When you think about it, we had the only fun growing up (the 70s). The '60s was a struggle, and the '80s had crack and HIV. I feel blessed to have spent all my teenage years during this era.
In high school all the boys loved nice wholesome girl groups like " Sister Sledge, High Energy, and the Jones Girls. It was 1978 and 1979 and everything felt right in the African-American community. I am now a school teacher in the city of Milwaukee and the girl rappers are anything but wholesome .They rap about "poping thier virginal walls". The girls emulate this behavior our black communities are in total shock. God help us, bring back the wholesome girl groups please.
It's all over the White Communities, also. I'm from Italy and although it is significantly less, and the Italian girls still aspire to be THE most Beautiful women on earth. I'm married to one. What great memories this beautiful song has. I had a crush on Kathy as a teenager in the 70's and funny that its still there. We are family was one of the best girl group albums of all time. My favorite song from their classic LP was "Easy to Love". The sweeping strings set that unreleased "should have been classic" song off along with the girls soothing vocals.
I had the Great Honor to be the opening act for Sister Sledge here in Rhode Island back in 2005 at Lincoln Greyhound Park, now Twin Rivers Casino. Such Great Voices, Personalities and, so Very Humble!!!
Growing up in a home with a parent who at the time was an active participant in the music industry (my mother was the original lead singer for 70's funk trio Stargard before they released with Janice as lead singer) you'd think I'd know this song lol. For some reason though I don't, but then I only remember "Greatest Dancer" & "Family". I own what I believe is their Greatest Hits album & maybe a year or so ago just got turned onto "Mama Never Told Me" & "Lost In Music" just a few days ago & I've loved both since first hearing them. Now I too love this song as well. Even as a child 4-5 yrs old in 1979, I always loved the style & rasp of Kathy's vocal. Their sound & stunning beauty, is TIMELESS!

Growing up in a home with a parent who at the time was an active participant in the music industry (my mother was the original lead singer for 70's funk trio Stargard before they released with Janice as lead singer) you'd think I'd know this song lol. For some reason though I don't, but then I only remember "Greatest Dancer" & "Family". I own what I believe is their Greatest Hits album & maybe a year or so ago just got turned onto "Mama Never Told Me" & "Lost In Music" just a few days ago & I've loved both since first hearing them. Now I too love this song as well. Even as a child 4-5 yrs old in 1979, I always loved the style & rasp of Kathy's vocal. Their sound & stunning beauty, is TIMELESS!
One thing these girls did was combines sexy AND classy. Many girl groups since thenhave managed to be one or the other, but none have done both at the same time better than they did. Cathy still looks fab todays and still has that beaming smile.
