This week Jonny and Brad are in St Pete & Clearwater, Florida! This beautiful piece of paradise in Tampa Bay is famous for its white sand and sunsets, but should also be known for it's AMAZING brewing scene. In the first of a four part series, we explore the region's own beer style - a heavily fruited sour beer known as Florida Weisse - and the incredible people behind it.

Thanks for visiting Pinellas county. We're very proud of our brewing scene here. I love being a part of the brewing culture and I hope you guys had a great time. Cheers!
We had the ABSOLUTE BEST TIME. The places, the people, the beer, the beaches, the art, the Cuban sandwiches. What a part of the world. We'll be back.
Pro tip: watch movies at flixzone. Been using it for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Troy Rayan yea, have been using Flixzone for years myself :D
@Troy Rayan Yup, have been watching on flixzone for since december myself :)
There is already a bjcp style developed in brazil, its called catharina sour!
You all need to go down to Portland OR. We have 300ish breweries in the state and multiple mostly sour beer places. They all try to stay in state, so word might not spread, but the scene is great!
Great work. As a Tampanian here, you really did a great job on your homework on where to visit! Thank you for a beautiful video!!
Means a lot from a resident, lots more to come too, including our highlight of the trip - Green Bench!
The Craft Beer Channel Khris at GB is just so incredibly well-versed in the Intricacies of beer and brewing, I look very forward to seeing that episode! Cheers!
awesome work as usual!
I absolutely love (and know) every single one of the breweries/peeps you talked to!!! Amazing video. Great job.
Wicked clip lads what a brilliant scene!
Great..very inspiring!
Great video, looks an amazing place to visit.
Ahhh! I live here and have been to all those breweries! Love the sour scene here in Pinellas County.
Excellent.
I've always wanted to go to Florida for the Everglades, now I also need to go for some kick ass sours! Great video highlighting a scene I'd never really heard of.
Another great video, makes me thirsty just watching. The beers look so good. Inspiration to try news brews. Thanks guys, keep em coming.
Awesome!! Inspired me to make an fruitbeer😀 great job guys🍻🤘
Perfect timing 😍 planing to make my first kettle sour soon so alot of inspiriaton here. If it turns out better than my accidental sour saison im happy 👌
Me going to St Pete's is all your fault boys! (kinda) Great videos, hoping to enjoy it as much as you did.
Hey, you showed my street art, thanks! xoxo
Awesome thanks for swinging by! The street art scene there is incredible. Lots more footage of it coming in our video next week.
So happy that you took this deep dive (including your other videos) into the Pinellas Country beer scene! If you come back to the area, check out the breweries in the City of Tampa. Hidden Springs Ale Works has taken the sour scene by storm here. And of course, I’m sure you have Cigar City Brewing on your radar. And Thrillist recently named Angry Chair the best brewery in Florida.
Production value on this series is way better than it needs to be. Great content.... Cheers!
Haha. Thanks, always trying to up our game and compete with the wine world, which gets all the budget.
Debine is so close to me in palm harbor. Next time check out tarpon for Greek food and for silver king brewing and two frogs brewing!
Killing it! Been trying to work out the best time to add fruit. This gives a great insight :)
Great to know! We were amazed to hear Devon say she used them whole just before serving.
Gonna have to go to Florida, who would've thought that they would have so many cool breweries!
I know right?! We were blown away!
Awesome Video! Glad to see you enjoying Tampa Bay's beer scene and sharing it with the world. If you are still in town I would have to encourage you to visit Ulele Spring Brewery. Would love to show you around and share some of our beers with you!
Sadly we are long gone but we will 100% be back some time soon. We had a fantastic time.
Miami Weisse is too perfect 🤣
Great video!
Just shocked nobody mentioned J Wakefield.
I’m a South FL craft drinker since 2011. Wakefield and PEGs Cantina (Cycle) were the first to do these.
From my understanding, Wakefield is the father of the Floridaweisse
So the story we have found and had backed up is that the first Florida Weisse - so kettle wheat sour with enough sweet fruit to balance the acidity - was brewed by Cigar City in collab with Jonathan Wakefield back when he was homebrewer. So they share the honour of brewing the first. Most of the guys we spoke to were ex-Cigar City brewers. In fact, most of the amazing St Pete/Clearwater scene is born out of ex-CC brewers!
