    Shirley Booth was absolutely brilliant in Come Back, Little Sheba. If there was ever a runaway vote, this had to be it.

    Really hope you can make a long documentary about 1953’s Oscar best actress. No only because it’s the only time Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were both nominated for best actress but also for the fact that this is such a forgotten year in Oscar history. I love all your documentaries about the Oscar best actress awards, as they really tell us about what Hollywood valued in women throughout its history.

    I absolutely love the fact that Shirley Booth lopped off something like 12 years of her age - and got away with it!

    I never realized Shirley Booth was a serious actress. Born in 56 i remember her as Hazel- a character my mom would always remind us she was not.

    She was really heartbreaking in this role. The fact that Burt Lancaster played her husband though - really poor casing choice, but I don't think Shirley was a big enough box office draw to carry the movie herself.

      The Beverly Hills Have Eyes: Burt Lancaster, in order to expand his acting opportunities, searched for dramatic roles that could be produced by his production company (THE ROSE TATTOO) was the other. Due to the difficulties or the roles, and the unglamorousness, the original stage actresses were offered the roles when the films were made. Both Shirley Booth and Anna Magnani won Oscars. Later stage triumphs for Booth were filmed with Katherine Hepburn. But Shirley Booth was a real talent in comedies, dramas and musicals; she was superb. Hepburn, not much of a singer in COCO. Although it does seem that Susan Hayward got the biggest applause.

      You're right about Burt Lancaster. He was too young and healthy looking to play Doc.

    Considered one of the top 5 best actress wins. Booth is absolutely brilliant in this role. The other nominees should’ve stayed home lol. I think everyone else but Davis showed up. Joan was part of a past winners presentation and predicted a Booth win. Duh?

    I adore all these actresses except Joan Crawford! Shirley Booth gave one of the top 5 greatest performances in movie history in Sheba imo. Id have Julie Harris second in the run❤❤

    I am a serious Bette Davis fan and I LOATHE the movie The Star. Shirley Booth always seems to be playing the same person though everyone hates me when I say that. Julie Harris portraying a 12 year old tall and rangy and awkward girl.... still blows me away.

      @poetcomic I've watch the old television comedy 'Hazel' for years, and I see ZERO connections between the happy go lucky maid she portrayed in that comedy series to the desperately lonely, beaten down but forever hopeful woman she brilliantly portrayed in 'Come Back Little Sheba.' By the way, Booth's performance in that classic film is still considered to be one of the ten best Oscar winning performances by an actress, in the history of American cinema.

      @@shirleypena4133 Hazel was a 'character', scripted with mannerisms and punchlines and all kinds of charm.
      It was hardly a 'stretch'.

    • @FritzandtheOscars
      @FritzandtheOscars  Год назад +1

      This happened I think from 1950 to 1956 because so many of the nominees came from Broadway and worked on Oscar night and couldn't attend the show in LA

    What a line up of lady actresses, all of them could have won but Susan Hayward deserved the Oscar slightly more, her performance in With a Song in my Heart is Epic !!!!!

      DVIs admired Crawford as an actress, not as a costar or person. There would have been seats left but NO ONE CAN TOUCH DAVIS IN “ALL ABOUT EVE”.
