Tesla vehicles, provided they don't have all those problems from day one like yours had, should last 7-10 years easily. This means you can expect to drive it for quite a while after it is paid for. Also, since it is paid for at that point, any small repair costs are still cheaper than trading it in for another one.

What about mileage? Does it affect an ev as much as an ice car? Is it better to get a newer model with more mileage than an older model with less mileage?
Can I add a couple of used Tesla benefits? 1. AP1 has lane change control with your turn signals.. the base version of new AP does not.. unless you pay for FSD 2. a lot of the newer/used Teslas have FSD already... so for less than $50k you get an amazing car, with FSD with free connectivity etc. 3. Sunroof... I love my sunroof 4. some may not like this but, real leather also, tires are a real problem on the bigger wheels, stick with the 19s on a model S.. for range and for life of tires One more, when you buy used, the previous owner already worked out all of those new car kinks.. like the Y is having.. spending time at the service center for door handles or other issues. I love my used Tesla, it feels like new with the new MCU2
Great video Ben. Very detailed and inclusive of many details, including even some of the challenges you’ve had. But as you said you still recommend Tesla. The future is bright for them and the EV movement as a whole.

I really want a Tesla- but also kind of hard to justify the high cost with so many issues across all models. I feel like with any other car brand it would be unacceptable to have such poor fit and finish and unreliability. Not to mention any cost savings on gas are out the window if I have to replace the tires every 20,000 miles.

As others have mentioned, 1 yr/10k miles added now. There are ZERO used cars from Tesla with free supercharging. This has been stripped when they take them in. Also, no more pictures available on used cars plus $500 deposit and prepaid delivery which are non-refundable. In the past, I have seem some pretty shabby used Teslas when pictures were available. You have to just accept that now if you get one of those duds or you lose your deposit and delivery cost.
I wonder how much of the AC issue on the MX was because it was driven so little by the first owner? Several years ago I had a car that didn't get driven much for about a year. When I started driving it again regularly, the AC was my biggest issue. Could be the same thing on the MX, not specific to the car, just that the AC needs regular use or it starts to degrade and dies prematurely.
since there are a lot of factory issues and there are lots of mobile repairs, they should make the vans that go to houses and fix the cars electric too
Saying that the models are the same is very misleading. While model years are not distinct because tesla constantly updates their models even the same model "year" can be very different. so saying you're the same between two different model years it's completely incorrect. While the software is constantly updated over the air the hardware that does change quite rapidly can be very different. Version one autopilot is nowhere near the version that is available today, what are you smoking Ben.
this is also true for specific model years where they do a "refresh" and change various parts. eg: 2021 model 3/x/y gets an improved rain gutter grommet to prevent spilling into the car. also they get black trim instead of chrome, model S keeps the chrome. 2021 model 3 gets heat pump from model y, but you lose a portion of frunk space.
I’ve driven Tesla Model 3 for 5 years and finally thinking of upgrading to Tesla Model Y as I feel it is getting harder and harder to get in and out of my Tesla because of my back issues. Other than that I don’t have much requirement but the recent drop in process got me thinking again if I should get a new or used. After Tax credit new and old are quite close. It’s a no brainier for some but I’m thinking I’ll get FSD for cheap in older cars. I’m also not happy that dropped prices depreciated my cars value to less than half. I’ve used Enhanced pilot for my office commute and find FSD quite promising. And watched this video to validate my decision. I agree with the author advise to stick with basic autopilot and don’t pay for enhanced Autopilot for newer buyers. Enhanced autopilot is Not worth the 6k. But when it comes to FSD I’m curious. I like to know what problems I’ll face if I try to buy a 20k miles mileage 2020 Model Y as against 2021 or 2022. Is there any difference ?
Buying used through Tesla basically forces you into full self driving. They don't sell used cars without it for some time now. It's a cheaper way to get FSD than new if you want it, but if you don’t you can definitely find cheaper options.
In Toronto, Canada, I've noticed on the Tesla website that they seem to want almost as much as the new ones for a used model 3. Don't understand why someone would buy the used one unless they just have to have it right away. We also seem to get hammered on the price. It's a lot more than just the exchange rate difference.
No mention of charge time? I'm reading older Teslas have Level 1 charging (110v - days?) or Level 2 (10 hours?) ...only new Teslas have Level 3 charging...(30-60 min) ?
One add on is any vehicle made prior to 2018 will have MCU1 which does not have features such as dash cam viewer and the ability to stream Netflix Hulu Etc also it won’t be able to record on the rear camera. Also if you have HW 2.0 you won’t be able to record anything at all, you would have to get a HW3 retrofit
Found the cost of a pre-owned Tesla was so similar to a new one it just made since to buy new. Just bought a new 2021 Model 3. Came blacked out, a 128gb Flash drive for sentry mode and a powered trunk hatch.
