The sickness is real folks. Watches will cut you deeper than any knife.
Chris Allison shit. This guy watches.
lmfao
Too late I got 320 watches and Im making watches myself...
The hobby is GREAT 🤓
😂
I got into watches because I needed to be able to tell the time and date quickly at work and it's not always convenient (or recommended) to pull my phone out of my pocket. Now I have 15 watches.
@tillallareoneluv You sold them to afford watches, didn't you?
@@psykerwave2315 Oh no.
Nick is a wise man. Three years ago, I owned two watches. Then I got into watches. Today I own 40 watches and my 2021 NYE resolution is to sell off half and get back to a mere 20. I've spent 2 weeks trying to decide which 20. In the meantime, I bought another Seiko mechanical. Its a sickness. Becomes an obsession. Listen to Nick. This is a cautionary tale !
Did you keep your resolution?
"I've spent 2 weeks trying to decide which 20. In the meantime, I bought another Seiko mechanical." FKN CLASSIC!!!😆
Nick raging against the inner demons. Lol
anthony miller the struggle is real!!!😂😂😂
I’m glad I’m not the first to say it this time! 👍🏻👍🏻
LOL!
Great vid well done. Seriously people this is a legit issue many of us have. There is no cure
Random Rob hoo boy and I thought us knife folk had it bad...
Mr. Crumbly You’ve no idea my friend...
Mr. Crumbly nooooooooo idea, started with the knives, dipped, then fell into the watches....30 later, oh boy :)
Random Rob There is a cure and that's selling the house to buy a Patek, when you then live under and bridge but without your family and your house, I suppose the Patek isn't so important anyway. True story, I met a homeless person in London with a Rolex Submariner and he would rather live under a bridge than sell his beloved Submariner. And it was not fake or a replica. And on top of that he was not hooked on drugs or alcohol, he had gotten into issues in his life, but before selling his watch he preferred living under a bridge. That's addiction for you.
I have this disease too i have it so bad 12 watchs in and im not slowing down at all
This public service video has dethroned my all time favorite, “Reefer Madness” ! But Nick, don’t hesitate to buy a second mechanical because of the need to keep both wound. If you just buy a $300 watch winder to go with each one, then there is no limit to how many you can keep running. Just be sure to buy the expensive lithium batteries for the winders. Oh, and remember to buy a really large and expensive safe to keep them in, preferably one with a motorized circular shelf to make your daily selection easier. Although you may need a larger residence for the safe, or to at least reinforce the floors. Uhh, don’t forget the special jewelry insurance policy, since you have exceeded normal homeowner policy limits. You can save a little on the insurance if you have an expensive alarm system installed or hire a 24-7 guard service. But if all this sounds too time consuming, you can get to the same ultimate future state by throwing a few clothes and some cardboard in an old shopping cart and going straight away to live with the last generation of former watch collectors under the freeway overpass who can be heard calling out to passers by: “Hey buddy, can you tell me what time it is?”
LMAO Epic comment my friend! hahahah
😂😂
great comment!😂
Nice example of the Diderot effect.🙂
The next watch is always the best one.
No no no its the one after that
@@nickkendall3764 Maybe one more
Ok this is my second time back to the message thread. And yep i can confirm every ways i buy is better than the last one. Dose anyone elce buy watches to find they stop wearing the older one's. ? Iv now forced myself to start wearing the older one's again and i have to say iv found a lot of fun in this even if there way way crappy because it makes you extreamly happy to switch back to a grate watch the day after. I never sell a watch hence why im now 12 watches deep and showing no sign of slowing down lol
I refuse to buy a new one until the one I'm currently using irreparably breaks. I started out with a nice fancy looking watch and now I have some kind of frankenstein thing.
@@nickkendall3764 if you find older ones getting boring, simply change the strap and it will give the watch a new look :)
Where were you 5 years ago on this?? It’s too late for me....save you’re selves....Run!!
I wish someone had given me this advice earlier. Now I'm here wearing a watch that I cannot afford on an expensive strap that I can also not afford. However, my cardboard box is actually pretty warm at night.
HAHAHA 😂
Nick you are the greatest human to ever make a RUclips video! Through that whole video I was laughing my head off! You’re hilarious. Although unfortunately I have already gotten in to watches. I have not gone much up the ladder like I have on knives but I already know it’s going to happen. Nick, I have a problem.
