David Byrne is such a creative genius with a great ability to assimilate and bring together in a new way many influences. There is a sense of great wonder at his approach and a wide berth to his imagination. This makes his performance/ creations/ discoveries feel so alive and feel as if they become our discoveries too. 💙
Thank you for sharing this TimesTalk. I have been a fan of David's for many years... so when the tickets for American Utopia went on sale in the DFW area I bought tickets to both shows.... was kinda thinking I was crazy... until I saw the show the first time. Then I was so so glad to have bought tickets to see the show twice. It was so different than all other live shows I have seen.... and frankly just what I expected from David Byrne. The man is creative... all along he has stretched music and performance into areas it has not been before. If you didn't see the tour then yes..... I suggest you see the show on Broadway. You will not regret it. And from interviews such as this and from watching & reading his "Reasons to be Cheerful" I have more insight into him as a person. He travels with a bicycle, what more can you say. Awesome.
The interviewer doesn't understand the nature of performance art. He keeps using 'authentic' as if it meant personal and diary-like. The performance itself has to be authentic to its subject-matter. Paul Simon isn't Jamaican or African, but the music he makes is an authentic expression of that cultural tradition. A person who isn't French may learn to speak French as it is really spoken in France, and use ideas authentic to the French way of thinking. That's authenticity. It's a combination of accuracy and truth-to-the-spirit. You don't have to reduce your world to just yourself.
Does he ask him why the musicians in American Utopia all where grey suits? I sort of understand making them equal, but not making the clothing bland. Some color in the suits would have been better.
the focus is on what they are doing, not what they are or what they carry ... with clothes of other colors the sense of unity, of a large and unique organism, anything else would be a distraction ... And it translated very well for both theater and film.

Questions from the audience usually means it’s time to switch off…
