- Wild camping with Paul Messner on a stormier than expected night beside Innominate Tarn on Haystacks, in the Cumbrian Lake District near Honister Pass. This is was the final resting place of Alfred Wainwright and I was hoping not to join him! First proper wind test of my Terra Nova Southern Cross 1 as well. Shot on the Panasonic GH6.

Stephen my friend….that was absolutely genius. What an entertaining video from start to finish. I definitely have to up my film game. Thank you for inviting me along and you deserve every success as a film maker….but leave the cakes to Mr Kipling 😉
I got Stephens back on this one. 15s are epic.. 🤯🤪
Thanks very much Paul, had a great time despite the rain and enjoyed seeing it from your perspective. Especially as I was warm and dry all night 😂
Mr Kipling does make exceeding good cakes, but they are no fifteens!
Fifteens Gang!
2 great youtubers bonding in the wild . What could be better 😎
Can’t believe he got you to mention me lol. Great colab 👍
I followed Paul for a while. Amazing to see you guys went camping together!
Thanks Nikki 🙂 You'll like one of my other videos from the Lake District, hiking over a knife edge ridge while spinning the Insta360 One X2 around my head on the 10ft long pole 🤣
Thank you to Paul for sending me here. What an excellent video Stephen. Much impressed. Very professional, informative and entertaining. Please keep up the great work. 👍
Thanks very much! 🙂 I’ll keep at it
The filming and production in this video is amazing. Honestly looks like it’s been filmed by a professional TV crew
Thanks very much 🙂 My day job is professional video production so trying to make these adventure videos look as good as possible 🙂
I really enjoyed your video. I have watched Paul's video as well. blew me away how you captured yhe beautiful scenary. If I was there In would be in such awe. I just sat on the beach head of ulleswater with my partner chilling and in awe of the mountains surrounding me . Thankyou so much.
You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Amazing production on this film - thank you
Thanks very much nick! 🙂
Long time no comment. Thanks for sharing your Lake District camping trip! Beautiful country.
Thanks Kai! 🙂🙂
Thanks to Paul, I am now subscribed. You my friend are quite funny and excellent with the camera! We do like the chest rig too.
Paul is a great chap😁 Thanks for poping over, bit of a more random mix here.
Stunning stunning stunning editing and cinematography
Thanks so much! 🙂🙂
Absolutely bangin! 🤩🤩🤩🙌🏻
Thanks Sarah 🙂
Absolutely cracking cinematography. Subscribed.
Thanks very much Gary! 🙂
Beautiful clip, so well done Stephen, came here from Neil's channel, Run Sensible! Fully watched and subscribed as I love those so well done clips of yours! Best wishes mate!
Thanks very much! Welcome aboard 🙂🙂
Recommended by Paul Messner. Now a subscriber to your channel. Photography is excellent! Enjoyed your vlog👌👌
Thanks Gordon 🙂 Seems Mr Messner has sent a few this way!
Came from Paul's channel and have subscribed. Loving your drone shots, really brings out the beauty of the area, even in the crappy weather! Nice video ending too!!
Thanks very much! welcome. haha, you stayed for the daft faces at the end 🙂
What a Video Stephen thank you for sharing even with this weather u managed to beautiful show case the area 🧡 see you on the trail
Thanks! The moody skies actually made for some of my favourite footage from the entire trip 🙂 Catch you on the trails!
@@StephenJReid yes the moody sky can add a great atmosphere 🧡
The best Lake District video I’ve seen this weekend! Very entertaining and cinematic!
Thanks Jo! 🙂 Hope Paul left you one of those Fifteens! 😁
What an inspiring film. I'll call it a film because its so much better than a video!
I'm glad you enjoyed the experience -- despite the rain and howling wind :-)
Bruce
Thanks Bruce, high praise 🙂 I had a great time, apart from falling on that rock. I'll be back
Love the two of you together, and the videography was excellent. Must have been difficult lugging all the equipment up there to create the impression of wind and rain! 💦💨😁
Haha thanks Steve! I had nearly 20kg of camping and camera equipment without bringing a wind machine! 😂
Its great to see more of Paul just being Paul... Great combination you two together. Well done, excellent film making 👍
Thanks! We got on well together, which was relief having never met before. We could have hated each other! 😂😂
Great walk, entertaining video, just had knee replacement and looking forward to walking in the mountains again 😀
Thanks Wendy 🙂 Hope you’re back in the mountains soon!
Never thought I'd be finding a Buttercrane joke on RUclips 🤣 great work as ever, been hitting the Mournes again after watching your vids!
