Man what a great year for metal albums, nice list! Testament's "The Formation of Damnation", Scar Symmetry's "Holographic Universe" and Metallica's "Death Magnetic" were also awesome that year.
Triple M I came across your comment just when I have been re obsessing over Holographic Universe. absolutely gorgeous.
I know, right? That album just strikes a chord with me, the title track in particular. But the whole thing is just a piece of art. I just wish Christian Älvestam stayed with the band... (although Solution .45 also put out some great shit with him).
Hello metallica live show man.
1.) Love the list and all of these albums.
2.) Shogun is a masterpiece.
3.) If Eluveitie was a more popular band, Slania may have made this list?
The Way of All Flesh is EASILY 5/5 - that album defined my teenage years. Still my favourite Gojira album and still hasn't been topped imo.
Albums I also liked in that year...
1. Heaven Shall Burn: Iconoclast
2. Arsis: We Are the Nightmare
3. Abysmal Dawn: Programmed to Consume
4. Whitechapel: This is Exile
5. Norma Jean: Antimother
6. All Shall Perish: Awaken the Dreamers
7. Bleeding Through: Declaration
8. Six Feet Under: Death Rituals
Thanks a lot guys, I really dig this format. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the albums we missed episode, I really wanna know what the banger family thinks of the new rivers of nihil.
new rivers of nihil slays
Hell yeah it does! It's still the #1 album of the year so far
Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery
HELL YEAH!
Probably thier worst record
Seems like Sweden ruled in 2008.
Like most years
yeah Swedes produce some sweet music
Hank Hill you're right at that swedish metal is great.
King Diamond/Mercyful Fate are originally Danish, though there have been quite few Swedes playing in those bands over the years. I'd also add Opeth, Katatonia, Edge Of Sanity, Soilwork, Meshuggah, Therion to the list.
Anton Tati The real question is when has Sweden NOT ruled?
Deeds of Flesh-Of What's to Come. I understand when it comes to Deeds people prefer their earlier work but, I think their whole discography is worthy.
AGREED
MetalBrent124 Deeds is super underrated their one of the Techdeath greats in my opinion
Dimmumon08 glad I'm not the only one \m/
ObZen was my favorite release of 2008.
as an old French metal veteran .stoked to see the mighty GOJIRA topping this .Glad to see Meshuggah in there too .Bloodstock here i come !! Ça va saigner les petits graisseux !!
This was the first rewind where it feels like the presenter actually spent time listening to these albums and making a concerted effort to dissect & review these albums in full, rather than just fly through the records slapping 5 skulls on them all. Well done brad.
Shogun and Watershed desereved a 4 at the very least!
Watershed is my 3rd favourite album of all time.. But he is a hardcore kind of guy and i respect that! It’s just nor his cup of tea
yep should be a 5
Fuck Yeah!!! Opeth is one of my all time top five of all time and I'm almost 50 so I've listened to a lot of different kinds of music in my time... Watershed is very underrated album of Opeth... but always a unique(freaking beautiful)blend of prog and death metal period.
My list would be
1) Trivium - Shogun
2) The Faceless - Planetary Duality
3) Opeth - Watershed
4) Gojira - The Way of all Flesh
5) Cynic - Traced in air
As a bonus the best thing that came out in 2008 unrelated to metal/music is the first Dead Space. Bada bing bada boom.
Ben McIntyre Touche'
Also Fallout 3. And my first (and so far only) time at Wacken (with the most killer line-up ever).
What a year 2008 was. Opeth, Meshuggah and Gojira coming with killer albums in the same year.
Akerfeldt's best death metal vocal performance is on the 1st Bloodbath album. Song 'Ways To The Grave' is sick. Misha(Periphery) are inspired by Meshuggah but he was sending around guitar demos before ObZen.
I'm actually surprised The Blackening by Machine Head didn't even make the top 10. That's arguably their best album. Also, an album I wish would've made it, but didn't expect it to anyway was Scar Symmetry's Holographic Universe. If you haven't heard it check it out. Exceptional melodeath.
David King that album is came out in 2007 not 2008 that's why.
Oyunların Adamı so it did. Weird. I wonder why I thought it came out in 08. Oh well.
David King don't worry in one moment i also think it's came out in 2006 lol.
