The behaviour you described sounds like temporal lobe epilepsy, schizophrenia, and severe trauma from religion. If she was given anti depressants for the hallucinations (I think that was the main medication they had at that time) it would have helped a tiny bit but could never make them go away completely since they target the wrong neurotransmitters. Religious trauma mixed with the paranoia from the schizophrenia could make her scared to enter religious places or even look at religious pictures. And… yeah the stress of all those exorcisms could cause episodes of dissociation aka. The demons who eventually “showed up” 😞 this is indeed a tragic story where a sick young girl just couldn’t find the help she needed.

I'm catholic, I do believe some of the possessions. I also believe that her mother completely neglected her daughter when she didn't take her daughter to get mental help. Even though the church had told her to do so many times.

It was after the fiasco of the trial that the Catholic Church tightened up the reins on exorcisms. Only after approval of a bishop can an experienced priest practice an exorcism. The patient has to undergo medical care simultaneously and I think even mental health evaluations too. Needless to say exorcisms grew to be even rarer as science/ technology got better.

When you named the 6 demons who allegedly possessed the girl, I had to laugh a little. Those seem to be very typical choices for possession. The very first murderer, the most infamous betrayer, the most infamous persecutor of Christians, the modern definition of evil, some random former priest who she'd have heard about in her studies, and Satan himself... she's dropping names of the most evil people/entities in Christian history. If it were a real possession I'd expect a bit more randomness in the names.

Yep, in a true possession, while Lucifer would make sense it's ALWAYS very random hard to pronounce names. There is also the whole names have power in spirituality and to have one's true name would give you the power to force the energies to do your will. It's why in myth, fairies and other magical creatures never give their true name. Like Rumpelstiltskin, for example. But the names she mentioned are damned souls, human souls at that, where demons are not souls and were never alive to begin with. That was the biggest red flag for a mental illness. It's why this case is actually discussed in psychology classes as well as neuroscience classes.

I work in mental health, and literally everything described in the story of Anneliese are things I've seen in people with schizoaffective disorder. The real tragedy of her story is that she wasn't sent to a mental health facility. Beyond that the real tragedy is how the mental health facilities would have treated her at that time. I don't have a problem with people's personal religious beliefs. But I will say that the most dangerous thing for a person who has a schizoaffective disorder is their family members believing and demonic possession. I've watched families feed psychosis with prayers and exorcisms. I've watched people spend hours praying. I've watched people refuse to eat, because the demons won't let them. And I've watched people drink their own urine, and eat their own feces. I've heard them name demons as well. For the record I actually do believe in what's considered paranormal activity. But this girl was sick. She needed help. Instead they let her die.

I am a practicing catholic and I firmly believe in the supernatural and the unexplainable. That said, I also firmly believe that these things cannot be taken lightly or at face value, and that there almost always is a perfectly logical explanation. The church should have insisted that she continue taking her meds even if they proceeded with the exorcism, in order to ensure that all possibilities were covered. I also agree that after 10 exorcisms they should have caught on that something was amiss, at the very least.... This case had a ton of logical explanations that did not include the supernatural... 🤦‍♀️ Great video, I'm a big fan of your content, Jon!! 😊

I'm a Baptist and I agree on all points. I believe possession can happen, but it doesn't happen often, and mental illness should be thoroughly ruled out before seeking exorcism. I also know from experience that mental illnesses can feel like possession especially if they are inadequately treated. (Mine is depression. I'm in a very safe space now).
I think one reason why people still blame the symptoms of mental illness on possession has to do with a particularly Christian view on mental illness, the assumption that it's a faith issue. That if you were a strong enough Christian, you wouldn't be depressed, you wouldn't be dealing with whatever the affliction is. The idea that taking medication for mental illness is like saying God can't heal the person, that it's lack of faith. Now, if the person has very severe symptoms and feels a malevolent presence in their psyche...I mean, there's no way to pray your way out of that, that's undeniable. So the only suitable explanation is demonic possession.