I supply all your niche joke needs 🤣 I'll hopefully get back to the Mournes this week. Was meant to be racing on Thursday, but have to work now.
Awesome video Stephen!..Also love Mr Messners channel😁
Thanks Mark!
Brilliant video. You do get the weather in the Lakes but worth it for the views 😃. I think I preferred your tent for sure lol 😂.
Thanks Marie! 🙂 haha yeah I was quite smug in my tent knowing Paul was having a terrible time 😂
2 legends together enjoying what they do best... Fair play lads. That colour grading & film producing Stephen is nothing short of superb. Well worth the wait to see this one... 🙌
Thanks very much! Very pleased with this one, spent about 10hours on the edit 🙂
The images are gorgeous, the editing crisp, thank you for bearing with the puddles to bring us this gem. Honestly makes me want to camp in howling rain B:b
It’s definitely worth doing at least once 😂 thanks Tobi 🙂
What a great video. Throughly entertaining and very professionally done. I've hit the subscribe button 👍
Thanks very much Steve! 🙂
Been waiting for this one. Didn't disappoint. Brilliant. Soggy, but brilliant... these are the ones ya don't forget. Lake District is a stunning part of the world, hail, rain or shine. Cheers for the video, I'll switch over and give Paul's a watch now. Cheers Stephen.
I’ll definitely not forget this one in a hurry! 😂 thanks Colin
I think this could be your best video yet. The footage and editing is exceptional you can tell that you have been into filmmaking a long time and the humour as usual is brilliant. All the best and Congratulations on the 30k subscribers 👍
Thanks so much! I realised that my RUclips videos don’t often reflect my work as a filmmaker so I’m trying to put more effort into key videos as I’d love to get more commercial work as an outdoors filmmaker. 🙂
@@StephenJReid well you did a cracking job on this one.. I watch all of your videos and they're always a good watch with really nice edits and footage but this one definitely stood out. I know what you mean about focusing on the key videos, it makes sense.. Your footage, colour grading, audio and everything was class and better yet it was really good to see how yourself and Paul got along. I'll stop rambling now but fair play again 👍
@@RamblingOn thanks for rambling on 🙂
Came here for Paul, subscribed for Stephen! Great video, thanks guys :-)
Aw thanks Louise!
Wow looked over from Paul’s channel and this version of events kept me entertained and laughing. What a big personality. Love Wildcampimg myself and will keep looking at your content love the humour atb Dave 😂👍
Thanks very much! 🙂 I make a bit of a mix of videos but check out the adventures playlist for camping videos.
I saw the intro to his video and thought "I've gotta find out who filmed that"!!! 👌
Haha thanks! Put extra effort into this one 😁
@@StephenJReid you really have got some skills!!! But I must ask, did you film that bit with the iPhone or GoPro 10?
Well done , the lakes are a magical place, thanks & regards
Thanks! They definitely are 😁
Stunning video. Found you as I follow Paul. I am a bushcraft type wild camper really but long to camp where you guys go. Great vid. Thanks.
You might like this one: ruclips.net/video/225Bsfk-t4o/видео.html A little bit of kinda bushcrafty stuff in it. I do like to combine my camping styles, prefer a forest camp in winter, warmer and possibly of a fire.
Happy new year!!! Well I'm only 7 months behind on your videos now! That was a good one, nice to see you exploring in England. I drove along the Honister Pass when we visited the lakes in 2021, I loved it... my wife not so much, she was terrified!
Haha, just wait until you get caught up! This was a great trip, planned it for a while. hopefully get back soon.
This is brilliantly editied, amazing job!
Thanks Paolo! 🙂
Awesome video, I have just started doing RUclips videos and your editing is what the rest of us can only dream off achieving. Fantastic!
Thank you!
People should watch your work more. Really fun video. Made me laugh and sad and that's rare. The editing is amazing too. I'm glad I discovered your channel.
Thanks very much! Glad you’re enjoying the content 🙂
great vid - you and Paul make a good combination -
Thanks Ken! 🙂
Found you from Messner's video. Your videos are epic!!! 😍
Thanks very much Gaz🙂 welcome aboard, it’s a bit of a mix on here
Hi Stephen, congrats on the channel, I've subscribed not because of the awesome scenes you shoot, or the witty commentary & fun story lines but because of the pensive faces you make!!!! keep up the great work!!!!
