Brilliant video. Don't change a thing. The mix of layout, build & Inkscape works well as does your honesty about viewers comments & the occasional mistake. I did like the suggestion about removing a building to insert a derelict gap in the row. Not a feature I have seen modelled before - so an opportunity.
Thank you very much!
Thank you re Inkscape, every good Engineer shows his working out , looking forward to your Tutorial series , Thank you
More to come!
Absolutely brilliant ending. More power to your elbow.
Thank you!
Don't change a thing. The mix of narration and face to camera, designing in Inkscape to construction is nicely balanced. The only thing I would change is duration... make them 15 to 25 minutes, so we get to see more of the construction or thought process whilst designing the buildings. But remember rule #1 - its your layout and your channel. Love the transformation at the end... brilliant !!
Thank you very much!!
I absolutely love the last answer to the comments!!! That was just too funny!! Well done my friend!!… as for your videos, I find them well done, informative, and a joy to watch. The layout is incredible and I am always amazed at the illusion of depth that you are able to create using your forced prospective technique…. So… don’t change a thing!!
Thank you very much. I enjoyed making that last scene.
Oh Michael (clap!)! Brilliant and a very engaging 9.5 minutes, absolutely flew by. Thanks so much for another gem, have a good week!
Thanks, you too!
A thoroughly entertaining episode Michael, I just love in some cases the deadpan way you’ve handled one or two of the comments that have been made by viewers and subscribers. It is a fine balance to deliver what is after all a personal labour of love but also supply content to those who pay for more than the weekly video. In my option don’t change a bit, as subscribers can come and go as content evolves and your enthusiasm for your layout should never be outweighed by the gratification of others.
Thank you David. I’m pleased you liked this long episode. I hoped to convey the benefits of the mock up process and share just how excited I am to have Station Road in mind now. I’m really keen to get started on the building.
It's great the way it is. I learn things and am entertained by your presentation. It's lots of fun!
Thank you very much!
The thing I've learned from following numerous RUclipsrs making model railways or doing anything DIY/hobby craft related: everyone's a critic. Keep doing what you're doing, its gotten you this far and it's fantastic
Thank you!
Yet another great video. I loved the explanations of some of the comments. Also how you dealt with the last one! Fabulous. Always a pleasure to watch. Roy.
Thank you! Cheers!
Brilliant finish! The most appropriate reaction to such a comment! Just as a reminder: if you don't get what you expect, then please move on to any another world at your feet!
Thank you. It was fun to do.
It's got to the point with your videos where I click "Like" and *then* watch the video. I've not taken off a single "like" yet!
Haha - thank you!
Some of those comments are baffling.
Like the idea of the hole, and tbh from what I've seen, you're smart enough to be able to work out a way of doing the hole and having a building cover it so that you can chop and change. The best of both worlds.
Good idea!
Great architectural Wonders:
The Taj Mahal,
The Temple at Angkor Wat,
The Great Pyramid of Cheops,
The Alhambra,
The Pantheon,
The Forth Bridge,
The Parthenon,
Station Road Chandwell.
Little wonder the posh buggers from Leeds are so despondent.
I should print that and frame it.
Great video and inspirational. Not many layouts built these days have a "real" back story, not even "prototype" models. Keep it up, and thanks.
Looking forward to the Inkscape series too!
Thank you very much! I love the Chandwell back story. I need to get another whimsical video made.
Hahaha, love this episodes ending. You're so creative that's what I love about your channel. I look forward to every episode. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much!
Yes Michale, Keep the Inkscape tips and tricks comming. Your teaching me how to use the software, I'm a CAD drafter and this Inkscape is kicken my butt... Thanks for all the great vids.
Thank you so much!
Brilliant!!! Absolutely LOVE the ending!!!
😂 Thank you.
"please change" ... well done sir! I have enjoyed each of your videos - each for what they are. Some are more "show off the layout", and some are more "lets have a discussion" (and some are about how to use Inkscape.) I enjoy that not all your videos are identical format/topic. ...I think you are doing a great job. keep it up!
Thank you very much!
