You know it!
"What kind of guitar company would pretend their cheaper guitars are the same as their more expensive guitars by giving it the same thing on the headstock?"
Oh I know this one! Ibanez, ESP, Schecter, Fender, Music Man, G&L, PRS, Jackson, Gretsch.... funny how common that is. Of course Gibson is decades behind catching up with everyone else.
Doesn't ESP still use the Ltd. brand? And Music Man uses Sterling. Fender uses Squier.
@@wbfaulk Yeah. And everything is an LTD except rare & expensive custom shop stuff (outside of Japan) as far as I know. Anecdotally people just call LTD, ESP. Which is exactly what I've started doing with Epiphone. They're all Gibsons now.
Epiphone V, Explorer...
@@StupidGuitar I'm aware of E-II. However given your assertion that LTD is a different name than ESP I skipped over E-II as those also don't say ESP. That's all.
@@StupidGuitar May want to reread the "as far as I know" and maaaybe realize this nit you are picking has nothing to do with the point I was making.
Every other brand has been doing what Epiphone is starting to do. Gibson is just the last to do it. Every Gibson is a Gibson now.
You are rapidly becoming a new favourite RUclipsr lately with videos like this! Worthwhile content presented in an entertaining way!
That Epiphone SG Custom has like, US$750 worth of pickups, so a massive price hike is pretty much expected and justified.
I don't care about Epiphone not having the Gibson headstock, i care more about the Les Paul horn not being narrower and pointier like a Gibson.
I'd settle for Les Pauls 1) staying in tune for longer than 15 minutes when playing and 2) fixing that sh*tty headstock angle that guarantees a break if the guitar touches the floor. Gibson's adherence to what is clearly a design flaw for durability just reinforces that if you own an LP, you've bought form over function.
Sold my Joe Pass emperor pro for this reason. That and I had started to show some movement though straight.
@@lefthandpath1587the only thing that has more cheesy cliches than your comment is Every Rose Has A Thorn
@@davedavid7061that isn't an Authentic Kalamazoo epiphone headstock resell value because of that exact reason will be low on the used market the ones that will sell and up in value will be the epiphone custom Modern figured all with the Kalamazoo headstock that's the reality of this
@@davedavid7061 the epiphones with the Gibson headstocks won't have high resell value because of the Gibson headstock on the epiphones it's not the proper Kalamazoo headstock I just sold last month a 2021 epiphone limited exclusive Run modern figured Sg for $1,000 it's been discontinued..it has there original Kalamazoo headstock its very unlikely you'll get that type of money for a Gibson headstock epiphone.
You wait until Gibson start using the old Epiphone headstock shape for "cost saving measures" 😉
I really enjoy your presentation. Great stuff, thanks
You are right, no one is forcing anyone to buy the epiphones. It is a shame that they are making the guitars how most people have wanted for years, just a shame that they aren’t priced for the masses anymore.
I suppose I’m stuck in early 2000’s pricing when Gibson was cheaper than these. Times change
I get it with pricing I have a nice USA Strat with Custom Shop pickups its a 2012 that I got for around $750 a few years ago I would not pay current prices for it and the MIM Player Plus is $1000 with some nice features but it just doesn't add up. Gibson has not ever been priced for the masses and if Epi is going to go all in with high level models they won't be either.
I just don't get this fanaticism for the Gibson headstock. The old slimmer Epi headstock is much more ergonomic as it has a straighter string path to the tuners.
Yeah but the end of it doesnt look like a 1920's handlebar mustache so there's no way I'd pay $2k+ for one
I feel like the biggest visual difference between PRS, S2, and SE is the carve of the face of the body. The mainline PRS has a smooth carve, while the S2 has bevels to a flat face. (Kind of like the carve difference between a Les Paul and an SG.) It used to be that the SE also had the beveled flat face, but it looks like they've changed that to be a shallower smooth carve recently.
Andy; I have an S2 Vela in white (gloss) and it's ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT! Pull the trigger, sir.
So
Excited for the Epiphone stuff and the Beetronics Wannabee. Thanks for these videos Andy!
