  • The Lectric XPremium is a mid-drive electric bike, eBike, with a throttle. This bike has to be used properly or it will have gear noise, like a clacking sounding, where the chain slips over the freewheel gears. Elecruiser services all brands and created this video to demonstrate proper use of this mid-drive ebike with a throttle. When used properly the Lectric XPremium runs smoothly, but you must shift the gears like a manual transmission car.

This was the perfect video for me, thank you. I have the Lectric XPremium. I went from the Lectric 2.0 to it. I'm so used to using throttle, and despite reading the warning on the handlebar about the gear to use for throttle (4 or below), and the manual more than once, while riding in 4th I would hear the chain (or motor??) clink or skip. I understand with a mid-drive motor it's more focused on pedaling; I assumed throttle at 4 would work fine. But it does not. This video was very informative for me, and cleared things up for me mostly.
However, I find the idea of downshifting for stops troublesome... I have no idea how to drive a stickshift car, but on the bike, it's more than just seeing a crosswalk I need to stop for, it's also the many, many cars that pull out too far waiting to turn on side streets etc.. Any tips you could give me there?

Stopping doesn't matter. Starting up think pedal, shift, throttle.

Sterting in third gear is just fine. It is like taking off in second gear in a manual auto.

The manual the bike comes with explains in detail all about this. IIRC it says to never use throttle only in anything above 4th gear

GREAT Info, takes some work to figure out the shifting. I have a bafang mid drive that I need some help programming, can you work on them and the controllers?

So let off the throttle and pedaling momentarily when you shift, correct?

Yes...but just as importantly...be in the right gear for your speed needs.

I have been using e bikes for 15 years all but the first being mid drives. Just a light tap on either brake lever will shut off the motor. Not so hard to engage the brakes, And you can shift just like using a clutch.

Mid drives are like regular bikes. You don't get on a pedal bike and start off in 10th gear...drive the middies just like a non powered bike.

Do you have to use the throttle ? Can you just use pedal assist?

Using the throttle is optional. You can either throttle OR use pedal assist. You shift gears with both.

I’m sorry but that’s just shotty, I have a bafang bbshd and have had it in stock 1500watt form and also have it with a upgraded controller pushing 4500watts using a asi bac855 controller and even my 4500 watt set up doesn’t skip gears when it’s in the lowest gear. I feel like the derailer is likely not putting sufficient tension on the drive line or the chain is too long and needs a few links removed. The only time I had this happen was when my chain was too long and was easily fixed by shortening the chain which then tightened the tension of the chain naturally. Sure you will have to adjust your shift points and make sure you can still shift into every gear but it won’t skip anymore if you shorten the chain some most likely. If it does then I’d say that derailer is crap but I’ll be honest and say I don’t use a nice derailer myself and don’t have that issue again except for when my chain was too long.

Thanks for the comment. It certanily does not skip in the lowest gear. Just like a manual car, you have to start in a low gear then shift up, and, shift down when slowing to properly use the mid-drive, especially with a throttle. Nature of the machine. (not to dis Lectric, but they are certainly not the highest level parts.)
This is not really a problem, just a nuance of proper operation.
