My best round ever felt "boring" and I realized it might not have been the best choice of words. Rather, I like to think it was "uneventful". No bunkers, no shots from under the trees, no water, no 3 putts.
I'm still a mid-handicapper (15-ish) that struggles with driver. Like you've said, hitting longer off the tee is big and sets up easier second or third shots, so I've been working with a pro on my swing in hopes of gaining control of driver and lowering my handicap as well as eliminate one side of the course on my misses. Having a 2-way miss makes correcting mid-round much more difficult. Sadly, my pro, like most, teaches inside on mat with a launch monitor; getting out on the course and knowing how to play lies is a facet of the game I need to figure out on my own.
I'm loving your channel. In this video, you asked for suggestions. For me, learning more about strategies for senior golfers, like me, who didn't hit it very far anymore, would be helpful.
I'm a two and I always go back to what I heard Lee Trevino give as a tip to the TV audience after his post round interview. The interviewer asked Lee for a tip to all the weekend golfers and Lee gave a tip that I don't remember what it was and as he turned to walk away, he turned back and said with a wry smile; "and hitting 300 balls a day at the range doesn't hurt either".
Great advice! However, on the question of gaining more distance from the tee, I would say that most of the people I play with (in their forties up to sixties) are teeing off on a yellow, when they should be on the blues, and on some courses the red. They're setting themselves up to fail, whacking the ball with the driver and sending the ball off the fairway most of the time.
Yes ‘boring’ golf is the right term and was how I described my best medal round this year. No out of bounds, bunkers, lost balls or penalty shots, also many regulation 2 putts.
Excellent content Hannah - all very good points, though I do keep my 3-wood in the bag as on my local course it does come in handy. I scored a better than usual round today using the tip you gave out recently about chipping by gripping clubs to get a toe-down position. Worked a treat round the greens!
Great tips and video... I'm a 2 handicap my mindset while on the course is to hit the ball to the middle of the green and pin high avoid 3 putts and try to keep it in the short grass ....I've always played a draw I feel no need to change ....keep up the awesome work
When I was a junior, a long long time ago, the pro told me the flag could be back, front, left or right but the middle of the green is always in the middle of the green. A wise man.
15:50 - I had a round a couple of years ago in which I made 17 straight pars and then bogeyed the last. And it WAS both frustrating and really amazing! I think I hit 12 greens that day, so I got up and down 5/6 times and shot one over. I mean, that's amazing! And frustrating! And I putted REALLY BADLY. Hannah, I would love a more in-depth video on uneven lies, particularly the downhill lie with the ball below the feet. And any ideas you might have for how to practice these. I used to go to my local course and play nine when it wasn't busy and drop balls in different spots to hit from different lies, but post-Covid every single course is completely packed every day from sunrise to sunset, so I can't do that anymore.
Hannah thank you for another great video! Could you review and suggest some premium shafts for the driver, for us slower swinging seniors? 84mph and so need a bit more distance!!! love the new channel!
Take a look at the fitting videos from elite performance golf; his summary was that for the average golfer there was no point fitting them with premium shafts and distance gains from the equipment would be through optimising loft and spin.
@hannahholdengolfI'm looking to get Wilson launchpad or similar. Saw you video with them. I have poor mobility now and want any help I can get. I was curious about what spec you got sent. Thanks for the reply much appreciated. Billy
Hi Hannah, as a newish golf I find your videos really useful, keep up the good work. Any chance of doing a video on playing out of the rough ( particuarly long rough, which is where I seem to spend a lot of time.), Cheers
great advise hannah - i play off 3 and at the start of the summer i realised that i hit a fade off the tie very easily so said would just do that every time and FIR shot up and love the expression of boring golf - always my best rounds - didn't even notice few times that i had 13/15 pars
Great video Hannah. Thank you. Stick with me on this! Completely get the Driver advantage but have struggled until this year for time and became terrified of driver. Play everything generally with a draw but literally had a two way miss, and didnt know where driver was gonna go. Not great with OOB on 17 out of 18 holes. I’m from a generation before bigger, longer drivers and had a few lay offs due to family etc. Was off 6 as a junior but as I say let membership lapse etc and struggled to find the time to play golf as well As I knew I could. Had struggled for years but this year circumstances changed and decided to put time and money into my golf game. Rejoined my old club and got a TM BRNR mini, can’t say how much this club saved my game! Suddenly I’m hitting fairways and have shorter clubs in. Initially I couldn’t see a difference or loss in yardage because I was hitting the middle more and just in more holes. After a decent summer handicap is now 12 and though was rained off in the autumn to stop me hitting my single figure target I now feel set for next year. When I have been able to play I’ve seen that the wetter ground has reduced my driver distance and now experimenting with a Driver and MD set up. My aim for December next year is 5 and really set up for giving it a go!