Another Catholic chiming in! I think it says something that the family kept being turned down by religious authorities. The two priests who did these exorcisms don't sound entirely put together.
Also, hearing about her mother's behavior, I think mom may have been schizophrenic and passed it on to her daughter.

I know a priest who had performed an exorcism and he wouldn't speak about it, couldn't get him to say anything apart from the person is ok now and I asked how did you know it wasn't mental illness and he said I got as many specialist to look at them and hoped it was and they all said it wasn't, so he performed the exorcism. But said it was the last option Never the first . Wouldn't even mention if was a male or female nothing. But I appreciate his honesty about going to get medical professionals to look at this person and then got 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th opinions before just doing an exorcism. He left the church few years back because of the church hiding all the abuse cases.
There is psychosomatic conditions like the stigma. Knew a guy came from super religious family and had a mark appear on one of the palms of his hand. Doctor told his parents it was from his belief being so strong it manifests a mark on his palm under the skin. We thought he'd hurt it on purpose or an accident as a kid or something simple that would explain it. But its mad that the mind can react something like that if it's reinforced enough in one's own mind. I think she was a very sick girl with over religious parents who took it too far after they lost one child and it effected her mentally. My she have found peace now.

@@annied1827 to be honest I haven't believed in "god" since I was six. But my mam would drag us to church every Sunday for years till we all have good enough reasons not to go. But this guy was a good person and down to earth. My dad really didn't like the church but would go at Christmas for us and the obvious christenings , weddings and funerals. But he would enjoy this guy's masses. He cracked jokes told stories and just felt like that funny uncle you know? Used church money to bring kids from a disadvantaged background out bowling once every two weeks under one condition they didn't get themselves into trouble. It worked and he'd bring them like 15/20kids just to do something fun . He also swore in church (legend) and would say oh Jesus, oh Jesus Christ oh god Jesus I can't stop burst into laughter and have everyone laughing. But he was really nice to me even tho was straight with him , about not believing in God. But had my own beliefs and he respected that. He baptized my daughter. Told my dad if he can't do it then no one was. Fair play he come all the way from his new parish to baptize her and thanked us for wanting him to do it. He said about the exorcism he didn't like talking about it. One because that person deserved to move on with their life in peace. It's not something he really ever thought he'd ever have to see or do. He believed that in the old days some people where mentally ill and they did perform those rights when it wasn't possession. So he wanted to make sure this person got the help they needed and when they said this isn't what mental illness is. Then he went a head but it takes a lot out of them and the person they perform it on. So he didn't talk about it apart from little bits but would never go in detail. Plus we were teenagers so that might have been a factor. But he wanted to be a priest to help people and he doing that in a different way now.homeless charities and the like. Even came to see my mam after my dad passed to give his condolences. Very decent man.

