This public service video has dethroned my all time favorite, “Reefer Madness” ! But Nick, don’t hesitate to buy a second mechanical because of the need to keep both wound. If you just buy a $300 watch winder to go with each one, then there is no limit to how many you can keep running. Just be sure to buy the expensive lithium batteries for the winders. Oh, and remember to buy a really large and expensive safe to keep them in, preferably one with a motorized circular shelf to make your daily selection easier. Although you may need a larger residence for the safe, or to at least reinforce the floors. Uhh, don’t forget the special jewelry insurance policy, since you have exceeded normal homeowner policy limits. You can save a little on the insurance if you have an expensive alarm system installed or hire a 24-7 guard service. But if all this sounds too time consuming, you can get to the same ultimate future state by throwing a few clothes and some cardboard in an old shopping cart and going straight away to live with the last generation of former watch collectors under the freeway overpass who can be heard calling out to passers by: “Hey buddy, can you tell me what time it is?”
Nick you are the greatest human to ever make a RUclips video! Through that whole video I was laughing my head off! You’re hilarious. Although unfortunately I have already gotten in to watches. I have not gone much up the ladder like I have on knives but I already know it’s going to happen. Nick, I have a problem.
If only I'd watched this video 3 years ago (eh, watched, eh? Never mind) I'd have saved myself a lot of sorrow and would probably have (at least) a new bathroom by now. There is truth in this video. I'm just saying.
I wish someone had given me this advice earlier. Now I'm here wearing a watch that I cannot afford on an expensive strap that I can also not afford. However, my cardboard box is actually pretty warm at night.
"Folks it's 10 grand!!" And " no one would do crack if it felt like getting kicked in the nuts" two of my favorites Nick shabazz quotes in one video lol.
This came 2 weeks too late. I just bought a Soviet mechanical dive watch, and I love it. I can already tell I'm falling down the rabbit hole (Just like with knives when I first started watching this channel). Thanks for nothing Nick! ...Keep up the good work.
Vostok is the gateway drug to mechanical watch addiction. Don't be like me! A year from now when you've got a Hamilton, Orient, or Seiko, you'll look at your Vostok like it was the cheap toy at the bottom of a Crackerjack box. Beware!
This is going to be good because you have been spoiled by good, modern watches. Prediction: you will not like this watch. The best way to appreciate a Vostok is to understand that they've been making the same watch since the '60s to the super-cheap requirements of the Soviet military. The designers had to spin straw into gold and by golly they did it -- but by comparison with modern watches, they are a bit sad.
I refuse to spend high dollars for older technology that is inaccurate and overpriced. Solar powered quartz with atomic or gps time sync is my path with Casio, seiko, or citizen.
@@Kaleb.R No, I told a family member about my interest in watches and he gifted me 4 of them. There is one watch I want though, I want a custom picture on the face of my watch but the only company that I found that does this Zazzle, won't put the picture I want on the watch because they say the image is copyrighted.
I like the digi you referred as the beater. Did the fancy black faced no numbers shown back some years. Nothing on my wrist since. My ph slides from pocket to hand and there’s all my needs filled.
I always watch this video whenever I have an urge to get a new watch. It does help me in having a more logical outlook. For somebody who has spent a fortune on watches in the past, I am very grateful for this. Really... I am.
Nick, you're right. I'm switching now from an automatic TH to Quartz probably Oceanus. After 7 years with an automatic I realised what I really need from a watch
Love the video Nick, very entertaining.... OK, a serious comment here.... If you think about your argument here, basically everything that your saying applies to any sort of "higher end" COLLECTING of things, of recognized "collectable things" Think about it... ART (paintings, sculpture, etc.), KNIFES, GUNS, ANTIQUES, etc. all go crazy high in price for diminishing returns. What you seem to be missing Nick is the art and joy of collecting!!!!!! The world would be a boring place if EVERYTHING was valued, sought after, etc was based purely on a cost and function ratio Granted you made a point similar to mine toward the end of the video... i mean the "joy" of collecting came across in the humorous approach that you took... BRAVO Nick, BRAVO
I think the point was mostly the price factor. In knives $100 can get you some really nice quality, full function, will last forever pieces. In high quality watches, $100 (when buying new) is 100% chump change; rather, you catch yourself thinking things like '$500 for that piece, that's an absolute steal!' or 'Sure, 1200 dollars is a little pricey, but...' , or 'A so-an-so (brand name here) for less than 3 grand? You'd be crazy not to get one!'
