  • When should You mow new seedlings? In todays video I'll answer that question…
When new grass seed initially starts to sprout, it will appear scattered . However, this is a sign that you have prepared your soil, planted the grass seed, and enabled it to germinate - not an easy task 🙂
In a matter of weeks, this will produce a tangle of healthy, lush grass blades. Although it might be tempting, you must avoid cutting your young grass until is firmly established itself in the soil.
In most instances, a minimum 4 weeks must pass (after the seeds have germinated) before you can begin thinking about mowing.
Your mower needs to have sharp blades cutting across the grass so that the turf is not ripped . Maintaining a 2 or 3 inch height is ideal for a healthy lawn.
You want to allow it to dry for at least 48 hours When the blades of grass are allowed to dry, it creates the ideal conditions for your mower to make clean cuts.
Cut only one third of the grass height away at a time, you may have to mow the grass repeatedly to bring it down to a more manageable 2- to 3 inch height. Give a couple days in between cuts…
While bagging cut grass isn't always necessary, I definitely recommend bagging clippings when your lawn is still young. There's a good chance that grass clippings will smother newly sprouted grass seeds. Leftover grass clippings can also create the perfect home for fungi and disease.
Put the clippings in the compost pile!!!😄
if you mow too soon, the mower's wheels and blades simply pull grass sprouts out of the ground, rather than simply cutting them and the mower wheels can also compact the soil.
My favorite test is to simply try to pull the new grass up, if it has no resistance, wait another week.
As you walk the mower across the lawn, use slow turns so that your wheels do not accidentally pinch the turf and pull it away from the soil if you can try to make your turns away from the new seedlings
It will usually take a full year for your lawn to fill in completely. Shady areas will take longer than full sun areas. Some areas may be too shady to ever fill in completely. In those cases, seeding may be necessary yearly. In other cases, a shade tolerant ground cover other than grass may be a more appropriate solution.
I will see you next time!! Bye 👋