@@crimsonffire he sounds like a really good guy you have been very lucky to know such a nice guy. I myself am not religious I'm not even christened neither are my kids, only time we go anywherenear a church is the usual weddings, christenings and funerals. If you don't mind me asking if you don't believe why get you child christened ?? It just seems strange to me that as a non believer you would then have your child christened. I had a huge fight with a priest when my daughter was a baby she was born very premature and the hospital priest insisted I was to have her christened as she would go to hell as all babies have to be christened to forgive their sins I did ask what possible sin could a baby have especially one that was in a coma he said immoral sexual thoughts 🤣🤣 which I thought was hilarious and told him well at least she's giving some fun while stuck in a coma. I asked what happened to the babies that were miscarried or still born he said they all went to hell as all babies have immoral sexual thoughts from the time they are conceived told him well if that was the case she can keep all her siblings that I misscarried and that I after all had to treat them all the same lol well that didn't go down well and a few days later I caught him trying to secretly trying to christen her while I wasn't around I walked in on him in the middle of starting to christening her I was furious and threw him out the room throwing his stuff at him and nearly castrated him with his own bible shouting at him if he went anywhere near her again he would be meeting his maker sooner than he'd like !! He was kicked out of the special care unit and it was later found out he'd been christening babies secretly for years 😳
I always find I a little confusing why people christen their children yet they don't believe in god and never go to church. I was invited to a christening once it was the first one I'd been to and I bought the baby a very cute very soft Teddy bear, a children's bible and a really expensive beautiful leather bound bible it was a gorgeous bible as someone who loves books and a book collector I can say this really was a very pretty book and I spent ages looking for a nice suitable gift for the baby as I'd never been to a christening before and wasn't sure what to get. I stupidly assumed since they were having the baby christened they were religious and planned on raising the child to also believe and go to church and Sunday school etc, so I decided I'd look for a really nice special bible for the child which they could use and cherish forever and a kids one to use untill they were old enough to appreciate and care for the nice one , oh how stupid was I when I gave them it they loved the bear saying aww how cute and it's so soft I love it etc and gave it to the child to play with but when they opened the bibles they gave me a look like I'd was stupid and lost the plot this was the conversation
why on earth have you got this for them what a total waste of a gift why would you even buy this, couldn't you think of a better gift than this cheap crappy bible??
Well I thought they would like a special bible of their own so when they are older and start going to church and Sunday school they would have their very own special bible first the kids one, then the special on for when they are older, plus if I do say so my self it's a beautiful copy I'm not religious but even I can appreciate that this is a beautiful bible.
Why would you even think we would be sending them to church and Sunday school ??
Because your having them christened you just said in front of lots of people and priest how your going to teach them the importance of gods teachings etc and I assumed since you have had them christened that's what you belive in and that as they get older you would be taking them to church and Sunday school etc as I assumed that's your belief and that you believe in god since you went to the effort to have them christened
Omg how bloody stupid are you we don't believe in god or any of that crap
Really erm so why have you got them christened then ??
Because when you get your kids christened you get liads of gifts and money for them and it's a good excuse to get together same reason you probably got yours done since you just said your not religious.
my kids are not christened as I said I dont believe in god I assumed since you had them christened you were religious and not just doing this to get gifts and money out of people,
Well why else would anyone have their child christened other than to get free stuff ??
Well most people do it because they believe in it and want to raise their children to also believe in it hence I bought the bibles I'm sorry I misunderstood well they now have a kid bible to read when they get bigger they can use it for school to learn the stories when they start learning about it, they also now own very very nice bible so if they do believe in god in the future they do have a very special and expensive bible to use and treasure and maybe pass onto their own children in the future
Seriously what a total waste of a gift you could have at least bought something we would like and want Well I suppose I could sell it and get some money from it its probably worth £5
While having this conversation the mother of the woman I was talk to was listening she came over furious with her daughter she is actually religious and thought her daughter was having her grandchild christened for the right reasons not just to get gifts and money she asked me to give her the nice bible and toldcher daughter she never expected her to be such a ungrateful bitch yes she said that lol and said she would not let her sell it she looked at the bible and said omg I know where you got this and it is not a as my daughter said cheap or crappy I will not allow her to keep this I will keep this safe for my granddaughter and I will teach her about god if she decides she believes I will give it to her when she's old enough to treasure it if she doesn't believe I will keep it for her to give to her children when she's older and okd enough to understand and appreciate this beautiful gift, as for you, you should be grateful for this beautiful gift this bible is a very special collectors edition and it's worth more than you think if you are so against my granddaughter giving it I will buy it from Ann and you can jyst gave the kids bible and bear after all I've been wanting one if these but I could nit afford it but I'm sure she will aliw me to pay the money in instalments the girl said seriously how much is it worth she looked at me and i said well normally they sell for £80 but they were on black friday sale so I paid £30 tjus us also first edition so will go up in value over the years it the reason I got it thinkjng it can be a family treasure, and I'd be happy for you have it you don't need to pay me, actually I have a idea how about this I gift it to uou its yours until she is old enough to receive it as inheritance that way her mum doesn't have access to it and sell it baby still has gift from me anyway with the bear and kids bible you have this bible as thank you for everything you have done for me and the support you have given me over the years, her daughter did not like that plan as she wanted it to sell but she was told that she did not deserve it and would not get it ever lol her mum accepted my gift and was very emotional as she knew I could have sold it or returned it but I'm glad I gave it her

