King needs to read this comment. It's not that the players or umpires don't know the rules or guidelines, that's impossible when the AFL changes the interpretations nearly every week based on one or two incidents. The real problem, and one that can't be fixed, is that the players don't know what the umpires are going to call. They're too unpredictable. The officials don't always pay/ not pay decisions correct to the interpretation. The players are confused, as are fans, becasue the umpires pay what they shouldn't pay, and don't pay what they should pay on a consistent basis. It will never be fixed.
The quality of umpiring will only stay the same or get worse. They only way to improve anything is to replace them with AI or technology. But they're humans and we're supposed to accept that umpires consistently, and always will alter games with incorrect decisions.
    That's Australian Football

I can't think of another sport in the world where the rules are so loose. Other sports have too much respect for the sport to tolerate this nonsense. yeah its a unique sport but the afl have been messing around too much and made it as hard as possible for players and umps. For me, go back to the original rules as much as makes sense. Simple stuff, and the rough conduct stuff stays to look after the players. One eg. The standing the mark rule, who would be upset if we scrapped it? Not needed, the game is fast enough. No ambiguity needed in rules

At that point in the game in the 3rd quarter the free kicks were 10-4 in essendons favour. It felt like the umpires were trying to even the free kick count up, the draper situation happened and then Geelong got seven consecutive free kicks in a row (that were rubbish calls) about 3 resulting directly in goals (including the menzie rushed behind) and essendon had about 5 or 6 obvious free kicks that weren't called 3 of which were inside essendons forward fifty. Draper's chopping of the arms and two obvious holding the balls directly in front of goal on separate occasions. If the 3rd quarter was umpired with no bias, the bombers could have easily been 1 or 2 goals up at 3 quarter time instead of 3 goals down. Worst quarter of umpiring I've ever seen, legit.

AFL needs to make umpiring a full time job. These blokes are coming off 9-5 jobs and are expected to make razor sharp decisions on gameday; all on the back of a stressful working week. Momentum is hard no doubt BUT if Essendon cant compete and get back regardless then thats on them and they lose. Simple.
Port got crucified in 1st half against Hawks and they got a hefty lead. It was something like 15 to 4 frees hawks way at the half and port without just one free in a whole quarter. Guess what? Port fought back and took it on and won. Port play the cats at geelong and dominated but cat's started clawing back. Port held on.
Pies yes with umpires no doubt clawed back and beat north after being smashed.
Essendon and supporters can whine all day long about alleged unpiring calls that gave cats the "Momentum" however frees were fairly tied and bombers got the umps in 1st half obviously. Deny that and youre delusional. However, bombers just werent good enough to fight back.
Get over it. Bombers have had an extremely easy draw overall and are lucky. Yes. A decent side but very lucky to be in top 8.
