    1) Get a good therapist
    2) Find and go to a "Group"
    3) Have supportive friends
    4) Family, that leaves me out of that one
    5) Do activities you like
    6) Maintain good physical health
    7) Keep things different and engage
    8) Have proper nutrition
    9) Get good sleep.

People always list this type of thing, and it's great. But what am I to do when I'm too zoned out to exercize, or too anxious because of my delusions to sleep? How am I supposed to benefit from support groups when the whole point of support groups is to drag you down and keep you navel gazing and not actually improving? What do I do if I don't have any friends?

    • @inordirection_
      @inordirection_ 3 года назад +1

@@professionalpainthuffer Good points, mental illness has a way of being self-reinforcing at times. I would say it's important to just be as committed as you can to yourself and your recovery, and to take whatever small steps you can based on what you feel able to do in a given moment. Eventually these small steps add up and make other positive acts of self-care easier and easier. Try just tackling one or two of these aspects at a time, setting small daily goals for yourself which you check in with each day until you turn the action into a habit and move onto another point. A good place to start is keeping a journal or mediation, as alongside therapy these habits can give you the self-awareness and peace of mind to make improving your life in other areas easier.

xHaniffax what you’re looking for is a service dog, not a therapy dog as therapy dogs are for general people in hospitals and places for comfort to the public. Service dogs are highly trained dogs to keep you safe and sound and give you that comfort although that part is is not a job. There is no registration for a service dog but there is a test that therapy dogs need to pass to be safe for the public as THATS who they’d be serving. I personally have a service dog for crippling mental illnesses and for my drops in blood pressure. Although to have a service dog you have to be disabled and unfortunately I was dubbed disabled by my psychiatrist. Good luck on your journey

      @IMissMrKitty 3 года назад +2

N Nicole I have Bipolar Type 1 with Psychotic thoughts and it's horrible. I started eating MUCH healthier and in one month my psychotic thoughts are gone. I have cut way down on my sugar intake (by 75%). I don't hardly ever consume white refined sugar anymore. I eat dates, organic raw coconut sugar, and organic 100% raw honey occasionally. I've cut out all fried foods, all fast food (I don't go out to eat anywhere), all processed foods (including any canned soups, flavored beans, and all vegetable, chicken, & beef broths as they ALL contain MSG even if they say they don't). Basically all I eat is fresh produce (organic if you can afford it) except corn as it's GMO, canned beans that have no preservatives, frozen vegetables (also no preservatives), frozen fruit, pasture raised or local eggs, organic milk (but I mostly consume almond milk), and I try to avoid carbs as much as possible. I read all labels and if it contains Aspartame, Sucralose, yeast extract, Monosodium glutamate, vegetable oil, canola oil, soy oil, sodium benzoate, sulfites, Hydrogenated Oils, Margarine, carrageenan, natural flavors (really means artificial flavors), anything with a scientific chemical name that I don't recognize I put it back on the shelf or in the garbage. I'm going to improve my diet enough and balance out my vitamins and get off all of my prescriptions. BTW you need your vitamin D level way higher than they recommend. 50-70 is good. Not 30. Take 10,000-20,000 iu D3 with 100 micrograms of vitamin K2 for every 10,000 iu of Vitamin D3. Get probiotics everyday. I take kefir. Watch Dr. Berg, Dr. Mark Hyman, and FlavCity with Bobby Parrish. They'll really help you know what to consume. We don't have to live like this forever. We just have to fix our bodily problems through a whole foods diet. But it could take awhile as the western diet wreaks havoc.

I have schizophrenia and I have been capable of managing my symptoms with simply accessing the level of awareness within us all which is rather independent of any external, or even internal, stimuli and I also have recently been seeing a weekly therapist, just to have some connection with a professional who can keep an eye on my progess. I don't take any anti-psychotics, simply because I couldn't care less for the side effects of them, and I am well aware of my symptoms and capable of staying aware and present throughout the day. However, it is still very hard for me to focus on things like school and work, since much of my time is spent looking inward and my mind may not be capable of performing certain kinds of tasks. Despite this, I am able to remain happy, safe, and healthy. I personally do not view schizophrenia as an illness for these particular reasons. I view it as a condition which can cause some to feel ill and some to simply be disabled by capitalism's standards.

