- How to modify your heater for GSM, letting you turn it on and off from anywhere in the world using your mobile!
GSM Relay was supplied by www.gsm-uk.net who I highly recommend.
Buy at their web store here: www.gsm-uk.net...
Or search eBay UK for 'GSM Relay 2019'.
your chinese heater vids inspired me to order one for my campervan...im not a 4x4 guy but your vids are very good..thank you
Thanks for the comment Gary, I'm glad the effort I put in is appreciated by my viewers 👍🏻.
Mate your a godsend! I thought i had to figure all this out on my own.
Great video pal, hope you gets loads of hits, thanks for sharing my GSM on your Video, much appreciated
No worries! The other two I did on the Chinese heaters got over 20k views each - so hopefully this one follows suit.
Hello I would like to buy one of these relays for my heater
Cool video and you have same multimeter from maplins and soldering iron from screwfix ha
very nice job, it would great for a remote control if you want to turn it on from inside your house so you wouldn't have to go into your cold workshop. also those superseal connectors are aka Delphi. we use a lot of them at work. I had an idea that to know if it is working, is to have a amp gauge to to know it is drawing amps.
Echo on audio from 25:21 (off at 26:16 !) - otherwise excellent video - thankyou !
Top job and top video as always Sam!! Got a GSM-Start relay (Swedish product, basically the same as yours but way more expensive for some reason) for my Webasto water heater in my D130 and it’s great. Don’t have a Chinese heater yet but seems like good value there. I’ll check out your GSMrelay supplier and see if he delivers to Sweden and if it’s possible to change SIM. Could always use it for something fun.. :)
Thanks! I'm sure James will be happy to send to Sweden. Definitely drop him a line, he's a really helpful chap.
sorry for late reply, what Webasto you have and did you manage to connect it and make it work?
@@nutnaa Didn't end up buying a extra GSMrelay but I have my GSM-Start relay connected to the Webasto Thermo Top C (5 kW), if that's what you're wondering about?
@@KS-wr8ub thought so, pointless buying extra relay. I also have VW t5 factory installed Top C and finding some way to started from my phone while still snowboarding. 😬
For those who are getting worried about 2g being turned off, we now have gsm relays which handle 2g, 3g and 4g, ready in 2 weeks 😁
Brilliant vid made it very easy to do thanks.
Old video and a great one but did you ever look into using a smart relay with Alexa to turn the heater on
Thanks! There’s no reason you couldn’t do this, the relay is just acting as a switch at the end of the day. You can control the switch any way you like!
Very cool idea on how to turn it on and off saw this come up on my sub box the other day and when I went to watch it it went off, did you leave your phone number on by accident 😂😂
Yes I left the number uncovered! Technically it's secure (only I can operate it) but I didn't want to take the chance! Haha!
Nice video. I’m thinking the second relay could be used for the bobil water heater.
Fantastic 👏 👏 thanks for the great video 👍
Thanks for your information. I bought one for my camper trailer, I'm interested in what other mods people can do with them to make them either more safe and or up to where the more expensive competition.
Good video! Thank you! But if i only have +12v input? Can i make it work? (GSM-controlled relay on/off)
Hi Sam, I have now a Temperature GSM if you wish to try one ? it is read only but soon could be used to control temperature and feedback via your phone, I have the working temperature from -20Deg C to +50 Deg C
Any more details?
@@TheRowbot Not enough interest in the Temp GSM so canned it
I'm just about to start doing this myself, but I have stalled at the one bit you don't cover. How do you open the case of the later, five button controller? In your video you start with it already open and I can't see and screw heads. I don't want to force it open and risk breaking something.
It’s been a long time since I fiddled with these but from what I remember you have to peel off the front sticker/decal to reveal the screws.
@@SamsMotors That worked. Thanks!
Hi Sam,
Thanks for your video. Can you please give me more information or details to connect the GSM Opener with the first panel, the analog Knob Controller? The "ON" button isn't a problem, I don't understand the "OFF" Button works. Do you have for this wire connection in the relay a photo or a little diagram?
Thanks
Greetings from Germany
Moritz
Is the the current 12v in the orange and white connectors you connect to the "on switch"?
hi, wondered if you can help. I have the rotary controller with dual gsm. I wired my off switch to relay 2, I can turn the heater on by text but not off. any ideas? thanks
Can you imagine sending a text message to your diesel heater to turn on today in late 2022?
Why not?
do they make a relay box, for all 5 buttons. Also is there a way to send the data stream to your phone?
Nice video with an interesting solution, thanks. I've got a heater with the same digital controller and LCD remote as you were showing in your 2 previous videos. Now you're using 2 different controllers. Does that mean the GSM solution doesn't work with the more modern (blue) one?
