Father MOMOTARO ♂(2000/7/3)
He is hesitant in new situations and is a loner.
His father died before he was born, and he had never spent time with a silverback.
He had already turned into a silverback by the time he was 10 years old.
He is struggling with unfamiliar child-rearing.
MOMOTARO's father is BIJU.
MOMOTARO's mother is MOMOKO
Mother GENKI ♀ (1986/6/24)
She is 14 years older than Momotaro and has a role to support the whole family mentally.
She has had a tumultuous and eventful life.
She has returned to her birthplace, Kyoto City Zoo.
She had never been blessed with a baby but after meeting Momotaro,
she had two sons.
She is a very maternal female gorilla.
GENKI's father is MAKK.
GENKI's mother is HIROMI.
First son GENTARO, male (2011/12/21)
He was separated from his mother Genki soon after he was born.
Genki's milk production was not very good.
He was raised by his keeper for his first10 months.
Because of this, he is very fond of humans.
His face is so expressive, and everyone enjoys watching him.
Second son KINTARO ♂ (2018/12/19)
He is just very strong-willed and independent.
He has big eyes and long eyebrows.
The way he plays a lot with his brother Gentaro makes everyone smile.
We can't wait to see what kind of gorilla he'll become!

Im kind of sad that Gentaro is kind of separating from the family but i know it is normal. I worry about Kintaro the most because he truly loves his big Brother. Yes. When young males get to that age they normally stay on the outskirts of the group. And if they take to long leaving the group, the silverback will force them out.

I very much enjoyed watching Momotaro’s family in their daily activities.
Some people criticize this zoo for the gorillas’ living space, but think of what it takes to care for this species in terms of care and knowledge. They have to consider enrichment, nutrition, veterinary knowledge and an understanding of the mind and well-being of these wonderful animals. When you consider how Gentaro turned out from being hand-reared, I think the zoo has done an excellent job despite their lack of space. The family is happy and healthy, in great condition, not stressed, and seem interested in life. And that is a win.🦍💕💜

I couldn't agree more! This space is all the boys know, being born and raised there! There is no comparing it in their mind! As you said they are happy and healthy! This zoo does a fabulous job !!!!! Aww. Gentaro is a big boy. He can sleep without Momotaro now. I love that he’s such a daddy’s boy but it’s nice to see him growing up. He can still be a daddy’s boy without being so reliant on Momotaro.

When they have just the males live together, it’s called a BACHELOR GROUP. And this is normal for the gorillas. They do this in the wild until they are old enough and ready to have a mate. Why would anyone want that. It's the same as a woman in her 70s having a baby. Not to mention, when the little ones get older they tend to mess with their mothers. So you would have a older genki getting beat on every day. Nene is having that problem now.

This is one of the most poorly managed gorilla groups in Japan, conditions inside and out are not maintained well the outdoor space is too small and very boring for visitors and the poor gorillas that are imprisoned there.😢
What would they be doing in Nature but sitting around all day like they are now? I don’t agree with you.

And they are FREE to choose where they go and when they eat and who they mate with. 80% of captive adult males have heart disease, which it’s believed is caused by the lack of exercise and access to a particular fruit found in their natural habitat. Captive gorillas engage in behaviours not seen in wild gorillas like incest, regurgitation and eating their own vomit, excessive grooming, head holding, rocking, etc. I could go on… It is true that wild gorillas are at terrible risk from humans but let’s not pretend that zoos, which are nothing more than prisons for human entertainment, are the answer. Sanctuaries are an answer, better policing of poachers on their land is an answer, humans finding alternatives to the resources that destroy their habitats are an answer.
@@daisyfontazy423 We don't know what they do out in the wild, to pin captivity on a few issues we see is not fair-unless you track and research gorillas as a profession, and observe their daily lives in that fashion, we can only speculate how they act out in the wild. It's easy to say it's the zoo's fault because we see it daily, and perceive it using our human emotions. Those born into captivity only know one home-their zoo. If mankind would stop destroying their lands, and poaching them, they wouldn't be in this situation. It's a Rock and a Hard place for sure.