Thanks Nick. I sent this video to my buddy Ed who I believe has a watch problem. He’s been trying to get me into watches too. Again, thanks Nick… and like you said, he’s already into watches so he’ll probably just become a subscriber....
Your best video yet, academy award material. Some day you'll want a enamel dial with raised indices too, left that out. But there's nothing like being in a meeting, getting drubbed, everything going absolutely tits up, and looking at your fabulous little wrist buddy and feeling comforted and momentarily lost in its elegant beauty. It's like a Valium substitute for those who prefer to just say no to drugs. Best wishes for you collection going forward, I'm off to my watch Jeweler to fondle a Grand Seiko divers watch, my two tone bluesy getting a bit long in tooth and now silver's in fashion anyway. Onwards and upwards...
My grandmother gave me my grandfather’s pocket watch and that’s how I got started. The ticking sound is my favorite sound in the world. I watch your channel for the watches but I do check out flashlights and knives from time to time. I never laughed so hard. Sad but true. You sir have a gift!
You hit the bullseye with this one. Just came from a comment section arguing whether watches are just fashion statements rather than tools and most of your arguments have convinced me that watches are not practical choices nowadays.
I love this video. Over the last year or so my love of watches has gone from an f91w to a Casio royale to a Casio Tough Solar to a Citizen Eco Drive which I picked up the other day. And I'm still not satisfied, I want an automatic 😭
Hi Nick. Long time subscriber here, watched this video when it came out. Just bought my first watch, Casio Oceanus 7000d-7a. Thanks for trying, I stayed away for a good while I guess.
The addiction you're talking about is why I start buying things with an end state in mind; so I buy the "beater version", see if I like it, then I appreciate the better feature more. Then I research and buy versions to meet certain needs, so for watches, I'd get a solar powered beater, A running watch, and a dressy watch. If I want to upgrade, I HAVE to put the old one up for sale till it's sold. Just my personal way, love the videos! researching is the most fun part of collecting in my opinion.
I wear a $200 citizen diver. I started off with a $40 casio. I loved my casio and I currently love my citizen. I have stuck to budget watches and in this range it seems more focused on function. I do really appreciate and drool over some beautiful higher end watches simply for the artistry and craftsmanship.
good advice, glancing at the $1,200 on my right wrist is a nice thing, but holy crap guys, how did i even wind up getting this deep? all i even got out of it was solar charging, a nice dressy look and gps time setting (mostly that last one).
I have only just now come to this hilarious, but veeery true warning. You really hit me where it hurts and it was all on the point. I did not care for watches and did not wear any until two years ago. Now I have 50 of them. I have already sold 10 but each time I sell one, I see another two that look fabulous and that I really cannot live without. I try to resist the urge to buy new watches by looking at negative reviews on them. You dissuaded me from buying the Longines VHP, thanks for that! The other strategy is to compare them with similar watches I already own and convincing myself that I don't need to buy the new one since the old one is just as nice and good. At least that strategy has become way easier now that I bought a ton of watches. I am looking forward to your next watch reviews!
If it makes you feel better, I picked up that Citizen you had on the table because you said it had great lum. I never wore a watch before, but I needed one for third shift work when I can't have my phone, and it's been perfect for me. So your pain has done good for the world! Atleast for me, anyway.
I jumped in...not high end but I did. First it was a cheap waterproof solar watch from Amazon, then a Asus Zenwatch 2, now I'm looking at something a little nicer. I see exactly what your talking about.
Nick, you are a truly singular talent. Absolutely brilliant video. Oddly enough, the Apple Watch, in retrospect, has been my gateway drug. Didn’t wear a watch for years but now craving mechanicals like the Tudor Pelagos, Sinn and Stowa pilots, and IWC whatever’s. Hopefully this malady will go no further than the Scurfa Bell Diver 1 I received a few days ago-first mechanical I’ve had since childhood.
Got my citizen eco drive pet your recommendation, think I’ll just get one good daily use dive watch and a bracelet to dress it up for when I wanna look pretty. Much love my guy, always appreciate you. -Maxie
I bought the Citizen BM8180-03E (third from left with green strap) on your recommendation and it's haunted. No matter what I do I cannot get the day/date to change at midnight. I've sat waiting for midnight and changed the day/date the minute the second hand gets to the twelve and later, at half past three in the afternoon, it's registering the next day/date!! It does keep excellent time though.