Well that video answered one of the questions that has been puzzling mankind for centuries. Chadwell is the location of the Fountain of Eternal Youth and Michael has been partaking of its bounty as shown in the last scene.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ich bin von diesem Layout total begeistert. Der Straßenzug ist so perfekt. Besonders die Informationen über die Planung und Herstellung der Gebäude sind sehr interessant. Lustiges Ende. Habe sehr gelacht. Ich wünschd weiterhin gutes Gelingen. Grüße aus Hamburg
Danke schön!
Off the scale! Amazing 🤩
Don’t change anything! This is ridiculously good 👍
Can’t wait to see it built :)
Me neither 😀
Definitely love the ending. I think I met your son at Doncaster. Good on him for doing that! It made me laugh.
Thank you Carol. Yes, you met him in Doncaster this year.
Excellent - love your videos and enjoy watching pieces of card come to life.......
Thanks so much!
The vacant block idea...I really think you need to give it a go.
SMASHING as always M...Cheers
Thank you!
It never ceases to amaze me the comments that some people leave ! Just carry on the excellent work Michael. Oh by the way your ending was brilliant 😅. Cheers Euan
Thank you very much!
Brilliant review of the comments..... I think people forget its your layout and you have the final decision. I was a little stunned to see how your daughter ;) suddenly appeared and how deep her voice had become. (Yet another bit of Chadwell magic)
Hahah thank you!
Hahahahahahahaha. Love your "change" at the end, your son I assume, he's a good sport for helping dear old dad too. love your videos just as they are, nice mix of layout and conversation, and all the mental Olympics that go into research, design and construction of it.
Thank you. Yeah. That’s my son.
Haha brilliant end to the video. Love the realism of your layout.
Thank you very much!
Excellent update, questions and comments were very well handled (especially considering the entitlement on some of those who commented, wow! 😮) with your usual good humour. It's lovely to see Station Road taking shape and I'm really, REALLY looking forward to the Inkscape series. Cheers, Michael, all the best 👍
Thank you!
Don't change a thing. This is your layout, your journey and your world. We are just along for the ride.
Thank you!
fantastic. Loved every minute, especially the finale! People seem to forget that this is YOUR channel and YOUR layout.... Do what makes you happy and I shall happily come along for the ride!
Thank you!
A very informative video. Thanks Michael for your thoughts, all of which show a solid piece of planning has gone into Station Street. As for your face, I don't think you should worry, It's good to see how this sort of project ages a man(LOL). Your Inkscape programs are some of the best tutorials for CAD I have ever seen, keep them going please.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you.
Don’t change a thing Michael - I always look forward to your latest video and to see what you’ve been up to. I find the Inkscape stuff just as interesting as the modelling and the layout tours. The current video length is also just right - make it too long and people quickly lose interest and move onto something else.
Thanks so much!
Hi Michael, the idea of having a hole between buildings is to me, a great idea. The wooden props holding the buildings up could support tatty advertising boards with the paper peeling off or with a section missing. It's just run down Chandwell to T with litter in the bottom. I also feel that gap would give a much needed view to the railway but with a very unique frame. Which building to remove has to be your choice, but if you made it a corner one, the basement could be rubble filled and have a burnt out car on it !
Super ideas! Thank you Mark.
Haha... people are funny.... I love that we get to see some of you... It is YOUR channel. Granted, it's about the layout.. but there wouldn't be a layout with out the person behind it.. I love seeing the in depth look at your layouts and also seeing you use Inkscape.. You can't do what you have done without it! It's part of the build and personally I appreciate what it has taken for you to get your skill set up to where it is. As always loved the weekly video. Craig.
Thanks so much Craig!!
OMG @ 9:04 Michael of Chandwell is actually Sam of Sam's Train in disguise :). Whoever you are, I love watching your vidoes including the inkscape tutorials that have helped me immensely. Thank you.Looking forward to seeing the evolution of station road. Nga mihi nui James
Thank you! 😂
"Please change..." 🤣
Very nicely done! I, for one, am very much in the pro Inkscape camp, I'd had a yen to use it for years but always felt a bit shut out, but the way you explain things really clicked where others had failed to. I look forward to the new series!