David King yes i agree on MH
Oh man, Shogun is already over 10 years old ? I was excited to get it the time it got out and at first, i was disapointed. But after hearing it a few times, it grew on me and i still like it. To me, one of their best work till today, if not the best.
Gojira is one of the two main bands that brought me into liking more extreme metal. At that time I was listening to stuff like a lot of alternative rock, a few heavy metal songs, a bit of power metal and quite a lot of metalcore.
Then I accidently stumbled across the song The Art Of Dying. Never heard something that brutal, that beautiful and that amazing before. I listened to a lot more of them and I loved everything.
I'm a big Gojira fan and personally I think that TAOD is one of their weakest offerings. It's a good album but a bit boring. Much more into The Link, From Mars, L 'Enfant and even Magma.
@@carlosjantarada7212 the art of dying isn't the album mate. It's the way of all flesh. And it's arguably their best next to FMTS, but that's just my opinion
Oi I am a SocDem I can't split "From Mars. ." or "The Way. .". Easily their best two albums. I can't wait to hear their next album. Did you watch their show from Poland? I think that will be their next release.
I actually think L' Enfant and Magma are the worst albums they've made. They're not bad but they're not as interesting as The Link, From Mars and The Art of Dying. I think The Art of Dying is a bit boring and repetitive but the song writing is much better than their last two albums which I think are much more boring and repetitive.
Kampfar- Heimgang
Helheim- kaoskult
Eluveitie- slania
Amon Amarth- twilight...
Gojira - way of all flesh
That's my picks
Brad I really enjoy your approach to these lists. Keep up the good work with the rest of the Bangers! 🤘
Thank you so much for your kind words!
I love Opeth's 'Watershed'. I had to tap out after 'Heritage' though as they were moving more into the proggy/folky side of things, that lost me. However, in 2010 they released one of my favorite live albums ever in 'In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall'. Live is where Opeth excel to me and this is great(get the CD/DVD set).
I've always wondered what Brad's first 5/5 would be, and it didn't disappoint! Still pretty happy you don't give them out to every album too.
the Fathomless Mastery is an absolute beast of an album
These comments are hilarious, people meantioning a bunch of unknown metal bands that only they and their close circlejerk of friends listen to. On a global scale this list is alright. Don't be the stereotypical metal fan, kids.
Whitechapel, Septicflesh, Judas Priest, Death Angel, Motorhead, DragonForce are unknown?
scroll down the comments to see what he means, the guy got a valid point
@@MoSweiti666 whitechapel sucks and 3 of those other bands are seriously gay
Instead of checking out those albums you go ahead and not only showcase your ignorance but actually make a stance for it and belittle people that truely love the music and actually know their metal. Seriously, take a seat.
Way to go man.
@@norgepalm7315 I bet you can count your braincells on the fingers of one hand.
No mention of Dead Congregation "Graves of the Archangels", but wasn't expecting it as I randomly clicked this video, since it's too underground in this context, nevertheless one of the best Death Metal records of the past decade.
Dude HELL YEAH, band rules.
I just love your reviews brad.
StyxHitlerHammer 10.2 no i am not
I was expecting Septicflesh - Communion!! Im sad!
David Pissarro It was the best metal release from that year, regardless of genre. Still listen to it fairly regularly.
Me too :(
that was a great one for sure
First album I heard from them. Was hooked immediately.
Too obscure for them.
Thanks for the video, really enjoying these.. Also kudos for your objectivity... For me it was Shogun this year :)
I tried looking for Dylan's Bleed cover and found his channel and good lord that dude is great.
I'm sad that The Sword's Gods of the Earth didn't even get a mention. Check it out if you love classic, 70's era heavy metal.
Professor Fuzzymuffins Yes! An excellent album to be sure!
Professor Fuzzymuffins hipster garbage
The Sword is hipster garbage?
Professor Fuzzymuffins yo! I fucking love that album
trash wannabe 70's album
There was a lot of great metal that year. I was also enjoying Nachtmystium's Assassins 1, Omnium Gatherum's The Redshift, Scar Symmetry's holographic Universe and Becoming The Archetype's Dichotomy.
Hell yeah. Good picks! Thank you for watching.
Shogun is probably their best album and you give them 3,5 :D
Actually, I think their latest is their best. My stance on it has softened since I first did the review, and it's definitely better than I gave it credit for. Alas, such is the problem with reviewing albums.