The Craft Beer Channel CCB and Rapp Brewing!
Yes, what Craft beer channel said is true, but yes, most people give J Wakefield credit for developing the first, but he is notoriously, umm, we will say, not the most friendly person in the industry. I would give 7th Sun, CCB, Coppertail, Cycle, and Rapp much credit as well.
Great video guys! Look forward to your other videos on the area as well. It was also great meeting you when you were here! I just made a Passion Fruit Florida Weisse myself, which turned out awesome. Cheers 🍻
hey! Yeah it was good to meet you - I think you snuck into the 7venth Sun bit in the vid!
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Yeah, sorry about that. I was there on my laptop doing a bit of work then you guys came out to interview and started and I realized I was in the shot so tried to keep my head down
Come back and hit Miami. Your missing amazing Sours in Miami from J Wakefield and Spanish Marie.
As a sour beer lover it is great to hear the backstory of this sub style. Kettle sours can be divisive beers but done right they are sublime. Brick are the best at it in the UK for me
PS I now need to add Florida to my beer destination list, so thanks for that!
Haha you are welcome! If you love beaches and beer I dunno where could be better...san diego perhaps.
Florida Weisse is so similar to brazilian Catharina Sour style. Both are near to be added to BJCP
They are indeed. Eyeing up a trip to Brazil now!
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Awesome! there are so many good breweries and brewers here. There is only one big problem: Brazil is like USA, a continental country with a huge latitudinal extension. Here where I live in south now is near 9ºC and in north is 30ºC. This diferences bring us a enormous numeber of styles and beers. Ifo you come to south (Porto Alegre - there are to many breweries here) visit "Taberna MF" in Gramado. They have about 100 taps with own beers (blends, lambics, wood aged).
Nice video guys! I just recently found your channel. I actually own a craft beer bar and restaurant about an hour from there thought this was a great representation of the Florida beer scene. Nice work!
Wow thanks so much Michael! Great to hear that from a local. We hope to come back some day. We absolutely loved the area.
You guys are great. I always look forward to your videos. Will you be attending LCBF this weekend?
hey! We will. We're there Friday and Saturday and doing live shows both days.
It'll be great to see you guys check out the Australian beer scene. Breweries like Prancing Pony with their India Red Ale and Willie the Boatman with their Old Salty Melon Gose are really taking Australian brewing to a new level.
We would love to, but it's so far away! One day we WILL come.
Is it just a berliner weisse with fruit? They've been popping up in the UK from time to time for a few years.
Pretty much, though it seems the style is also about balance - so a much lower acidity than a Berliner would probably have. We've seen a few in the UK for sure, but seems to have started out here around 2012-13.
Have you visited cigar city>?
Hey guys if you come to South Florida hit me up I can hook you up at some really good breweries there are some really great breweries down here also I have a 1966 Cadillac convertible so we will be traveling in style
So I guess the Miami Weiss I had in the Waterloo Tap in March fits into this style. Can't remember the Brewery or the fruit in it, just remember the name....
Seems to be an homage to the style, happening all over the world now.
So it's a basically Catharina Sour.. brazilian style
Very similar it would seem!
can we get any of the beers from these nice breweries in the UK?
Sadly not as they are too small right now however 7venth Sun have just done a collab beer with Queer Beer Brewing Project so there will be a small amount of that around the uk!
@@TheCraftBeerChannel nice!!
7:40
It looks like you guys are in an elevator around 8:40. Cheers.
hahaha - an elevator with a brewery would be some next level skyscraper.
So is a Florida Weisse just a kettle sour with an occasional twang?
I have no idea what you mean by occasional twang...
I'll have to give Joe and Dan a big high 5 tomorrow. Not sure how the list was decided on or when it was recorded but the list was missing an amazing hidden gem brewery. Good list though. I know people from two of the breweries pretty well.
Who did we miss!?

You lost me when you said you were in Clearwater and you’re actually sitting in Palm Harbor
Never understood the appeal of sour beers, if you drink more than one it nukes your entire palate.
How strange - I think most people see it the other way and use sours (particularly ones without fruit) to cleanse their palate between big hoppy or roasted beers! We certainly do.