Thank you!
I'd have happilly scateboarded down Station Rd with my bleach blonde hair and my shellsuit on my way to the mar_et. Can't wait to see graffiti on the weathered stone! I'm looking forward to the Inkscape sereis too! Peace and good health!
Thank you! You’d go pretty fast down Station Road on your skateboard! It would be quite a ride!! 🛹
Thanks Michael ! You could build one of the buildings to slot over the top of the abandoned building site with scaffolds holding up buildings either side. Given they’re so closely packed you could try a shell sleeve that slots over the site and could give best of both worlds?
Cool idea!
Loved the ending, haters gonna hate! Keep on keepin on, you're doing great!
Thank you
I just love your videos, always have done. The face change at the end was just superb! You know what Michael, you get comments that are 99% positive so you’re obviously doing something right! Ok, I’m no techy and wouldn’t want to use Inkscape but I do appreciate how useful it is. Re your mock up, it looks great, go with it, you always get it spot on. One thing I’d like to see is a small compact inner city garage? Hemmed in both sides, cramped and just imagine the details you could add in the interior!
Garage is appealing but I already have Wharfe Motors in one of the arches behind the Earl Chandfield so it may not do to double up.
@@Chandwell hah! Nothing like a bit of competition to keep prices down! Not many Chandwellians can afford posh cars! Actually forgot about t’other garage😀
I like the Inkscape content, fwiw. It's how I found your channel in the first place.
Thank you!
Lovely gentle ribbing of the grumblers Michael. That was some mighty fine lip-synching. You keep doing what you're doing. Chandwell is a real gem and though some commenters may be more well-meaning than others, ultimately it's your build and you haven't put a foot wrong yet.
Thanks so much! The last 30 seconds took almost as long as the rest of the video to make!
Your model and presentation are inspiring - I’m just about to start an n gauge project. Loved your response to final comment!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Cant wait to see the next video, love the ending, ha ha
Ha ha thanks.
I agree with all the "don't change a thing" comments.
I have just modified a Metcalfe goods shed, which is multiple layers of cardboard, because it doesn't quite fit where I wanted it to. I can concur with the strength of multiple layers of card! If only I'd done some sort of cereal packet mock up first!!! ;-) Cheers
Thank you! It's amazing how strong card is!
Haha, the internet is a weird and wonderful place. Goodness me, next you'll get comments asking you to jump through fiery hoops!
I enjoy your content - all of it, for what it's worth!
I know, right? The fiery hoop episode is still to come!
Every time I hand someone a paper spacecraft, they immediately jerk upward. They are startled that it weighs exactly nothing and is tough enough that they can't crush it in their hand. Paper models are astonishingly durable. Their only natural enemies are cats and water.
Exactly this. It’s incredibly string isn’t it?
A well produced video. I enjoy the whole thing including the humour (where's Tracy?)! The idea that the station is surrounded by buildings is brilliant, it really is just like real life. As for the awkward joints between roofs, well of course there are. And the backs, of course - I've had comments on my house designs that the back looks better then the front. Why not, you drive up to the front, but you spend time in the garden. And in town it's often where the 'disgusting' (and interesting) bits are. A gap with flying shores would be fine if you were modelling a bomb site but that wouldn't exist by your time line. Keep going, I'd say you've got it about right. I wish I could do that trick of getting younger!!
Thank you. Yeah, that’s my concern re the hole too.
I wish I could give an extra TU for the bit at 9:05 🤣 very well done
I loved making that it!
Hi Michael.
Please just keep doing what you do, changing your approach for one or two comments is rarely justified.
Remember the silent majority. Keep up the good work.
PS I have had a couple of goes at Inkscape but haven’t got to the useful stage yet.
Cheers Peter (from Melbourne, Australia)
Thanks for that!
One of the building in the terrace could be removable to reveal a derelict gap. A neat Easter egg.
A few people have suggested that. I’d never though if it. I will keep it in mind. Thank you!