Great video as always Hannah 👏👏- great content , I think wedge play and putting is key , I’m good from 100 yards in but have improved how I play by practicing putting - be great to have a video on your thoughts on putting 🙏🙏
Great video, thanks for the tips. I'll apply your advice to my game (12 HCP). Any tips on getting a better backswing turn on the driver? Or the bigger issue of golfers who want total control of the club and can't get that full turn, shaft parallel, etc.?

I hardly ever use my 3 wood off the tee, but to give up that club for another driver is not in my best interest. When I started golfing the drivers were as big as my 3 wood head wise. I have Radspeed woods and my 3 wood is lofted at 15.5 degrees. I hit a baby draw 235 out and landed the ball 7 feet from the pin. Would you give up that club? Me neither.
Do you use a yardage book when practicing? Also, what does your scorecard look like when you are on the course practicing? I am a 3 handicap and track fairways, GIR, putts, score, NET but wanting to lower my scores.
Very much appreciated Hannah. However, the tip to go for more distance shots may be right for low handicappers i.e. -5 to -10. It makes no sense for mid to high handicappers; these need to eliminate double, triple and quadruple bogies and that's not by trying to hit further, but by playing more safe shots, albeit maybe shorter. Playing safe shots and course managment brings the handicap down. (Re-visited after having completed the video: Yes, you name exactly that, thank you. A different order of naming the points would have brought a different perspective. Distance as last point for instance).

I lean on my 5-wood off the tee as I hit 15% more fairways and only lose 15-20 yards from Driver. Is that a good trade-off? 🤷🏼♂️ Problem with Driver is it’s so inconsistent. Lovely common sense advice Hannah. Unfortunately common sense is not common on the golf course. Was playing a senior fourball a couple of years ago, shotgun start. Starting hole was a 175 metre par three, so roughly 190 -195 yards. Standing on the tee was impressed to see 2 3 woods and 2 hybrids. My comment to the other three, "so glad we are living with the reality of our abilities". Keep it up, hope the channel grows.
Hello Hannah I'm already in a subscriber. I think most scratch golfers are not very good from 30 to 70 or 80 yards. Hence watching a lot of Dan grieve👍😁
Adding a 3/4 swing for wedges and 9 is definitely boring but essential. Good for distance control and gnarly lies. I'd also like to see more average golfers with a second fairway finder driver that's 43" or 44" and a smooth, boring swing. I think maybe swings that are too exciting are biggest problem for average golfers, haha.
I do exactly the same from lies that are above my feet ( push right ) what is this down to ? I’ve noticed it is the longer irons , I’ve tried lowering my grip down the handle but still happens 🤯golf’s hard 😂
Can you suggest a fitness regime to gain club swing speed? Maybe a session in the gym rather than the golf course with you talking us through say 5 best ways to develop the right fast switch muscles?
I really HATE the term "boring golf" used when playing good golf. To me, hitting fairways and greens, staying outta trouble, rendering 2 putts and once in a while notching a few birdies is highly motivating and makes me happy. Bad rounds are so frustrating and boring, especially when your/or half your partners are playing the same way. The round drags, then you feel down the rest of the day. Good golf should make you happy and feel accomplished. Yes, it's not a game we can master 100%, but we should all strive to feel like Moe Norman did in his day, "Golf is truly happiness," he said around the 10min 30sec on this video, but don't dare to skip the rest! 🙂 ruclips.net/video/RTKQWdwrqs4/видео.html
Then only time i miss left or go left at all is when the ball is above my feet …i know this and try to adjust aim accordingly, but rarely works out 😂.great tips though for sure…..iam guilty of trying the draw around trees to get on/near green ..but in my defense its after a roumd has gone so bad and i cant make my score any worse so i figure i might as well get practice on grass instead of mats of the range …and id love to be bored of hitting fairways and greens in regUlation😜👍🏼✌️
Hey Hannah, if you play off +2, that means you’re plenty good enough to turn pro, but you haven’t. Personal question, if you don’t mind: why haven’t you turned pro?
@@michaelgillies9075 So you're saying that turning pro would prevent her from doing that? I don't think it would - it doesn't stop others - but that's why I'm curious.
I haven’t turned pro in the past as I stop loved competing. It’s generally more affordable to go play big amateur events than to play pro events! I also could never afford to do a full pro season
@hannahholdengolf Thanks for that! It's a world many of us weekend hackers only have a very vague idea about. I do remember a video earlier this year where you said you were going to play in a pro event. I was also wondering about whether being a club pro had crossed your mind. I guess not all of them compete, and they give lessons and some of them even have RUclips channels.
