  • Following on from the previous video with Rachel and Gareth, I wanted to illustrate how nicely the aircraft glides. Then it was time for a quick stall before landing back at Orlando Executive!
    Enjoy the flight!

    I'd happily watch hour-long videos of yours as I'm sure the rest of us would. Your content is by far the funniest, most imformative and enjoyable on RUclips. Just wish more people would know you exist. Props my man! Keep em' coming Lew...

      Thank you for supporting me and enjoying the videos that I make man! I don't want to be the type of channel that shows you how serious you must be if you are a pilot. That's not what I am about. I think I have proved that you can take aviation seriously but at the same time have a lot of fun doing what we love. That is my message to everyone! What you see in the videos is genuine (Apart from the silly skits I do haha). I don't try and be something I'm not. Thanks for the support

      @@LewDixAviation That's why this is my favorite channel, Lewis. I will say that I didn't really get your style when I first started watching, primarily because it was so different from the other aviation channels. However, since then, I've come to truly appreciate just how much you do take aviation - and aviation safety - seriously. You are also an excellent pilot with an incredible ability to teach those skills to others. There's no doubt that your students are learning AND having a great time while doing so. Keep up the good work, my friend.

      @@jan3195 Thank you for those kind words! That means a lot.. I have discussed the point you made about not getting what I was doing at first a few times with people. I am fully aware that the way that I present my content is different than everyone else on RUclips, but I truly believe that I have created a new genre of aviation video. I never wanted to make boring ride along videos and at the beginning it was unavoidable, but I had never seen anyone else make the type of videos that I now make. I believe my best asset is my humour, and it makes me overwhelmingly happy that people are now getting what I'm trying to do on here. I've developed my philosophy that flight training and flying in general should be fun, because we pay a lot of money to do what we do. The last thing we deserve is to sit in a plane with a drill instructor, sucking the life out of the best thing in the world. But back to the point, my goal is to keep growing the channel and keep entertaining. Those that understand me and enjoy being entertained are always welcome. Those that choose not to indulge in the fun are missing out, in my opinion!
      Thanks for your support!

      We’re taught as CFIs to build concepts on top of each other, so anyone learning how to fly should start off with light lessons but specific concepts and have each lesson build off of the previous ones. You don’t want to throw the book at them their first flight.

    Lewis I've been watching several of your videos and you explain things very clearly. For example I now know to use rudder to recover from a spin and not aileron (right?). I like your straightforward yet laid back British sensibility too! When I start training for my PPL, I'd hope to have an instructor like you-are you still instructing? I have family in Florida and have thought about doing my flight training there. When they let us out of lockdown that is and life gets back to normal! -Brian here in Cali

    Great video again, thanks, sounds like you guys have a lot of fun....
    Can anyone tell me how the sink rate relates to best glide speed please. The two aspects must influence each other? All I've heard about, almost everywhere, is 'best glide speed'.
    Thanks again, great video, nice to hear the instructor tell us about his bad days too, it's reassuring and encouraging (not to hear of others' misery LOL! But to hear that everyone experiences it, from time to time).

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
      A simple way to think about descent rate when gliding is to think about drag. This is the way that I have always thought about it: The best glide speed is based on getting to the point where you are producing the most amount of lift with the least amount of total drag. The angle of attack is such that you are descending at a speed that maintains this balance. Let's say your best glide speed is 65 knots and you are at 75 knots, your angle of attack is lower which increases airspeed which increases parasite drag, therefore increasing total drag and your descent rate. You can also see the obvious that pushing the nose down alone will make you descend faster. Now let's say you are at 55 knots. The angle of attack is higher which means you are producing more induced drag, therefore increasing total drag and your descent rate.
      I hope that helps!

    I have been away from flying for several yrs and getting back into flying again (I have the bug again) I am really struggling with my landings , I have caught myself spending to much time inside the cockpit and not enough outside , I fixate on my airspeed to much and my good config on final goes out the window, any suggestions ?
    Thanks for sharing so helpful , your technique makes things inside the cockpit a wonderful atmosphere

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  4 года назад +2

      Hey mate.. At the private pilot level we are visual pilots. Eyes outside 90% of the time, glance inside 10%. You're gonna have to catch yourself and remember just to glance at the airspeed. If you look at it and it's where you want it, look back outside and keep that same sight picture you have. You know then that if you do that, you don't have to keep looking inside. Trust yourself not to have to look inside all the time