I subscribed to this channel because you dive into the process behind your decisions (including how you adapt to mistakes and unexpected results), not simply the building process. And I like that you think differently than I do. Keep doing what you're doing, wherever that takes you.
I appreciate that! Thank you.
I admit I don’t understand Inkscape but I marvel at the skill in which you use it. I love your vids and builds, they are very inspiring. X
I appreciate that! Thank you!
Don't change a thing. 👏 Waiting for another farewell kiss at the train station....😂.....😅
One day eh!?
Hah great ending. Personally I think you have the content balance just right. I find it weird that people get upset with big buildings in front of the trains, I think you will find a lot of future layouts imitating Chandwell.
Thank you!
Michael Great next part to Station Rd. As a whole street that looks great all those different roof lines and building shapes. Bet the back will be a real miss mash of addition and styles. Think a Carpet Shop would look good with that idea you posted on Twitter a few months ago. Can’t wait to get some Chicken & Fries from Chandwell Fried Chicken never mind KFC you have CFC. Ian
I’ll have to take care to ensure there is space round the backs, especially up near the top. Plenty of scope for fun.
Love your work and its good to see Inkscape used in a way that is to do with modelling railway cityscapes
Many thanks!
Haha, I don't read the rest of the comments, I had no idea there was such Inkscape anonymity. I never would have started watching your awesome builds without your Inkscape focused videos.
I know, right? And I am very privileged to have you watching along. I wonder if you’d be willing for me to share my Inkscape-related tutorial plans with you as you are well-placed to offer insight!?
Just keep on keeping on mate.Chandwell is what it is because of you and your approach. If some people think there is too much of you, tough titty. It's your creation. Loved the swap at the end. Do consider the derilict hole though as would give another view of the trains and who knows maybe there'd be a construction obstruction in Station Rd for Chandwellites to write complaint letters to the Ediitor of The Chandwell Bugle. Arthur
Hahaha indeed. That’s a good shout. It would have to be the Chandwell Advertiser though. I think the Bugle went out of circulation!
Hey! The work you do is superb and people should be able to see who you are. The presentation has changed recently but it's your show and the content is still top drawer.
They'll be commenting about your accent next.
Bob
Commenting about your refined and distinctive accent, that is.
Bob
Hahaha. Yeah refined and distinctive indeed. Lovely save! 😂🤣
Love it just as it is. It’s inspiring stuff.
Thank you!
that was funny! Made me LOL! Wifes awake now,,, Oops!
Oops. I hope I’m not in too much trouble!
What an ending!
I had fun with that.
Thank you for the beginner friendly Inkscape tutorial, I always end up with oversized files when I get to the rendering! I love your vids!
There is a trick to help that. I’ll try to include it in my series.
Way too technical answer: If it's the 72/96 problem, that's a dpi issue, the SVG spec doesn't say what the dpi should be and the w3c changed it from 72 to 96. Inkscape followed. But if you're careful with your output and pay attention to the popup when it loads old files, it should be fine. If it's the x3.65 problem, you've got it in inches instead of mm. Making sure the document is in the unit you intend. There's a view box which scales the document from 96ths of an inch to a mm and if you load the wrong template that viewbox will never be right.

I shall be interested to see the buildings progress - but surely you will need to weather the track (dirt/oil on the ballast, rust on the sides of the rails, add discarded old rails) and add working signals before you put in lots of intricate buildings at the front of the layout? It will be very hard to do these things afterwards.
Also, I love the idea of a gap between buildings with wooden bracing, hoardings and lots and lots of rubbish and weeds. It would look amazing, and make a good gap for seeing trains.
Thanks James. So the track itself is already painted. I’ve never seen rusty tracks in a busy mainline station before. They are usually a very dark brown, almost black. So I painted them that way before ballasting. The ballast does need weathering in the station itself but the buildings won’t make that any harder. I can still get over them easily enough. Electronics holds no interest for me so there will never be working signals in Chandwell. I may one day add dummy colour light signals but I’ll only ever get round to that once all the buildings are finished because it is in those where my interest lies.
Yes, brilliant.
Thank you!