Your medication is just as important as Insulin for the diabitic patient and Chemo for the cancer patient, Thrombolytics for the heart patient. The psychiatrist who prescribes your medication for schizophrenia, treats this brain disorder equally as serious. The patient must take their medication along with therapy and a healthy life style to achieve the best results for continued life long healing.
    * all those medications given to the diabetic patient , the cancer patient and the heart patient all have side effects too.

I have been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder 2 and a half years ago after suffering and living with it since I was born. I was very manic as a baby, child and teen. I was a low functioning girl throughout my whole life. My symptoms got worse after 20 years old and thank Goodness for that because that was the only way they found out I was in fact living with scitzoaffective disorder. I am taking medication that is fit for me for 2 years. Recently for about 9 months I've been living the best years I can possibly live. I only wish I would've been diagnosed as a child and would've been happy, confident, full of personality and life as I am now. A therapist is very helpful and the mere fact that I choose to change my mindset. The pills itself doesn't do all of the trick. It's the choice that you make. That you are incredible with this addition to your life. You are so unique and great. Life is amazing especially when you know how you are able to live after going through so much. Choose activities, learn, find amazing people, and explore. This isn't an illness. It's what makes you Great.

Lauren, you said something that reminded me of this.
One thing that we do in 12 step work is working with others. This is an always go-to when I seem to be struggling. It enables me to get out of myself (which is usually a bad place to be ... in my head.)
Working with others can be as simple as being at a meeting listening and sharing. It can be walking with another, as you said. It can even be volunteering at a senior home, sitting with someone with Alzheimer's or someone who has no one left (family).
These techniques and others have kept me from drinking for awhile, but mostly from losing my mind and hopefully keeping me somewhat humble, besides possibly helping others.
Thank you again for what you and Rob do for us.

The more people who care about someone with this disorder, rather than fear them, the more those people will be invested in societal change and treatment. We need so much more research and community education in battling this illness. It's very distressing that you have to suffer this way, Lauren. But your willingness to fight through, and bring us with you, will change the world.

Hi Lauren! Good vídeo! I'd like to suggest you just an opposite vídeo, i mean, things that prejudicate a good life with schizophrenia. Like anti-tips.
1- Don't take the medications (looks obvious but lots of people quit medication for several reasons, like side effects, paranoia, or feeling they're ok after a while and don't need the medication anymore)
2- Drugs and alcohool abuse. (according to the researchs that's pretty common with people living with schizophrenia).
3- Avoiding people. (that's also common, because there is too much prejudice and unfamiliarity around us and the illness, that makes us just to run away).
4- Don't trust in yourself as being capable of living independently. (that's for us and family and close people).
5- Feeling that you're not able of being loved by others because your illness.
6- Push yourself too hard and have unreal goals.
That's it. Wish you like it!
    Thanks for your work!

Nice video. It's also extremely important to have a good cry when you feel in the mood. People with schizophrenia and those around them can get nervous about emotions - thinking of them as the psychosis starting up again etc. and try to inhibit them in various ways. Crying is different, it may be unfortunate that something has happened that makes you want to cry, but the crying itself is extremely beneficial.

But everybody else in there is diagnosed bipolar or Autism and roughly deals with a lot of the same issues. It does help a lot to talk with others that experience similar things as I do. And since I don't want to take the medications because I'm still pretty low on the Spectrum and other medical reasons.
I am looking for more holistic Avenues myself. I find a good multivitamin and daily supplements help mine and my family's moods greatly along with some mindfulness practices to help understand triggers and such. I don't think regular medical doctors will tell you a lot of alternative ways to help increase brain health, but there are some more holistic PPO doctors that will discuss a few things with you without having to go to a holistic doctor. There is a ton of information on the internet on how to keep your brain healthy and what supplements and such that can help such as ginkgo biloba which is one of the better once I found. Omega 3s as in fish oil and flaxseed oil can help your heart and your brain. I think my biggest issue is blood flow to the brain because vascular dementia runs in my family. so with anyting you try it is also very very important that you drink plenty of water to keep the blood and fluids flowing. a lot of people don't take a look at their diet either. maybe they're not getting enough vitamins or they are investing inflammatory substances that their body does not like but doesn't present to be an issue that a doctor will recognize easily such as gluten allergies.
I also just joined a group on Facebook just for people with schizophrenia. there are a lot of us out there that are confused and think recovery means cure. the best we can hope for medicated or not is stability.

