaSmart-Servers/3969714/model/3969716/
Could I use this to put a 7 Days to Die server on it and have it 24/7? Sort of like hosting companies do where you buy a server and it is 24/7 and you can get remote access. Do you know how I could do that with my homeserver?
spartan117m15 in theory you could but I'd get a HP Microserver and not a NAS for this purpose
+spartan117m15 You can use anything to host shit.
You could even use your PC.
1 ) Get Linux
2 ) Check 7DtD wiki for info on how to set up a dedi server.
great video very helpful,
Hey Man
Thanks for the video
Great bit of Info here.
SUBED!
And I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING YOU SAY.
lol
+Korbin O8 yay, at least someone does
It sounds a lot like English. I wonder what he's actually saying.
Interesting video - thanks. What OS do you run on the micro server ?
Windows Home Server
Sorry to break this to you but " RAID is not a backup solution ".
Hi man! Sorry to bother you again, but I dont have a friend that has knowledge in the topic nor anybody known. Could you give me an advice with this? Which processors would you choose for gaming; an AMD FX-8320 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.0GHz Turbo) or an Intel Core i5-4460 Haswell Quad-Core 3.2GHz ? I'm from south america and i7 processors are quite expensive. I'm looking for an alternative.
Paul Servier the i5 would do the job and so would the AMD but if you're doing video editing etc...an Intel would be better. All comes down to choice and cost really
What did he say? Is this what techies on meth and too much coffee sound like?
+Tec 9 just what brits with a decent career sound like
7 minutes of my life down the drain.
why use Windows 8?
Is this is English........?
can u still use the beta windows 8
Nope
Because Windows 8 is amazing
no
Could you use this with putty?
+Slobbery Wolf gaming yep
Noob here looking to build a sever. Is it possible to share video storage with my wifi smart tv, also I have another question, is it possible for a sever to do video rendering, I need something that renders in 4k and my PC hates rendering its a gaming PC and she gets new parts each year but she hates to render and play games at the same time.
TACTICSx ECHO literally anything can be a server including a PC so you could create a rendering server that does just that but you'd be racking up electric bills pretty fast
AzzyChill It needs to be on all the time and use little power, I am just trying to avoid buying 3 GTX 980's, I don't wanna spend money I don't have but it looks like that's my only option as of now
TACTICSx ECHO if you want to render in 4k you've not got much option tbh
Well I can render with my MSI OC R9 290x's fine, but I do not want it to interfere with my gaming performance wise, it takes around a 1day to render. So Ideally I do not want another PC, I want something that I can send my files to at work, or wherever and do my rendering it needs to be always on and script to do jobs I send over
TACTICSx ECHO you could get a Gigabyte Brix. It'd take ages to render things out but it's tiny and pretty powerful
How do you rip DVD's??
i don`t understand you
So mainly a server is to hide porn?
Samson CO1U
ok
Is That English?? LOL
with your server set up, what cross platform software did you use to enable access to the files?
Michael MacShane I use Air Video on Windows Home Server. It's pretty cool
