Took Ham out, didn't go as planned...

- We planned on having a short intro with Ham getting into his back pack easily with no stress, getting and afternoon drink and heading to the pet store to get Ham a toy. Instead it took 3-5 business days to get Ham into the back pack, Zarafas was closed and Ham hates pet shops! Was Excellent, hope you enjoy!
I have to say thank you, Bridget. So often all we see is the "cute" or "fun" side of owning a parrot, let alone a Ringneck. I applaud you for sharing the struggles with us as well and allowing us to see that, sometimes, it's not all fun and games.
Cockatiel dad here. Parrots are basically 33% dog, 33% cat, 90% toddler.
Well, it was fun & games… for Ham 🤷♀️🦜 Like trying to retrieve stolen socks from furry people who think it’s an awesome game!

@@thepiper5522 as it can/should be. I still miss my little girl every day. My point is that unless one is prepared for the care required, a ringneck might not be the best option. It's like living with a two year old for the rest of their life. They talk, they throw tantrums, they cause mischief, then they look at you and do something so adorable that you can't possibly stay mad. It can be a little hard, but so worth it.

That was was I told about cockatiels... Oh they are so loving, so easily worked with.. always want to be cuddled and loved.... Then you find out they are literally famous for cockatiel rages in the animal world. They nest in my ball gown and ate my loom which isn't the same as the expensive wooden toys I bought that they apparently equate with insulting their mothers. I have literally used the statement.. Sir, I swear the parrots ate my paper, look I brought it to you! Whole days have been spent just keeping them from killing themselves and I can say they don't appreciate my efforts.... I really do love the demon twins though, worth it. Still so nice to see others suffer after all those cute videos that make me feel a little incompetent.

At least unlike the toddler, you don't have to ask the bird, "Are you SURE you don't need to use the bathroom?" about a thousand times, only for RIGHT AS YOU'RE ABOUT TO LEAVE, a little voice pipes up with, "I have to go potty!" 😂

I mean their intelligence can vary but iirc they usually have the intelligence of a human toddler 2-4 years old or something as an adult

I know the feeling of frustrated to tears when a bird just outright refuses to cooperate- i can't count how many times i've had to put cushions on every landing spot downstairs for my cockatiel to get him to stop flying away when I try to take him upstairs to bed XD literal toddlers

Lmao 🤣 😆🤣 I must admit I just told my dog that it’s good to know that we are not alone in our loving frustrationness… as I again showed him the expensive ramp I recently purchased for him to use to come in the house because steps are too hard… that he just shrugged at 🤦♀️🐶💕 And I might have laughed at the trauma of trying to get Ham in his travel pack, while he played ninja games. But I was laughing in empathy! Truly! And thinking that although the wings are an added obstacle, having such a tiny light ninja has up sides compared to the 45kg heavy “I’m a floppy starfish” canine when he doesn’t want to go somewhere that usually has a timeframe attached.

Thank you for sharing this. I see too many parrots do as they're told as it seems so easy. They always make me think what I'm doing wrong because my parrot doesn't listen either. I have to realize you have to do things on their terms. They're just tiny babies. Lol

Now multiply that frustration with a parrot who refused his/ her travel cage, despite having been trained & actually loving the cage, by several. They learn tricks to stymie your plans at every turn. Your sweetie, like my lot, are too smart …. 🤷♀️

I take my bird once a week to my local pet store, he loves it and the birds in cages love it too. As soon as he sees them he jumps on their cages for kisses.
Our cockatiel HATES getting into his carrier but he LOVES riding in the car ... as long as he gets to sit on my daughters shoulder. He's very good and never tries to fly around the car. I don't think Petey will ever be ok with his carrier but he's not traumatized. He's just a big drama queen, rather like Hamlet 😏

I remember trying to force my budgies in their travel cage, but luckily they were small enough to place them in there without struggle. Well done for persevering, the trick is to get them to associate the travel cage with treats👏

Ham definitely bounces off you and the way you let him do things in his own time clearly shows his trust in you, your patience is obviously tested to the limit sometimes and it's a credit to you but you obviously know how important it is to him being happy.
