My wife's favorite was "Thanksgiving Dinner". Stove Top Stuffing, margarine, craisins and the foil pouches of chicken, all rehydrated/heated in a ziploc.

    Leaving a late comment here. Firstly, I love your videos. 🥰 Because you like Mac&Cheese, what I do is cold soak the Mac first. Then boil a small amount of water, add to the drained Mac and add the powdered cheese, with a little olive oil. This saves fuel and is very quick. Yum.
    Hope that helps.

    I wanted to ask a question that someone could hopefully help me with. Why couldn't you take a loaf of bread or some actual fruit on some of these long distance hikes. I know that the bread will eventually go bad and it might get crushed inside the backpack, but you could still strap it to the outside of the bag maybe? Same thing with the fruit. Obviously these would have to be strictly eat first kinds of food. Just wondering if it's a good or bad idea.

And what was the average time between resupplies for you? I must admit.... your understated way of doing your videos hooked me... no 10 minute full face selfies...no in your face, blaring music etc etc.... Hope you and Mr Nick are doing well!!!

    We used to make our own scroggin for an easy snack while tramping we would buy the dried fruit nuts and chocolate and mix it together. When you mentioned the zip lock bags it reminded me of my 88 year old Father telling the story of the first time he saw plastic. He was preparing to go on his first tramp with his cousin. She had his tube of stuff called plastic that she cut sections of and sealed the end with an iron to make plastic bag to take tramping. How the world has changed.

    It's getting late in the season so i hope you're near the end. Another question: what was the longest stretch between re-supply stops?
    Try this trail pasta:
    noodles, dry (or fresh) onion (aka onion flakes, available from Cosco and others), fresh garlic (you could use garlic salt), green pepper (fresh or dried mixed veggies), Italian dry salami, sun dry tomatoes, a package of tomato sauce. During the day, soak the dry veggies and tomatoes a block of parmesan cheese. In camp boil water to cook pasta. While pasta is cooking, chop everything else with your swiss army knife. Drain off most of the water, toss in the other stuff. Let it all heat up a bit and bon appetite. You could do much the same thing with your dehydrated refried beans as well (call it chili). A hot meal on a cold day is a huge morale booster. Desert: cream cheese on fruit cake. Another desert: no bake cheese cake

    Hi Mari thanks for the eating video. I hope I don't sound like a jerk but jezz, I have a few tips. Take it or leave it. So, thats 4 days? How much does that weigh? For the same volume I pack 7-12 days. First thought is, high callories does not equal usable calories. Just because there's 300 calories of sugar in that chocolate bar or cookie doesn't mean your body can convert that to usable glucose that will build healthy muscle tissue. You're not eating protiene dense food. For the same weight of the chocolate you can have food that will make you feel like your liquid greens do, so why carry these unusable calories? I'm not perfect either but almost everything has a second purpose in my pack. I'm vegitarian and hike 7-14 days without resupply. This is what I carry, breakfast to dinner: coffee, quinoa, tumeric, pumpkinseed, sunflower seed, dried cranberries, olive oil, brown parboiled rice, brown lentils, dried vegtables (I bought a dehydrator) - carrot, zuccini, beats, mushrooms, red peppers, sweet potatos, kale, dehydrated snacks - bannana chips, apple, zuccini chips, berries, other fruit, nuts (no peanuts) - brazillian nuts, almonds, cashews, hazzel nuts, praleines, walnuts (or almonds, pumpkin seed, dried cranberry is a good mix), dark chocolate 80- 90 % cocoa or bakers chocolate (iron & digestion), vega One meal replacement (with chlorella for green content), nutritional yeast, knor soups or instant sauces, nori. Last time I brought stone cut oats which was not bland on trail but may make you gassy if prone. Sometimes I bring pasta (preferable brown rice pasta) but there's definatly no nutrients in samola pasta. That's what I brought on my first hike and I lost 15 Lb in a week and was sick after. Pasta and cheerios doesn't cut it out there. Lol.
    I hiked the Bruce Trail, end to end 885 km 550 miles in Ontario, Canada and this is what I learned about food.

    Pasta, cold soak then cook. Cuts down on the fuel use.
    You were concerned with calorie and protein but what you showed is carb and sugar heavy. I think you need more fat in your diet to balance things out. Also, turmeric is dubious. And even if it did work no amount of supplement will help if you are eating food that causes inflammation. Dehydrated/freeze dried veggies and fruit are great! Also nuts and seeds are a great source of protein and fat.

    I understand it is for the convenience, but it was so hard to see all the plastic packaged food . From your previous videos it seems that you are conscious about your plastic footprint. What is your feeling did you produce more or less food packaging waste than in your normal life?

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  4 года назад +3

      I can understand your concern! Unfortunately there's no good way around using plastic for such a long hike. I probably did use a little more than usual, but I reused every bag I could, until they were not useable anymore. I also bought food from bulk bins when I could, but that still required me to put the food into a plastic bag. The good thing is that I think thru-hiking overall, is a lot more eco-friendly, due to living outside and not using much electricity or water.