More inkscape more slowly. Great job. Even though i have used inkscape for modeling quite a bit, you always show features i did not know of.
Slow Inkscape will come in the special series I mentioned. Bear with me and we'll get there!
Having a second empty space to view through would certainly add variety to the views, I don't think I would take it right into the cellar but rather have it as a work in progress, perhaps the upper residential flat had a gas explosion and that blew out the walls, now after a while for various legal reasons the builders are just starting on the restoration of the old structure (perhaps it's a listed building because of it's age) so maybe you get just the start of the build near the bottom with new stonework in the same style as the old for a bit more of that variety you like
Yeah, that could work. Thank you!
Awesome update and insight. Don't change what you do...and as for the last "question"; how rude! Love the way you handled it with your usual humour. As someone who has downloaded inkscape but yet to use it a tutorial series sounds great...just set your expecations of some of our competence low😉😂
Keep up the good work!
Andrew🙂
Thank you Andrew. It's always lovely when you pop by with a comment or two!
Banger. Great ending
Thank you!
Total LOL at the clap and change at the end, real "Street Theatre" (groan).
Never mind the nay sayers Michael, it's your railway, your channel, and yours to do with as you wish.
Our appetite is whetted, I look forward to Fridays in Chandwell, I have my platform soles on, my flares, I have the entrance fee to the Disco in Buffers, and the possibility of a pull. Let's go!!
George
:) Thanks George! See you down in Buffers.
Once again, inspirational, educational and entertaining - especially the ability to now make minor (0.16mm) adjustments, alterations and so on.
Personally, I love the idea of a dedicated series exploration of INKSCAPE and will most likely add such a series to a download collection first chance I get.
Sydney (Australia) recently had a major fire and a large building was completely destroyed and is now a hollow, burnt out, precariously leaning collection of walls and rubble...City is in process of removing it so the surrounding streets are closed off for now. I have managed to gain access to the architectural drawings of this building and have entered them into INKSCAPE for modification and modeling in my urban scene...Your discussion of a deep hole and demolished building brings many thoughts and ideas and - like you - I am not sure if Chandwell would benefit form such a view...maybe in th PROCESS of demolition?
Still the ONLY N Gauge city I would ever wish to visit
Thank you once more for a great video and magic video skills. That was VERY funny.
I like the idea of a building in the process of being demolished.
Enjoyed your video and liked thanks for sharing DD.
Thanks for watching
Your welcome
@@Chandwell
Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. Enjoyed every bit of that and the ending had me laughing. I look forward to the Inkscape series and of course the build as it develops. Nice one.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your videos, agree with others, don't change a thing. We all know you own inscape 😊 have personally learnt alot from your explanation of its use. Although I will be honest it's annoying you can do it all so quick 😂😂😂. Keep it up 😊
Awesome! Thank you!
Inspiring stuff as always Michael. I'm really looking forward to the build. More Inkscape videos would be good.
There will be a series eventually!
Love it, love it, love it. I assume that was your lad and if so, any participation in the modelling? Everything was answered as one expects from you Michael, with clear and concise explanations. One rule I have always adopted is the old favourite...its my train set and I'll do what I like. However that's easy for me because I actually model a prototype.....Armathwaite on the Settle and Carlisle line. But I guess that is what you are doing too except you are transplanting the prototypes to a new location. Cheers, Bob
Thanks Bov - yeah Canandwell is a kind of prototype in that it at least has real elements. That was my boy and other than being the voice of "Ben" of "Ben's Beds" in a previous episode, he's not been doing any modelling.
A masterpiece in modelling, cannot wait to see Station Road evolve and added to Tourist board tour
Oh yeah, I'll have to book Britney in for the tourist video!
This was fantastic. I’m just grateful to have found a channel that I enjoy this much. Keep up with the balance you’ve landed on and don’t get discouraged! The build is looking amazing. Look forward to this series as it progresses through the different phases.
Awesome, thank you!
lol, change it! Brilliant!
🤣🤔
I’d never have known about Inkscape if it wasn’t for finding your channel, and you’re really helping me learn how to use it. Don’t stop what you’re doing. It’s great and very informative.
