B747 can takeoff with 113000 kg loadout and only with classical containers; An124 - 150000 kg and can load with classical containers cargo with large sizes, such as 6,4X4,4 meters and length 36,5 meters. An124 don't need for special devices to load the cargo. These machines are created for different purposes.

The Antonov An-124 to me, looks a lot like the Boeing Dreamlifter (a heavily modified 747-400 built/designed to carry Dreamliner/B788 parts from world suppliers to Boeing HQ). They're both like porpoises in the air.

Main observation I noted was the 747 can get airborne with about half the length of the runway, while the AN-124 needs almost every inch of the runway before it get's off.

Cargo wise: AN-124. It's more rugged and can hold more weight, but the 747 isn't necessarily a bad choice for Cargo. Commercial Wise: 747 EASILY. The AN-124 is very loud, and is a plane specifically designed for cargo. Plus, Antonov didn't pressurize the main cabin from what I've heard. However, I like the designs of both aircrafts, they are beautiful in their own right.

I think the fundamental difference between these great two airplanes is 747 is originally designed as a passenger plane while 124 is pure for carrying cargo, so from that point of view the high wing design of the 124 could mean easy loading and unloading for the 124 than for the 747, but 747 is a much prettier airplane and proven to be the workhorse for the cargo industry. I like the 747 better.

At the time it was designed it was only expected to serve a few short years as a passenger carrier before it was expected to be superseded by supersonic jets for passenger travel and relegated to freighter use thereafter. That's why it has the cockpit above the main deck, so the cargo compartment could run the length of the plane, and be loaded and unloaded through the nose.
It appears the Soviet first high bypass turbofan might be loosely based on Rolls Royce RB211 (the sound is almost similar and have three spool design). in early 70's the soviets was in fact intended to copy RB11, but Rolls Royce want to sell the engine in volumes... you know how cunning the Soviet spies are...anything is possible.
Max. cargo w.: 747-400ERF -- 112.760kg, 124-100-150 -- 150.000kg Max. passengers: 747-400D -- 660 passengers (1 class vers.), 124-100 -- 880 full equipped soldiers. But An-124 was designed as a cargo plane, may be better compare it with C-5 ?

It's sad how our World restricted behind our nations! These two planes are the perfect example how our world is divided by stupidities but at least, everyone can build plane and imagine if they had shared these knowloadges between each other! Thanks for sharing and happy weekend
visually, the russian looks more rugged, probably due to its less open design, more stable, due to its short suspension movement and less care of the pilots for a very slow touchdown and yet less rotation during take off, and more reliable, probably due to the less flexibility of its empenage and wings. the american sounds better and looks like the pilot feels more encouraged to make more inputs (and this may prove the reliability and versatility to be higher on the american).
I have to put in my 2 cents worth: The 747-400, and -8 freigters are far more elegant than the the An-124 in my opinion. The Antonov looks like a big, ugly boxcar on wings to me, though it does have a powerful sound to it.
These two aircrafts have similarities in the design of their noses, except the Boeing has a partial hump to it. And both also have 4 engines on their wings.

I always thought the B747 was initially created for the military. I think it lost against the C5 Galaxy.

the 747 program was actually initially designed for cargo use hence the cockpit placement above the nose allowing the nose to open for large loads