Love the iceman hanging on the wall. I bought a brand new reissue that they did in the late 90’s, should have never sold it!
Just bought the Epiphone 1959 ES-355 today at my local shop. Wow. Amazing guitar. And I traded in 2 guitars and an amp and got $625 off the price.
There is one spec change in the new PRS S2 models: the Vela (both solid and semihollow) has a PRS Narrowfield humbucker in its neck position.
Thanks!
Good stuff!
This show gets better and better 🤣🤘
I like what Iam seeing and hearing so far. I own a few Gibson Les Paul's and considering purchasing one of the new Epiphones.
They did the headstock, but kept the 3 screw truss rod cover. I know the Epi's have no material there for the middle screw to go into, but it's still a bit disappointing.
I did not notice that. Dang
I always felt the need to buy something when I got into a guitar shop and it's empty aside from me. I ended up getting a pack of strings, and as of now, I have about 130 new packs, from electrics to nylon classical to flatwound.
My pick of the week is definitely the S2! That PRS S2 I recently played at a certain music store (🤭) still haunts me to this day... The new Epiphones are pretty cool too. First time I'm considering adding a LP to the bunch!
American made means nothing to anyone under 30 anymore frankly American made guitars are some of the worst available these days import from japan or just skip
@@bradlivey7867 You're right: I am under 30 and American made means nothing to me. But I really like the S2 guitars, especially the McCarty 594. And I don't like it because of where it's made. Couldn't care less about that tbh!
I bought one. Honestly I play it more than my custom USA.
I'll sit here acting like i dont have a white custom shop Epiphone sitting in my Sweetwater cart currently....😢
Do it… DO IT (use my affiliate link) DO IIIIIIIIT!!!
Hahaha
Honestly, I get it. I’m starting to come around to epiphone… I think I need a lie down
No , i do not think gibson will release an 3e brand , epiphone still makes lower ( bugdet ? ) priced guitars , so why should they ? In fact with the epi brand they fill that gap now , you can buy an epi in any pricerange now , smart business move from the boys at gibson .
I agree its a good business move especially if these new Epi bring the kind of quality control and finish levels they SHOULD at the price point. I am not buying one but for me its more getting the same tones and great players at half the cost with other brands. Gibson robo tuners and anemic pickups a few years ago turned me off to the point I don't see myself going back
@TheGuitarGeek Based on what are you saying the prices are fair for the new Epiphones ?
Please finish that Flying V project!
Once you do it would be great to hear a blind test vs that new s2 and heritage guitar. See if the price matches the tones!
I have an old ECHO BOX which is operated via an 8track tape..which is worn out...does ANYONE know where I could possibly get it RE-TAPED...I'm located in Sydney Australia...any help is appreciated.😊
The Simpllify X does not look simple to me.
s2 is nitro, made in America, and uses the traditional woods… like mahogany and rose wood or ebony. It’s a great way to get into American made guitars with nitro, under $2000.
Arguably more comfortable than the core too.
@@StupidGuitarthe modern figured.. customs and signature models all have 3/4" Canadian maple caps with AAA flamed maple veneer on top nothing cheap about this epiphones are high end and have been since 2019/2020
So does the S2 being all USA mean the CE range will be discontinued? I feel like those are basically the same thing now aren't they?
Probably not. The CE range are for the bolt-on guitars like the CE 24. They are quite popular, especially for those that prefer a brighter attack than a set-neck and the extra durability/mod-ability inherent to a bolt-on.
I just got the sg in and the neck is a bit thicker than a regular 60’s style. I kinda hate the finish is my main problem with this one. I’m gonna rip it all apart and polish it up so it doesn’t looks so fake looking.
Neck is bigger… oh no
@@TheGuitarGeek 3/4 of an inch about at the 1st fret and fattens up to a full inch at the 12th, my custom shop 63 es 335 stays about 3/4 of an inch from 1st to 12th
The US pickups are great, though it seems the price hike is a few hundred, and I've always thought the import pickups were really solid too...
Where's the link for music distribution 101?