I really enjoy your videos! Thanks for this one. ☺ I wonder how many non-watch collectors will watch this video and think, "hmmm... I wonder what the big deal is?" and thereby start their journey into watch collecting... The sweet irony of it! 😉
keifer225948 I hear you! I've already fallen down the fountain pen rabbit hole, and even sticking with pens under $200 each, it's more than I can afford!
Im not really into watches much anyway. Mine's got Mickey Mouse on it, and the ladies LOVE Mickey. That said who really needs fancy watches. Then again I saw a cool Bugs Bunny one the other day... Oh no...the addiction has begun!
You, my friend, are a national treasure. Thank you for your refreshingly honest perspective...and for potentially saving me thousands of dollars! RUclips needs more channels like yours. Consider me a subscriber as of today.
Thanks for making this video Nick, I couldn’t agree more with you on this. You start to feel like you’re the only one that’s not crazy after getting into watches and reading forum posts and sites like hodinkee.
yep!! had to have the 3rd gen orient bambino awsome watch by the way, the exact same day i recieved it i was on line looking at the tissot powermatic 80. now its on the way.ITS INSANE, hello my name is john and im a watchaholic!
Love the German mechanical brands...Junghans and Stowa. Never found the desire to go more expensive. (The Casio brand is great for the cheaper digitals)
It's really not that hard to do. I'm doing things the same way... Even if I had the cash for them, there's no way I'd pay over $200-$350 for a watch. I have a pretty good sense of time... Rather spend big dollars on things that fast or go boom..
I can so relate. LOL . . . Had one Casio Edifice only daily watch for many years. Then I bought another and another and another. 30+ Watches later OMG. All Quartz except my latest GEVRIL Automatic acquisition. Had to buy a Winder naturally and got it regulated as well. Was 25 seconds/day fast . . . now 3 seconds slow/day . . . much better. LOL Wife asks why I have 30+ watches . . . I answers "because I don't have 50" . . . LOL
Thanks for all the cool Knife video's, I have a new appreciation for folders. As far as watches go I'll stick to my Suunto Core. I agree with the whole getting caught up in gear whoring, I'm one when it comes to out door gear and fix blade knives
Nick, you are the very best! I’m very attracted to you I’m a bit ashamed to say. Smart, funny, knowledgeable and a great delivery. What a man! This from an avowed heterosexual.
As a collector, I agree with your points. I'm in the women's vintage niche so I don't experience most of these problems. My watches are easy to maintain and are better than modern women's watches. They're also much more affordable. I enjoy your voice :D
I spent $100 on a Seiko Recraft series watch, and $250 on a Citizen Corso for my grandfather, which will be my watch one day, and at this point I think that is about as far as I'm gonna go. For everything else I use a $80 G-Shock, which ironically, is more durable and accurate than the Seiko or Citizen previously mentioned.
I have this addiction with pocket knives but never got pulled in to the watch world. I’ve bought a couple of decent watches in my life. They just bother me on my wrist. Also my biggest thing is I have the time everywhere. It’s on my iPad, phone, truck radio, clock on the wall and my laptop. It’s always in front of my. So I just never had a true need for a watch.
Well Nick, everything you said is spot on. I have owned a gambit of watches from Casio to Rolex, I currently ware a Seiko Proplex divers watch. It keeps fair time for an automatic movement, retail is around $500. Everything you said is true, it's a SICKNESS.
I love this! Seeing this just makes me happier that I got out of watches and focused more on knives. My collection has been narrowed down to 2 watches. A dress watch and an EDC. Neither of which tip the financial scales in any way, shape, or form. I don't dress up much, so my main watch is a $90 dollar G-Shock. I've had several G-Shocks. All of them were tough as nails and dragged through hell and back without a hiccup in performance. My dress watch sounds laughable, but is quite classy and in great shape. A 15 year old Fossil I bought from a buddy for $50 bucks. I've had $1500 dollar watches that were gorgeous. I still like the old Fossil better. We are who we are. LOL
Even if I saw this when you posted this I'd be 7 watches in. Which is how many I currently have. It all started with my G-Shock, which was a gift. I denied for a long time it started with that one.
Oh my God this is funny. And true. And boy have you got it right about those people at Hodinkee. (Which reminds me: I haven't looked at their site lately.)
