- Quartz watches are absolute marvels of the electronic era, and incredible timepieces based on incredible technology. In this video, I talk about how Quartz watches work, what fancy features are available, and the strengths and weaknesses of wearing a watch with a Quartz Movement.
Soon, we'll do something similar for mechanical watches, and then do some comparison. Nothing new for serious "horologists", and pardon the simplifications, but might help somebody just getting into the watch game.
Funny that the Swiss guys want you to be impressed by the engineering that is trying to get as accurate as possible... Yet they hate the Quartz that does it so much more easily...
It's like a person building an air conditioner to cool your glass of water is scoffing at a guy who gives you some ice.
+Maxwell Super (Atomedge Sharpening) Agreed! Mechanicals are fun and whatnot, but nobody should be looking down their noses at quartz!
I think a better analogy would be a manual knife vs an assisted knife. Or a manual car vs an automatic. Blended whiskey vs single malt. These kind of purist vs newer tech comparisons exist all over the place, mechanical vs quartz is just another one. Whichever you choose is up to personal preference, but yeah, its always the purists that get kinda snooty. Nick seems to put accuracy above all other criteria, so it only makes sense that he'll prefer quartz.
Breitling makes some awesome, full of complications, thermo-compensated high end quartz watches.

I've now watched two of your videos. You are a talented guy! Thanks. I watch a ton of watch reviews which are quite formulaic, so your out-of-the-box thinking is refreshing and informative. I always wondered how a quartz watch worked and your illustration was terrifically helpful.I do wish luxury brands would add more quartz models. I have many mechanical watches, most of which have proven finicky, expensive and undependable. Basic servicing of a Panerai, for example, can exceed $1000 and takes many months to complete.
As someone who's spent many years with a mechanical watch on his wrist, I find myself being a big fan of quartz watches these days. I find it fun watching the second hand tick or a digital watch increment its digits. I used to appreciate mechanicals but I realize quarts is simply the right way to build watches. Far more accurate, cheap, continues to run even if you forget about it, etc. And if you don't want to be bothered changing batteries just get a solar-powered quartz watch.
This is the second video of yours that I've watched and you've nailed it for me. Just bought a Longines quartz watch and now fully understand not only my own watch, but now know the difference between quartz and automatics. Thank you.

Can you imagine if the car industry followed the watch industries model of luxury? The latest and greatest Bentley would be a Ford model T.

My ideal watch is an atomic or GPS watch.
It needs to be elegantly built analog watch in which two-sided AR sapphire, hardened titanium, hardened SS or tough carbon fiber is used for its case.
This watch needs to be shock-, magnetic- and temperature-resistant as well as WR, to at least 200m. It has to be a kind of watch which while it's recovered from the bottom of a lake or a sea in 10-20 years after it's drawn works like new when put under the sunlight.
I think it's actually possible to make such a watch using the best of today's technologies.

Cool video. I always wear my G shock and sometimes wear a mechanical watch on my other wrist just because I can. :D The only mechanical watch I have is a Vostok, which is suprisingly good for the price.

Thank you for this wonderful explanation of Quartz vs Mechanical. I am fascinated with mechanical watches, but prefer to use my solar powered Quartz watches for practicality. Those radio controlled watches are hard to beat when it comes to accuracy. Cheers. :)

Another great informative video which I enjoyed watching. I own both mechanical and solar quartz watches and each have there merit in the watch world even the cheaper mechanical watches such as Seiko 5's or the Orient 3 star range of watches. I own an Orient 3 star watch FEM0401RU9 for instance which is a really good watch and is nearly as accurate as some of my quartz watches and certainly beats the hell out of my Seiko 5's for accuracy. Thanks for posting your take on both mechanical and quartz watches.
Quartz is the way to go. The real deal.
The only thing I have against quartz is that the lower end market has caused it to become "boring" to me. I prefer mechanical, even vintage ones.
@nickshabazz Great Video- loved it! But there is serviceable quartz watches out there. The Aerospace, springdrive, tuna, etc. Im sure u knew that though

I wish some of the bigger non-Swiss manufacturers would step up their quartz game and start producing quality sub-$500 watches with beautiful designs that rival those of JLC, IWC and the like. They need to hire some talented artists instead of having engineers turn every quartz watch into either a plain standard dress watch or a silly MacGyver gadget with dial chock full of features. Watches are first and foremost fashion accessories, so design should be first priority.

Bulova made a watch based on a tuning fork. Made a high pitch constant beep that annoyed the hell out of me. Couldn't sleep with the watch in the same room even.
My Bulova Lunar Pilot is my favorite watch in my collection. Screw the haters.

The crystal frequency fluctuates with temperature. Military crystals are temperature regulated to maintain its frequency. Now, if they could implement the same on watch crystals it will be unbeatable, LOL...It could work on Grand Seiko Spring Drive since it generates its own current.

Grand Seiko 9F caliber Quartz, the only watch you need...
The job of a timepiece is to measure time. There are $15 Casio timepieces and $10000 Rolex timepieces. The Casio is more accurate than the Rolex. A cheap quartz movement is more accurate than than an expensive mechanical movement. Is it cooler? For many, no. But it is very accurate. Quartz watches are also durable.

Mechanical watch snobs, I was one of them. You want a watch that feels alive? My mechanical watches charge as I wear them so we say they are alive in a way. My Seiko Prospex Solar GPS, talk about being alive. This watch goes to sleep if I leave it in the dark for extended periods, basically hibernates like a bear. When I take it out of the dark it springs back to life embracing the light once again. When I go to the beach my Seiko has never been happier, sun for eternal life and water since that is where it belongs. When I have a beer on the beach and just sitting back my Seiko automatically connects to GPS satellites and sets the exact time. When I travel due to business my Seiko switches to the new time zone with a touch of a button. My Seiko shows me the time at home at the same time. Plus it shows me the day and date, with a perpetual calendar. It's titanium body is lighter and stronger than my Rolex and a thousand times more comfortable to wear. The ceramic bezel and crown guard look absolutely amazing. Why wear an old Model T on my wrist when I can wear a Tesla? Sorry Switzerland! Your mass marketing has not worked on me anymore, technology is what I embrace and no longer will I walk amongst the dinosaurs. "If you wish to understand the universe, think of energy, frequency and vibration." Nikola Tesla. This is what my Seiko GPS, Quartz represents to me. If that doesn't blow your mind?

It's just ridiculous how the Swiss industry try to justify why you should buy their old and inaccurate stuff, let's give you and example, Breitling use ETA's quartz movements and instead of telling you that is a thermo compensated quartz they tell you that is a "Superquartz" and they charge you thousands of dollars, then you have Certina with another ETA thermo compensated quartz that cost you us$500 and Certina are much nicer than Breitling, this gives you an idea how the Swiss industry works, selling you crap at high cost. They want to convince you that you should pay a lot for an automatic watch that with lots of luck will give you an error of 10-15 minutes a year, worse than the cheapest quartz, but they will tell you that you don't buy a watch to give yout the correct time, you buy a "piece of swiss jewelry"... what people is buying is swiss marketing crap and wasting their money buying inaccurate mechanical stuff, that's it, it doesn't mind how complex that is because it's inaccurate and a watch first should show accurate time, the less error per year the higher the quality.
i still don't understand how it works how does the movement work and why don't you just use a battery and set the stepper motor to turn every second i don't know why its so difficult to find a decent explanation