Good call on mentioning Cursed. Hell of a swan song imo. I'd also throw in Trap Them-Seizures in Barren Praise as an honorable mention.
So godamn happy to see Trivium and Gojira here. Though Dir En Grey's Uroboros was a masterpiece from that year as well.
Nice to see someone mention Uroboros. That’s probably my personal favorite from 2008.
Uroboros was so phenomenal! But I knew there wasn't a chance in hell it'd be on here. Oh well, so many people missing out!
@Mark 13 why lol
Great reviews. Thanks, Brad.
Opeth is a brilliant band and this was a brilliant album.
For me Testament but what do i know
you have high taste my man
Yes. Testament gets snubbed every time. The New Order didn't make the 1988 list :(
meteor09 but it's make 1987 list with the legacy.
True True. But New Order!!
Testament's album blows away any on this "list"
Bradley you’ve done another fine job. These style of videos are cool from the community engagement side, and it’s interesting to see what you reviewers think of the stuff we were listing to back in the day. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next!
FUCK YEAH, SHOGUN!
The Horror Guru hi guru! How are ya?
No traced in air, bleh
Psycho Surfer I was just thinking that. Traced in air never gets old !
true. Leaving one of the best metal albums of all times out of 08's top 5 albums is just another symptom that something is reaaaaaaaaaaaaally wrong with voting choices nowadays.
Watershed and The Way of all flesh are 5/5 in my book.
Between the trio of Bloodbath albums, Amon Amarth, Nachtmystium, Arsis and Opeth releases, 2008 was a busy year for my ears.
1.Enforcer - Into The Night
2.Kissin' Dynamite-Steel Of Swabia
3.Dargoron-Raskrsce snova
4.Carach Angren-Lammendam
5.Sabaton-The Art of War
I think this list marks what I always felt happened in 08
2008 was the year The Progressive Realm truly exploded
Gojira, Meshuggah, Opeth and others exploded into the mainstream after years of moderate Success and acclaim throughout the late 90’s and early 00’s off bulletproof back catalogues
It was this combined with the upsurge of under ground shit around the 07-10 mark like periphery and AAL and also I could already tell people were getting sick of straight Core genres and adding the technical or progressive edge is what made the scene so vibrant again
This whole decade of Prog mania we’ve just had was all thanks to how much shit broke out at the end of the 00’s
SLEEP IS BACK
Heavy Metal Heretic of course it's 420!
Heavy Metal Heretic the important issues come out
twilight of the thunder god may be 5th in this list, but it will always be number 1 in our hearts
Does After the Burial’s Berzerker qualify? It was a re-release in 2008, and if it counts it’d definitely be in my top 5
The new vocalist was more dynamic, for sure, but I preferred the original vocals for that album. I'm glad they had the new guy moving forward, though.
So to summarize... 2008 what a great year for metal from Sweden!
SWEDEN RULES!
Holy gaaaawd you reminded me of Bleeding Through’s Declaration
Forgot all about it !!!! Thank you
Dead Congregation - Graves of the Archangels
I completely forgot about this album at poll time, but I would say my favorite album of 2008 is “This Grand Show” by Grayceon. It’s unique, it’s their peak, it’s mellow and it blasts. Highly suggested.
Sylosis - Conclusion of an age. That band makes me fall in love in metal genre, besides Slayer
Can we PLEASE get Dylan Gowan as a regular?! Fuck the intern status...I saw this dude do two minutes of impromptu analysis/explanation and I was sold. I want to hear his opinions on music.
"Brad, you're out...hit the showers...Dylan...you're in."
I need a shower, to be honest...
Acid Witch, Dismember, Gama Bomb, Unleashed and Testament put out my favorite albums of 2008.
This guy has some good taste. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, sir! \m/
Last opeth death metal record...
I think those are best for 2008 albums
Toxic Holocaust - An Overdose Of Death
Tankard - Thirst
Blaze Bayley - he Man Who Would Not Die
Torture Squad - HellBound
Warbringer - War Without End
Arsis - We Are The Nightmare
Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge
Lord Vicar - Fear No Pain
Enforcer - Into the Night
EXCITER - Thrash Speed Burn
Gojira - The Way of All Flesh
Bullet For My Valentine - Waking The Demon
deads of flesh of whats to come!!!!