If by great work you mean silly faces, I’ll keep at it 😂
Love Paul’s channel and I only do a bit of moto camping, very silly but entertaining🤣👍. Love the Lakes, live an hour and a half away…
Thanks Ian! Wish I lived closer to the lakes or id be there a lot more often making videos. I’m a ferry trip and 3.5hours driving away. Ferry costs a fortune currently as well
Hi Stephen, I have the same setup pouch on my rook 65. My partner is a wiz on the old sewing machine and has adjusted the straps to fit on the backpack.
Very handy! My sewing skills are not so good 😂 very useful having kit upfront.
Great video Mate 👍🏻 love the channel, just subscribed 🤗 can not wait to go through the back log of your videos
Thanks very much! 🙂 the channel is a bit of a mix as you’ll see. Running, tech, camping, hiking, some bushcraft. I used to focus on tech more, but outdoors is really what I want to make videos about
Just came across your channel…I am now a subscriber. Great video 🔥
Hey thanks for subscribing! Hope you found some more videos you like!
Followed you here from Paul’s channel. Superb video 👍🏼 that must have taken some time to edit, love it. P.s, nice touch on the Eye of Sauron / Barad-dûr 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Gary! Took about 10hours to edit, mostly sitting in my van listening to rain. Was very surprised to find Barad-dûr up there myself, was pretty sure it had fallen down 🤣
@@StephenJReid haha 😂👍🏼
Beautiful imagery, editing and score choices. Bravo!
Thank you! 🙂
Superb story telling and videography , have to start watching your channel more often , so i can improve my channel
Thanks very much Pierre! 🙂
Hi Stephen. I really liked this video. You clearly know how to get great drone footage. I'm jealous. I'm in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Nice, but not as nice as the scenery in your vids. I'll comb through your back catalog and eagerly await your next one. Cheers.
Thanks so much! 🙂 I’d love to go to Canada sometime and go explore some vast area of wilderness.
Great collaboration, 2 of my fav YTubers 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Graeme, glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
great video , love the inside tent ovenight faces🤣

Omg what fantastic filming and editing. It was like watching a Hollywood blockbuster. Genius
Thanks Adrian! Trying to up my game a bit more with my adventure videos 🙂
@@StephenJReid well you certainly have done. Although this is my first watch but I will be watching more from you. Have a wonderful day

Great drone shots and video shots.
Thanks Chris!
Linked from Paul's site! Absolutely beautiful 👍
Thanks Earle! Welcome 🙂🙂
Well done Stephen, great video, just back from the Brecons where I gave my Southern cross a good test in similar conditions too & it was fine, handled everything the weather threw at it, hope you team up with Paul again !
Thanks Steve, it’s a solid tent, I’m very happy with it so far. Hopefully do another one with Paul sometime 🙂
Brilliant 👏 👏
Superbly edited!
Paul treated you to one of the best 👌🏼
He did indeed, great location!
First time I've come across your channel, incredible!

Cool collaboration 😎
Thanks Michael, been looking forward to this collab for a while!
Great stuff! Very happy the intro on Paul’s video got me here! New Sub 👍👍

Absolutely brilliant film Stephen. Very atmospheric. Well done. I prefer the Aberdeen Buttery myself. ATB.
Thanks Benjamin 🙂 Never tried a Buttery myself, I'll be in Scotland in a few weeks so I'll have to seek some out!

What camera do you use to film? I use a canon M50 but not put out a video with what I’ve Filmed with it yet as it’s been a bad couple of years for me I need to get my cleveland way hike edited only thru hiked it in 2020 lol 😂
This is so good.

Came here from Paul's video of you two in the rain.
Thanks! Was a damp night 😬
Hooked from Paul Messner’s channel…great work!
Hey thanks Dan, welcome aboard 🙂
Beautifully shot, makes me want to get a drone.
Thanks Kev. Affiliate link in description 😛 Drones are great, but they can be a hassle in all honestly as you have to carry extra kit and have to actually make sure to stop and use it.
@@StephenJReid I'm already carrying a Sony A7RII and Zeiss Loxia 21/2.8, a Sony RX10IV, two tripods and a Brave 7 action camera. I might need a dual purpose drone that shoots footage and can airlift a bag for me...
@@TheWalkingKev Haha, yup sounds familiar! Prob 30-50% of the non-food/water weight I was carrying was tech
@@StephenJReid the front carry thing looks like it could be useful. I'm definitely going to look into that.