I don't feel like I learned anything about how to buy a used Tesla. I just learned about features. How do I tell if the car is gonna have issues? How do I tell if it is banned from supercharging? How do I listen or look for common problems?
in Sweden, however, the free charge will apparently not be transferred to the person who buys a used Tesla. it will only apply to the first owner of the car, as long as he owns the car
Ben, you mentioned if you buy a used car from Tesla, that you would get a 2 year additional warranty for bumper 2 bumper? Unless I'm reading it wrong on the Tesla site, you only get one additional year from when the original bumper 2 bumper warranty would have expired.
I want a Tesla but I’m debating if I should get one or not because there expensive 38k used is like ehhh good but still something I need to research a lot about before getting it I wish there was like a 25k option
Ben have you ever bought a car? Traditional auto makers do not change the vehicles on a yearly basis. It is usually around 5 years. They may make minor changes from year to year and Tesla does this as well. But buying a used Tesla from Tesla is about the worst experience anyone can have buying a used car. Because it can take months to get a car that you have paid for and are paying insurance for, but you have no car. At least when I walk into a traditional dealer I can drive away in a few hours with a vehicle. Tesla thinks that is crazy and makes you wait months to get the vehicle from the next state. Wow Tesla’s warranty is awful. 4 years 50,000 miles bumper to bumper.
Year of car matters. They update their hardware like software revisions all under the same name. E.g. the heat pumps, change to cell chemistry, window material etc...
Teslas as other brands are differentiate by year of manufacturing, this doesn't mean they change. This year of manufacturing is what the depreciation is based on. Every year under the same model they just change the options
This is videos we need awesome review and I was thinking getting my 1st tesla with CarMax and this video going to help me decide on what to look for. Thanks Ben!
My tip for buying a tesla is to not love the world or the things of this world. Happy Easter! My son just bought a tesla and so I felt the need to make a vid to help.
In Tesla age matters a lot because believe it or not they do age. They chip, paint can rust, headlights get foggy etc… it basically does show age… screen starts malfunction plus warranty is very important since its extremely costly to fix any of the problems out of pocket.
Do you think the updated 2021 Model 3 is worth buying compared to 2020 with the slightly upgraded features? Heat pump / windows / satin black finishes.
@@augere9620 Well the only the extra cost is the $1200 doc fee but you don’t get the $2000 credit if you buy used so it would be cheaper. (Since u still pay tax on used cars)
if you buy from Tesla, they turn on FSD when you pick up a pre-owned SR+. That's "10K" of value, it's obviously not worth 10k but it's good to be future proof.
@@KingAlexGaming no they do not. It’s included when they resale used Teslas. Check Teslas preowned inventory, you’ll see that they all have it enabled. I’ve verified by calling the delivery center, they are putting it on to move preowned inventory
Thank you for the very informative video because I really want to purchase a used Tesla. I was very worried about what to do and how to do it. Thanks again!!
I can second your experience and knowledge (coming from 3yr old Model 3 owner). All solid points esp “cruise control+”… well explained. I think for new EV owners that range loss/degradation/calibration should be the big think to familiarize (since it gives real range!! given range is no 1 factor for me as well). Ballpark, you do lose about 30-40 (more like 35%) in practical use given the 10% low end of charge and 80/85% high end of typical charge and some degradation/range calibration issues. Would you recommend any sites (aside from Tesla which seems actually quite nice but it’s mostly new pre owned vs genuine pre owned by price)? Carvana seems very very high for some reason
What about selling a Tesla to a traditional car dealership after owning it for say 2 years? I see how easy it is to buy and trade through Tesla, but nothing really about trading one to say Ford for a car.
Hi Ben! I live in Sweden and our used Tesla prices on the Tesla web-page are ridiculous. We have 60.000kr (7100 dollars) tax credit on new cars after 6 months of ownership which makes a new Tesla model 3 worth 640.000kr (76000 dollars) after incentives. A used one, 1-2 years old with same specs is PLUS FSD is 700.000. FSD alone is worth 77.000 when ordering. So for 17.000kr (2000 dollars) I get the latest mode with all the new goodies. I’ll never buy a used model 3 in Sweden. Just thought I’d tell u how it goes here! :)
I just read an article saying that the Tesla website is misleading in terms of the car coming with FSD, that FSD could follow the seller instead of remaining on the vehicle. Has anyone heard the same? Also that they do nit certify their used cars anymore🙄
But what about other modern things like being able to play music in flac format from usb memory. or new Bluetooth codec. now I do not know if Tesla has support for LDAC or aptixHD. then it can be a matter of 3G vs 4G mobile networks

Do I love the Tesla - A resounding Hell Yes 🤙🏼 * My recommendation* New or used - Buy through Tesla 👍🏼 (Great video Ben 🍺🍺
1 - don’t pay more for that used Tesla than they are new…you think that would be straight forward but the last 2 years have shown otherwise 2 - check for accidents…they seem to get in a lot of them even with low mileage 3 - has the previous owner done any maintenance? Since it’s a Tesla, likely not, so you may want think about getting new…and please do the proper maintenance if you do buy new 4 - are the tires no name garbage? Walk away… 5 - take stock of what the battery capacity, range, and features that are included are prior to doing the ownership change (take photos etc) and have them written in the bill of sale so that if Tesla removes them suddenly you have proof to get them back through social media shaming or court action
When they show a new model of reimagined car from twenty years ago they probably are going to see older models on a streets, but not everywhere it's true as far car history goes. Mostly this is found as government public documents or responses to emails as official publicity response. If you own one, only option here is to ship it to fix it which probably will take months.