Fantastic layout too. Being from Wakefield originally I really love seeing bits of Yorkshire come to life.
Can’t wait for your tutorial on Inkscape. Beginner ready.
Happy to hear that! Thank you.
Chandwell seems to have discovered the "Elixir of Youth!" Is it the Waters or a secret brewing from a curtain cave-dwelling Hermit?
Hahahaha! Maybe that WAS "Stanley" ... ?
Great stuff! 👍
Thank you!
Love it! 😂
Thank you!
Awesome, looking forward to Station Rd! If you want to do the hole, but also keep the fronts - why not have a demolished house where they kept the front of the building standing (to preserve the charm and character of Chandwell of course)? It would give you the best of both worlds. Which leads me onto the next question: will all buildings in Station Road be occupied, or will some be boarded up?
I like that idea. At least one property on the street will be boarded up.
@@Chandwell good luck with the build!
I love the feel of station road, and it feels like a space I'd want to visit. the density of shops and doorways giving great visual interest as you move down the street.
This might be a nock against it in the context of Chandwell!
I think a "missing tooth" in station road could bring things back down to earth. It could also expand on your options for framing the trains beyond and give an opportunity for some new modeling techniques. The remains of burnt out framing and construction fencing could be an interesting challenge.
Thank you - all very considered and wise words. I will think on all of that.
It's going to look so good! I completely agree about the rooflines as well. I feel like weird, complicated rooflines are such a staple of Victorian/Edwardian architecture, especially up North. I also really love the level stretch, it just fits to me that some old architect really thought levelling out the slope was a genius move and it would look magnificent. I like the idea of a missing building and a big hole, but I think because it's front and centre, it could end up being a bit distracting. Maybe if one of the shops on the end was burnt out and boarded up or something? That way it's not grabbing all the attention but it still has that nice, "Chandwell is slowly crumbling into the ground" vibe!
Thank you - and yeah, I agree about strange Victorian rooflines. Unsure about burnt out building, but there will be a couple boarded up and maybe with a missing roof.
Great riposte to that last comment!
Had fun with that one.
Good idea with that hole ... sad idea to miss one only house ... why not: building both and give them the possibility to change ... monday with that hole ... thursday with a house ... put it in ... draw it out ... an ugly hole would be a very interesting modelling
That’s a great idea and one I will ponder now that several people have suggested it. Thank you.
@@Chandwell nice ... I'm building my railway layout ("Haltepunkt Auwiesen") too with various possibilities, buildings are not fixed so I can change them and play with the time ... old style ... modern style ... or a hole (this was a brillant idea for your layout, so I think to copy it) ... greetings from Roland
I don’t agree with the person who was so rude. I think it’s good to know something about the designer behind the reality. I wonder if he’d tell Mr I K Brunel to change, if possible.
Hahaha. Yeah. Thank you!
Love the Inkscape stuff. Would love to see a dedicated video. I've got the program but haven't really played with it yet.
Coming soon! (I hope!)
😎👍
😎👍🚂
Brilliant. Can't wait to see it being built.
Me neither! :)
Please no gap. The row of buildings looks great as it is. A hole in the ground filled with rubble and shoring timber would look too gimmicky and contrived. Your mock-up is looking great as it is.
You are the only one who has voiced this opinion, yet it is the one closest to my own. Great Minds!
As always loved the weekly video never change just because people say and it's about the layout. and channel
Glad you enjoy it!
Brilliant as always, thank you
With reference to the comment about an open hole/missing building, could it be possible to build both, and alternate what's in the relevant gap, just a thought
It's certainly a good idea and a few have suggested the same thing. I will give it some thought.
good vid thankslee
Thanks Lee.
Again, I think this is the best model railway channel on youtube. Every video is fantastic, and as a west Yorkshire local, it feels so homely! If you want any inspiration for entrance ways, might I suggest looking to Harrogate, far less run down, but some very steep streets
Ah good call on Harrogate. I love the town yet have never really looked at it as inspiration for Chandwell. Thanks for the tip.
