I did it with my 2015 model S AP1 and LOVE IT! Now I needn't worry about the MCU1 dying on me. I had 2 MCU1 units die. Instead of replacing the MCU1 on the second time it died, I had it upgraded to MCU2...love the added speed and the security of it not dying again. Love the added software bits too! :)
@@bradgraham9207 no, the mobile eye AP1 is not improved or such by the MCU2 upgrade. All other aspects of the software, such as summon, entertainment, and car usage like maps and UX are so much more superior. AP1 has its own computer so isn't upgraded or upgradable.
I would not assume MCU2 will not die. It may be much more resistant to it than MCU1, but remember there are more features being added all the time and more and more is being asked of it. Things like dashcam and sentry mode are the primary culprits, and they're already working on adding more functionality (and stress) to those. I'm going back to my standalone dash cam to try to limit the damage.
The chip will fail again unless the 8GB was upgraded to 64GB then it’s a whole lot less likely. But yes, I agree, replacing is sometimes a lot easier short term and definitely cheaper on the pocket!
The 8GB chip tesla will replace as a recall, which I did on my 2017 model s. then i did MCU2 and CCS upgrade, they should have offered me the MCU2 at a cheaper price rather than the real. With MCU2 they also change the display behind the wheel and FSD chip. You can pay for the radio upgrade when you have MCU2
The use of "foreign" sim card makes sense. That way the car is "always roaming" and so will switch from network to network according to signal strength. If it was linked to a UK network the car would not get as good coverage. I suppose the question is, do Spanish Teslas have a sim from a different country? Same with Dutch Teslas. Also, if travelling abroad, is the signal affected by being tied to a network?
Since this was made the data is now back a Dutch supplier so RUclips is now full of Dutch adverts not Spanish ones. I still can't watch BBC iPlayer mind you.

I’m guessing the priority will be giga-moulded front and rear subframe and a new battery tray for the 4680 cells, plus an interior refresh and an exterior tweak. A complete refresh in other words.
I really have doubts the new batteries would fit in the S or X even the 21700 cells and I don't think Tesla will want to spend the money when they have so many more vehicles to make, even a model 2!
Mark Reed they’re in the 520 mile range, 1100 bhp Model S Plaid, so the development is underway already. That’s my guess. Start with the most expensive and oldest first then filter down through the range. That way they can ramp up production.

Greetings from Hong Kong where every other car on the road is a Tesla MS - X or 3 James! Still Loving my 2014 85 I’m contemplating upgrading my MCU 1 as it’s very slow with tunein radio. This happened after the last navigation software upgrade! We can’t use browser or RUclips , games etc or any self driving or even smart summon (zero driver assists) allowed by the traffic dept except for cruise control...which makes my M3P rather redundant other than the poke.
I could imagine the next-gen S & X come out when the 4680 batteries are ready. I bet the new batteries will require a all-new platform and probably software too. So why not release the next-gen with a revamped interior as well?
From what I've heard that like may not register. need to watch a certain amount of the video apparently. Some sort of check that the like is real thing RUclips does.
@@leesmith9299 OK that makes sense. Thank you for the explanation. I've been getting paranoid about my likes disappearing. I'll click them after watching the video from now on.
MCU1 and MCU2 have different tuners. There is no "new tuner" for MCU1 cars converted to MCU2. Tesla just decided it was too much work to upgrade the tuner along with the MCU, which is very much in bad faith and very customer-unfriendly. If there are noises about a "new tuner", it's either an adapter to connect the old tuner to the new MCU (the most likely option) or it's just an upgrade to the newer tuner that already exists. As third-party audio makers and installers have been making aftermarket audio play nice with factory steering wheel controls, factory CD changers etc. for decades, there is simply no excuse for Tesla not making the adapter or tuner upgrade, whichever is the case, part of the swap from the beginning. Tesla in Australia are giving me the run-around on repairing my 2017 MCU1 AP2.5 which is exhibiting major signs of failure. It is creating dangerous situations when I need to change a setting, notably ride height and headlights, and simply cannot do it because the screen doesn't respond at all or is scrambled so I can't see how to make a selection. Clearly MCU1 is not even remotely up to the task of all the things it is currently expected to do, never mind Full Self Driving (which it is involved with, regardless of where the bulk of the processing is done). From what I've seen MCU2 is a far cry from being impressive as well and is only a very slight step up from MCU1. There is a dire need for a far more powerful MCU3 to be designed from the ground up to be retrofitted to every car that has Autopilot, and frankly I think it should be available for 1st generation Model Ses as well. MCU1 has always been a dog. It never could even satisfactorily open a single basic Web page, much less any of the other things currently asked of it. But I digress. The bottom line is that MCU2 and either a tuner adapter or an MCU2 tuner should be included with every AP3 upgrade, at no additional cost. It is not an option, it's mandatory, and if other people are having the same problems with MCU1 that I am, Tesla is going to be looking at a class action lawsuit sooner or later. This is a matter of safety, not convenience. If a battery gets ripped out or someone gets killed because a critical and urgent setting can't be made, that's on Tesla. As for the radio, are you aware that there are still drive-in theatres, and that the only audio these days is by tuning your car's radio to a low-power FM radio station? They've been doing this for at least 25 years, although in the early days it was optional. In these days of a pandemic, I see drive-ins making a serious comeback, and having to cobble together another radio solution is not acceptable. But that's only one example. There are lots of other reasons car radios are still very much relevant even in 2020. How about all the highway signs telling you to tune in to a certain frequency for information? Everything from weather updates and forecasts to park info or tourist drives to emergency directives. Radio is far from dead yet.
You need a summary, for those who don't have the time to read all of a comment. Not a criticism, but an observation. I'm prone to making long comments too. 😉 And I'm agreeing with your points.