2. a lot of the newer/used Teslas have FSD already... so for less than $50k you get an amazing car, with FSD with free connectivity etc.
3. Sunroof... I love my sunroof
4. some may not like this but, real leather
also, tires are a real problem on the bigger wheels, stick with the 19s on a model S.. for range and for life of tires
One more, when you buy used, the previous owner already worked out all of those new car kinks.. like the Y is having.. spending time at the service center for door handles or other issues.
I love my used Tesla, it feels like new with the new MCU2
agree
Great video Ben. Very detailed and inclusive of many details, including even some of the challenges you’ve had. But as you said you still recommend Tesla. The future is bright for them and the EV movement as a whole.
Thanks for the info just tying to decide between a used model y or x one option i must have is the FSD.
pro tip...if yall interested in buying a used car, like a tesla, check out Turo, rent it for a day for less than $100 in most places and see how you like it! much better than a 10 minutes test drive at a dealership. plus it hard to find tesla dealerships
There is a video on the channel that discusses TCO and compares it to several other comparable ICE models and even some not so comparable.
I took a Tesla for a test drive with FSD and I was blown away by the technology it is 100% full self-driving I couldn't believe it
Ended up with 4000 mile With FSD 2021 model 3 pearl white 2021 clean history with black wheels , 53,000$ but since illinois rapes register and tax 57k out the door first car super excited
I get a lot of cheap used cars that have been sitting for years and the O rings on a/c are usually the issue for that system.
7:53 do can do self park on 2014+ cars, not 2017 and up
Very happy with my used model S. It’s a 2016 90d that costs 110k new and got it for $40k. Can’t believe the previous owner would get rid of it.
But a 2016 doesn't have all the new features that the new ones have.
@@Superman-xr1oh has enough. I got one too
since there are a lot of factory issues and there are lots of mobile repairs, they should make the vans that go to houses and fix the cars electric too
Saying that the models are the same is very misleading.
7:27 these things did Not require 2.5 -they can do them this 2.0
Wow! This was so helpful. Great Video 👍🏽
What year of used Model 3 should I buy if I want to avoid problems?
Buying used through Tesla basically forces you into full self driving. They don't sell used cars without it for some time now. It's a cheaper way to get FSD than new if you want it, but if you don’t you can definitely find cheaper options.
August 2020 model s and later are the only models with the external speaker update
In Toronto, Canada, I've noticed on the Tesla website that they seem to want almost as much as the new ones for a used model 3. Don't understand why someone would buy the used one unless they just have to have it right away. We also seem to get hammered on the price. It's a lot more than just the exchange rate difference.
Same in the UK, in fact some cost more than new....crazy...!
@@couplandsj So you'd really have to be impatient, not to buy a new one.
Are you comparing a car with full self driving and one without it? That is a $10k add on and it doesn't depreciate.
@@ymcpa73 No, I understand that.
No mention of charge time? I'm reading older Teslas have Level 1 charging (110v - days?) or Level 2 (10 hours?) ...only new Teslas have Level 3 charging...(30-60 min) ?
They no longer offer free supercharging on used Tesla’s they resell on their website.
fk
The tire aspect he is talking about only applies to an untrained foot. I have 72k on my 2018 M3 and on my second set.
wym exactly?
I have a 2018 M3 midrange rwd. I was surprised to have to replace the rear tires at about 10k miles.
I'm not old enough to own a Tesla or to drive a car, but that is good advice
I don't feel like I learned anything about how to buy a used Tesla. I just learned about features. How do I tell if the car is gonna have issues? How do I tell if it is banned from supercharging? How do I listen or look for common problems?
Thx for the video. Please clarify if buying a higher mileage Telsa is risky? if so how risky is that?
Are there options to purchase a warranty from Tesla for a car without one or once it's expired?
Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste and Thank You for All your efforts to support this Great Cause 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ 🌷 ☮️ ❤️
in Sweden, however, the free charge will apparently not be transferred to the person who buys a used Tesla. it will only apply to the first owner of the car, as long as he owns the car
Ben, you mentioned if you buy a used car from Tesla, that you would get a 2 year additional warranty for bumper 2 bumper? Unless I'm reading it wrong on the Tesla site, you only get one additional year from when the original bumper 2 bumper warranty would have expired.