Nice job fella,
"right ... now I'm off for a s***"
.. now that's a sign out ! :)
😂 in effect, yes. Was in near trouble by the time I found a toilet 😬
Nice one Stephen, Paul's a good lad. Looked a grim night. 😬
Thanks Wallace, was grim indeed, although it helped knowing that Paul had it worse 😂😂
@@StephenJReid haha, aye your Southern Cross looked solid. 😁
Yes stephen...that was a quality watch and nice to meet you both at the dub hut for the photo...im youtube famous 😂😂😂🙏🎯
Haha, nice to meet you! 😄 Don’t let the game go to your head 😂
@@StephenJReid what game?? Nothing to see here 😂😂 I haven't eaten all day...the nerves have kicked in already 🙏💙👀
Hi Stephen, can you also do a review on the chest rig and where you bought it please?
Wow, first video of yours I’ve came across. Do you use colour grading and ND filters on your drone shots? Incredibly captured Stephen, well done
Thanks very much Ben! I colour grade, but rarely use ND filters on the drone. They don’t improve the quality, just allow for motion blur.
Stephen, that was fantastic. Instant sub from me. 👍🏼
Thanks so much Ste! Welcome aboard, although its not all camping on here as you'll see 🙂
I came over for a visit from Paul, fantastic content Stephen! the filmography is really on point and so is the editing!
Only thing i feel was overdone was the extent of epic music in the background, it's not that it doesn't have a place, it's just too often for my taste; but hey, that's just my take. You do you! :)
Thanks very much and valid criticism. Not everyone likes constant music. I had wanted to do some more sections that just used sound design, but it’s very time consuming and I was on a tight schedule to finish. Edit was about 10hours.
We’ll this is for sure another channel to subscribe to! Cracking video, or should I say cinematic! Loved the camera work, slow mo’s and background music. Shame the weather didn’t hold up to much for your first trip to Lakes, but what a view you had nonetheless.
Thanks very much Jason 🙂 I was actually glad (afterwards) the weather was bad, made for a more interesting video and moody landscape. I was there for a week and shot 4 RUclips videos in total. A couple of hiking/fell running videos and a mountain cooking video.
Hey Paul, excellent video as usual. One tip though, don't do inonimate tarn again unless you like being flooded out. That place floods in slight drizzle, or 1mm of rain lol. I've done it three times, been completely flooded twice and the last time I went there had my tent completely destroyed by wind and rain that wasn't forecast, and it had been a lovely summers day. That place wrecked my mates new Hilliberg, and they are supposed to be bomb proof. Never again!
Bob Bell
Solid advice! 😂 definitely more exposed up there than it looks. The rocks don’t give as much cover as it appears and the wind was constantly changing direction
@@StephenJReid the place seems to suffer a lot from run off and it pools everywhere. I had a similar issue on red pike, halfway up at Bleaberry tarn. There's like a mezzanine level that looks perfect for camping. The following morning the run off from the top of red pike left a huge lake about 10 feet from my tent. A lucky escape. Best to stay closer to the lake.
epic footage
Thank you! 🙂
I went on the tour of that slate mine the other year and you're 100% right about the road. Scared the s*** out of me.
😂 it’s a fun drive! What did you think of the tour? I did it a couple of years ago, was fascinating
@@StephenJReid I really enjoyed it. The social history slant they take was far more interesting than a geological one might have been.
@@AllyRdr1 very true! I was fascinated and horrified to learn how much working the mines shortened your life expectancy
Nice videos as normal mate . Looked fun Derbyshire next 👍🏻
Thanks! 🙂 have a few trips planned this year 😁
Came over from Paul. Excellent video. Also, you showed a side of Paul he doesn't show us.
Thanks Garry 🙂 Was it his left or right side? 🤣 Had planned more of a interview/chat with Paul but the weather made that somewhat impossible .
Hi Stephen,
Arrived here via Pauls channel, loved the editing especially the drone footage.
I saw you were filming with your iPhone, do you use filmicpro and colour grade in post ? Im interested to know what you are doing.
The puddle under your tent, I like to think of it more as a water bed 😂
Like your filming style, I have subscribed and look forward to more of your adventures, you might want to consider subtitles tho with that accent 😉
Just kidding
ATB
Darren
Hi there! Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the video!
That was actually Paul's iPhone that I was holding at the river, I shot this video on a Panasonic GH6. Then I coloured graded the footage after.
However I do often go for lightweight options of iPhone or GoPro, here is a video I mostly shot on my iPhone 13 pro (same one Paul has): ruclips.net/video/225Bsfk-t4o/видео.html
If I'm shooting with my phone I use Filmic Pro for the best quality footage and then yes colour grade afterwards.
I vary my filming styles depending on what I'm making a video about, or if I can be bothered carrying heavy kit or not.
Ha! You all sound funny to us 🤣 World would be a boring place if we all sounded the same 😛
Great film, funny.
