Bioactive Ball Python Enclosure with DIY Background

  • This is an enclosure makeover for our rescue ball python, Dora. In it we build a DIY background using cork flats, expanding foam and silicone.
    Then we re-use her soil, which has been "active" for well over a year and is filled with springtails, isopods (dwarf white and giant canyon), roaches and beetles.
    A few of the plants are new and a few of the plants are familiar to her and you'll see her explore every inch of the new enclosure at the end. She has four "hides", a basking platform with UVB and halogen heat, and tons of natural cover from the background and plants.
    Most of the plants (not all) are native to the same ranges in Africa that the snakes is found. This is not necessary for her well being, but adds some fun into the planning of the project.
    I'm more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments. Thanks for watching!

    I’ve never seen anyone make their background using a bunch of half cork rounds it came out really cool I’m big on cork bark, the whole design looks really nice I love how you buried the hides that’s something I would do and your BP looks overwhelmed with excitement, I love when snakes yawn it’s so cute.

    Wouldn’t the wood rot from the moisture and humidity I understand it might sound dumb but wouldn’t you have to rip all that back out start fresh again sometime in the near future it does look really good though and I guess to change it up every now and then keeps the snake stimulated with its enclosure very beautiful enclosure though I’m interested in bioactive setups how often do you renew the substrate I would assume that eventually the substrate would degrade in nutrients and do the isopods and spring tails keep it up with nutrients for how long

    • @jc-zs3yi
      @jc-zs3yi Год назад

      cork bark is usually sold at pet stores because it's more water resistant than most woods, it absorbs less so it doesn't easily rot. not sure about when to change the substrate, I just add more leaf litter sometimes and the CUC will also eat sheds, waste, etc and recirculate that nutrients into the substrate

      That bit about the pants is true to a certain degree, but they’re using several sturdy plant species and the smaller plants are placed either in cork round “planters” or near walls/rocks that help stabilize them. Serpa Design has a cool technique for this on his bioactive kingsnake enclosure.

    • @lashvivs
      @lashvivs  Год назад

      this is an old enclosure but i like using above heaters on thermostats (DHPs and halogens). generally cleaning is really easy, she moves about enough that i can work in spaces that she isn’t occupying. the fear of a bite from her is minimal unless it’s been a long time since she’s last eaten.

    • @HumbugMisfit
      @HumbugMisfit 2 года назад +1

      The springtails and isopods you saw after they added the soil help to eat mold that might start to grow and waste from the snake. The plants also are fertilized by the waste to a degree (a snake this big will produce too much waste for the bugs to clean up on their own so you’ll still have to clean up a bit). This cycle of nutrients helps to create a more natural and healthier environment for your pet if done right.