I have seen a lot of people getting a bit "upset" regarding Epiphones new high end range, but it's like they seem to have forgotten that you can still get cheap Epiphones. Personally I think that the 1959 ES 355 is actually a fair price. It also has Custombuckers, a 1 piece neck, Grover tuners, Ebony board, proper block inlays, some sort of "historic" stop bar etc for £1199...I mean call me crazy, but I'd happily buy that
Epiphone customs .. modern figured modern figured models have been high end since 2020 nothing new about it and before Norlin ruined epiphone when they took over Gibson epiphones were high end then too
'included footswitch' makes an almost automatic buy if you're in the market.
How often does that happen.
The PRS S2 line is an American made PRS, now with the Core pickups of the higher priced Core line. The PRS S2 line are guitars meant to be played. The PRS Core line are guitars meant to be collected. I've owned both PRS lines, and I'd take the S2 Line over the double priced Core line any day of the week.
I wish Someone did an SD1 into a Rat with a Parametric Mids between the Sd1 and Rat like the Haunting Mids.... 3 in one pedal I could use that in front of almost any amp

@@TheGuitarGeek Thanks again! 🤗
The PRS S2 has the same pickups as the low output core models. Smooth sounding and $500 if you were to purchase them alone.
Exactly - I have been holding off on an S2 because I have never been a fan of the pickups/electronics in the S2's. I actually have liked the pickups in the SE's better. The fact that I can now get a S2 with core pickups now is a game changer for me. Hmm a Chinese Epiphone for 1500 or a USA S2 for 500 more? no question - Ordering my Custom 24 S2 this week !
I get ya, I have a core and 2 SE series and love the sound(s) of both. Never played or actually heard an S2 that I'm aware of but will enjoy the sound I've got. Rock on
The first thing i did to my s2 was upgrade the pickups
The PRS S2 is surely above the MIM Fenders. As a PRS customer I'll say I have a beautiful SE but the S2 is better. The quality is there, "not quite as good" is totally incorrect. And I've always known the pickups were the same, which perform as well as the Duncans, DiMarzios and Gibsons I have (yes I play live a lot). They just don't have he stupid expensive price tag and all the superficial frosting you don't need. The S2 is probably more akin to the upper level standard production U.S. Fender guitars, while the upper level PRS guitars are like a Klon - and all that may imply, good or bad.
PRS should have kept the dot inlays on the standard 22 and 24. They market it as a barebones workhorse, yet decided to throw in that flair. It's tacky af on a basic guitar
Well, I drank the Gibson Kool-Aid and bought the new Epiphone Les Paul '59 (yep, $1299). This was after returning 2 Gibson SG's that had factory defects. This new Epiphone is actually very, VERY good, and the Custombuckers are epic pickups.
I don`t know if it would be a good idea to get the ebony Epiphone wouldn`t it inevitability end unter the heat gun ? ;-) BTW Andy, you pronounced my name in this episode 100% flawless!
It probably would end up being on fire…. I got it right ??? Damn!!
@@TheGuitarGeek Maybe someone will "educate" the world of the big conspiracy, Epiphone repurposed unsold Gibson bodies and the price hike is justified. (after inhaling all the fumes from the burning paint)
Anyway.
Look at the old MIJ Epiphone and Orville/Orville by Gibson guitars from the Fujigen Factory.
Andy, Gibson might bring back the Orville brand. Wouldn’t that be cool? No it wouldn’t, that was a rhetorical question. Oh, and can you give us a link to the gear you’re showing us? 🤪
😂😂😂😂
And they have the cheek to call it a 'simplifier' lol
Personally loving the new range. I get why people are upset at prices but Epiphone are trying to get the brand up marketed. Love Epiphone and the new stuff is incredible. Custom bucker pickups! Mint
You can still buy a £500 Epiphone. Gibson are actually really good at offering very similar guitars at different price points.
I do love those pickups
If I spent 30 minutes with a guitar, it's bought. I avoid in person as much as possible. Only when I have pretty much almost kinda made up my mind. Then maybe I might go in and play it. But there are amps and things . . .