If only I'd watched this video 3 years ago (eh, watched, eh? Never mind) I'd have saved myself a lot of sorrow and would probably have (at least) a new bathroom by now. There is truth in this video. I'm just saying.
Worst part is that you think the next one is the last one
"Folks it's 10 grand!!" And " no one would do crack if it felt like getting kicked in the nuts" two of my favorites Nick shabazz quotes in one video lol.
🤣 I know huh!
Someone is calling the elephant out in the room. Someone is finally speaking the real truth. Thank you so much.
Video title should have been:
"Why you should WATCH out for this hobby!"
Huehuehuehuehue
This came 2 weeks too late. I just bought a Soviet mechanical dive watch, and I love it. I can already tell I'm falling down the rabbit hole (Just like with knives when I first started watching this channel). Thanks for nothing Nick! ...Keep up the good work.
Vostok is the gateway drug to mechanical watch addiction. Don't be like me! A year from now when you've got a Hamilton, Orient, or Seiko, you'll look at your Vostok like it was the cheap toy at the bottom of a Crackerjack box.
Beware!
Vostok inbound for review!
This is going to be good because you have been spoiled by good, modern watches.
Prediction: you will not like this watch. The best way to appreciate a Vostok is to understand that they've been making the same watch since the '60s to the super-cheap requirements of the Soviet military. The designers had to spin straw into gold and by golly they did it -- but by comparison with modern watches, they are a bit sad.
I have a Vostok that I bought before getting a decent watch at Christmas. It's tiny and weird, and I don't really have a use for it. LOL
Oh contraire. I'm a history buff, so I fully appreciate that aspect of it.
I refuse to spend high dollars for older technology that is inaccurate and overpriced. Solar powered quartz with atomic or gps time sync is my path with Casio, seiko, or citizen.
Until you get tired of changing batteries and fall in love with ticking sounds and sweeping seconds hands...
Sean Pollard Dammit Sean now I need all those features...
@@seanpollard4844 he said solar bruh
Kenichimightiest solar watches have batteries that wear out too, they are the recharge type.
Sean Pollard my solution - pocket watches - kill me now.
When Batman tells you to stay away from watches; you'd better be listening!
Here for my quarterly rewatch of this video. It's a reminder I very much need.
How do I ever watch review vids again after this guy sets the bar! Most entertaining reviews on the planet. NICK YOU ARE A LEGEND!
"What if I was to get a Pilot's license? I'm gonna need a Pilot's watch" - Damn I hadn't thought about that scenario! I better get one ordered
Whenever I think about buying a new watch, I come back to this video.
Thanks for your service nick
They're expensive because they're male jewelry first and foremost in this day and age. The price of good jewelry is never rational.
So little people realize that.
Thank you nick , that is all that needs to be said.
I recently got bit by the watch bug, this video is the vaccine I needed. Thanks for putting things into perspective.
Be honest Billy, you've bought a new watch since posting this comment haven't you?..
@@Kaleb.R No, I told a family member about my interest in watches and he gifted me 4 of them. There is one watch I want though, I want a custom picture on the face of my watch but the only company that I found that does this Zazzle, won't put the picture I want on the watch because they say the image is copyrighted.
Nick i love your videos man.. You are an absolute perfectionist when it comes to reviews and i love it.. Thank you for your time.
Love the video Nick, very entertaining.... OK, a serious comment here.... If you think about your argument here, basically everything that your saying applies to any sort of "higher end" COLLECTING of things, of recognized "collectable things" Think about it... ART (paintings, sculpture, etc.), KNIFES, GUNS, ANTIQUES, etc. all go crazy high in price for diminishing returns.
What you seem to be missing Nick is the art and joy of collecting!!!!!! The world would be a boring place if EVERYTHING was valued, sought after, etc was based purely on a cost and function ratio
Granted you made a point similar to mine toward the end of the video... i mean the "joy" of collecting came across in the humorous approach that you took... BRAVO Nick, BRAVO
I think the point was mostly the price factor. In knives $100 can get you some really nice quality, full function, will last forever pieces.