@@annied1827 that was a lovely and thoughtful present you gave to that child. It's about the child not the parents. Was a lovely thoughtful and kind gift.
I live in Ireland and Christian schools priorities children who are christened over non christened. I personally didn't want her christened ,but my dad (who was adopted) and no gain of the church said look I'm going to be straight with you,you will have a harder time getting her into any school and they will make both your life's different just because of this one little thing that amounts to a piece of paper. She can make her communication and confirmation and then let her decide for herself what she wants to fallow and believe. My dad wasn't religious, but my mother is. So I agreed on the terms only that priest could do it. Because I trusted him and he wouldn't be judgy about it. Was a family Christening so only our family there more relaxed and nice.
She did believe in God till she was around 8/9 and I tried to not sway her let her have her own beliefs and try answer any questions she had. I was young having her to but was always defiant when came to people saying something I in my heart felt was untrue. I have dyslexia and when I was 7/8 was in the church choir the nun called me slow, simple and stupid so explained dyslexia to her and said she should educate herself that's how we learn. Then she said all babies go to purgatory and I said no that's not true they go back to where their souls came from. She said they have sin I pointed out how can something that hasn't taken a breath yet or lived very long sinned? Babies are the most innocent of us. She didn't like that. Then she slapped me in the church,at which point I told her she had no right to touch me and to burn in hell because that was a sin and I wouldn't be coming back and stormed home 🤣 my mother was horrified (for all the wrong reasons) my dad just said good girl you where right. Im Agnostic I have my own beliefs I don't put them on others and I respect others choice to be religious or have their own beliefs too. Once they're not hurting anyone. My daughter has friends who are very religious and they gave her a teen Bible for one of her birthdays and she thanked her friend for it and added it to her book collection. We are all connected and should care about each other. But when priests and nuns have done awful awful things to the people of your country you can't idly stand by. I agree with you. Just this country is only now doing non religious schools and schools can't stop a child attending based on religious ,in this day and age. We still fighting for this policy for non religious run hospitals ,it's crazy. Because if heaven forbid you found out your baby had died in the womb , some hospitals here would make you go full term because they won't preform an abortion. The trauma that poor woman is put under isn't right. But these people don't care because a pope, priest or book said no. My heart goes out to them all who go through that. It is getting better, people talking back and fighting for these human rights we should all have. Because religion ruled Ireland not the government for far too long.
Your baby's are all together waiting for you when you're reading to be with them again xx I do believe that xx

As a Christian, I blame the Catholic church. The notion that people need to suffer to save themselves or others from their sins is absolutely contrary to the gospel, which tells us Jesus suffered for the sins of all. But it was that belief, held so firmly by Anneliese and her parents, that led to her suffering, and the exorcisms that eventually ended her life.