*Deeds
I voted for The Way Of All Flesh, but holy shit was I glad to see Shogun on here. It is my favorite album of all time. I voted for TWOAF because I think it does an overall better job as a whole album.
Darkthrone - Dark Thrones And Black Flags
Enforcer - Into The Night
Portrait - Portrait
Grand Magus - Iron Will
Judas Priest - Nostradamus
Dismember - Dismember
Tiamat - Amenethes
Motörhead - Motörizer
Testament - Formation Of Damnation
Metallica - Death Magnetic
Twilight was a great album...but Surtur Rising and the solo tour where they played a set plus 2nd set with of all of Surtur; always nice when a band can keep playing and I don't want em' to stop.
Hey Canadians. Obviously loads of cool stuff from Canada that most people haven't heard of. One of the best gig I've ever seen was NOMEANSNO. Are they a band that qualifies for Bangertv?
Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery is still in constant rotation.
Such a sick album. I got some special edition CD when it first dropped.
Hades Rising is a death metal masterpiece
Oh fuck yeah
Great list, Gojira and Meshuggah dropped the best that year, indeed.
Hell yeah, so sick.
Septicflesh dropped the best that year.
I was expecting to see Shogun right here, and wasn't disappointed!
I'm actually surprised it wasn't higher on the list.
BirdsElopeWithTheSun atleast be happy that they made to top 5. I was worried that they wouldn't even make it because of all the elitists on this channel.
Plasfaria Blarka Anisa not everyone is like them not everyone is trolls who ruin the fun.
StyxHitlerHammer 10.2 i don't think i am a poser.
StyxHitlerHammer 10.2 Dude everyone single one of your comments ive seen, has been you calling people posers. Get a fucking life and stop bagging on other people's tastes.
2008 was a big year for movies and metal! I wish i can go back in time to experience it again.
Allageaon EP......Testament-The Formation Of Damnation................Soulfly-Conquer...........Gojira-The Way Of All Flesh......Revocation-Empire Of The Obscene
Jeremy Freeman the soulfly album's name is conquer not omen that is came out in 2010.
Yep I realized that after I looked at my 2008 list of albums. So Conquer is on the list now. ;o)
I have no objection to this list. I think I'd put Testament in over Trivium, but that's minor as Shogun is my favorite Trivium album. Gojira was a wise choice 🤘
On a similar note, I would have replaced trivium with bloodbath. But fairly satisfied with the list.
Was expecting to see cavalera conspiracy-inflikted :(
So why does Shogun sound dated? I wish he would of went more in depth on that.
Yeah, I didn’t get that either. The production on that record sounds crisp and clear; it still sounds fresh to my ears. Maybe he meant the musical style.
Yeah i didn't get that at all. Shogun's production is crisp perfect to me and tbh sounds better than most albums now. Ahead of its time maybe?
This dude only really cares about bands that have names that you can't read
I didn't understand that either. Shogun is a near perfect album. Still listening to it on a daily basis
It sounds like 2000s metalcore, that's why. Duh?
It’s interesting to see the different perspectives of metal during the covered time periods, even if your tastes are slightly different. Props, Brad!
Twilight Of The Thundergod is the SECOND album in their current line of solid albums. Lest we forget With Odin On Our Side which is a FAR SUPERIOR album to TOTTG. Asator. Need I say more?
Joe Rico _I think Surtur Rising kind of exceeds it too_
B Rye Yeah I think you're right. Less filler and more solid start to finish.
Joe Rico _Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed Twilight Of The Thunder God, but Amon Amarth have albums in their collection, exceeding it in my opinion._
My fave is The Faceless- Planetary Duality. Short and to the point, technical but memorable songs and versatile stuff where each song has its own distinct character. Highly recommended to check it out!
That album is great. Shame what's become with the band. I hope Michael gets help.
Aggressive Tendencies I did not even know that until you pointed that out. Yeah it really sucks. Too much talent has been lost to drugs already.
Right? Sigh. It's a shame that governments could be doing so much more to help addicts, but they won't because they can't profit off that. Disgusting.