In high quality watches, $100 (when buying new) is 100% chump change; rather, you catch yourself thinking things like '$500 for that piece, that's an absolute steal!' or 'Sure, 1200 dollars is a little pricey, but...' , or 'A so-an-so (brand name here) for less than 3 grand? You'd be crazy not to get one!'
You, my friend, are a national treasure.
Thank you for your refreshingly honest perspective...and for potentially saving me thousands of dollars!
RUclips needs more channels like yours. Consider me a subscriber as of today.
For some it’s about notoriety. For most of us watch enthusiasts, it’s about the mechanical heartbeat. It’s just neat, something we are proud to wear.
Thanks for making this video Nick, I couldn’t agree more with you on this. You start to feel like you’re the only one that’s not crazy after getting into watches and reading forum posts and sites like hodinkee.
Thanks Nick. I sent this video to my buddy Ed who I believe has a watch problem. He’s been trying to get me into watches too. Again, thanks Nick… and like you said, he’s already into watches so he’ll probably just become a subscriber....
Thanks for the warning Nick! I've always had digitals gonna stay with digitals for the time being!
"Once you buy one, it's over” is the greatest description of the addiction I have ever heard. Thank you for this important PSA.
Watches are one of the finest achievements of man. It's easy to be fascinated by them. Great video.
My grandmother gave me my grandfather’s pocket watch and that’s how I got started. The ticking sound is my favorite sound in the world. I watch your channel for the watches but I do check out flashlights and knives from time to time. I never laughed so hard. Sad but true. You sir have a gift!
I'm not sure I've ever seen Nick more passionate about anything more than "DO NOT GET INTO WATCHES"
Nick, you're right. I'm switching now from an automatic TH to Quartz probably Oceanus. After 7 years with an automatic I realised what I really need from a watch
You are undeniably the best!!!!!
I appreciate all the honesty in this video. The addiction is real!
I just bought a Seiko SNK809 a week ago as an intro into watches. I saw you had a negative experience with it but I am loving it so far
I always watch this video whenever I have an urge to get a new watch. It does help me in having a more logical outlook. For somebody who has spent a fortune on watches in the past, I am very grateful for this. Really... I am.
Best line: “Hey look, that’s a really great deal on this other watch that I don’t need,” said The Man with the Golden Arm.
Nick you do a great job! Loved this video, you are totally correct!
Thanks for all the cool Knife video's, I have a new appreciation for folders. As far as watches go I'll stick to my Suunto Core. I agree with the whole getting caught up in gear whoring, I'm one when it comes to out door gear and fix blade knives
Your best video yet, academy award material. Some day you'll want a enamel dial with raised indices too, left that out. But there's nothing like being in a meeting, getting drubbed, everything going absolutely tits up, and looking at your fabulous little wrist buddy and feeling comforted and momentarily lost in its elegant beauty. It's like a Valium substitute for those who prefer to just say no to drugs. Best wishes for you collection going forward, I'm off to my watch Jeweler to fondle a Grand Seiko divers watch, my two tone bluesy getting a bit long in tooth and now silver's in fashion anyway. Onwards and upwards...
The addiction you're talking about is why I start buying things with an end state in mind; so I buy the "beater version", see if I like it, then I appreciate the better feature more. Then I research and buy versions to meet certain needs, so for watches, I'd get a solar powered beater, A running watch, and a dressy watch. If I want to upgrade, I HAVE to put the old one up for sale till it's sold. Just my personal way, love the videos! researching is the most fun part of collecting in my opinion.
😂 Great video, Nick.
I loved this - You're brilliant, sir.
Love the rant love the passion
If it makes you feel better, I picked up that Citizen you had on the table because you said it had great lum. I never wore a watch before, but I needed one for third shift work when I can't have my phone, and it's been perfect for me.
So your pain has done good for the world! Atleast for me, anyway.
As someone who has bought/flipped over 50 watches, I can confirm. RUN!
I have only just now come to this hilarious, but veeery true warning. You really hit me where it hurts and it was all on the point.
I did not care for watches and did not wear any until two years ago. Now I have 50 of them. I have already sold 10 but each time I sell one, I see another two that look fabulous and that I really cannot live without.