I always ask for a quiet place to check out a guitar. If it doesn’t resonate or sound right to me acoustically, I put it back plugging it in is the last thing I do.
I think the Epi models are a nice step up am not a buyer thats my personal 'done with Gibson' status there are plenty of $1000 and under options for same tone and great playability but the new models from Epi are likely as good as some of the stuff Gibson put out 10-15 years ago.
Andy spicy today it seems
Everybody loves the $700 Epiphones and don't care about the the six piece body which I cannot get past. This is not the same guitar, so maybe it deserves the headstock. Look at he SGs - they are a dead giveaway when you see the proper wood body. They are actually another level of guitar. Helpful hint: want to get around the scrapwood body at the regular price? Get the Koa Top. Since the back has a seam in it I doubt it's a veneer, unless they're REALLY being cheap.
I would be able to buy more Ibanezeseseses, but the fact that they refuse to give names to their guitar kinda turns me off. Can't remember their model numbers. I went straight to Thomann's website using your link to buy that anniversary edition guitar, but Thomann doesn't ship to the US. Glad I can help keep your weasel greased in some way, though.
Authenticity comes with a price tag...
I can't take it anymore. Some-one please explain this headstock hangup! How is it a thing? Go watch the Beatles last impromptu performance January 30th, 1969 - the band climbed five stories to the top of their Apple Corps headquarters and played their last concert together. John Lennon played an Epiphone Casino. ruclips.net/video/oI8Aw0IGM1I/видео.htmlsi=QajxnCPCqyf2mrN1
Go watch Dave Davies (Kinks) playing an Epiphone Casino in the video for "All Day and All of the Night". ruclips.net/video/F4DV-5d6a5g/видео.htmlsi=DpPElDobtKfKcpyC.
This is Rock and Roll history
Epiphone still makes guitars for $500. I don’t know what the problem or confusion is here. These are priced according to being absolutely spec’d to the 9’s. I’ll be going after a couple of these for sure.
Good points. Epi is bringing more choices and Gibson is still considerably more expensive so its not like the Epi version is close to the real deal
It's a quarter-inch jack/plug. It doesn't make any difference if you use metric or not. No one's measuring it. That's just what it's called.
I wish it were that simple
@@TheGuitarGeek It is that simple. If it were a millicubit plug, we'd call it that. I mean, I suppose you could call it a "phone plug", but that doesn't *really* distinguish it from a "miniature phone plug".
Not sure I would ever trust one of these new Epiphones with their one Piece necks after the DG problems.
What are the DG problems? Have you got a link please?
@@TheGuitarGeek The number of people receiving them with pre-installed neck breaks.
Epiphone IS Gibson's affordable entry level brand.
Gibson: hey we can’t sell our guitars for the price folks expect.
Epiphone: (Feeling inspired by Gibson)
Hold my beer 🍺
Epiphone prices getting higher and higher. Imagine that.
PRS just did the exact same thing with the S2 line. Upgrades the pickups and electronics to the American counterparts. There's no difference.
Would you rather buy a $1300 for a MIC Epiphone that has Gibson Custom Shop pickups and comes in a hard case, or would you rather pay $2300 for a MIA PRS S2 that has PRS USA production pickups and comes in a soft gigbag.
In my opinion, it makes no sense to pay for American overinflated labor costs when you can get a guitar with the exact same components as a USA one, just you save $1000 on the labor because it's assembled in China.
With all the changes to Epiphone, they’re closer to moving Gibson to China too. Just need nitro.
A cheap Maestro guitar could be cool. Just don't make it Gibson copies. Something fresh would be fun. Maybe some danelectro vibes.
What everyone is forgetting is that you can't place a cup of tea and biscuits on a modeller

What do I want from Epiphone? I want a new Japanese Elitist series of guitars that, like the original Elitists, rivalled Gibson quality, and in some cases surpassed it. I will not pay these ridiculously inflated prices for a guitar that is made in China, does not have a rosewood fretboard, and still has a veneer on the maple top. Not gonna happen. And I would rather have an Elitist tombstone headstock over a Gibson headstock with the Epiphone name on it. But that's just me.