Thanks Shaun!
I was kinda assuming that those camping guys would be better at choosing their campsite, and not wind up with a small stream running throught their tent. Then again: besides being very pretty, the Lake District is also very wet and boggy! The aerial footage was stunning Stephen, despite (or maybe thanks to) the gloomy sky. Decades ago, I (from the Netherlands) cycled up Honister Pass, well ... pushed my bike up there LOL More of the same at Wrynose and Hardknott Pass! Man, there are some very, very steep and narrow roads in the Lake District!
Haha, the spot looked really dry when we got there, but we only had about 30mins until sunset so kinda stuck with the first good spot.
Haha, cycling up there is hardcore, I had my bike with me and got exhausted cycling 3miles into town over a small hill 😂
Great videography ! Also quite entertaining . You've got a new sub
Thanks very much Brian! Welcome aboard 🙂
You're gonna have a huge RUclips channel in a few months with this kind of content!
Nice of you to say and that would be nice 🙂! Although I think my channel is too mixed niche to grow really big. Been at it 3years now.
@@StephenJReid I wish you good luck, I will send your channel to like minded friends, hopefully you'll get there! Greetings from Belgium.
@@jannes3290 thank you 🙂
Great video, loved it..but it does serve to absolutely convince me camping up there is not for me!
Haha, it’s a tad windy
Lol was there doing honister ferrata extreme tues, yup that 25% incline for a 1.2 l fiat panda wasn't fun parking at the pass lol
Haha, it’s steep!
@@StephenJReid no shit haha....still Pillar is my last of the top 10 peaks to climb in the lakes and Honister pass seems a food place to head off from
Fellow gh6-er 😁👀📸 I wild camped at Dale Head Tarn from Honnister Pass last summer - it was lovely! The quality of your footage is brilliant, and I know how hard it is to lug the drone and heavier camera stuff around when camping! The effort is paying off for sure 😁
Hey thanks! I had a GH5 about 2years ago and got rid of it as the autofocus wasn’t good enough, but I always missed it. Loving the GH6 so far!
Haha, sometimes I go ultralight and shoot on my phone or a GoPro, and other times I like to bring a proper camera.
Yo Stephen .. your pain is our gain … wicked keep safe n carry on ✌️🙏
Thanks Tom!
What is that chest pouch? I've been looking for something similar. :-) Great video by the way :-)
It’s an Osprey Archeon, really useful! A few different options out there
@@StephenJReid thanks very much
Great footage
Thanks Russell! 🙂
Just started watching and had to pause to comment. I have to say I'm only a few minutes in and really quite impressed with the video quality of your camera as well as the editing. Most hikers I watch are UL hikers and understandably use smaller cameras like GOPro, phones mini DV cams etc and although they're still high quality they're leagues behind this. It's nice to see the Lakes shot like this. Super high quality and cinematic style.
Have you ever done the WHW rail? It would be awesome to see that recorded like this. I'm going again in July. I may have to hire you lol
[edit] After continuing to watch I think some sort of gimbal would be a good edition to your setup. Not a complaint, Just giving some constructive feedback :)
Thanks very much Adam 🙂 Most of my videos do probably take that more lightweight approach, but I'm a full-time commercial filmmaker and decided I want my RUclips to reflect that better so for these camping/adventure videos I'm trying to take a more cinematic approach.
I've done zero hiking in Scotland, although I will be there a couple of times this year, but for holiday/ running a mountain race.
I do plan on making video across more of UK & Ireland. Had plans in 2020, but then covid, so I'm only getting going again now.
I use gimbals for commercial work but would be very unlikely to use for a video like this. They add a lot of hassle and slow things down a lot and are heavy to carry. For this trip if I had brought a gimbal I would have had to leave behind something else.
Not ruling it out, just would need to be the right project with lots of time.
what tent is yours mate ?
It’s the Terra Nova Southern Cross 1
Lovely video, well done. Sorry that you had to spend so much time with Paul though... He seems a right moody git and not too sharp either.
I can’t tell if this is friendly banter or a genuine insult 🤣🤣
What did you film that on? Not sure about the ratio but the quality looked like 35 mm. I imagine the conditions in Ireland are often far worse!
Panasonic GH6. But I did go for a somewhat desaturated, more 35mm film look. The camera has great colours, perfect for outdoors.
I live on the East coast so prob similar weather, the West coast has some crazy storms coming off the Atlantic.
@@StephenJReid Fair play. It looked like it had a natural grain like 34mm. I look forward to seeing your future videos.
