  • STARGATE UNIVERSE kicked off with an epic 3-part episode, "Air," which found the reluctant crew of the Destiny struggling to survive on a derelict Ancient vessel on the edge of the universe. In the third installment Lt. Matthew Scott (played by actor Brian J. Smith) leads a mission to a desert planet to try and save everyone from asphyxiation.
Smith sat down with "Dial the Gate" host David Read to talk about filming on location in White Sands, New Mexico, and what he remembers from his first day filming on SGU - as well as his last day, on the second-season finale "Gauntlet." He also talks about how the show has stood the test of time, and continues to find its full audience years later.
This clip is from Dial the Gate's full-length, 55-minute conversation with Brian. Watch the full interview here: • 193: Brian J Smith Par...

I understand the SGU criticism, because it was dark and gritty... But there was why I loved it! It was "real". Difficult, people didn't know what was going on and it showed, as much as I love SG1 and SGA, SGU just had that feeling

It’s too bad the ratings were so low because that show was spectacular!

One of the best shows ever. So much potential. I hope they bring back SGU.

I loved sgu. I was happy it was different to sg1 and SGA. Which were basically the same thing. SGU was more gritty and real.

Recently saw him in "Class of '09" on Disney+. Pretty decent show about the FBI developing A.I. With a touch of Minority Report in their. It was primarily notable for essentially focusing on the same characters in three time periods every episode - 2009, 2023 and 2034. And man, some of them were really believable as the same character at different ages.

Yes, SGU needs to be continued, it was my FAVORITE Stargate. I have no idea why it was received so poorly, it was about the most realistic and reasonable, it was freaking AWESOME

StarGate Universe foi, na minha opinião, a melhor de todas as estórias da franquia !
Já assisti várias vezes e sinto muito que não deram um final digno para a estória!
    Parabéns SGU !

Definitely ranked number three for me. SG-1 can’t be beat. RDA for the win, definitely glad he was in all of them.

4:20 Look mr Smith, i'm half sure there may some viewpoint that the director/writers had... but i THINK i get SGU plenty.
It's a soap opera. set in space. in the stargate universe.
I loved it. it was fun to watch and gets my personal seal of approval even if i hate soaps.. which i do.
    that's it.
    It's Stargate: soap opera.
    and i liked it.

I am a big SG1 and SGA fan but SGU was.... I found it like Dawsons Creek in space.
I'm worried about Alien Romulus for the same reason.

I can see the funny side of Eli and Matt both in love with Chloe, but the two were dating each other in real life

i don't think the reason why it was review bombed badly had to do with the reason why it's considered good now, i think the show interested some other new audiences to the franchise because many of the older fans still to this day don't like SGU, some of us Original fans liked SGU despite it's flaws, and at the time we did hope for a better direction for the written show to go.
do you remember when you first watched something that was new to you and the old series was just to hard to get into as a kid, it could have been anything from movies to tv series to video games, but you first played one of these later versions and that was your first interest into the genre and you loved it as you didn't know what it was like from before, but the older fans didn't like the new stuff for whatever reason, well anyway that's how SGU captured new audiences.
now with that said i was one of the OG fans, where i liked all 3 shows, i like SG1 the most, but SGU was good for the kind of show it was being written as, i feel at the time the show was maybe a bit too serious and drama filled, but i also felt like the show had hope to become one of the best shows.

No, man. The show was bad. It was a blatant Battlestar Galactica ripoff. I loved SG1 and SGA, but SGU was crap.