I try to resist the urge to buy new watches by looking at negative reviews on them. You dissuaded me from buying the Longines VHP, thanks for that! The other strategy is to compare them with similar watches I already own and convincing myself that I don't need to buy the new one since the old one is just as nice and good. At least that strategy has become way easier now that I bought a ton of watches.
I am looking forward to your next watch reviews!
This was so funny yet so factual. Loved the ending.
I wear a $200 citizen diver. I started off with a $40 casio. I loved my casio and I currently love my citizen. I have stuck to budget watches and in this range it seems more focused on function. I do really appreciate and drool over some beautiful higher end watches simply for the artistry and craftsmanship.
Im not really into watches much anyway. Mine's got Mickey Mouse on it, and the ladies LOVE Mickey. That said who really needs fancy watches. Then again I saw a cool Bugs Bunny one the other day... Oh no...the addiction has begun!
I like the digi you referred as the beater. Did the fancy black faced no numbers shown back some years. Nothing on my wrist since. My ph slides from pocket to hand and there’s all my needs filled.
You hit the bullseye with this one. Just came from a comment section arguing whether watches are just fashion statements rather than tools and most of your arguments have convinced me that watches are not practical choices nowadays.
I did not get into watches. Thanks Nick! You're a financial lifesaver!
I love this video. Over the last year or so my love of watches has gone from an f91w to a Casio royale to a Casio Tough Solar to a Citizen Eco Drive which I picked up the other day. And I'm still not satisfied, I want an automatic 😭
Citizen, Centina and Omega are perfectly in sync 👍
Nick, you are a truly singular talent. Absolutely brilliant video. Oddly enough, the Apple Watch, in retrospect, has been my gateway drug. Didn’t wear a watch for years but now craving mechanicals like the Tudor Pelagos, Sinn and Stowa pilots, and IWC whatever’s. Hopefully this malady will go no further than the Scurfa Bell Diver 1 I received a few days ago-first mechanical I’ve had since childhood.
this had me cracking up! your voice is amazing
Nick must have opened a pound of coffee with one of his knives and snorted the whole thing before this video
Your explanations are perfect
Well spoken and absolutely true.
Got my citizen eco drive pet your recommendation, think I’ll just get one good daily use dive watch and a bracelet to dress it up for when I wanna look pretty. Much love my guy, always appreciate you. -Maxie
Well Nick, everything you said is spot on. I have owned a gambit of watches from Casio to Rolex, I currently ware a Seiko Proplex divers watch. It keeps fair time for an automatic movement, retail is around $500. Everything you said is true, it's a SICKNESS.
You really helped me today Nick.
Amazing video. Excellent points.
Excellent review, Nicks collection almost matches mine. I am considering getting the Citizen.
Hey Nick... how do i get started in watch collection?? 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍
Stoney Lonsome great idea!! Any suggestions???
NO!!!
Nick Shabazz. Your right..... im thinking a torrent. In damasteel!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😅
Stoney Lonsome I'll probably just stick to knifes!!
Stoney Lonsome Don t start! Take up baking or gardening instead, no not baking because you need to time things. Gardening is a great substitute.
It takes one to know one.. :-) great video Nick, wife is laughing about the addiction.
This is the best one I’ve seen yet 😂 Nick was on fire.
I really enjoy your videos! Thanks for this one. ☺
I wonder how many non-watch collectors will watch this video and think, "hmmm... I wonder what the big deal is?" and thereby start their journey into watch collecting...
The sweet irony of it! 😉
KarenS_923. Im not going to do it.... knife collecting is bad enough
keifer225948 I hear you! I've already fallen down the fountain pen rabbit hole, and even sticking with pens under $200 each, it's more than I can afford!
Amen brother!
I'm in no danger. Can't stand having anything on my wrist.
Jathes you might end up like me with a thing for pocket watches and getting them custom engraved
I was the same before i bought a watch, then it became uncomfortable to have a naked wrist
I love this! Seeing this just makes me happier that I got out of watches and focused more on knives. My collection has been narrowed down to 2 watches. A dress watch and an EDC. Neither of which tip the financial scales in any way, shape, or form.