Ive got two watches, one for every day use, and one for when I have to dress up, and I stopped myself there. I almost fell down the rabbit hole of collecting but I thought better of it.
The sickness is real folks. Watches will cut you deeper than any knife.

So classic. I should have listened to you Nick. Too late for me now. I am in it like Flint
If it makes you feel better, I picked up that Citizen you had on the table because you said it had great lum. I never wore a watch before, but I needed one for third shift work when I can't have my phone, and it's been perfect for me.
So your pain has done good for the world! Atleast for me, anyway.
I did not get into watches. Thanks Nick! You're a financial lifesaver!
-Maxie
I'm into guitars, knives, and watches. I'm fucked.
Citizen, Centina and Omega are perfectly in sync 👍
I fully agree, yet I cannot let go of my Pelagos. But I learned my lesson though, and I doubt I will go further than this.
I really enjoy your videos! Thanks for this one. ☺
I wonder how many non-watch collectors will watch this video and think, "hmmm... I wonder what the big deal is?" and thereby start their journey into watch collecting...
The sweet irony of it! 😉
KarenS_923. Im not going to do it.... knife collecting is bad enough
keifer225948 I hear you! I've already fallen down the fountain pen rabbit hole, and even sticking with pens under $200 each, it's more than I can afford!
I'm not sure I've ever seen Nick more passionate about anything more than "DO NOT GET INTO WATCHES"
Love it, now I'm off to gaze at my really nice no-knives knife collection before grabbing a pair of scissors or the butter knife to cut something.
Im not really into watches much anyway. Mine's got Mickey Mouse on it, and the ladies LOVE Mickey. That said who really needs fancy watches. Then again I saw a cool Bugs Bunny one the other day... Oh no...the addiction has begun!
😂 Great video, Nick.
I loved this - You're brilliant, sir.
Ha. My collection didn't start with the F-91W, it ended when I got one. Still wearing it.
Thanks for the warning Nick! I've always had digitals gonna stay with digitals for the time being!
"Once you buy one, it's over” is the greatest description of the addiction I have ever heard. Thank you for this important PSA.
I recently came down with the watch sickness. It’s on the list along with guns, knives, and flashlights. lol
Thank you nick , that is all that needs to be said.
I have 4 Casios,2 Seikos,1 Bulova, and 1 Armitron. All under $125(my budget limit). I enjoy them all :)
What movement did you get on the Bulova?
It's really not that hard to do. I'm doing things the same way... Even if I had the cash for them, there's no way I'd pay over $200-$350 for a watch. I have a pretty good sense of time... Rather spend big dollars on things that fast or go boom..
my most expensive watch is a Chaps automatic for $200 (chp9506 or something like that)
That's amazing you got all of those watches for $125 combined!
LOL
Wife asks why I have 30+ watches . .
Best line: “Hey look, that’s a really great deal on this other watch that I don’t need,” said The Man with the Golden Arm.
Excellent review, Nicks collection almost matches mine. I am considering getting the Citizen.
As a collector, I agree with your points. I'm in the women's vintage niche so I don't experience most of these problems. My watches are easy to maintain and are better than modern women's watches. They're also much more affordable. I enjoy your voice :D
I feel like I dodged a bullet when my 2nd watch was a Casio Edifice. It still makes me smile playing with it and I've never wanted to replace it.
I do like my atomic watches since the time and date changes automatically.
I like my Citizen F900
This is the best one I’ve seen yet 😂 Nick was on fire.
Nick sometimes I find myself laughing out loud with your videos. Thank you. And if I was independently wealthy I’d buy an Omega😆
It takes one to know one.. :-) great video Nick, wife is laughing about the addiction.
LOL
Nick you do a great job! Loved this video, you are totally correct!
Your explanations are perfect
this had me cracking up! your voice is amazing
Even if I saw this when you posted this I'd be 7 watches in. Which is how many I currently have. It all started with my G-Shock, which was a gift. I denied for a long time it started with that one.
As someone who has bought/flipped over 50 watches, I can confirm. RUN!
This was so funny yet so factual. Loved the ending.
Good PSA. I have the disease. Pray for me.
Where’s the LOVE THIS VIDEO button? And, people, pay attention! Nick speaks the truth!
That's funny coming from someone WHO BROUGHT ME INTO THIS HOBBY TO BEGIN WITH!
