  • Shri Henry D'Souza was born in Bassrikatte, a small town in Karnataka. He had his primary and secondary education in prestigious Catholic schools and colleges. After graduating from St. Aloysius College in Mangalore, he graduated in LLB from the University of Bombay. He is based in Mumbai and by profession a Financial Consultant. Initially he engaged in a career in journalism, but eventually landed in a promising music career after joining a western music group in 1964.
In 1964, he sang his first Konkani (spoken language in Goa) song on All India Radio. Since then he has sung more than 700 songs. In Mangalore he has been honoured with the title Sangeeth Samrat, and in Mumbai he has been honoured with the title of "Kala Ratna".
In 1971, Henry made history when he recorded the song "Ye Ye Cathrina" with Helen D'Cruz on HMV label. The song became an instant hit on All India Radio, and also in Sri Lanka on SLBC (Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) popularized by the legendary broadcaster Vernon Corea. The song was later sung in Sinhalese by Desmond De Silva & Indrani Perera, and also another version by Luke Henricus. Cathrina also has been sung in Portuguese and Spanish.
Note : Pl. note that female artist in the video is not Helen D'Cruz. Unfortunately, I was not able to find a photo of Helen.

An evergreen song sung by Helen DCruz and Henry D Souza. Helen DCruz hails from Mangalore .And she happens to me my mother in law . :) Lovely lady - of great faith, full of wit, humor, intelligent and with a compassionate heart for the poor and needy. Navaz

Though born in a keralite family we used to listen to this song, early @ 8 am on vividh bharathi( mumbai) way back in 1970's where we had only radio as the sole entertainment, this song is still fresh on my mind..... great song.

Shri Henry D’Souza, the prince and hero of Mother Konkani was born at Bassrikatte, near Koppa, KARNATAKA, (not in Goa as mentioned by you) a small town nestled amidst the beautiful and picturesque Western Ghats well known for their natural beauty.

Thanks for the song!! I knew Aunty Helen D'cruz very well in Kuwait. A close family friend even today. She's crossed a golden 80 years but cannot sing anymore. Glad she was able to make it to my wedding!! Her daughter Marianne is a professional singer and has played singing roles in the movie BLACK. If u recall, there was a party scene where Rani Mukherjee is trying to mouth singing with a lady crooner in a black dress....that is Marianne! :) I will see if i have a picture.

Listening to this song after perhaps 34 years! The last time I heard it was during my IIT days in Kharagpur, and I heard it only once or twice either on SLBC or from one of my Sri Lankan friends. But the tune has stuck in my head all these years! I don't understand Konkan or Sinhalese, but this song is really good. Thank you for uploading.

HI Michael, its called 'Konkani' the native language of Goa. I guess its Portuguese mixed. I listned to this, growing up in Sri Lanka back in the 70s. Thought I'd find it and post it. I enjoy it too although don't understand a word myself. Catchy melody!. Thanks for the comment.

    Hello vilmad007,
Thanks for the lovely comment. I couldn't agree more with you, and you are absolutely right about the simple life we had with just the school and radio. This is what I too enjoy the most about these songs. Those were the days. We were very happy with the little we had, and I don't think it is the same for current generation although they have many other influences.

    Hi Vidhura,
Fully agree with your sentiments. I enjoyed this back in the 70s as a growing up kid, but took me years to find out who sings it, and get hold of the original. The language is 'Konkani', the native language of Goa, India. I believe it is a Portuguese mix. Thanks for the comment. BR.

    Chorus (1)
    He: Come, come, Katrina
She: No, no, I will not come
He: Ill take you from Byculla to Mahim
    From Mahim to Bandra
And in Bandra Ill teach you about love
She: Everytime you follow me shamelessly
Calling out Katrin, Katrin, without any shame

    Hello Namesake Goonewardena
Thank you for this. Some days I play it 5 times in a row.
This Original version is a masterpiece. The man is excellent, the woman is sublime. Perfect diction, pitch, grace notes, ADSR, timing, syncopation, emotion … near 100% in all departments. The backing is expert but sounding as if they are simply having fun. I am Sri Lankan (you know that) but hearing this I know that - with notable exceptions such Amaradeva - Sri Lankans have only moderate amounts of innate musical talent. Maybe raise the bar. BTW would love to have complete translation.

Thanks. I don't believe that Sinhalese versions are copy cats. What I know is that the song was introduced and brought to fame in Sri Lanka and the Asian subcontinent by Vernon Corea of Radio Ceylon and the other broadcasters of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, when Indian Radio refused to give air time for pop songs. At the time, All Asia Service of SLBC and the English Commercial Service of SLBC rocked the region! Vernon Corea also introduced Usha Uthup and Ernest Ignatius to the masses!

    Jude,
Consider uploading the songs in an album called "Gramaphone Baila" that came about 15 years ago in Sri Lanka. The songs are brilliant, but even more so after Stanley Peiris's (I know you're a fan) orchestral re-arrangement. This would make 'goonewj' truly a one-stop shop on youtube! (sorry I didn't respond to your email alert last time, but please continue doing so).

Unfortunately, many of our artists sing others songs with no credit of whatsoever given to the original artists. However, as per your suggestion I will check that CD out. Thanks for visiting and your valuable comment !!

Thanks. That is not so good news if it is correct. I will ask around some who are connected to him. Let us know when you share the other songs. There was one live clip of Ye Ye Catherina I saw last night, performed in Dubai/Abu Dhabi, which looked like Henry singing, but I wasn't sure. May be you want to check that out! Cheers.