This is so depressing. Annelise’s family messed her up so badly- it’s so hard to believe that she genuinely thought she was suffering for everyone in the world.
Something similar happened to my great aunt- quite literally around the same time too. My great aunt had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in the mid 60s. My family was very religious, they still are ( save for me, I’m an atheist/agnostic ) and apparently she did have medication but obviously whatever they had back then was not nearly enough for help her. Eventually my great grandma ( her mom)’s family began to think she was possessed, so they literally got their priest to die her down and do an exorcism on her. They said my aunt was as there for hours screaming and crying her lungs out- and that their neighbors literally called the police because they thought someone was being murdered. Eventually my aunt broke out of the restraints and tried to run away, she jumped over a fence into their neighbor’a backyard.
My great aunt passed away in 2014, but Ive witnessed some of her schiz episodes before and they were very scary for me ( a kid at the time ) to witness. Now that I’m a lot older though, I think it’s really sad. When my grandma told me that story, I literally told her that my great aunt was probably terrified out of her mind, and she obviously didn’t have good medication.
What pisses me off the most is that my remaining family who knew her- still believes that she was possessed and they didn’t see anything wrong with exorcisms, or what they did to her.

I actually really like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, it’s my favorite exorcism movie. I don’t usually like the Quentin Tarentino style of film (jumping back and forth in the timeline) but I found this one easy to keep up with. I really liked this portrayal of the story, it’s much more in depth than others who’ve covered it and truer to the actual timeline (as far as we’re aware)

I consider myself a nondenominational Christian, and I believe in the validity of demonic possession. However, I also believe in the validity of mental illness, and I think that this poor girl was suffering from some form of psychosis. I also believe that true demonic possession rarely happens. Maybe a few cases a lifetime, I think, are legit.

I agree 100%. I'm a Catholic by raising and affiliation and believe in the Catholic doctrine not the religion. There's a reason I make the distinction and it is because religion itself is flawed because men are flawed, certainly believing in a religion taught by the same men who harm children is a good reason to make the separation. That said, I agree with you that a true demonic possession is rare, after all our free will, true free will, means we have to invite the energy, accept it, make ourselves vulnerable to the seduction, and allow it to take hold of us every bit as we invite God to do the same. HE made us that way after all because God did not want servants but true children who love him freely. More often than not "possession" is a scape goat answer for a mental illness or brain trauma that is not treated correctly or well understood as it has been since basically the dawn of time and that is what happened here, especially when you hear that the girl CHOSE to do this willingly for the suffering of others. If true possession, then she invited the demons within her and kept them but more likely had a mental illness and also believed that by suffering so much she was saving other people's souls

I can’t help thinking of Jennet Device and the Pendle Witches. She was so convinced her curse had caused the paralysis (likely a stroke) of the pedlar man passing her, she confessed to witchcraft and just about every witchy crime you can imagine, knowing full well she’d be killed. She also implicated others. It reminds me of Anneliese believing she was suffering for others’ salvation. I shudder to think how many people could have gone through absolute horror, willingly, because they had an undiagnosed mental illness and believed it was the only way to save their, or another’s, soul.😔

I'd heard about this on Coast To Coast decades ago. There were always details left out to make it sound more supernatural than it was. The universe they present to their listeners is pure fantasy, and it probably steers people who need help with their mental health away from care.

I can't help but point out the huge red flags I noticed from her past that were mentioned and no one has really addressed in depth here:
    1. Her mom subjected her daughter Annaliese and her other children from a very young age to a clear form of abuse. Her mom forced them to undergo several sadistic situations in order to "atone" for other peoples "sins"... Wtf?! I'm sorry but that is clearly abuse and a messed up form of practicing religion. From my experience, that is not even close to what religion is or should be. That is delusional insanity and it disgusts me when I see evil pyscopaths disguise this kind of mental, emotional, and physical abuse as religion to justify it and get away with it.
    2. She was sent to a sanitarium and came back with a completely changed personality. Remember this was 50 years ago when there have been many confirmed accounts of severe abuse happening to patients behind closed doors in those places.
    3. She was a mental case severely traumatized by the people around her to the point that she became extremly afraid and triggered of any representations of "religion" or religious associations. I think that should tell you something.
    4. How do you scare away your abuser? You attack the core of their beliefs by using a representation of something they fear the most and use it against them. She was trying to get away from whatever they were forcing onto her and her mind selected the closest thing that it knew best to scare them away: demons.
    5. The local priest she mentioned was another red flag. First ask yourself why would someone associate a priest with something evil?... Unless you had a bad experience with them? I don't about you but that is a bit suspicious. Could there have been some kind of sexual abuse implied? Who really knows, but it wouldn't be the first time this sort of thing happened.
    6. Both her parents and religious leadership subjected her to stress, starvation, abuse and neglect to the point that she just lost her mind and soul.
This girl is a victim of abuse and insanity instilled by her parents and community. This is an extremely sad ending for her. Her passing may have been the only peace to keep her from living through the horrors she could have continued to endure behind closed doors alive. Abuse coupled with psycologicol illness has some very scary consequences, we almost never know what victims truly go through behind the scenes.