Lmao I don't and why when the Quindoa epiphone facility is American owned and operated with American and Asian luthiers and only Epiphones are made there..if it was Japanese made not one American luthier would touch it because there aren't any American luthiers but there is at the Quindoa epiphone facility
@@LarrytheMan-uc4ev The best Epis were made in Japan, and the second best were made in the Czech Republic, at Bohemia Musico-Delica. Since when was that a requirement for a guitar to be a good guitar? Also... you need to learn how to spell Qingdao if you want me to take your post seriously. I love it when people try to act like they know what they are talking about when they don't even know where the Epiphone plant is in China. PRS S2 = Solution Searching (for a problem). The reason PRS is suddenly offering US pickups is because they didn't realize their anticipated sales with S2s that were 'kinda sorta mostly American made' at the 2K price point. Folks looked at the value proposition of those versus SEs and said nope, not worth another $1,300. - and they are *still* not.

SE's are high quality guitars. The only selling point of S2 is "Made in America", which nobody except americans care about.

Why can Cort make a $1300 guitar, with 0 resale value with no cynical snide remakes but if Epiphone make a $1300 guitar that has tons of resale value, they're greedy.
Gibson can charge what the market dictates because they retain their value. It almost seems as if Andy is biased against American guitars.

@@xMaoxoaMxthey also make new guitars for $200. Do pretend there aren't others that sell for $1000 and above.

Just listening to your description makes me think it should be called "the complicator" instead - what's more simple than "drop amp on floor then plug in and go?"
Picking up an acoustic guitar is simpler. Just like an electric guitar amp isn’t for someone who is just playing unamplified acoustic, the Simplifiers aren’t for people who are just plugging into an amp. Some of us have had complicated setups that a Simplifier does indeed simplify.

I don't see why the epiphones can't have rosewood I can't believe it costs that much more
I still don't get why its a big deal and to be fair if you have rosewood on the Epi what is really left to set it apart from the Gibson?
@I.am_Groot in Japan the epiphone guitars have had the open book headstock and abr 1 bridges for decades now and they utilize rosewood or ebony based on model. Gibson is greedy and it bothers me that people won't see that
@@victoresarey4036 Gibson being greedy is part of who they are but this Epi move is just good business. If you want rosewood then buy another guitar. Wood is kind of like steak its all meat and when someone says Wagyu it sounds cool but what Wal-Mart sells isn't worth getting excited about. The fretboard material on these Epi models is going to be better wood than many other guitars with rosewood.
That's not an Authentic epiphone you content creators just lie through your teeth and all we have to do is research it not a epiphone Kalamazoo headstock its not an authentic epiphone
got my hands on the new epis they are the same shitty q.c guitars that they always had on offer with a new shape head stock do not fall for the hype and waste your money on something that will not hold any value if it don't say Gibson and your shopping for a Gibson just say no
Agree with all of this except the 'hold value' part -= this is where folks get into trouble. Guitars are not investments. If you want to preserve the value of your dollars, buy stocks. If you buy Gibsons esp. Les Pauls hoping they'll retain or increase in value - well, you're betting on a lot of 55-70 year old men living for another 30 years.
No you didn't not at all your comment proves that
@@StupidGuitar oh yes and very clear understanding because epiphone has that GIBSON headstock there be no real resell value because of that I just sold a 2021 epiphone limited exclusive modern figured Sg for $1,000 dollars and it has the proper Kalamazoo headstock you'll never see that with the Gibson headstock epiphones did you understand what I said
@@StupidGuitar I'm fine start telling the truth and stop trying to justify your stupidity that doesn't work in the real world
No real resell value because of that gibson headstock on the epiphone the ones with resell value will be the epiphones with their Kalamazoo headstocks
I will never pay more than $200 for any Epiphone.. that's nuts!
Your loss dude! You might wanna hold and play one before making such an ignorant statement!
Hey people buy people .that's why I love your channel .
Hi mate , I can't reply back to you on Instagram until you have accepted my invite, I'm the 1 who messaged you about a guitar I have