Hi, thanks. The GSM will work fine with the blue controller, as it's essentially the same as the black LCD just with the switches moved around.
Hi Sam
Might have a go at doing this, understood the wiring in the heater control panel, and saw where you put the white wire in the GSM module, but which of the other 2 terminals did you place the orange wire, didn't quite understand your comments about placing them in open switch/closed switch?
Does the GSM module come with Sim card?
I have the white alloy cased heater with blue controller, although not set up yet in my workshop,am I right in thinking blue controller is single on/off button?
Great videos,keep them coming!
Thanks for the comment.
The relays in the GSM module have a normally open and normally closed terminal, we use the normally open one as we want to close the 'switch' when the relay is activated.
And yes the sim card is supplied. The blue controller is 1 button yes so exactly the same principle as the black LCD.
The GSM controller requires a second phone line with a GSM carrier... correct(?)
It needs its own sim card, yes.
Where did you get your relay from . The one you mentioned James?
What cable have you used cheers
Another excellent video.. I have the white heater like the other one you have. Do you plan to connect the blue control panel to a gsm device also?
Thanks! Yes I will be modifying the blue controller as well. Will be the same principle but the button is just in a different location.
Buy link?
Hi Sam
Thank you for reply, just ordered one from the link you gave, just so I understand it, can you tell me what terminal in the GSM module you connected your Orange wire?
Hi Marek, you need to connect to the C and NO terminals. Doesn't matter which way round your wires go.
Sam! Any progress on the 130?
Hi, I take it you only need the single relay version module? Just wondered why yours was a double?
Hi Mark, the double relay is needed if you use the rotary controller with separate on and off buttons, but yes if you have an LCD you can just use a single relay version.
@@SamsMotorsThanks for clearing that up.
Can i use my own simcard instead of the one suplied? Is this working with other mobile networks?
Yes you can.
will this work with Webasto thermo top c unit?
If you can figure out how to wire it up, definitely
What crimping tool you using for the connectors?
It's just a reasonably cheap open butt crimper from Amazon.
I cant find the link to James shop, can you repost please
www.gsm-uk.net
👍
Hi Sam, you know if there is a working app fro iphone that can be used?
Not as far as I know, sorry
I can’t find the GSM Control by Zoran either😳
Now...this is dangerous....I'm a muppet and am now thinking I want to copy this for my chinese heater that I've just installed 🤔 One question though, I have the rotary controller so am I right in thinking I have to connect 2 wires from 1 button to 1 relay then another 2 from the other button to the other relay?
That's right, one for on and one for off!
Will the heater still work with the remote control?
Yes remote control operation is unaffected
@@SamsMotors I'm just wondering if this GSM module can be used to track a stolen vehicle. It would add an extra level of security to my Defender.
@@barrykerr2346 Hi Barry, it doesn't have any GPS capability so that would be a no unfortunately
@@SamsMotors Hope you don't mind I've shared your video on a Facebook group.
@@barrykerr2346 On the contrary, the more shares the better!
Remember me
When you say made in uk you mean assembled in uk? All I can see in it is Chinese. ;)
Designed, Programmed and Built in UK !! Your TV will be from China and all your electronics in your Car !! 🤫
These you can buy cheap from china👌 And just think about the applications were you can use this.. Lights, cameras, bombs, fireplace etc.. endless of opportunities 😊
GSM 2G network to be taken down soon, as 5G comes online. All your decices listed are 2G.
Apparently they have been taking it down since 2018 but they are still working ? If we find the sim800L does not work anymore we shall replace with the latest 4g sim gsm.
Do you have to pay a monthly fee for the phone number?
No it's a free pay as you go sim card, and as it doesn't need to send any messages itself, it doesn't need any credit either.
So you have to pay monthly to use your remote waste of money and time you can upgrade your heater controller to digital and set a timer to turn on or off at a set time. And set the temp for u.s.d 20.00 I have the digital controller and it came with a remote.
No you don't. The SIM is free, doesn't need a monthly payment and doesn't need any credit to work.
And the digital controller you speak of does not allow proper timing, only a set number of hours. So unlike my solution you cannot tell it to come on at certain times, certain days etc. Please do some research before commenting in the future :)
I own the same heater 5000kw with the digital display and I only had mine a little over a month now as far as setting it for certain days your correct mine do t do that but I do have mine to come on at 5:30 am and shutoff at 11:30 am and it does that daily as long as I don't unplug it or it runs out of fuel it has been working great during this polar vortex and some below 0 weather the temp is set to 3.0 and what ever speed I set is were it comes back on too. Now I'm not saying your idea is bad I can definitely use that device on other items. Around here and in the u.s.a we have to pay monthly on a phone chip weather we use the phone or not.