Once upon a time I was deep in evangelical Christianity. My husband (at the time) and I were having a fight and it went on for hours. I mean hours. (It wasn’t a good relationship). At one point I just felt this growing pain in my head like it weighed a thousand pounds. It got so painful so fast I thought my head would explode. I started yelling at my husband to help me(he ignored me) so I ran over to him and pounded on his chest. He did nothing and claimed that he would “take this beating the way Christ took his”. I curled up in a ball on the ground and screamed out into the carpet. I swear I saw I my minds eye: Angels came down. Putting swords between me and him, guarding me in a circle. I did that till I passed out, thinking surely this is where I die. Years later. (I meanYEARS LATER) I’ve deconstructed from Christianity, gotten a divorce. And learned I have a panic disorder. I had a panic attack. Religion exacerbated them. I now have a therapist and coping skills.

From the description given about her personality and overall demeanor prior to her suffering, I get the feeling that she wouldn't blame anyone even if she had maintained the cognitive ability to do so. It just sounds to me like she was a very kind, caring, and compassionate person.
When you add in the belief that she was meant to suffer on top of her strong religious beliefs, I imagine she would've been more likely to forgive and forget so to speak. I wouldn't know for sure and I'm taking a shot in the dark, but that's just the impression I get. Either way, I can't help but mourn the loss.

There is only one frustration I have with your channel. I've enjoyed many of your videos but didn't actually subscribe until the last few days... And for that oversight, I apologize as you deserve all the subscribers for your great and well researched videos.
When I was growing up, mental illness was not seen as an actual illness. The general public saw 'crazy' as just a nebulous problem with people and to have someone in the family that was crazy was a great way to get knocked down the social order. So, it was almost always hidden. Since this was the 70s, I can see the poor girl extremely abused in that sanitorium and convinced her everything they did was to help her. The fact that her story came out to the public alone is telling about how bad her situation was since, even in Germany at the time, the family would receive nothing but gossip and whispers and not be invited to any church functions. In other words, the parents would become extreme in their attempts to "Fix" their daughter because of the pressures of their society. So here's my personal list of contributing factors:
    Brain damage
Mental, physical, and emotional abuse during her formative years
Mental, physical, and emotional abuse at the sanitorium while trying to recover from seriously bad illnesses.
Further mental and emotional abuse from family and friends.
More abuse from the "Exorcists experts.'
... And during all the exorcisms... Medical/phycological help was not constantly sought by either the priests or the family.
If there is a devil, then that character used the girl to REALLY have fun. Personally, I firmly believe the girl was tortured and allowed to die through a complete lack of real and legitimate care.

    2. They seeked medical treatment before and during the exorcisms one of the priest brought over a friend of his who was a doctor and he said quote "there are no injections for the devil" after looking at her condition
3.her parents wanted to feed her but did not want to force her to eat which is her medical right
4.she had abnormal strength for someone of starvation she could squeeze an apple with one hand and make it purst into fragments and took more then three people to hold her down and had thrown her family members around the room like ragdolls
    5. She gave very detailed description of fleischmann which even being a Catholic she wouldn't have known about because he had been kicked out of the church for dealing with devil worship supposedly and his records were private by the church