My top 5:
1. Darkspace
2. Esoteric
3. Leviathan
4. ColdWorld
5. Equilibrium
Before I start watching the video, here are my Top 5 Metal Albums 2008:
5. DARKTHRONE - Dark Thrones And Black Flags / MOURNING BELOVETH - A Disease For The Ages
4. HAIL OF BULLETS - ...Of Frost And War
3. DARK SPACE - III
2. SUNN O))) presents PENTEMPLE
1. MESHUGGAH - ObZen
My Non-Metal Faves 2008:
EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN - The Jewels
&
BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE - Dolores
It's funny that there's so much hate on these comments for this list when the list was chosen by viewer votes! I like this list, even if I don't dig every band on here, and I think this was a great review by Brad as always.
Eric Adams it's not really for you to determine who is and isn't metal fan.
Thanks, Josh! Regardless of what Eric says, I am definitely a fan of metal. I like metal, but I also like other stuff. Sure, I like Underoath and Bleeding Through, but I also like Demigod, Bufihimat, etc.
Oooohhhhh yeaaaahhh!!! GREAT FUCKING LIST!!! We the fans have spoken. We love GOJIRA!!!!!!!
GODZILLAAAAAA!
1. Gojira-The way of all flesh
2. Testament-The formation of damnation
3. Soulfly-Conquer
4. The Sword-Gods of the earth
5. Metallica-Death Magnetic
Gojira, Trivium, Amon Amarth, and Opeth!!!! Fine year 2008 was. Too bad I couldn't process most of the metal because I was only 10 years old.
Fortunately, you can always listen after the fact.
Twilight of the thunder God is a classic in my opinion
Great video, but it could be even better if you did a bit broader overview of metal/core music trends (for that year) in the introduction or in conclusion part of the video.
THIS IS EXILE (Needs an honorable mention)!
Great album. Thanks for watching.
Aggressive Tendencies
With Blood Comes Cleansing and Whitechapel in 2007.
Where do you start? With anything its always the beginning...
coming mainly from a Prog background, I think Opeth is an excellent band. Interesting point there on them using Metal elements in an unconventional way.. I can't really say, but I will pay attention to that
No Ayreon - 01011001, super sad :(
Good list though.
Wow surprised to see an Ayreon comment. Very nice. That album would make my list as well.
This list made me very pissed
I enjoy your reviews a lot better than the guy who thinks he's funny (supposedly a professional comedian). I think its fairly interesting how as you guys go through the years and different people review each year's albums you bring a personal flavor and history, as well as reflect on the albums overall impact - which I think is a good approach and intellectually honest. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Carl!
I just can't believe it's been ten years since Obzen and Watershed have come out, fuck...
The album DICHOTOMY by BECOMING THE ARCHETYPE is a killer death metal album that came out in 2008.
I completely expected Death Magnetic to be number 1. Glad it wasn't, great picks!
Oh and Enforcer - Into the Night
As soon as I hear Vacuity, I headbang. Period. Jesus fucking Christ, that song dominates.
So many good albums out currently that aren’t being reviewed on here
Scar Symmetry's Holographic Universe was top of the list for me. Impeccable album start to finish and a definite 5 star rating.
That album is cool, I remember buying it on a whim!
Fank uuuuuuuuuuuuu!! Just bought Bleeding Through, an album and a band I have missed
Hell yeah!
It seems to me that this list is much more Europe-oriented, both because of the bands and the type of music they play. These are all albums I love, and it was interesting to see that the traditional Metallica, Testament and other Slipknot were left out for a while. Not that I don't like these though. It's also important to remember that the hype for some of these bands was not as high back then as it is nowadays, so it's understandable that some people might have got sick of them now.
"Guardians of Assgard", oh man, I totally cracked up there :D
Best YEAR GTA IV!
Ariel Madman
Seriously though, GTA IV was a great game.
Whereas YOU may have liked that year, a lot of people who had "investments" in the money market kind of didn't. That being said, I liked that year too ... because (as mentioned) the fall of civilization as we knew it at least had an awesome soundtrack.
man brad's review style has really improved a lot recently good job brad you rule :) (not that there was anything wrong with his review style in the first place it just feels more refined)
Thank you very much, Jake. I appreciate the kind words. Shit like that keeps me pushing to do even better!
Aggressive Tendencies no problem mate keep up the good work I really enjoy your reviews your voice overs have got so natural now especially when you compare it to when you started you look a whole lot more comfortable on camera and that's great to see :)