They changed it between when I recorded this and now
Is a 2022 model 3 standard range for $26,000, 46,000 miles out the door a good deal?
If I buy a Tesla from a non-Tesla dealer, can I bring that car to a Tesla service center for them to look over before I buy?
How are people acquiring the charge ports for your home when buying used outside of Tesla?
You just need a NEMA 14-50 outlet, they will give you the charger/adapter. Also there are lots of options on the Tesla shop
@@BenSullinsOfficial awesome thank you!
I want a Tesla but I’m debating if I should get one or not because there expensive 38k used is like ehhh good but still something I need to research a lot about before getting it I wish there was like a 25k option
Ben, is there a transfer of the basic warranty when you buy a used Tesla?
Hi Ben, whats you opinion about leasing a used Tesla? I seems you are buying them only in cash why not leasing or fiancing?
Yes.
A used model 3 standard range is the same price as a new one though :( And it has been for almost 2 years...
@@DarwinChaug But they tack on ~10k to the price?
@@KingAlexGaming no they do not. It’s included when they resale used Teslas. Check Teslas preowned inventory, you’ll see that they all have it enabled. I’ve verified by calling the delivery center, they are putting it on to move preowned inventory
Thank you for the very informative video because I really want to purchase a used Tesla. I was very worried about what to do and how to do it. Thanks again!!
very nice tip! I am buying a used one soon!
I understand what your saying about buying used but they hold there value so well u might as well spend the few extra thousands to get new
outstanding Ben...thanks!
Just bought a used 2019 Used Tesla.. Love it....
You able to get an extended warranty through tesla or you go private seller?
Just found out the hard way that the 2 year Used Car Warranty just got bumped down to a 1 year. 😕
I read all used models come with FSD is that true?
dammit!
@@jFranco1994 no. They come with the capability of buying the FSD for an additional cost of 10K, even if you have enhanced or standard autopilot.
Bought my 2018 M3 standard range+ at a Florida mega dealership - I would not recommend doing this for the unanticipated..
Essentially, the salesman knew almost next to nothing (as much as me) about the car.
In fact they desperately tried to sell me a “key replacement “ add on?.. $699 💩
Did I love the mega dealership experience-Absolutely not!
Do I love the Tesla - A resounding Hell Yes 🤙🏼
* My recommendation*
New or used - Buy through Tesla 👍🏼
(Great video Ben 🍺🍺
1 - don’t pay more for that used Tesla than they are new…you think that would be straight forward but the last 2 years have shown otherwise
2 - check for accidents…they seem to get in a lot of them even with low mileage
3 - has the previous owner done any maintenance? Since it’s a Tesla, likely not, so you may want think about getting new…and please do the proper maintenance if you do buy new
4 - are the tires no name garbage? Walk away…
5 - take stock of what the battery capacity, range, and features that are included are prior to doing the ownership change (take photos etc) and have them written in the bill of sale so that if Tesla removes them suddenly you have proof to get them back through social media shaming or court action
I believe Tesla made a change that free supercharging does not get passed to the new owners.
Sure just saved me money, thanks!
Ben in the Tesla world how important are the miles driven on the used car?
If you live in a cold climate plan on buying snow tires too.
When they show a new model of reimagined car from twenty years ago they probably are going to see older models on a streets, but not everywhere it's true as far car history goes. Mostly this is found as government public documents or responses to emails as official publicity response. If you own one, only option here is to ship it to fix it which probably will take months.
Ben. Thanks so much. Should I get FSD or not?
You missed an opportunity to bring up salvaged title Tesla’s. Here in Utah there are more salvaged titles for sale than for sale by owner. Some people that bought them are finding out now that supercharging has been disabled.
This is June info.. Tesla no longer offers a lot with their used cars.
1 year warranty, no free charging or connectivity for life.
Luckily I bought my 2016 X in June when they still offered the 4 year warranty and free everything.
It is sad they no longer back up their own cars but glad I pulled the trigger... She's a unicorn and is fantastic.
i just bought a used 2018 tesla model 3 standard in phoenix for 46k sale price from a local dealer(W/ a warranty on all electrical) and the car looks and feels mint condition. i’m not too familiar with all the features yet, my goal was just to replace my monthly gas cost with an investment ahah maybe it’s time for an updated version of this video with the current market?? i also live in SD and all EVs are marked up $15k+ lol
This video is so true!
We recently bought a 2015 Elon Musk Excutive upgrade special edition Titanium Metallic ultra rare color P85D+ with AP 1.0. And it somehow have autopilot with NAV on highway.
Got lucky with the car!
As someone accelerating their buying decision. Thanks for this information.