Playing off mats at a range or in a SIM creates a false sense of security, playing off of wet claggy ground, or summer hard pan creates a real challenge; these can only be taken on with practice. Short game in winter if windy, it really helps to hit a longer iron, and swing softly flighting the ball under the wind, the green will be receptive as its soft, flying a high wedge is dangerous and brings more of the elements into play than you need.
Things plus handicaps do that I didn't: start as children/teenagers. That's basically it. You can't learn it as an adult unless you're a natural athlete.
I play off 6 at 72 years old last year I shot a 71 gross happy days however my golf mates play off 20/22 and 18, they never complement me on shots they just take it for granted lol
Not sure if this video is aimed at mid or high handicappers. But I can tell you that distance is definitely not the reason why someone might still have a high handicap.
I firmly believe in hitting it as hard as you can. I find that swinging hard keeps my mechanics in line. I ditched the 3-wood 11 years ago with the introduction of the TaylorMade SLDR Mini Driver. I've been using them since, and I currently bag the latest one. Problem: I'm 65 now and play to a 6. The distance difference between driver and Mini is shrinking. But the Mini is WAY more accurate. It won't be long until I dump the driver permanently. I use a 3/x system. I know how I'll carry (assuming a normal lie, before elevation and weather are accounted for). I have 3 positions--half, 3/4, and full--for 4 different clubs--PW, GW, SW, and LW. With those yardages known, I can make a good choice based on yardage, lie, wind, etc. (I learned this in The Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz.) Take your medicine and punch out when you need to. But....what would be a horrible gamble for us is routine for professionals. Thus, we see a pro hit it through a tiny slot, or hit a massive hook or slice on purpose, we try it, too. Don't. I'd rather move the ball forward and then try to get up-and-down. I set up for--and typically hit--a draw. I CAN hit a fade, but I don't like it. So I almost never try to do so. I just try to hit it somewhere it makes sense to do so.
Disagree with the pros don't do it so you shouldn't philosophy. But, I think most people never practice crazy shots. Encourage you to try. I golf for fun, so it is different. For me fun is making those crazy shots even if it fails sometimes. I still make plenty.
Im currently 7.2 and a senior golfer, have been 5.0 but never got lower. My tip, make sure you are worst player in your group....biggest incentive to get better is getting pumped 2 or 3 times a week.
My best round ever felt "boring" and I realized it might not have been the best choice of words. Rather, I like to think it was "uneventful". No bunkers, no shots from under the trees, no water, no 3 putts.

I do remember a video earlier this year where you said you were going to play in a pro event. I was also wondering about whether being a club pro had crossed your mind. I guess not all of them compete, and they give lessons and some of them even have RUclips channels.
Awesome! I will no longer look sexy on the course. The true path to scratch. 😊
You can also choke down on a driver so more control. Always an overlooked option
Hi great tips. One thing is destroying me - ball striking and hitting the low point. 50 % hit/miss. One minute pure, next puke. Aargh
“Just always hopeful”…yep.
Yup 😅😅😅
A message to everybody just relax go out enjoy your golf
Most of don’t need more distance by improving speed. We just need to find the center of clubface much more.
You can't learn it as an adult unless you're a natural athlete.
. More great food for thought. I am going to be busy this winter. Thank you Hannah.
As i play bogey golf i do at least 100 things that scratch golfers don't do. 🙄😁
😅😅
(I learned this in The Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz.)
Take your medicine and punch out when you need to.
Well, wait until you get old and stiff.and start losing distance. Hitting it farther than others in your age group is an advantage though.
Disagree with the pros don't do it so you shouldn't philosophy. But, I think most people never practice crazy shots. Encourage you to try. I golf for fun, so it is different. For me fun is making those crazy shots even if it fails sometimes. I still make plenty.
👍👍
Terrible title 😂 Should be, things scratch golfers do but you can't... Asking me to hit it further is 100% the problem.
😂😂😂
Respectfully,…..looking good Hannah!
Stock shots are interesting. So then there's zero reason to have a blade apart from distance consistency
Black outfit = she means business.
Keeps the heat in
Play, play, play not range, range, range
so hit further...work on short game...LOLO
Great advice. 👍🏌🏻♂️
Im currently 7.2 and a senior golfer, have been 5.0 but never got lower.
My tip, make sure you are worst player in your group....biggest incentive to get better is getting pumped 2 or 3 times a week.