I don't dress up much, so my main watch is a $90 dollar G-Shock. I've had several G-Shocks. All of them were tough as nails and dragged through hell and back without a hiccup in performance. My dress watch sounds laughable, but is quite classy and in great shape. A 15 year old Fossil I bought from a buddy for $50 bucks. I've had $1500 dollar watches that were gorgeous. I still like the old Fossil better. We are who we are. LOL
The Seiko Snowflake is a beautiful Spring Drive watch....
i dont like you :(
@@rashid_art BROOTAL
Haha this was awesome 😂 the monopoly thing is also in the eyewear/sunglass industry. The more you know.
You convinced me.
I definitly need a wristwatch....
Love it, now I'm off to gaze at my really nice no-knives knife collection before grabbing a pair of scissors or the butter knife to cut something.
My strategy for not getting into expensive watches is not being able to afford them
Nick, you are the very best! I’m very attracted to you I’m a bit ashamed to say. Smart, funny, knowledgeable and a great delivery. What a man! This from an avowed heterosexual.
good advice, glancing at the $1,200 on my right wrist is a nice thing, but holy crap guys, how did i even wind up getting this deep? all i even got out of it was solar charging, a nice dressy look and gps time setting (mostly that last one).
I concur, I am not a snazzy watch collector nor a well learned connoisseur but I enjoy my Swatch collection - it's reasonably affordable with some great variety...growing at 19 so far, not too bad I tell myself
BUT!
Now I have my eyes on Some Seikos, Casios, Citizens, etc....and yes!
It is the "variety of movement, design, and function" that is drawing me in
It's insatiable
Great reviews!
As a collector, I agree with your points. I'm in the women's vintage niche so I don't experience most of these problems. My watches are easy to maintain and are better than modern women's watches. They're also much more affordable. I enjoy your voice :D
I'm into guitars, knives, and watches. I'm fucked.
Just brilliance 🤣🤣🤣!.....am so addicted I watched this twice 🤖!
my vostok amphibia which cost me about $110 CAD runs under +10s/day and im completely happy with it
Not a big watch fan, but have always admired mechanical watches.Especially pocket watches. Got my 1914 Elgin B.W. Raymond serviced and have been wearing it every day. Keeps better time than most modern watches I've bought.
Another cool thing with mechanical watches is you can take a quiet moment, listen to the ticking, and take a breath. Needed that after listening to you talking so frantically in your video. :P
I feel like I dodged a bullet when my 2nd watch was a Casio Edifice. It still makes me smile playing with it and I've never wanted to replace it.
That video is one of your best in my opinion.
You have one job! Great reviews.
I like and somewhat collect watches, and I absolutely agree. Dont go that road, it can spin out of control pretty fast.
Don't know if I agree with nick at all about seiko and the whole accuracy thing my cheap SNE391 has been worn everyday for 5+ years now, it has been banged, bumped and vibrated to death when using a large rotory hammer and jack hammar, it's been on my wrist when firing handguns like my 500S&W and 460S&W and a couple other brutal recoiling handguns, it's gotten some welding spatter on it because I forgot to take it off, it's been covered in gasoline, diesel fuel, parts washing solvent and other harsh chemicals in my work as a mechanic, and it's even been inside and MRI machine because I forgot it in my pocket, and I have never had to reset the time ever- other than twice a year because of daylight savings time, the thing still looks remarkably good despite it's hard life and has never been anything but incredibly perfect in time keeping (I can't even tell if it ever goes off time enough to even bother changing over the course of an entire year).....and the best thing is no batteries, winding or any of that crap to worry about....hell now that I think about it I actually ran it through the dishwasher to clean it one time after a 4 wheeler ride left it (and me) mud covered from head to toe, I clean it otherwise once in a while with a sink full of hot water some dish soap and an old tooth brush ....I think I'll be buying another Seiko when this one finnaly quits thank you.
Bang on / Priceless
Great, very funny, very true rant!
Fabulous video.
True. I started with a Casio Edifice Quartz in Jun 17, followed by 7 other watches , the last purchase being a Grand Seiko sbgr051 in Jan 18, all within the space of 8 months. I feel confident that the GS would be my last purchase. I found my Grail watch and I'm through with my watch lust.
That's funny coming from someone WHO BROUGHT ME INTO THIS HOBBY TO BEGIN WITH!
This must be one of your best videos EVAH!
This is brilliant!
