What are these tiny shop front models made from? N Scale model shop fronts for Station Road

  • These shop fronts are just made from paper and a bit of waste acetate from a food packet. In this video I show how I thought in layers to make the shops have a subtle 3D appearance that really works once they are placed on Station Road at the front of my N Scale model railway layout set in a run down West Yorkshire town in 1993.

    There really is something really special about looking at these time capsule buildings you're creating. Something about the glow of grimey windows and things going on inside and just out of view. The imagination fills in the rest and gives it an atmosphere that takes your mind to some special places. I once worked in WuHan central China, and it was at the turn of the millennium when it had long been back in 94 when China Rail stopped using steam locos, but there was rumours that some large industrial factories ran a branch line and had two steamers still in service. I went walking tracks for miles and came upon a small enclave of small trackside homes, all with oil lamp glows in the windows. And then I heard the deep murmuring of a huge beast sitting in a siding building up steam. I then enjoyed a few hours of watching it switch cars, and then head off. One of my favourite railway moments, and partly because of the small atmospheric buildings. I get the same feeling of intrigue and atmospherics when I look at your brilliant buildings. Watching this video I see you're hand creating the artwork too, I was already impressed and assumed you used photo cut outs. This is splendid craftsmanship of the highest order. Just remembering the noise and speed of the spindles when rewinding an E240 ferric VHS tape 😅

    Hi Michael, sorry it’s taken a few days but I’ve had a few things going on…..thanks for another excellent video which has given me much inspiration!
    Station Road and the shop fronts is a great bit of work and though I’ve seen the previous layered paper fronts (such as Lassbrokes) watching these videos builds upon that. Notably the work on the corner (Jasmine) and the extra glazing and Inkscape effects. This is just what I need as my next terraced project will involve a small corner shop and layering paper will give a much more workable and pleasing product as opposed to layering thin card. I know if I was to do my corner pub again I would use this idea instead.
    The effects are great and while I would never have thought of a disused shop, you’ve achieved the impossible and made the abandoned so alive with its contrast with the street around, it really drives the atmosphere home.
    Cheers Michael and looking forward to the next one!
    Alex

I also very much like the angle poise lamp behind you, but that's a different subject - except that it is certainly an object bought by someone who understands style and design very well. @@Chandwell Michael I was thinking of some Chandwell Lore type videos. Correct me if I’m wrong wasn’t there an incident in the Royal Scot Ballroom at Britney’s Wedding Reception, perhaps just that part is there. Another Video transfer from film of the 1984 Chandwell Moor Leg of the Rally that includes Johnny McShay incident with the peasant. Maybe bootleg copy of the CCTV footage from either Rev’s, Ben’s Beds or Club Passion of Liam Thistles Arrest. Or pirate copy of snooker player Jack The Breeze Sharpnay drunkenly climbing Rose Beck Bridge, or his Rescue by the Fire Brigade from a local TV Station News Report. Or I’m I spilling the beans too much. Ian

    ! enjoy watching your videos but it has just struck me that Station Road must only have buildings on one side of the road! Otherwise, instead of the numbering being 1A, 1B, 2, 3A, 3B it would be 1A, 1B, 3, 5A, 5B etc.

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  6 месяцев назад +1

      It has buildings on both sides of the road, but I'm only modelling this side. So far we have 1A, 1B, 1, 3A, 3B, and 5. The Railway pub was one building until the 70s when it was cut in half. They kept the address as "1 Station Road" so the "new half" became 1A and 1B. The middle building, 3, was split into 3A and 3B in the 1960s. The tower, which is now Jasmine Tandoori, has always been number 5.

      I discuss this quite often on my channel. Until such a time that I can’t wield the knife properly, I’m not going to buy one. A few reasons. One is space. I have nowhere to put it. We have enough electronic gadgets in our house. Two is I simply LOVE cutting with the knife. It’s a way to relax on a mindless task and it really helps me unwind. I’d miss that if I used a machine. It’s the main part of the making for me, and I would struggle to look over my completed models and get the same sense of accomplishment and pride that I get knowing I’ve done it all myself with a scalpel.