You might be interested to know about a video game called Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, it's a game set in the Viking age and you play as Senua a woman who suffers from psychosis while trying to save the soul of her lover from Helheim, the game was developed alongside a group of doctors and people who have actual psychosis such as Schizophrenia, and is hailed as one of the most accurate depictions of mental illness in media, several fans have mental illnesses who praise the game as it helped others who don't have mental illness understand what it's like for those that do.

That is an excellent game. I have played through all of it and appreciate the accuracy of the many different kinds of experiences someone with psychosis or schizophrenia may have.
However, I can tell you first hand that the game can be very triggering. Anyone with a mental illness similar to Senua should be cautious in deciding to play it.

I just found that viewing my schizophrenia with a spiritual mindset helped me a lot. I keep it lowkey, so I only look as excentric, I guess.
I journal because I don't like being stimatised as sick, so I don't talk about it other than in anonymity. I view it as a mediumnity gift. Sometimes it feels like it.
Sometimes it feels like a total bliss. Like talking to the dead loved ones and angels and everything positive.
Sometimes it feels like a walk through hell as i'm super aware of energies; so if I feel down it may turn into a constant state of internal fight.
My spiritual mindset makes me very effective on this with my experience. I also tries my best to be vegetarian, to avoid Abusing substances
and to adopt a lifestyle that suits me well. I found a way to face adversity and be comfortable in discomfort; still, some symptoms occurs when I'm overwelmed.
It makes me stronger. Maybe it's placebo effect. I don't care. You may call it psychosis. I call it spiritual warfare. It makes me feel a sense of purpose with it as I believe I didnt have to physically interfer because I view it as mind and emotions of communities and individualities smashed together. I choose to stop pharmaceutical medication for natural treatment like St. John's Wort. It's a personnal choice and I know it doesnt suit everyone. At least I dont feel suicidal anymore about the side effects of my meds. Stay strong, everyone, there is hope!

When your medication causes restlessness, and your muscle relaxer makes you take short naps... yep, forget sleeping well! It's so important, too =(. Thanks for the videos. Recently told my sort of working diagnosis is schizoaffective disorder. Fun times! Diet usually helps with weight gain more than exercise, but exercise is important too. I've had to drop my calories significantly, thanks to other medications for physical ailments, and I'm losing instead of gaining now. It's not the most ideal situation, but it's effective. Dealing with these diagnoses in the US is a whole different animal, but I wish anyone in treatment (or not in treatment, because 'Murica) the best.

I just got my meds increased. Ive been doing good. I hardly hear voices or see things anymore. But that doesnt mean i dont get depressed or delusional. I started working and going to school recently. It feels like a lot sometimes and all i want to do is isolate. Last year i was in the mental hospital and couldnt spend christmas with my family. Ive gone there many times. But through meditation, calling and socializing a bit, some of my very few hobbies i have been able to do, and therapy im getting way better. They say i changed a lot. Do u have any tips on what to do when i feel scared or want to quit? Also does medication build a tolerance and end up needing to be dosed higher? I dont wanna get sick again

I had always dreamt of a big facility where ppl with anything could come for help.
There'd be a school built straight in it for teaching all aspects, psychology, doctors specific to and modern medicine/meds.
There could be counselors for sessions, group sessions, as well dwellings for ppl that need a set time.
If ppl just seek help that's cool, but if some wanted to they could attend the school sections so that students would have someone actually going thru it to help guide the classes.
And decisions wouldn't just be by staff so to say, patients would also attend meetings so that all parties could put their heads together to make things even better.
There'd be foods, a place to walk about, pond etc. Workout facility.
And my fav for council sessions, a puppy/kitty store where they raise them to sell at the facility.
So when going into therapy session, you go pick ur fav cute lil puppy. I think it'd help alot IMO.

I may have missed you covering off this topic, but if you haven't, could you please tell us how the two of you approach these events with your kids? I was a child of a mother with schizophrenia, and I believe my parents should have tried to find a way to explain 'why' she behaved the way she did towards us, at times. As a child, the environment was extremely confusing.

Can you tell what medication you are on, because you are in great shape and as far as I know that most antipsychotic medications make you gain weight and it is difficult to maintain good shape when you are on them.

I've had schizoaffective disorder for 9 1/2 years. I struggle with thought broadcasting more than any other symptom. I get stuck in my head thinking the voices I'm hearing are actually just neighbors, family, friends hearing my thoughts so I send what I think is telepathic prompts to them. Makes me question if I even have schizoaffective disorder.
