    My hat is off to you Lou. You have way more patience than I do. With missing parts and electronics that are a sad joke I would have boxed it all up and shelved it. 👍👍

    Hi Lou, first - let me say that I really enjoy your uploads! It's my Saturday morning routine to watch your weekly videos:) So thank you very much! Anyhow about the Kirov Airship - it is indeed a soviet unit from Westwood's real-time strategy game "Red Alert 2" from the year 2000 that was part of an alternative reality of the command and conquer series. The plot (back from the first red alert game back in 1996) is that in 1946 Albert Einstein went back in time to 1924 and killed a young Austrian dude with a short mustache and a tight black hairdue... changing the history so nowadays the soviets are kicking and stronger than in our timeline. And the Kirov airship was one of the game's strongest unit. Here is the trailer of the game I found on RUclips. You can see the first glimps of the airship at 1:11 in a cut-scene video, and an actual gameplay of it starting from 1:37. Oh and indeed - the original color was a golden-mustard one:) ruclips.net/video/wpTJlayj1mU/видео.html

    Lighter than Airships are divided in two types; Ridgid Airships (Zeppelin, internal structure and separate internal gas bags) and Blimps (Goodyear Blimp, basically a balloon). The model is a Ridgid airship.

    Hi Lou, You might not want to apply your source directly to the LED's because it looks like the current limiting resistor(s) are on the board. The LED's won't last too long without the current limiting. If you need help figuring out the proper resistance for whatever power source you decide to use, Let me know. Sorry it is turning into a headache..

    I'm wondering if they put the motors on a separate set of batteries because they created line noise that made the LED's flicker.

    Wow! What an ambitious model design! Lights! Motors! Switches! Maybe too ambitious. Seems that maybe the company that made it couldn't quite live up to their aspirations. If anyone can make a silk purse out of this sow's ear, it would be you, Sir! I look forward to your plans to redeem this kit!

    My thoughts would be (1) Since it's not a Soviet berigible, fill in all the holes for those markings. (In my opinion that red classes with the blue, and the black gondola is too bare. I know your not done). (2) Figure out the lighting (forget whats' there, do what you want to the lighting, such as in what colors for what purpose?). (3) Maybe a small remote cont. board to control the electrical? (4) Power it all with 5V. (5) Hang it from the ceiling on a swivel, so it can go around in circles when power is applied. (6) Make lemonade of this sour lemon, and have fun. Loved the video as always, don't give up, keep it up.😅

    @spacedock873 4 дня назад +1

    Hi Lou. The one word that kept going round my head while watching this video was "lemonade"! This is really odd as Border Models do some decent military kits but right from the start this rang alarm bells for me. It is very different from other Border kits that I have seen which makes me wonder if it is actually rebadged from another (less professional) manufacturer. The 1/n scale leads me to believe that the 'n' was just a placeholder in the box art that was never replaced with the correct number. The reason that the LED's are all red becomes apparent - reds can be run directly off 3V so saving the cost of a power board and resistors. Also, they can use 3V motors directly. The QC obviously isn't up to Border Models' usual standard with an entire frame missing, which also indicates a bought-in kit. So, on balance, do you think the inclusion of a lighting, wiring and motor kit was a plus or a minus? Apparently the EU version of this kit doesn't include the wiring kit, possibly because it doesn't meet EU standards. The blue paint you found looks lovely - almost identical to the "shark fin blue" I used on my Spectrum SPV. Let's hope you can make something out of this dog's breakfast (good luck getting replacement parts!), but if you bin it and start something new next week I'm sure we will all understand. It would just be a rather expensive kit in the bin! 😵‍💫

  • @markfergerson2145
    @markfergerson2145 4 дня назад

    In your place I would repurpose it as a Steampunk Airship Pirate vessel (see: the band Abney Park). The hammer and sickle logos can be filled in and covered with the Jolly Roger, and the rest of the model can be left more or less as is, of course you will still have to scratchbuild the remainder of the base.
    The wiring looks like it went through four or five revisions until someone said “just ship it” but the illustrations were never updated to whatever the final revision was. I’m with you on chucking what you were given and doing a redesign. It won’t be that complicated what with no blinkers.
    Pretty expensive for what was in the box but I have faith in you. You can make something beautiful out of it, Lou.

    RA2 was such a fun game - played it to death - and again recently when it was revamped. The countries were very cartoon-ish and Ray Wise as the President was brilliant casting although the Agent Tania character is more than annoying. But what other game has metal spiders, mind controlled quid and Flying Saucers and Einstein prism tanks.
    Looking forward to getting some of the kits in this range and hope they produce ones for all the vehicles

    Yep, we've all run into trouble kits like this Lou, so we understand. Like that you are willing to show that not all kits are a "tiptoe through the tulips" (just dated myself didn't?).
    Border Models are usually military vehicle and aircraft based kits and pretty good ones. They don't come with alot of motors or lights in them. The 1/35 Akagi deck kit comes with a light but it looks kind of "off" when looking at the instructions (haven't built it yet). Think maybe they need to work out their electronic engineering bugs. Otherwise their kits are buetifull. This is their first foreway into Sci-Fi kits that I know of anyway, so maybe they rushed it into production. There's also a butt ugly tank in this series.

  • @austinmorris981
    @austinmorris981 4 дня назад

    It looks like some sort of "Steampunk" fantasy aircraft. Steampunk is a fantasy sub-genre where you have adventures in an alternate world where the Victorian/Edwardian era had more advanced technology than what we see in "real" history. An example would be the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" series. A real lighter than air ship has to have an immense gas-bag to contain the hydrogen or helium lifting element, & the payload is relatively small. A steampunk airship is just like a ship-at-sea, only it flies, and it can carry heavy guns in gun turrets. "Kirov" would refer to Sergei Kirov, who was the Communist Party leader of Leningrad who was assassinated back in the mid-1930's.

    cont. A successor to "Steampunk" would be "Dieselpunk", which is the same as steampunk, only it is set in the 1920's or '30's. Imagine Prohibition era gangsters using interplanetary spaceships to smuggle bootleg hootch into the USA in violation of the Volstead Act! The Skylark of Space, by E.E. "Doc" Smith, Ph.D. (1928) might be the classic example of dieselpunk science fiction. You have to really, really, suspend your disbelief in order to enjoy this stuff, but I do!
