Make yourself a Tool playlist that includes all their tracks and just listen through, you'll be surprised which ones end up being your favorites. Then, after you slay the beasts that are APC and Puscifer, add them to the playlist: welcome to heaven.

Drew... You should really check out A Perfect Circles Eat The Elephant... Specifically Talk Talk or Hourglass. Hourglass is a much different singing style Maynard hasn't done on any other album, it's kind of an '80's synth-rock-angsty-pop. The whole album is good.

"Pet" + "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums" by A Perfect Circle in one video would be cool.
"Counting" is the band made remix of "Pet". Both are extremely heavy in their own right, and doing them back to back for immediate comparison would make for an awesome vid.

We ain't mad at you, you are experiencing them in a completely different way then we did. If we knew in the early 90s the rest of the albums to come, we would probably look at undertow differently as well. You got to experience them in reverse, to hear what they are capable of, and where they came from. We got to grow with them, and hear what they were to become. The difference for us older heads is we have emotional connections to those earlier albums so they are always going to hold a special place in our hearts. Everyone has a different lens to view life through.

When i got into Tool, Lateralus was my first album, Ænima was my second and that’s all I knew from them for a little while. When I discovered Undertow and Opiate i wasn’t too fond of it. I had to go through multiple listens to really appreciate where they started and how they evolved their sound. I love each album in a different way.

    • @connorsmith377
      @connorsmith377 4 года назад +1

DutchMastah07 I was the same way, Opiate actually grew on me a lot faster than Undertow; when it comes to Tool I either like things super melodic or super aggresive, and Opiate as a whole definitely delivers the most on the aggressive front! Although this record is still great, it’s still easily my most skippable one as while it has decent moments of both melody and aggression, it’s just not quite intense enough in either aspect to satisfy the way the others in their catalog do! That’s just my opinion though

I got into Tool when this album came out, so absorbed the music as they evolved, (and believe me it was a bloody long wait between each release so I had lots to time to absorb it). We had no idea what they would evolve into, they just had something interesting about them that appealed. I fully understand your opinion on this album after coming from their later releases, we have just listened to it from completely different angles. To me, Undertow is the easier way into Tool, it has simpler song structures and was closer to other music that was being release at the time.
Thanks for doing this one Drew, I appreciate your honesty.

Huge love from turkey. We have a good history. In 1847, when Ireland was dealing with 7 years of famine, Sultan Abdulmecid was the only one to help Ireland with at least a hundred ships full of wheat while european countries and england had ignored. Ships went to Dublin first. But Queen Victoria of Britannia obstructed them. Then they went to Drogheda. That is why Drogheda United F.C has a crescent and a star on their amblem representing the turkish flag :)

Was a very different time back then. What you wouldn’t understand is that when Undertow came out there was nothing on the planet that sounded like this. There also was no internet to just skip to the next trending song. So once you heard something that you loved you hung on to it for life and death, read through the booklet for clues on who influenced them than rode your skateboard down to the record store and flicked through everything that got a mention in the booklet.

Great reaction, as always! I think 4 degrees is like one movement of a symphony. Or like listening to only the middle 5 minutes of Pneuma. Or it's like you open the door and inside the room are a bunch of people hypnotized, and you have no idea why they're hypnotized because you missed the magician setting it up. You know what I mean? To be honest, I listened to this album for decades as a cassette tape, and then as two continuous mp3 rips of each side of that cassette, and as such I had only a poor idea of where one track ended and the next began due to the gapless playback. So until Tool released their discography last year to streaming, I never experienced 4 degrees as an individual song. All that to say, I think once you work through the remaining songs on the Undertow album, and then have a chance to go back and listen to the entire album start to finish it will be an entirely different experience, and by the time you reach this song you will be hypnotized and in the middle of typical Tool euphoria.

as you said its very raw tool, and they were still finding their sound back then. almost no one would say undertow is a better album than aenima, lateralus, 10,000 days etc. so don't worry you aren't alone on that. i enjoy it mostly because i try to disconnect it from the rest of their discography and just take it as a cool innovative 90s grunge era album. but of course that music isn't for everyone.

Don't even bother with Disgustipated, the track length is misleading as fuck because it's literally not even an actual song, it's just a roughly 6 1/2 minute spoken word interlude and then after around the 7:00 mark it's literally just crickets chirping for the entire rest of the track. This is a brilliant, honest and sense making opinion from you here, mo chara. I totally get what yer saying. Theres no point in filming yerself going "Man, this is sick. This is great", just cos other reactors online do that, as thats what people want to see. Any long term band- when you listen, love and absorb best the later , career defining albums its amazing. But in some cases, digging up the early early stuff can be a very interesting experience, and sometimes a little underwhelming. I got a copy of the Undertow album a few months after Aenima totally enveloped me- and to be honnest lad, it fell a bit flat with me. Although a lot of the album grew on me- Bottom , Sober, Crawl Away are amazing- I still dont come back to it anywhere as much as their other albums. Im surprised too,at people saying that there wasnt anyting like it at the time. Yes, they totally had a patented, distinctive sound off the bat, that would fantastically flourish to genius at Aenima onwards. But Undertow has a definite early 90s alt metal feel to it aswell that fits in with their peers at the time, like Rollins Band, Soundgarden, Helmet, and some RATM maybe. I can understand how this album isnt hittin as as instantly as the others did,so again the honest opinion is good and grand to hear.
Shur y'know yerself, every song out there gets better with more listens and getting familiar with it, so itl be interesting to see how these songs do when heard again alongside other Tool songs you realy like in a playlist, etc. Great, honest reaction. Sound, bud.

I really enjoy Tool, but can NOT listen to more than one song in a row. My playlist has a Tool song about every 5 songs or so. Their rhythms are so unique, that is what has captured my attention for them. Thanks for doing this one, Drew.

unless i am much mishapen, you appear to have omitted a couple of tunes, which is a pity. when you get majorly into a band, generally the album that makes you fall in love with them tends to remain your favourite, and working backwards from that album will always feel like going backwards. i got into them with aenima, and i felt like this when i heard undertow. it's impossible not to compare, and i tended not to listen to it much. watching live footage on youtube of gigs going right back to the beginning, you understand and appreciate how incredible they were. you know you are in the presence of something really unique in terms of intensity. they are still a great live show, but i feel that the whole ship is still sailing on the torrent of anger pouring from mjk's early performances. i have recently had undertow on in my car and have finally come round to it as the great piece of work that it is. please do the title track undertow, and have the lyrics to see the piece from maynard's perspective. peace.

I'm wish you'd hear the older stuff before the newer. You'd see the progression, the awesomeness. Honestly, Fear Inocolum was "meh" to me. The older albums is what hit me hard. Tool has been my band since high school. 1997

I think you're a little young to really get Tool. I would try the older albums again in 5 years. In 93, no one sounded like this. This was new, and fresh. But like you said, you have their later stuff. But in 5 years you may be able to understand more. Which will affect how you listen to the newer stuff as well.

@paula I was sixteen when Opiate came out, I loved it. But their other albums didn't exist. And there was nothing else like it, at that time. But I didn't really get Tool, till my mid 20's, when lateralis came out. Then I went back and started from the beginning.
